We’re still with Tyler in this third installment of a series I’ve grown to love. As an advocate for mental illness in real life (outside of being a reader), I was heartbroken at how they stigmatized Tyler. My heart also goes out to Hen as he’s dealing with a lot on his own as well: This book is what I call refreshingly honest. From that perspective, I dove right in and was gripped with all of this story and never looked back. I love this book so much I keep re-reading. Pick it up and enjoy!

Boy Released
This book is a follow-up to Boy on Hold. Its after 10 years when Tyler was released from prison and starts reacclimating into life in a cabin that isn’t rented out in a hotel purchased by Tylers mom Marcella and his stepfather Bernie. Hen is involved and works at the hotel. Things get disrupted when Marcella is attacked, and the suspect is only Tyler especially when he came running out trying to explain what he saw and it’s mistaken for his confession. Who truly did this? Will they find out or will Tyler be locked up forever? This book can be read as a standalone, but I find having the history to go with it is great as well.

Wow! Boy Released is the gripping sequel to Boy on Hold, by JD Spero. We pick back up with the Trout family years after their ordeal. We learn more about each of them and how they, especially Tyler, are coping with life now and Tyler’s diagnosis. Then, tragedy strikes again, but this time it’s Marcella, Tyler and Hen’s mom who is attacked. Again, Tyler is suspect number one! What really happened? Will there be justice?

The depth of the character and world development makes this one truly special. The light shed on mental illness and how it affects individuals, as well as those around them make this book different than others in the genre. Another great, page-turning read!

**The synopsis for Boy Released gives away a detail for the first book, Boy On Hold; I highly recommend reading the first book before reading this book or this review.**

Although I recommend to read this series in order, you can start with this book. The synopsis gives the reader an understanding of the Trout family’s past if you haven’t read Boy On Hold.

Again, I was on the edge of my seat reading this book! Fast forward 10 years and we are following Tyler’s release from psychiatric rehab and the Trout family’s new dealings with the justice system.

Spero’s writing continues to flow smoothly and not falter between characters views or jumps to the past and present. Definitely want these books on my shelf!

J.D Spero, followed Boy on Hold up fantastically with Boy Released. Boy Released puts us back into a world 10 years after the Murder of Miss. Sally. Hen is almost of age to come into his inheritance of Miss. Sally’s estate.
Miss Sally was the neighbor who used to help out and babysit Hen as a child, until one night his older brother Tyler had a mental break and accidentally killed her.
Tyler, recently released from a mental hospital, is living in one of the cabins in the resort his mother(Marcella) and Bernie own. Now that Tyler is back home with his family it’s a process to reintegrate him back into the world and everyday life. It also brings about animosity and some long repressed feelings from long ago, amongst them all.
Till one night Tyler watches through his cabin’s window his mother being attacked in the resort office. An attack that he admits taking the blame for so he could get the 1 clue to the right person, “For 300 m&m’s.”
A story of redemption of sorts for Tyler, as Boy Released progresses forward. If you choose to view it that way. It dives deeper into the realms of mental illness and the impact that has on one’s life and those around them. If you enjoy this author like I do and enjoy a fantastic psychological thriller/with a story of redemption thrown in, J.D Spero does not disappoint! Wonderfully written, with easy to follow character arcs it’s worth the read TRUST ME!

It is ten years after Tyler Trout was sent to psychiatric rehab after his mental illness caused a psychotic break and his family are still reeling from the murder of their next door neighbour Sally Hubbard and to help with their grief, they moved to the small resort town of Lake George Village and bought the Blue Palm Motel where they now live and work. Hen has grown up into a handsome young man and helps out doing the domestic work in the rooms while his mum, Marcella and Bernie, her partner handle the finances and the odd jobs, meanwhile Tyler has just returned and is living in one of the cabins as he starts to work towards some sort of independence.

As they are all settling into a routine, Tyler is managing to hold down a job at a local store, but his mental health takes a dive when someone from his past turns up and sets back the progress he has made, meanwhile, Hen is taking on more responsibility as the busy summer season starts and preparing for the transition to adulthood in just one short year when he will have to make some serious decisions about his future, whether that involves college or continuing to work at the motel, as well as deciding what to do with his inheritance money once he comes of the age to take ownership of it, all while trying to support his mum and keep up some semblance of normality by spending time with his friends.

All this comes crashing down around the Trout’s when Marcella is attacked at the office and Tyler is the only witness to the altercation, however, the information is locked inside his mind and the turmoil in which it constantly spins, however, when he approaches the office after the attack happens and incriminating himself in the process, his family have to confront Tyler’s illness all over again. Will Tyler be able to make anyone understand the information he holds in his mind and how important it is, or will they believe that he is capable of hurting his family and keep him in detention? Can his family overcome their own personal views of Tyler and help him to reintegrate into society, or will they fail to see beyond his diagnosis? This is a heart rending tale of mental illness and how it can affect those around them, as well as being an emotional rollercoaster of emotions as you become invested in the lives and trials of a family many can relate to.

This is the second book in the Boy Series and is set ten years after the first one ends. Tyler is out of the psychiatric rehab, Marcella bought a hotel, and Hen is 17 now and looking at his future. Sounds like things are looking up. Then Marcella is attacked, and Tyler is arrested for the crime. How much can this poor family go through?
My heart ached for Marcella who just wanted the best for her boys. I cried for Hen who was thrown into memories of the past watching his brother get arrested again. I could never imagine having a brain like Tyler’s due to his schizophrenia that takes in things differently than we think is “normal”. Can this family survive another disaster? Or does this once again remind them how much they love each other? JD Spero did it again, a heart wrenching story that made me feel every emotion to the core.

This is the second book in the series and JD Spero takes us 10 years after the first book. Tyler is released from the psychiatric facility and going to be living with his mom Marcella. This is a new neighborhood in a motel in a resort community.
The past is coming back when everyone is trying to adapt to their new lives. Add to that Hen is trying to figure things out with his impending inheritance and the burden it carries. An attack on Marcella leaves everyone believing the worst about Tyler. Could it really be him?
Another good book that kept me reading all the way through.

Boy Released by J.D. Spero is the second book to Boy On Hold. This book takes place ten years after the murder that Tyler, then a little boy, witnessed. He is released from a psychiatric institution and reunited with his brother, Hen, and their family. Boy Released takes on mental illness and is full of suspense and thrills. This book, like the one before it, is HARD to put down. I recommend reading the first book before this one, but even if read on its own, this book would be enjoyable. The characters are so well-written, and climbing inside Tyler’s schizophrenic mind is intriguing and this family’s story will hook you until the very end. I was swept away and came to love this family from the first book, and it was no different with this one.

Boy Released by JD Spero. First off wow just wow. I knew I’d probably like this book since book one was great but I didn’t just like it I loved it. This author knows how to write a story that gripped me from the get go. Not once did I feel like this story needed anything. I do recommend you reading these in order. This one takes place several years after book 1 but it’s a very well done transition. The characters are complex and pull you so completely into their story that I forgot time all together. The storyline is one of the best I’ve read this yea. I couldn’t put this book down and I’m thankful to not only find this book but this author. Five huge stars and highly recommended!

Boy Released was a really interesting read! This is the sequel to the novel Boy On Hold and this can be read as a standalone but it does make more sense and you get the whole back story if you read Boy On Hold first. This was very interesting as Tyler has schizophrenia and it was very interesting just reading inside his mind, and how it works and is wired differently. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one better than the first. I’m not sure why but this one just held my attention better and I flew through it. It was so quick to read and was enthralling all the way through. I really enjoyed this one and highly recommend it!

BOY RELEASED (BOY SERIES BOOK 2) by JD Spero. I am in love with these books. They are so very good and they tackle the real life problem of mental illness. Its so taboo to talk about Mental health so I am so happy to see someone write about it. This book picks up 10 years after the last book and after Tyler was convicted of murder. He has been living in a psychiatric ward and is being released out into the world again. Hen is about to receive an inheritance so she, Sally & Marcella are moving into the Blue Palms Motel which is her new baby (business). Not long after Tyler moves to the hotel someone is found dead and Tyler is the only witness. Of course shortly after the murder Tyler becomes their prime suspect and Marcella is involved as well. Will they be able to prove Tyler is innocent or is he really a murderer that will continue to commit crimes? Read Boy Released you won’t be disappointed!

I love books that stay with you long after you finish that last page, and BOY ON HOLD was a one that was with me for a very long time so my excitement for BOY RELEASED, the second book in this gripping series was palpable. I cleared an afternoon and was thrilled when the thunder was loud the morning of that day as it really set the tone for this book. It will evoke the feelings of dread, sadness, and fear as well as those feelings of family and hope, survival and love that really make you question and think on your values and belief systems that you have. Who doesn’t love a novel that does that as it takes you away to a fictional place as well? In this one we do find ourselves revisiting the same family from BOY ON HOLD, the Trout family, ten years after the tragedy that plagued them then. A new disaster is on the horizon and will send the family through a whole new set of debacles. I couldn’t put this sucker down and read it all in one sitting wishing for more right then. I can only hope we will see more from this author along the same lines in the near future!

Boy Released by J.D. Spero a fantastic four-star read. This one takes place a number of years after the first story Boy on Hold and tells just as a compelling story, dealing with mental health in an honest and refreshing manner, and it is best if you read that one first, as it gives you a deeper understanding and gets you used to the writing style, as the different POV’s can be challenging, but it does add something to the story, more than just the overall view, it adds more drama to me. This is a great story, and one that stays with you as you read.

Having read the first book and fallen in love with the different characters that JD Spero captured in the multi point of view telling in the first book I could not wait to read on to see what happened to them. I would recommend reading Boy on Hold first. The story takes place ten years after the conclusion of Boy on Hold and is told in similar multi character point of view. Tyler is released from rehab at the psychiatric ward, Hen is now 17 about to receive his inheritance from Sally Hubbard, and Marcella has moved the family to the Blue Palms Motel, her new business. An unfortunate event occurs at the Motel involving Marcella and this time Tyler is the only witness. The old saying “The past comes back to haunt us” rings true as Tyler is turned into a suspect due to his past. Marcella knows the truth, but proving her son innocent is not an easy task.

The book is well written and draws you in. I simply could not put the book down. The depth of the characters feels real allowing you to relate to them. Though they are fictional they could easily be real people with real struggles of today. JD Spero captures the struggles of mental illness, schizophrenia in this case, on both individual and the family in her books.

This book was fabulous! Revisiting these characters after ten years of their normal lives was inspired. Their relationships are so genuine and it’s clear that each relationship matters to each of them. Hen, on the cusp of adulthood, facing such challenging struggles and still rising to meet them is an inspiration to everyone. Family is so central in this book, and it’s just so gritty but also intimate in a way that captures reality at its most difficult.

Having read ‘Boy on Hold’ I was keen to read this follow up which continues the story ten years later, after the murder of Sally Hubbard. Tyler who was convicted of the murder has been released from psychiatric rehab and Hen is about to inherit the Hubbard estate. Just as life is looking better for the Trout’s another tragedy occurs. The Trout’s now run the Blue Palms Motel but after an unwelcome visitor attacks Marcella, Tyler is the only witness to the brutal attack. Tyler yet again quickly goes from witness to suspect as his past comes back to haunt him. The family yet again have to confront Tyler’s mental health as well as prove his innocence. I would definitely recommend reading the first book before this one to really understand the backstory and the Trout family. The setting is the small Adirondacks resort town which once again the author brings to life. I was hooked as soon I started reading and was instantly immersed in the Trout family’s story again. As with the first book it’s the characters that really drew me into the story and made me feel engaged with them. The storyline does cover some heavy issues which make for a difficult and upsetting read at times, including mental health but these themes are dealt with sensitively. Although this is an emotional read it’s also a thought provoking one which I could not put down.

This story continues 10 years later, with Ty coming home after years in rehabilitation. Here you will read how this family stands together. How they are coming to terms with mental illness and how they are building a stronger family. Hen is almost 18 now and has a large inheritance coming his way. So he will also have some big decisions to make. Read on to see if this family can come together and build a brighter future.

J. D. Spero does not disappoint in this the second book of the Boy Series. This story felt real as we all have people we know, fighting similar situations. This story is through and fast paced. I could not put it down. I enjoyed book 1 and looked forward to this one. I experienced many emotions while reading the story of Ty and Hens. In this sequel to Boy On Hold, we jump ahead to Tyler being released from the psychiatric facility and moving home to Marcella’s. Marcella has moved away from the neighborhood where the incident happened. Marcella and Bernie have purchased and are running a motel in a resort community.

The past comes back to haunt this family trying to make a brand new start. Tyler is adapting to freedom. Everyone is adapting to having Tyler home. Hen is coming to grips with his impending inheritance and the burden it carries. An attack on Marcella leaves everyone believing the worst about Tyler. Was it the sins of the past catching up with the future? Could it be Tyler?

Again, J.D. Spero leaves the reader on slow burn. You know what happened but find yourself questioning what you know. Could it be Tyler? And, then BAM! The world tilts and the sunshine differently. I don’t know what happens next in Hen’s world, but I am along for the ride. Brava!!! J.D., brava!

It was nice to see where everyone is many years later but I really wasn’t expecting a second book. I really enjoyed Hen and was shocked over Tyler in the first book. In this story it was nice to see the changes in both of these boys as they both come to terms with their are new living situation and lives. The story does provide a lot of thought-provoking ideas.

Overall it was an OK book. I really felt it dwelled a lot on Tyler and it was more written for him and how he is coping with life. Then a little of Hen’s stalled life and their mother’s changes. The story seemed slow at times for me. I did enjoy how a lot of things came full circle and each character was giving a difficult task or challenge to overcome.

Boy ReleasedBoy Released by J.D. Spero

J.D. Spero brings the Trout family back with her newest novel in the series, “ Boy Released”, which takes place ten years after “Boy on Hold”.

Ten years after the tragedy that changed her life forever, Marcella and Bernie are now owners and proprietors of the Blue Palms Motel, a motel set in the Adirondack Mountains. Hen is now seventeen and preparing for his future, suffering through all the trials and tribulations that adolescence brings. Tyler, after serving his sentence in a psychiatric facility for the murder of his former neighbour Sally, has returned to live under his mother’s supervision. When Marcella is brutally attacked in the motel office one night, and Tyler admits responsibility, the Trout family is again under the legal spotlight, faced to confront Tyler’s psychiatric demons once more.

Spero’s recently published second novel in this series is just as gripping and emotionally unsettling as the first. In “Boy Released”, Tyler is now trying to cope with life outside of an institution, under the support and supervision of his family, who are trying to move on from the events of ten years ago. Spero is consistent in detailing Tyler’s struggles with schizophrenia, and the heartbreaking series of events that once again, change his young life.

Of course, Hen is back, although in this book he is a young man, making decisions about his future. Although he is a teenager, Hen is still as likable and charming as he was in the first novel, and his dedication to his family is honestly portrayed. Marcella and Bernie are now in a romantic relationship, after the events of the last book forced them to see each other in a new light, but their pairing only makes me like them more. When the final twist at the end is revealed, and a character from the past returns, it was unexpected and satisfying.

Most of the chapters in this novel, especially the ones being narrated from Tyler’s perspective, are told through broken and choppy sentences, which pulled at my inner “grammar nerd”, but I enjoyed how Spero told the story from the viewpoint of not only Tyler, but Marcella and Derek, too. These narrations by minor players helped to piece together the plot.

Spero brings a delightful end to her “Boy” series with “Boy Released”, while still highlighting the tragedy that mental illness (in this case, schizophrenia) can bring to a family. The Trout family are an adorably enjoyable group, and I loved watching them grow together throughout this series.

Boy Released is the follow-up story to Boy On Hold by J.D. Spero. While I would say this book could be read as a standalone, I enjoyed it so much more having read the first book. There is so much history you need to know, so I would recommend starting there.

Boy Released reunites us with the characters from book one and takes place ten years later. Tyler is now back with his family, and after his mother is attacked is now the main suspect due to his troubled history.
This story is an emotional rollercoaster. It combines mystery, compassion, and heartbreak and keeps the reader on their toes and turning pages. The characters are wonderful, and you get to hear from several different points of view throughout the story. The author writes in a way that makes you completely understand what each character is going through, even when they have different thoughts and opinions, you can relate to them all. I loved this story and thought it was an excellent follow-up.

Boy Released is set ten years from The Boy on Hold. Tyler has been released from a psychiatric hospital with a lot of support. He has a therapist, a social worker, and a job at the Mini Chopper. He is living on-site at the motel that Bernie and Marcella purchased in one of the cabins they don’t rent out.

Hen is now a seventeen-year-old who is working by helping to clean the cabins as summer visitors leave. He is preparing to start his senior year of high school. His inheritance from Miss Sally is hanging over him like a storm cloud ready to burst.

Things are going okay around the Blue Palms Motel until Marcella is attacked in the motel office one night. Tyler watches the whole thing from his cabin on the other side of the property. He runs out just as the police arrive shouting. Hen arrives at the same time and rushes in to see their mom before she is taken to the hospital. With the confusion and a phrase that the police use as his confession, Tyler is behind bars again.

Who attacked Marcella? Was it Tyler or someone else who might have an ax to grind?
