Of War and Taters is written by Ashley Chappell is a book that kept me laughing. I have read some of her other books but this one is something completely different. Her other books are fantasy and this one is what starts out as a fourth-grade schoolyard battle and develops into something beyond crazy. The characters kept me in stitches and I couldn’t read this fast enough. Not only do you have the students but crazy media, a ghost making his comeback, and a Sheriff trying to keep everything together. I have always enjoyed her books but this has me as a fan. I love the small town could be any small town getting up to all sorts of shenanigans. I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

I loved everything about this book. My only question is how, as a lover of Terry Pratchett, have I NEVER stumbled across Chappell before now? Her wit oozes from each page and happily finds a home in your heart regardless of your age (good thing since I’m most definitely not in the YA group!). Sharp, poignant, fantastically tongue-in-cheek, this book had me enraptured from beginning to end. What a wonderful addition to every library. You must pick it up – NOW!!

OMG…I loved this book, and can not figure out how this is my first book by this author. If this is her writing style and creativity with storylines then I can promise this will be the first of many I read by this author.

I’m a small town girl and love reading about small towns and this small town was everything for me.

I can’t even think of where to start reviewing this book except to say if you love reading mysteries with a twist and laughing your fool head off while your reading then this is absolutely the book for you. The characters..each one is written so perfectly and each one has their own little storyline going on and there’s no way I can pick a favorite.

Read this book…it was an awesome break from some of the super heavy books I’ve been reading lately. I will read this again and might even buy this for my grandsons because I think they would seriously love it 🙂

With a title like this one, I wasn’t sure what to expect but what a hidden gem of a book!
I laughed throughout this book which was helpful as i’ve read pretty heavy as of late.
It took just a bit to get into the swing of the writing style and the pov’s going through many people, but once it clicked i took off flying through the pages.
What happens when the media gets involved, a circus comes to town and a ghost? This book does.

Loved Sheriff Stanley!
Must read.

I give Of War and Taters by Ashley Chappell, 5 stars.

The sleepy little town of Merit is quiet no more. A bunch of reporters have flocked there once they heard about the rival gangs this town has. Little did they know they “gangs” were just a bunch of ten-year-olds. Plus the travelling circus decided to get some of this attention and stopped over there. Oh and don’t forget the ghost actor. Sheriff Stanley, used to nothing happening in his town, doesn’t know how to stop this sudden chaos and bad rumors. Then he finds a grisly discovery that hints at worse things going on. Will he be able to step up and take charge or is his little town doomed?

If you do not appreciate humor and satire, this book may not be for you. However, if you do, this book is right up your alley. Something completely different from what I’ve read of this author before, she does a brilliant job of putting just the right amount of humor and sarcasm into this story while still keeping it a mystery book too. Is most of what happens completely outlandish? Yes, but that is what makes it so great! At the same time, there is a touch of heart in here too. The kids great and the poor sheriff puts up with so much. The people could easily be your eccentric neighbors who live down the road. The story itself has so much going on in so many directions, but it all ties together wonderfully. I could not put this down until I reached the end. I would love to see more of this town in the future.

If you enjoy a humorous whodunit the likes of which you have never read before, this book is for you.

Of War and Taters by Ashley Chappell is a sarcastic, witty, unusual story. It is one of those things that you go, oh this is so stupid it is funny kind of things. It is a satire from start to finish and is hard to put down. It is one that you find yourself laughing at but you want to smack yourself in the head for laughing. The story is based on the residents of a small town who thanks to rival gangs the town gets far more than is bargained for but in amongst that there is mystery, ghosts and drama that goes with living in a small town. This tongue in cheek story will leave you laughing long after you finish.

A quick and satirical read that that was full of humor. The story flows well from beginning to end and it kept me intrigued and humored.

OF WAR AND TATERS is one of those books that I want to write a flowing and detailed summary, but I don’t want to recap the entire story. Trust me when I say it is super funny and worth the read. As someone who works in the newspaper industry, this line tickled my funny bone… “There was a sickness that afflicted some newspaper readers that forced them to read it from cover to cover aloud to anyone who might be in the room.”

There is also an interesting point of view shared in the story. Ok, I’m stopping now because I don’t want to say more.

I recommend it.

OF WAR AND TATERS by Ashley Chappell was a fun read that had a little bit of everything, that kept me both entertained and engaged.

Not my first read by this author, so I knew going in that I was in for a well written witty read, with intertwining elements. I was not led astray, and this book brought what it stated. Now I will say that I did find the pacing a little slow at times, especially with all the different POV’s. But overall, it wasn’t that much of a bad thing. I did love how every different element was connected somehow, and the dog, Mr. Cuddle Face, it was like this little innocent voice that popped in; made me smile, and just had me wanting to steel him away.

Overall this book is a fun quick read that will have you second guessing, scratching your head and laughing. It was the perfect little mix of fun, drama, spoof, dark humour, mystery and entertainment. This book will keep you reading, and it will have you wondering why there isn’t more like it. I do hope there is more to come from this wonderful little world that the author has created.

To end this book gets my super high recommendation and my stamp of approval.

Happy Reading.

This story is amazing. It has different elements from romance, to mystery and murder and shows how adult attitudes can affect children’s behaviour towards each other.

The town of Merit is a quiet peaceful place where children are children and no real crime ever happens.

Until one day that all changes and Sheriff Stanley finds himself with a town suffering from a mad circus, a war about racisim between the children and a murderer on the loose.

I really enjoyed this book once i got into it. At first there was to many characters introduced at once but i kept reading and really enjoyed it

Of War and Taters by Ashley Chappell is a funny and clever story that will keep you entertained the whole way through.
This book hosts a ton of brilliant and strong characters, each with their own stories that only add to the overall storyline. It is funny right from the word go. There were quite a few times that this book had me laughing out loud.
There was a lot going on with the story but the author did a great job at tying all the threads together and keeping the story moving along nicely. As the first book I have read by this author I felt it was a great showcase as to what she is like. I am looking forward to exploring more of her work in the future.

This is a thoroughly engaging story. Each character has their own Individual story going on with their larger than life personalities but it’s how they all come together that makes this so good. It’s full of humor, wit and don’t forget sarcasm. This takes place in basically ANY town USA. Except there is murder, mystery, mayhem and….the circus. These characters and situations are something that happen could happen to anyone and that makes them easy to identify with as well as chuckle at. I personally loved listening to the fourth grader gangs divide the town with their “map”. The names of the places reminded me of my youth. Ah…looking through a child’s eyes.
This is my first time reading this author. I find her story tricky but smooth. Easy to follow and the characters…colorful.

The story Of War and Taters by Ashley Chappell is an entertaining and intriguing book. It hooked me in from the very beginning and once I started, I found that I didn’t want to put it down until I had read the last page. It has some mystery and suspense as well as a good portion of humorous moments as well. Welcome to Merit. Here Sheriff Stanley Grace has found himself pulled into several situations going on at once and has Stanley trying to stay one step ahead. The book has a good pace to it and there are times when I wished I could read faster as I just had to know how it ends. What does the future hold for Sheriff Stanley Grace and the town of Merit? Read this book to find out. Besides Stanley, there are many other characters that are introduced, and I enjoyed the interactions they have with each other and the sheriff. One of the characters that stands out is the ghost of a recently murdered actor who is trying to stage a comeback. It is a story that I found myself staying awake into the night to find out the ending. I highly recommend reading it.

I was pulled in right from the first page and read it in one sitting. This is a well written story that had me laughing for most of the story. The characters are strong and made the story come alive. First you have fourth graders in gangs, than you have the circus come to town, plus a dead actor comes back as a ghost and on top of all that Sheriff Stanley has his own issues going on. Their story will keep you reading just waiting to see what will happen next. I highly recommend this book.

Of War and Taters by Ashley Chappell is a delightfully fun read, full of hilarious tongue-in-cheek moments which took the story from just a clever book, to a whole new level of enjoyment. I have read a couple of Ms. Chappell’s books previously and have really enjoyed them, but this book has just become my firm favourite read of hers!
There is so much to like about this small-town Southern Satire, from the clever storyline, to the witty dialogue, the colourful & quirky characters, paranormal elements, mystery, danger, creepy/spooky details, clever touches, and even a little bit of mayhem.
I thought the characters were ALL so superbly developed- with their own individual personalities, quirks, and flaws. They were entirely interesting and likeable. I thought it was quite clever of Ms. Chappell to follow several characters, and have several threads unravelling through the story. There was quite a lot going on, but she choreographed it all wonderfully well. And for such a zany story, it also had a touching and heart-warming quality as well.
If you’re looking for a hilarious and incredibly entertaining story, with a clever and intriguing plot, and fantastic characters to entice you into the story- then this is definitely the book for you!

Thank you, Ms. Chappell!

The media, celebrities, and a visiting circus descend upon them, turning the citizens, parents, and even children against one another as they look for someone to blame.

When the ghost of a recently deceased actor arrives to stage his post-mortem comeback, he becomes the only link Stanley has to a bloodied police uniform discovered just outside of town. While chaos reigns in Merit, a killer is on the loose. Now it’s up to Sheriff Stanley to save his town from killers, newshounds, and circus clowns alike.

A God of Gods (Dreams of Chaos Series Book #3) by Ashley Chappell – Review by Angela Hayes

A God of Gods (Dreams of Chaos, #3)A God of Gods by Ashley Chappell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

God of Gods is the third book in the Dreams of Chaos series by Ashley Chappell. It is a Young Adult fantasy packed with action, adventure, mythology, magic, gods, mystical creatures, different realms/worlds… and so much more.
Trotter is struggling with her destiny. This book sees her having to make difficult choices and managing huge responsibilities. Once again, she is caught up in life and death situations that will test her like never before. This is a high stakes adventure that will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens and there is so much going on in this book- it’s an adventure from start to finish.
I thought this story was even darker and a much more of a mature read than the first two books, which I really like. Again, Ms. Chappell did a great job creating a rich and unique world(s), and building wonderful backstory, myths and in-depth lore around this imaginative tale. Her storytelling is creative, imaginative, detailed and descriptive.
The character development is quite good, the story abounds with interesting, unique and quirky characters.
Great addition to the series!

Thank you, Ms. Chappell!

A God of Gods is the third book in the Dreams of Chaos series. It is highly recommended that you read the first two books before you read this one. If you read this one without reading the previous ones, you will not have all of the background that you need.

I love this series! The characters have depth and the story is engaging. My favorite characters at this point are Prowler and Erwin for their sarcastic humor, Miskarot for her no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is attitude, and Eric because he is finding out that his past does not define his character. I also really enjoyed the evolution of Eric and Ali’s relationship, and the way that Crane steps up to acknowledge his connection to Trotter.

Trotter and her friends have been through a lot in the span of the first two books. They have been successful at facing evil. But, now the darkness threatens to end existence and it wants to use Trotter to bring it about. Whereas before they were relying on something larger than themselves to help them fight, now they realize that the gods are nearly powerless against this new enemy. There is one answer that may save them all, but there is a high price to pay.

A God of Gods pushes all of the feeling buttons, at least for me it did. Laughter, sorrow, anger, love, adventure, betrayal…this book has it all.

Tilt (Dreams of Chaos #2)Tilt by Ashley Chappell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Tilt is the second book in the Dreams of Chaos series. Even though you can pick up this book and read it without necessarily reading the first book, I highly recommend getting the first book anyway. I fell in love with the first book almost immediately, and Tilt is just as wonderful. There is a stunning array of colorful characters to both love and hate. Where the first book introduced concepts of how powerful our mind’s creative ability can be, Tilt deals with the struggle of learning how to properly use your power without losing yourself. I cannot recommend these books enough.

Trotter, the daughter of gods, is seeing her world change right before her eyes. The days are becoming shorter and the tides are out of synch. Having been forbidden to stay in Realm, home of the gods, Trotter is on her own trying to figure out what is happening. She soon discovers the gods forgotten creation and is thrown into a new world. Even as her own home is being destroyed, Trotter finds that the world she has discovered is also in danger. Trotter has to make a decision that she avoided making in the first book, and it will change everything…even her. A new power is growing within Trotter, but is it something that will be even more dangerous than what they are already facing?

Tilt has action, adventure, bravery, gods and monsters, friendship, a bit of romance, and a lot of life lessons. I love the new additions to the cast of characters, especially Erwin. Superior humor is a must when dealing with monsters invading the land. Get the book. Read the book. You will not be disappointed!

Alice Will (Dreams of Chaos #1) by Ashley Chappell – Review by Naomi McDonald

Alice Will (Dreams of Chaos #1)Alice Will by Ashley Chappell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Alice Will is the first book in the Dreams of Chaos series. It doesn’t take long for this book to draw you in. There are may colorful characters and a great story line; it will keep you entertained from beginning to end. While reading the book I was particularly struck by the way the author was able to weave the idea of the empty void of Chaos holding all possibilities. I also really liked the way the book speaks about the concept of the mind being what creates reality. I have worked with both of these concepts spiritually and it is great to see them woven into a novel. I think this story will be a great way to introduce these ideas to my kids when they are a little older.

My favorite character in the series so far is Prowler. I love his sarcasm and wit. He brings great humor to the story with his antics.

Trotter is a teenager with powers she is reluctantly getting acquainted with. Although, living among humans who aren’t fond of magic is a great motivator to not really try to use them at all. The problem with that is, because she isn’t using them, her powers are leaking out and she’s having difficulty controlling them. She happy just going about her day like a normal person and not using powers, but apparently, she’s not going to have much of a choice.

When the world as she knows it begins to experience changes, Trotter is accused of being the one that started it. It was a case of wrong place, wrong time, but fear does strange things to people and now Trotter has to find the true source of the imbalance. Enter Alice. War is coming…and Trotter is the key to stopping it.

Intrigue. Laughter. Sadness. Chaos. Connection. Imagination. It’s a roller coaster you never want to stop riding.

Alice Will (Dreams of Chaos #1)Alice Will by Ashley Chappell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Alice Will by Ashley Chappell is a brilliant fantasy story that follows two girls, Alice and Trotter, who both have incredible powers that they don’t fully understand or know how to control. They live in a world of gods and magic where their powers attract a lot of attention. It’s the first book in the Dreams of Chaos series.

I’ve really enjoyed reading this book. The fantasy setting has something of a Neil Gaiman feel to it, with elements that also bring to mind Lewis Carroll and Douglas Adams. It’s very whimsical and at times surreal – a real treat for the imagination!

Alice and Trotter are both great characters. Their powers allow them to shape their realities according to their wishes and fantasies. Trotter is more hesitant with her powers – as she is older she’s had more experiences of things going wrong. And she has Prowler – a talking cat who tries his very best to stop her doing anything dangerous!

The story has plenty of mysteries to unravel and threats to worry about. The narrative shifts frequently between different strands of the story, often leaving the reader on a slight cliffhanger.

I’d definitely recommend this to fantasy fans looking for something new to read. I’m already thinking of friends I could get it for! It’s a great story, brilliant setting and loveable characters. A solid 5 stars from me!
