Here is a story that took me way out of this world as soon as I opened the book! I find that my fave books start like right in the thick of things…not a whole lot of explanation, but the story builds and in chapter 2 you find out what’s really going on! Jester is a book that follows a young lady who is in her mind within reach of this grand title. She understands heavily that her competition is annoying, yet excites her, even though he always seems to be winning. Watching how she almost matures during this process makes the story so relatable in terms of emotions and how to deal with them! I love this book and I look forward to more from the author!

I don’t give 5 stars very often, but I really loved this book. It drew me in immediately and the world-building was fascinating. I found the characters interesting and felt invested in Lis’s journey from the beginning. Although it had some familiar tropes, I found it to be a beautifully written original story.

Jester is an exciting fantasy that combines paranormal magic with performative illusions. Young adult and teen readers who enjoy magic tricks and circus skills will love this story!
Lisette, who goes by the stage name Mirage, is struggling to survive in a competitive world of entertainers. Relying on every show to pay for her next meal, she is desperate for a more stable and lucrative gig. Unfortunately, there’s a lot standing between her and the coveted position of Queen’s Jester, including her talented and beautiful competitor Luc and the fact that her father killed the King.
I particularly enjoyed how the dynamic between Luc and Lisette evolved over the course of the story. And there’s a great cast of supporting characters we meet along the way, such as the somewhat sleazy Del, and the mischievous young Cillian.
This book gets five stars from me! Totally enchanting, I struggled to put it down.

Lisette spent most of her life learning parlour tricks in a world ravaged in magic. She was set to inherit her father’s magic but he ends up being executed for killing the king, and ends up taking the magic with him to the grave. She has one goal and will do anything to get it. Become the next Jester to the clean and join the higher ups she was meant to be a part of.

Unfortunately she has a rival competing for the same title, Luc, who has real magic. After Luc ruined one of her shows, she got revenge which resulted in a game of tag. They also have a very strong will they/won’t they vibe throughout the book

Eventually some evidence surfaces and it makes the Queen a suspect in the King’s murder. Lisette has a choice to make. What is more important to her? The goal she set for herself as a child, to be rich and famous or to clear her father’s name.

I really enjoyed this book. Lisette is stubborn, determined, strong and witty. I very much enjoyed getting to know her as a character. Luc, not so much. He was a pompous arse and I hated him from day one. He thought he was all that and a bag of chips, using his charm and looks to his advantage. Although after a while he becomes more human making him more likeable as time goes on.

I was quite entertained in the beginning of the book but at some part I became completely engrossed in it and unable to put it down. Time was irrelevant and I absorbed myself into this world. Brielle D. Porter is an amazing author, and I can’t wait to see what adventure she’ll take us on next!

Lisette is a determined female lead and her honesty with herself is definitely refreshing. Her father was known as the Kingkiller and she isn’t sure she will ever live it down, but she isn’t going to just sit idly by and deal with what life gave her. Her ultimate goal is to obtain the position of the Queen’s Jester but there are quite a few obstacles in her way. Will she be able to redeem her family name and win the crown’s attention, or will her career disappear in a cloud of smoke?

If this is Brielle D. Porter’s debut novel, watch out world! She is bound for amazing things. She has written an incredible magical tale and I’m excited to see more from her. You won’t be disappointed with this original otherworldly book!

Jester by Brielle D. Porter is a fun read that takes you to Oasis, a city similar to Las Vegas with its gambling, street shows, and majestic atmosphere. This is a YA book, but be advised it does have a few more mature topics like showgirl costumes, and being groped just to name a few. That being said I would recommend this book for a more mature teen.

I really enjoyed this book which is filled with action, competition, magic, enemies, romance, and so much more. We get to see Lisette (Mirage) tell her story and experience things through her eyes. She is left on her own after her father is executed for murdering the king. Despite not having magic to rely on she uses her quick wit and determination to thrive to become a contestant in the deadly competition to be chosen as the highest-ranked magician in the world, the Queen’s Jester. Her biggest rival is Luc, a guy who processes real magic. Their rivalry is one for the ages.

I’m so amazed that Jester is Brielle D. Porters’ debut novel, because it is a wonderfully written tale for the ages. She is definitely a author to watch out for.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As a debut novel, this book was well written with varying levels of intricacy. While it does take some time to unravel the strings of some characters it is fascinating to have several stories within one story.

Lisette has only one dream, to become the Queen’s jester. After all it seems to be one way out of the poverty life her father’s acts placed upon her along with the disadvantage to not having the family magic. Luc is also competing to become the Queen’s jester and is Lisette’s fiercest competitor. Yet as you unravel their tales and they grow closer to each other and closer to the competition more secrets are revealed. Will these secrets lead Lisette to her fame or familial redemption?

In some books it is clear to identify the villain of the story and the heroines. But not in this book, you root for some and find out you don’t like them as much in the end. While at times the buildup is slow, the cast of characters is diverse and captivating. The author does a beautiful job weaving together the different character backgrounds into one masterful tale full of mystery and intrigue.

YA fantasy books are becoming some of the best books around! The characters are so very well developed and unique. This year alone I have found such wonderful YA books, and this is yet again another. Pick it up and be prepared to be amazed when you are not able to put it down.
Lisette was such a fierce and out of the box type FMC. A true anti-hero, and the first female one for me. The death of her father left her in a bad way due to the magic he possessed never being passed down to her. She was determine to make her way no matter the cost, and she was prepared to do even the unthinkable. You will question her character, but be her biggest fan all the same. This is a story you will not want to miss.

Absolute Must Read! Fantasy with magic and in a sin city that reminds me of New Orleans mixed with Vegas on acid. Lisette (also known as Mirage) is an illusionist with no actual magic, in a magic filled world. She has to play with the big boys who actually DO have magic. She is a bad A woman all on her own, she needs no one. Lisette grew up under the shadow of not only her other brother but her father who was labeled a traitor because he killed the King. Because of his betrayal, this left Lisette without magic. Her one true goal in life is to win the position of Jester to the Queen. How can someone who doesn’t actually possess magic have any chance against someone who does? The further she makes it towards her goal, the more she has to lose. How far will she go? Lisette is then approached with high value information that states her father may actually not have been who killed the King. Is the source of the info reliable? Even if they are, is it actually true? Does that change any way Lisette actually feels towards her father, and her goal?

Jester is a magical fantasy that will transport you. The land is full of magic, but some stipulations to being magical. What is Lisette to do when her father passes before he can hand down his power? I enjoyed this story of a determined young lady. She is dealt a tough hand and has to make her own magic to survive. At times I disliked Lisette and her choices, but this is part of why I enjoyed this story so much. The author gives truly human characteristics to her characters, making them relatable but also unlikable moments. The story is nice and complex but not to the point of being overwhelming. It left me wanting more and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Lisette is a desperate illusionist in a place full of entertainers with real magical abilities, abilities she could have had if her father had not killed the king and been executed for his crimes. Oasis is a city of sin where people come to lose themselves in the lights, the booze, and the entertainment. When Lisette enters a dangerous competition to be chosen as the Queen’s Jester, the highest ranking magical position in the world, her biggest rival is Luc. A man who has all the abilities she has ever wanted. When secrets begin to unfold about the King’s death Lisette will have a big decision to make. Will she redeem her family’s name or snatch at the fame she’s worked so hard for?
What a wonderful debut novel, I was absolutely blown away! The magic and illusions are amazing and the competition is fierce! This book has everything you want from a YA novel and so much more, with wonderful twists and a super satisfying ending! Lisette is a well written and complex protagonist whose determination and desperation you can truly feel, and her rivalry with Luc is so entrancing. Brielle D. Porters’ writing is so magical that I felt like I was in Oasis with all of the unique and fun characters she created. This book truly reminded me why I’ve always loved the YA genre! A must read!!

Jester is a must to read! Oasis a town where people come to be entertained. (It reminds me of Las Vegas.) There are magicians that use real magic or slight of hand. Lisette is in love with being in the spotlight but without the use of magic she has to work twice as hard. The Queen has come to Oasis to select her next Jester. Her biggest competition is Luc, an arrogant and handsome man. She will do anything to become the Queen’s Jester. How far will she go to achieve her dreams?

I absolutely loved Jester by Brielle D. Porter! I couldn’t put the book down! I extremely liked Lisette because of her determination to achieve her dream, which I found relatable. With a speckle of magic, mystery, and suspense this book was able to tell an amazing story and made me feel like I was sitting in the audience watching the show. Lisette grew up under the shadow of a father who was labeled a traitor after killing the king. When he is put to death before he could pass on his magic to Lisette, she feels the loss ten times over because she lives in Oasis- where magic rules. As she perfects sleight of hand that LOOKS like magic, she decides to enter into a competition to compete for the position of Jester to the Queen. However, her biggest competitor, Luc, has REAL magic. Lisette realizes very quickly that she will do anything to gain magic and fame. The farther she makes it, the more she has to lose, though. When she is approached with information concerning the death of the king not being at the hand of her father, everything changes. Can she trust the source of this information? Could it be true? Will the cost of the truth be her undoing?

I really enjoyed reading this story. It follows a girl that wants to be recognized as the best because she feels like she’s never been good enough. In her pursuit of being the best, she begins to make friends in places that she doesn’t expect. In the end, she realizes what is worth keeping and what is worth letting go. Her path isn’t easy, and she doesn’t always pick the right choice, but the ending is perfect!

Jester is a fun dark and twisted tale. Imagine falling down a hole in a city that is more sinful than sin city, outrageously ostentatious, blindingly entertaining and certainly deadly and definitely twisted. This story is unique, fun and entertaining with secrets and lies, magic and corruption, political intrigue and a deadly competition. Add in a romance between enemy to lovers and you have a wild ride.

Lisette wants magic and to win so badly she can taste it. She longs to be the best but what would she do if things turn deadly?

Jester is Brielle’s debut novel and it will be interesting to see what she does next.

Jester by Brielle D. Porter is one of the best books I have read this year- or ever! It is such a fresh, original, and fun story- a fantastic fantasy with a little bit of a darker tone, plenty of mysteriousness, magic, dramatic developments, rivalry, revenge, danger, obsession, illusions, intrigue, interesting complex characters, stellar world-building, murder, politics, agendas, adventure, family dynamics/drama, humour, romance, emotion, and sooo much more.
I am so impressed with this book- even more so when I discovered that it is the author’s debut novel! Way to go to stamp your mark as an author! First time up to the base and Ms. Porter has hit it out of the park!!! If this is what she can do as her debut- I CAN. NOT. WAIT. to see where we will go from here! I am excited to find such a talented author to add to my MUST-READ author list! I can not recommend this book highly enough- if you love well-woven fantasy that provides an immersive experience in the form of a rich, vibrant, and exciting story- then you will definitely want to get your hands on this book- STAT!
I don’t want to go into the story in too much detail, as I really don’t want to spoil it for you. The blurb does a better job of whetting the appetite for what to expect, than I would, without giving too much away. I recommend going into the story a little blind and letting the author and the story surprise you- in the best possible way!
I loved Lisette (Mirage) and Luc… their rivalry really added to the overall feel and excitement of the storyline. I was so invested in them and the outcome of the story that I stayed glued to the pages the whole way through- reading the whole book in one sitting, just so I could find out how everything played out in the end. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE this book. I can’t wait to get my hands on Ms. Porter’s next book- my mind is whirling with possibilities! Ms. Porter is definitely an author to watch out for, as I can see great things in her future!
Must Read! If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would!

Happy Reading!

Thank you, Brielle D. Porter!

Jester was wildly entertaining and exciting to read! Lisette’s tricks were mind blowing even though she does not have magic herself, she does try to do her best. She and her competition Luc do some pretty crazy things trying to one up each other. One has Magic while the other does not. While most of the story is from Lisette’s POV it was nice having some backstory of why her father was executed for his crimes against the crown. This book was written wonderfully and I can’t wait to read more from this author again soon!

This was a fun read full of action and magic. The setting of Oasis with fancy hotels, gambling, shows, street performers, and magic reminded me of Las Vegas. The backstory is that Lisette’s father killed the King and was executed and he did not pass on his magic to her. I liked that the story is told from Lisette’s point of view but there are also chapters written from her father’s point of view which gives his story. Lisette’s goal is to become the next Jester to the Queen and she will do pretty much anything to get there. She doesn’t have magic so her show needs to be amazing. Luc is her biggest competition and enemy who is able to heal himself and always seems to outdo Lisette’s show. As Lisette and Luc get closer to the competition the tricks get more dangerous and they are both out to win. The characters were easy to like and the story was fun, sad, and suspenseful. I hope there will be more books to come.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! This is a completely new author to me and wasn’t sure what I was getting into, but I loved the cover and decided to give it a read. I can’t express my love for this story enough, but I couldn’t put it down. I had Alice in Wonderland in New Orleans or Las Vegas vibes. Lots of intrigue and mystery with magic and secrets galore. I could picture the main character on Bourbon Streets in New Orleans performing her street magic for money. The characters are amazing, the writing is phenomenal, and the world building is truly out of this world. I am really hoping that there is second book in this story because in my opinion there just needs to be. Maybe two or three more. Highly recommended book.

~Fame or Family~

Lisette takes us on a wild ride from beginning to end…from first glance at the cover, to the last drop, you are in for such a treat! Her goal…The Queen’s Jester…can she do it? It depends on if she can get past Luc. Lisette is a feisty female protagonist in a political hot mess. I read some of the other reviews and everyone is spot on with this. -5 Stars- for sure.

I would say this is a romance, because of the way you can get sucked into Lisette’s romance. BUT, to me this reads more as a YA Fantasy overall (which is one of my favorite genres.) There is a Magic, and some practicing of magic. I just love how the world development allows for different characters progressing on their own individual paths. Every great fantasy novel does a good job developing the magical undercurrent that all the characters rely on, and the author sure doesn’t disappoint.

As Lisette’s own story unfolds, she goes through abandonment, deciphering between right or wrong (her own moral compass), and all the twists and turns that are involved all along the way. Her world is enchanting, fun, competitive, and a romance that is “enemies to lovers” if you’re into that.
I would absolutely jump on picking up the story again, and can’t wait to read book 2. Thank you for this book!!!

Lisette lost her magic when her father was executed for killing the King. The sparks arise between these two as does some new evidence against the Queen that shows she may have been the one to murder the King. I love the passion and suspense in the story. The back and forth. The characters are so well-developed. The plot ran smooth with some twists in it. This is a story that will have you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what happened next. Just wow! This book was so freaking good. The story was artistic in its own special way, and held me as I read, I could not get enough of this book and what it has to offer. The story not only provided much intrigue, but a lot of realism and a world that was magical on it own to imagine!

Loved this story and the characters that it contained. I saw a lot of character development as well. Especially with Lisette. I found she really grew through the story, She was a very admirable character as well. Whom she started as, and what by the end of the book, she finished as, was rather remarkable. I loved the plot, and all it contained. The story was a quick read for me, as I could not put it down, it held me and I kept needing more answers to my questions and to keep on reading! It was just soo good! I loved this book so much!

I really enjoyed this fantasy adventure. It is a fast paced story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It’s a story full of different aspects such as revenge and redemption. There is also a enemy to lovers romance which at first you don’t expect. The main character Lisette is very strong willed and determined to succeed, however sometimes her plans to do that could be seen as questionable.

Lisette has been left on her own since her father was executed for murdering the king. Now she has to struggle through life trying to get out from the disgrace her father caused by commiting that crime. Lisette’s dream is to become the Jester however this will be no easy feat considering she doesn’t have any real magic. When she enters into the challenge to become the Queens Jester its a highly dangerous thing to do and when her worst enemy Luc also joins the challenge things just get worse for her. After all Luc has what she doesn’t. Luc has real magic not an illusion like Lisette.
As the challenge progresses Lisette sees evidence go show the Queens involvement in her husbands death.
Was Lisette dad really to blame for the Kings murder? Now Lisette has a choice. Does she strive to clear her family name and lose her dream or does she live under the disgrace of her fathers supposed crime and fulfil her dream of being Queens Jester? Is that even an option with Luc in the competition?
