Alamir is the first book in the Blood of Kaos Series by Nesa Miller. This is a bit of a darkish fantasy- with plenty of action, adventure, danger, paranormal elements, drama, twists, mystery, romance, wonderful world building, and intriguing characters. As I have said before, Ms. Miller really knows how to weave an engrossing story- and has also created a really impressive, original, and entirely believable world in which to set her story. So descriptive and vividly detailed, it was really easy to ‘picture’ everything as the story was brought to life before my eyes. These characters are all very interesting, fully developed individuals with their own personalities, quirks, and flaws. There is a fairly large cast of characters, but each plays their part wonderfully well, and adds interest to the overall storyline. So, if you love a great fantasy, with intriguing characters, and a wonderfully exciting plot that will keep you engrossed the whole way through- then this is definitely the book for you. A superb start for the series.

Old and New: The Enchanted Wedding Dress Book One is the first book in The Maclellan Sisters Trilogy by Lucinda Race. This is an original, heart-warming story- with romance, sisterhood, family bonds, family heirlooms, and a little bit of enchantment. I really enjoyed this story and am looking forward to reading the other two books in this sweet trilogy. Here we meet the MacLellan sister- Jamie, Kenzie, and Grace who receive a package after the death of their beloved Gran. Inside the box is her antique wedding dress, the family plaid, a brooch, and a letter. They discover a family legend surrounding the dress- that whoever wears it will be able to see their future. It is their Gran’s wish that they try the dress on. But being fiercely independent and staunchly single- will they respect their grandmother’s desire- or will they shrug it off as silly nonsense? This is Jamie’s story- she is the oldest sister and is the most sceptical of the three, but intrigue wins out in the end- and so the story takes off. There was definitely a ‘Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants’ vibe to this story, but with its own unique identity. The story has quite a fast pace, and did seem a little rushed at times. But overall, it was a lovely story. Looking forward to seeing what happens in Book Two.

Alligators in the Trees is such a wonderful story from the ever-talented Cynthia Hamilton. I have read many of Ms. Hamilton’s books now and she never ceases to amaze me by how versatile a writer she is. From mysteries, to romance, powerful non-fiction, and even humorous chick-lit- she masters them all. Ms. Hamilton’s clever and creative stories never fail to cast their spell on me, easily pulling me in and keeping me engrossed from beginning till end. I really didn’t know what to expect going into this book- the title was intriguing but really didn’t give too much away. Even after reading the blurb, I still wasn’t sure that I would be blown away by the story. Of course, I knew it would be a ‘good’ read- because Ms. Hamilton wrote it, but I still had my reservations. But boy-oh-boy did she show me- I should never have doubted her for even a second. This was brilliant, the story captured me right from the get-go, and I couldn’t believe how easily I became invested in the story and the wonderfully quirky, interesting, and strangely endearing characters. This is what I would class as a character study story- a character driven plot woven around the lives of three mismatched, struggling characters who all happen to end up at the same grungy diner, for different reasons. Little do they realise that ending up at the grimy dive that is ‘Frank’s Diner’ will impact them far more than they ever imagined. Prolific poetry writer Priscilla Vanderpool took on a job waitressing at Franks as a way of avoiding challenging herself, taking risks, or expecting too much from her life. Her fears have held her back for such a long time. Waitressing is merely a means-to-an-end for her- as she basically stumbled into the job and stayed because she didn’t have anywhere else to be. Philip Glessner had a thriving architectural firm and a stellar reputation, until one of his buildings collapsed thus throwing his well-ordered world into chaos- drowning him in a bottomless pit of debt and a mountain of legal woes. It was pure chance that led him to the diner, looking for a place to hide out from pushy reporters. That was months ago, but he returns daily, not for the food- but because he’s developed a crush on Priscilla. So, while his world falls apart, his business fails, and his wife tries to squeeze him dry- Phillip finds some solace in Priscilla’s steady and calm demeanour. Then we meet Tobias Jordan, the reclusive, aging, world-weary, former Rockstar who’s desperately trying to recapture his mojo and recreate his former success. Hiding out from the paparazzi, he ducks into the diner to find a quiet moment to focus his thought and maybe write some new lyrics. But what he never expected was to find a muse there, in the form of Priscilla, who unknowingly ignites his creativity and inspires new songs. What Ms. Hamilton has managed to create is a beautifully balanced story- with a focus on character development, but not at the expense of the intriguing story that she engineers so beautifully. This story may seem simple, but it is deceptively complex- with many layers, a high degree of detail, a few surprises to keep things unpredictable, and all so vividly descriptive- including the song lyrics that pepper the story and add extra interest. All the elements are cleverly choreographed into quite an impactful read, which I certainly didn’t wasn’t anticipate- making this all the more memorable. A true unexpected pleasure, and another glistening gem to add to Ms. Hamilton’s crown.

Forest Park is the second book in The Logan McKenna Series by Valerie Davisson. Even though this is only the second book in the series, our leading lady, Logan has been through quite a lot. This book sees her investigating another murder, this time with links to the Vietnam War. Logan will need to sort through all the secrets, half truths, drama, and history- to get to the bottom of it all. We also get a front row seat to her own life as she embraces her own new beginnings. This is my favourite of the series so far.

The Lightning Horse is the first book in the Empire at Twilight seriesby N.L Holmes. This is my second book from Ms. Holmes, and the one thing I love about her books is the historical detail she manages to infuse into her stories. As with the other book of Ms. Holmes that I have read, the authors passion for history is evident in her writing. This passion certainly added to my enjoyment of the story. I love ancient history- and Ms. Holmes seems to know this subject incredibly well- but I imagine a lot of meticulous research, blood, sweat, and tears also went into the creation of this book. The story is a fascinating blend of fiction and historical fact woven into quite an intriguing piece of work. This time, the story is set in the Hittite period, which the author does a great job of recreating and bringing to life. The story is a slow building cozy mystery, with a little drama for added interest. So, if you love ancient history, original stories with interesting characters and settings, cozies, and crime fiction- then you will probably want to grab a copy of this book. Happy Reading!

House of Valdis Origins: Xenobia (House of Valdis #0)is the prequel to the House of Valdis series by Naomi Valkyrie. This book is a super quick and easy read. But don’t be fooled. There is quite a lot packed into a small package- in a great way. I really enjoyed The Rise of House Valdis (Book #1) and after getting to the end of that story I really needed to know so much more about the characters and backstory- I was so curious and itching for more details, which this book does a great job of providing- filling in much of what I needed to know. The story may have taken me less than 20 minutes to read but manages to span more than 12 months- with the intensity, suspense, and emotional depth of a much longer novel. It never felt rushed or cut short in any way. But having said that, I am completely fascinated by the “world” and characters Ms. Valkyrie has created- and I am greedy- so I would love to have read a longer version of this story ‘cos that’s how us needy and greedy readers roll lol. 😊 From Xen’s blue skin and sharp fangs, to her resilience, strength, and determination- she is completely fascinating. Her plight in this book was quite heart-wrenching and helped me understand her so much better. Finding out where she came from, and what she went through made for a riveting read, whilst helping to put everything from Book One in greater perspective. I am completely captivated and sooo hooked on this series now, and I truly cannot wait to get my hands on the next book! Fantastic!
Better Than Goodbye is the first book in the Venture series, and my first read by Kinney Scott. It is a sweet and spicy second chance romance with plenty of angst, emotion, chemistry, drama, and sizzle. The story and characters are well really well developed, with plenty of depth, as well as being relatable and interesting. I enjoyed the authors warm, sexy, and inviting style- it was so easy to read and immerse myself in. It was somewhat predictable, but in a charming way- and the fact that it was a little predictable didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the story. Amanda left her hometown, and the love of her life, to follow her dreams to California, but her heart and soul are still back in Oregon. So, when the opportunity arises to spend a month back in her hometown again, she grabs hold with both hands, determined to find a way to resolve her greatest regret. One small problem, the person she hopes to reconnect with hates her……. things are about to get interesting. A great read. Looking forward to exploring more of Kinney Scott’s work.

With the launch in mind, he’s going to need the right kind of branding. Hiring an effective marketing consultant should ensure success- right? Deception is my first read by Victoria Saccenti. Never having read any of her work before, I really didn’t know what to expect going into this book. I discovered that the author has a very descriptive and ‘visual’ style to her writing- with an attention to detail that really brought his story to life. I loved that part of the book. I really liked the premise, offering something a little different from other books in the same genre. I was really into this story- until the dialogue and interactions between characters. Something about it really put me off a bit. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it seemed a little forced and/or somewhat disingenuous. There were cheesy moments, and some of the ‘sex-scenes’ were a little awkwardly worded. This did seem to improve as the story progressed and I did enjoy the second half more than the first. This book should have ticked all the boxes for me- but fell a little short. Maybe it was just me, as I have read a few of the other reviews for it and they all seem to have no problems with it- so I think I will revisit this book again in the future and see if I still feel the same way or whether I was just having an off reading day. This book is a game of seduction, with revenge being the end game. But what happens when this spider web of intrigue and deception begins to unravel? What happens when feelings become involved? And what happens when the truth is revealed? You really need to read the story if you want to find out. I really wanted to love this book so much more than I did. But I just couldn’t connect with it the way I’d hoped. Maybe next time.

A Duke Never Forgets is the third book in The Duke Hunters Club by Bianca Blythe. It is a historical romance, with a bit of an enemies-to-lovers element, funny banter + quips, humour, emotion, drama, secrets+ lies, and is a ‘clean’ romance.
Sebastian, the Duke of Sandridge, and Genevieve have had some unfortunate history between them which has left Sebastian, especially, holding quite a grudge. So imagine how irate he becomes when he learns that his nemesis (Genevieve) and her family are the tenants in his holiday cottage in Cornwall. He wants them gone- ASAP. Genevieve and her family have been through a lot and being evicted from their home isn’t something she’s going to stand by and watch happen. But even so, when the Duke has an unfortunate event, it’s Genevieve who comes to his aid. Sebastian wakes with some amnesia- and things take an interesting turn when her mother announce that Sebastian and Genevieve are married. So, what happens if and when the Duke gets his memories back? This reminded me a lot of a historical version of the movie “Overboard”- but with its own unique identity. The story was a little predictable, and the ending did seem to be a little rushed- but the story was enjoyable non-the-less. Looking forward to more from Ms. Blythe.

Love Song (A Friends-to-Lovers Rock and Roll Romantic Suspense) by K.G Fletcher is another wonderfully woven and entirely captivating story. I say this repeatedly, but Ms. Fletcher never fails to deliver a story that captures my heart and mind, every single time. I love her warm, sexy, almost lyrical writing style- it makes reading her books such a pleasure. The way she wove quite an intense and suspenseful story in and around a sweet romance was really clever- and definitely gave this book an extra zing. As expected, the story is sexy and romantic, with intense moments, edge of your seat suspense, tension, sparks, emotion, and drama- and of course let’s not forget about the music. Well worth the read!

Shooting Star is the first book in the Back Door Recordsby Xana Jordan. It is a Rockstar romance with music, drama, chemistry, connection, love, romance, and plenty of emotion. This may have been my first Xana Jordan book, but it definitely won’t be my last. Music agent Aiden doesn’t realise that by holding auditions for an opening act for his band that he is about to have his world rocked, in more ways than one. Aria voice is mesmerising and she’s exactly what he is looking for- on many levels. With such an intense chemistry between them, there’s no denying their connection. I don’t want to give too much away and spoil the story for you. But, this book really has everything you could want in a great Rockstar romance- all the emotion, banter, romance, wonderful characters, and dramatic developments- all help to bring this story come alive. The way this story ended left me wanting more- in a good way- so now I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book. Bring on Book #2!!!

Blue Magnolia is the second book in the Red Farlow Mysteries series, but my first read by W.F Ranew. It is an interesting crime investigation story full of mystery, drama, intrigue, danger, and lots more that kept me turning the pages to discover what was happening. I enjoyed this book and look forward to exploring W.F Ranew’s other books in this series. Hank Tillman (“Cowboy”) is a country music singer trying to make it big. He seems to attract trouble, stumbling from one error in judgement to another mishap. When one of his songs becomes a hit- it attracts some unwanted attention in the form an extremist group who are determined to ‘persuade’ him to perform at their rally. Declining the radical organization places Hank in a precarious situation. And so enters Private Investigator Red Farlow, who is hired to help protect him. But, things heat up and the trouble escalates, with danger becoming an ever-present shadow. Red will need to dig deep and utilize all his skills in order to get to the bottom of things before it’s too late. This was a detailed and descriptive story with an original premise and an intriguing puzzle that had my mind pondering the outcome. There was a lot happening and a lot of ‘parts’ in play, which gave the story a bit of a jerky/choppy feel. I am interested to see how the series develops in the next book/s.
Secure Desire is the first book in the Chase Security seriesby R.L Dunn, and is a really great action-packed romantic suspense- with mystery, murder, intrigue, violence, brutality, spills and thrills, hidden agendas, sinister plots, clandestine ops, covert organizations, private security, family, friendship, Politics, loss, betrayal, chemistry….. and soooo much more. Ian Chase is an ex-Navy SEAL turned successful business man, now heading up the Chase Group, a billion dollar global empire in the venture capital and private security sector. He has never forgotten a brief encounter with a beautiful, but engaged, art historian he met six years earlier. So, imagine his surprise when he unexpectedly encounters her again- only now she’s no longer engaged or married, and works for the FBI. He knows there is more to the story, and to her, than she’s letting on. Secrets surround her. And he’s determined to get to the bottom of it all. Cassiopeia Ellis remembers meeting Ian, and he’d made quite the impression on her. But she remembers very little else from that night. She suffers from amnesia and is haunted by nightmares from a very traumatic experience. Running into Ian again after all these years, both thrills and terrifies her. She still feels their electric chemistry and magnetic pull- but she is deathly afraid that he’ll discover her secret and then won’t want anything to do with her. Much better to push him away, than to suffer the pain and embarrassment of rejection. But Ian has arrived at a point where he is able to really help Cassie- as someone seems to want her dead. Can Ian protect her and keep her safe? Who has targeted Cassie, and why? What happened to her six years ago, and what has that got to do with the present threat? All the answers to these questions, and more, can be discovered between the covers of this suspenseful read! I really enjoyed this book. I was intrigued right from the beginning, totally engrossed the whole way through. There were some shocking, emotional, and violent moments that had me anxiously reading, on the edge of my seat to discover if things would turn out ok. There was a lot going on, and so much to keep track of, too. R.L Dunn has written a complex, multi-layered story full of clever interconnected details which gives it a real unpredictability- she kept me guessing the whole way through. I had so many scenarios running through my head, trying to piece everything together and work out what was going on. I though that aspect of the writing, and story, was really well done. I loved Ian and Cassie, they were so easy to like and invest in. I really felt for Cassie and what she’d been through, and what she was going through!!! OMG- R.L Dunn really put her through the wringer. And then there’s Ian- his protective Alpha hotness was swoon-worthy. I also love Kieran, and Monique, Lil and Declan, Luke and Rachel…. And Hunter, such a sexy man- I’d sure like to know more about him! The story was meticulously researched, or the author has experience in the field- with all the medical terminology, equipment, and medications that were used in the story, as well as the security lingo and weaponry etc. The story was detailed and vividly descriptive. The only issue I had, was that there are a LOT of characters in the story- I counted over 130 NAMED characters- which was a lot to keep track of! I didn’t think they all required naming, especially passers-by on the street/hallway, or the nurse at her station etc- especially since many don’t any play a further part in the story. It just was a lot to take in- I like to remember names and places during a story, especially when I’m trying to piece everything together, like in this book- so I found the ‘extra names’ a little ‘messy’ to the overall tight plot-lines. This didn’t detract too much from the storyline, but it was a little distracting, and at times, confusing. I am really looking forward to reading more of R.L Dunn’s work.

Trey: European Redemption is the seventh book in the Russian Mob Chronicles by Shandi Boyes. This book is definitely one of Shandi Boyes’ more disturbing stories. The story both unsettled and intrigued me at the same time. There were parts that made me incredibly uncomfortable with what was playing out and times I really wanted to close the book and walk away. I cannot honestly say that it is my favourite story of hers- but it definitely stirred quite a lot of reactions from me- tossing my emotions around like they were nothing but a rag doll. So, I do have to give her props for that. This book has played on my mind a lot since I finished reading it, and has had me mulling over how I was going to review it- let alone rate it. But I think a story that can evoke so much from the reader, really does deserve some recognition. I love dark and disturbing stories- normally the darker the better. I like to have my mind twisted and my emotions toyed with. This story isn’t as dark as some that I have read and enjoyed- but there is something about it that left me uncomfortable and a little distressed. I took about eight pages of notes while reading this book- which is double what I normally do. There are so many triggers in this book- so be warned! This is NOT a light and fluffy read. If you are looking for hearts and flowers, unicorns and rainbows- then this is definitely NOT the book for you. This story is NOT for the faint of heart. It is NOT a romance in the true sense of the word. So, let me make it clear- this is a Russian Mob/Mafia romance- with graphic violence, drug use/abuse/addiction, sex trafficking/exploitation/rape, violence towards women, swearing, brutality, torture, guns, blood, gore, and more. Trey is a dangerous unhinged Alpha Male I would class as an anti-hero, and I really wasn’t sure I was going to like him in the beginning with all his hard partying, manwhore, deadly ways. And poor Kristina has been so brutalized, held captive for years in the sex trafficking industry, so used and abused- my heart broke (and ached) for her and what she had been through- but I also admired the strength it took to get through all that without completely losing her mind. They are both damaged and broken- but form an intense connection despite it all. Will they be able to lead each other out of the darkness? You will need to read the story if you want to find out. This is told from a duel/alternating POV- which really allows the reader to get a full perspective of what is going on and what is going through the characters minds as the story plays out. I appreciated getting such a rounded perspective of the story. There are a few flashbacks which help to build the backstory, as well as adding to the character depth and development. There are a few issues that I found with this book that I don’t normally find or have with Shandi Boyes books- editing issues, and storyline issues. Then there were sentences/paragraphs with double spaces between words, while the rest of the book had a single space between words. Happy to say that these issues didn’t detract from my overall reading experience. There is a nice surprise at the end of the book in the form of a sequel (novella) which is free to download (through the link supplied at the end)- which gives us more of Trey and Kristina’s story and answers some questions we may have initially been left with. I debated what rating to award this book given that it disturbed me so much and really did make me so uncomfortable- which is really hard to do given that I love dark reads- so I came to the conclusion that the book deserved the 5 stars just for that reason alone.

The Walls Between Us: A Borderland Love Story is primarily a story of love interwoven around the harsh, yet picturesque environment of the borderlands that divide the United States and Mexico. This is quite a multi-faceted and detailed story outlining all the divides between the borders. Full of heartache, danger, fear, politics, injustice, discrimination, faith, love, compassion, emotion, and hope. This story shines a light on the all too real situation that occurs daily. The struggle and hardships faced by people trying to cross the divide- is a small snapshot of a much larger issue. Encompassing social justice, human trafficking, history, politics, family, love, and much more. There is a lot going on in a small space, and at times it did get a little confusing- which had me re-reading more than a few paragraphs to try to make sense of it all. I kept feeling like I was missing something- that little something that could prove to be vital to the bigger picture, and thus, to my perspective of it all. But I never did discover what was missing. With flashback that help build the backstory, the story takes place on multiple timelines and locations- but ultimately all the layers, threads, and characters do connect. The story is definitely thought provoking and emotive- and left me wondering for quite a while after I had finished. Based on a true story.

The Abduction of Sarah Tarbell: As Her Soul Remembers by Stuart Ledwith is an interesting historical chronicle focusing on the life of a puritan teenager abducted by the Mohawk Indians in the early 1700’s. We follow her emotive journey of strength and survival- learning much about her, and the time, as experienced by her. This is an original story, told in an interesting way. Sarah had a difficult life- full of fear, danger, and the unfamiliar. But amongst it all is a story of strength and survival, of faith and hope, compassion and learning, and most of all- a story of love. This book has a bit of a documentary feel to it- but also woven with real emotion. It is a thought-provoking read that had me appreciating the strength it took to survive under those circumstances.

Flicker to Fire is the third book in the Crimson Sash series by Amanda Marin. It is an original futuristic, dystopian, YA fantasy- with sci-fi elements, action, adventure, drama, intrigue, friendship, romance, politics, violence, social justice messages, human rights issues, emotion, and lots more. This book follows on from the first two, with a bridging storyline and many recurring characters- so I really recommend reading the first two books before starting on this one, to get the best possible reading experience of this story. I have followed the series from the beginning and have been eagerly awaiting the release of this book to continue the adventure. So much has happened along the course of these three books- so I couldn’t help but get caught up in everything that transpired here and what the characters were going through. Amanda Marin certainly knows how to spin a riveting tale and held me enthralled the whole way through. I don’t want to reveal any of the plot, past or present- just in case you haven’t read any of the books yet, as I really don’t want to give anything away that may spoil the story for you- except to say that if you love dystopian, YA, or future fantasy- then you probably won’t want to miss out on reading this book/series. I wonder what Ms. Marin has planned for us next?

Drawn to Him is a sweet small town contemporary romance by Tammy Mannersly– and is my favourite of her books, so far. The story is quite captivating, with emotion, and some danger and drama thrown in which keep me avidly reading. The story is interesting and entertaining, it has a great pace, and flows really well. The characters are really well developed and so easy to like. I connected with them right away. Erica and Matt were so great together- just loved them.

She’d spent the last two years since her husband Jack died wrapping up and selling the computer business they’d built together. The process had been wrenching. After paying off business debts—Jack had been more charmer than money manager—there wasn’t a whole lot left. Truth be told, she needed the job.”
Shattered: a Logan McKenna Mystery Book 1 (The Logan McKenna Series) by Valerie Davisson is a murder mystery- with action, drama, crime investigation, art community elements, Native American characters and cultural references, and more. This is my first read by Valerie Davisson, so I really didn’t know what to expect going into the story- but as I love a good thrilling mystery, I was excited to jump in and get going. I really wanted to love this book so much more than I did. It should have been right in my wheelhouse and should have grabbed me right from the get-go. But it didn’t. I had trouble connecting with Logan and the other characters- which in turn made it difficult to settle in and invest in the outcome of the story. Parts of the story felt rushed- while other parts lagged, which really disrupted the flow of the story for me. At times I felt that the story got a little off track- making things a little confusing and I found myself re-reading parts to clarify where and what was happening. But, I have had a really busy and tiring week- so maybe it was just me- so I intend to revisit this book again in the near future, to see if I still feel the same way, or whether I was just having an ‘off’ day when reading it. As it is the first book in the series, I would be interested to read the next book, or books- to see if some of the issues I had with this story have been resolved in the other additions. I did find the crime/murder part quite interesting, as with the glassblowing/artistic element.

Her Blackened Soul is the first book in The Blackened Series by Isra Sravenheart. This is quite an original story, with a bit of a fairytale-esque feel to it. It stands apart from other ‘fairytale’ type stories in that it is all about the ‘villain’. It is a fantasy- a paranormal romance with magic, a powerful dark witch, drama, and more. Lady Isra is a powerful witch- with a bit of a black heart. Yes, she’s dark- but she is full of complexities which we discover along the way. She has serious trust issues, and a taste for revenge. What happens here makes for an interesting read. Whilst I did enjoy the story, it was a little slow to get going and lagged at times though the story- disrupting the pace and pulling me out of the story. I really wanted to love this book because it is one of my favourite genres- and the premise held so much promise. But I have had a crazy week, so maybe it was just me, and so I will revisit this book at a later date to see if I still feel the same way, or if I was just having an off day.

The Trouble With Paradise is the fourth book in the Madeline Dawkins series by Cynthia Hamilton. I am soooooooooo in love with this series- hands down one of the best discoveries I have made this year!!!! This is one of those series that you can read over and over again and never tire of it. After reading the first book and loving it so much, I was compelled to go on a one-click spree for any other books that I could find in the series. I ended up reading the series back to back, and several times over- that’s how much I enjoyed them. I went into this book with extremely high expectations because all the previous books were so brilliant- so part of me was a little trepidatious about reading it, wondering if Cynthia Hamilton could sustain the momentum and deliver another thrilling mystery. So, I am thrilled to say that I should never have doubted her as this book is every bit as wonderful and brilliant as the previous books- setting my anticipation levels on high for the release of Book Five!!! The story is so cleverly woven with intriguing mystery, suspense, drama, engrossing developments, action, danger, tension, romance, emotion, and so much more. Cynthia Hamilton once again puts Madeline and Mike through their paces- weaving a smart and thought provoking mystery infused with a dangerous tension that kept me on the edge of my seat for most of the story. This story takes place four months after the events of the previous book. Madeline and Mike end up with two cases involving grieving widows who need help to uncover what really happened to their husbands. One widow is in jail, charged with the murder of her older, wealthy husband. But did she really kill him? And if not, then what really happened? The other widow wants to prove that her husband’s death definitely wasn’t suicide. But, what will our detectives discover? As I have come to expect from Cynthia Hamilton, nothing is ever simple. She always manages to weave a complex, multilayered mystery with more than a few twisty surprises to get me sitting up and really paying attention. Add in the fact that Madeline’s snake of an ex is now released from prison, had me wondering what he was up to, and when he would make his move. He seems to have turned over a new leaf- but Madeline (and I) know better- and just how underhanded and vile he can be. So what unfolds makes for quite a thrilling read! As I have mentioned previously, I think The Madeline Dawkins books would make a fantastic television series- reminding me a lot of the old Moonlighting series with Cybil Shephard and Bruce Willis- but with more danger, excitement, and a modern ‘feel’. So, if you love a cleverly crafted and thrilling mystery then what are you waiting for! Grab yourself a copy and dive in- but be prepared to develop an addiction to Cynthia Hamilton’s stories- you may find that one book will never be enough. I am so desperate to find out what’s in store for Maddie and Mike- especially after the way this book ended! So, bring on Book Five!!! SQUEEEEEEE!!!! I can’t wait! Brilliant!!!!

Center of Gravityis the first book in the Ice Tigers series, and my first read by Isabella Cassazza. Even though this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a standalone. But, having said that this story has intrigued me enough to want to go back and read the first book too, before continuing the series. This is a sweet contemporary sports romance about finding love unexpectedly- with a couple of surprises thrown in to keep things interesting. The characters were well developed and endearing- making for a realistic and believable read that you won’t want to put down. Emilia Ravelli has lived in her grandfather’s shadow for so many years trying to live up to his expectations and earn his respect. But no matter what she does, how much she sacrifices, nothing she does seems to please him. She feels like a failure. Keeping up appearances and shouldering all the expectation and responsibility is not only exhausting, but also a little lonely. So, when her latest project fails to live up to her grandfather’s exacting standards, again, Emilia is sent halfway across the world knowing that this new assignment will be her last chance to prove herself. She has a lot riding on its success. One small problem- the assignment means taking over the management of the Boston Ice Tigers hockey team, with no experience in sports management and no clue about hockey, Emilia really doesn’t like her chances of success- especially with the secret she’s carrying. Matt Walker has thrown himself into his hockey career, trying desperately to leave behind all his personal dramas. He is focused on winning and definitely has no time for distractions. So, what happens when the new team manager arrives and turns his life upside down? If you love sports romance, or romantic stories in general- then you really won’t want to miss grabbing a copy of this book to read, to uncover the secret and discover all the other captivating details for yourself.

The Widow: A Dark Romantic Fantasy by Naomi Valkyrie and Rebecca E. McEwen is quite a surprising little package- a dark and mysterious fantasy that is so much more than it first appears. I really don’t want to go into any detail as I don’t want to give away the clever and surprising twist that really gave this book an added element of intrigue. The characters are really well developed with their own personalities, quirks and flaws. The scene setting and storytelling is quite rich, imaginative, and vividly descriptive. The authors have woven a lot into a relatively small amount of space, choreographing all the elements into quite an enthralling read. They also manage to infuse quite a lot of emotion into the storyline, making it easy to connect with the characters and invest in them and the outcome of their story. Well Done! Looking forward to more!

Bird In A Snareis the first book in The Lord Hani Mysteries by N.L Holmes. This is an historical mystery set in ancient Egypt, which the author does an excellent job of recreating and bringing to life. I could feel the authors passion for the period shine through in her writing, which added to the whole atmosphere of the story. Hani is a fantastic character, who along with the rest of the cast, help to bring this story alive. He is a loving father, husband, and a respected diplomat. This mystery begins when he is sent to far away Syria, uncovering a murder which could bring a great political backlash. Add in more dead bodies, corruption, politics, hidden agendas, and simmering tension- and this story really takes off. Looking forward to seeing what Hani gets up to in the next book!

The Slaughter of Leith Hall is a well woven historical murder mystery by Lexie Conyngham. It took me a little bit to get into the story and get my head around the period language/speak that is in keeping with the times, but was somewhat heavy, time consuming, and confusing to read. The story was slow to get going and lagged a little at times throughout the book- but the mystery was quite intriguing and I did feel compelled to finish the story so I could find out how everything played out in the end.

In the Arms of Morpheus, a Speculative Romanceis the second book in the Antiheroes seriesby Gaia B. Amman. When this book showed up on my recommended book list, it immediately grabbed my attention with the dramatic and intriguing cover, as well as the interesting title. I have read all of Ms. Amman’s books, so I knew it would be good- of course I let my fingers do a little one- clicking, then dove right in. This is such a thought provoking and engrossing story full of sci-fi elements, emotion, chemistry, spice, history, mythology, mysteriousness, suspense, drama, danger, secrets, sensitive issues, social + political commentary and messages – as well as other hot topics; and the complex and multidimensional characters I have now come to expect from Ms. Amman. There is a definite mysteriousness about the story- and I quickly realised that there was quite a lot more to the storyline, and characters than first appeared. But I would expect nothing less from such a creative mind such as Gaia B. Amman. I don’t want to give anything away- so I won’t go into the plot here- except to say that I think it is one of those stories that you are better off diving into a little ‘blind’- the blurb gives enough information to whet your appetite. So, if you love thought-provoking originality in your stories- woven with mythological elements, sci-fi, and sizzling romance, then you won’t want to miss out on reading this book! This is definitely my favourite book of Ms. Amman’s, to date- and I am looking forward to seeing what she does next.

Confidentiality is the second book in the Scope of Practice series by Jessica Aiken-Hall. This is another intriguing and suspenseful story which follows on from books one- full of all the gripping developments, drama, mystery, emotion, and dark twisty details that I have come to expect from Ms. Hall. But, lets face it, she had me at the mere mention of serial killer in the blurb. Valerie Williamson (Val) seems to have come such a long way since we met her in book one. Her life is going so well- things to look forward to, and as such she is intent on protecting her new-found happiness. But with secrets, lies, and a serial killer in the mix- thing soon take a gripping turn. Val is convinced there is a connection to the murders, and is intent on uncovering the truth, but will she put herself in danger in the process? This is well worth the read to find out!

Breaking Traditions: The Shifter and The Mage by Madilynn Dale is a paranormal romance with shifters, magic, fantasy, and a little drama. This is the second book of Ms. Dale’s that I have read, and is definitely my favourite (so far). Natalie comes from a long line of shifters. Her parents hold tight to the long-held traditions of their family and shifter community. They push her to get married and start a family as soon as possible. Natalie has other ideas- she dreams of living her own life, opening her own bakery, and forging her own way. Things get interesting when she meets Mage, Alex, who soon turns her life upside down. Tensions mount when her family discover Alex is a Mage- adding some drama to the story. Can Natalie break the strong traditions of her family/shifter community and follow her heart? Will Alex and Natalie find a way to be together? A sweet paranormal romance.

The Princess and the Pit Bulls is the fourth book in the Fairy Tale Seriesby Jody Lynn Daniels. It is a sweet contemporary romance, about finding love where you least expect it, with wonderful characters, secrets, intriguing developments, and just enough drama to keep things interesting. This is a modern take on the popular fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea”, and is a wonderful addition to the rest of this series. I love Chloe and Sebastian- and the addition of Bonnie and Clyde added an extra layer of charm to the story. Ms> Daniels has a wonderfully descriptive style, and an attention to detail that really brings her stories to life. She also manages to infuse quite a lot of emotion into her story, drawing me further and further into her tale and allowing me to truly connect with the characters and what they are experiencing. Definitely my favourite of the series, so far!
