Lisette is a desperate illusionist in a place full of entertainers with real magical abilities, abilities she could have had if her father had not killed the king and been executed for his crimes. Oasis is a city of sin where people come to lose themselves in the lights, the booze, and the entertainment. When Lisette enters a dangerous competition to be chosen as the Queen’s Jester, the highest ranking magical position in the world, her biggest rival is Luc. A man who has all the abilities she has ever wanted. When secrets begin to unfold about the King’s death Lisette will have a big decision to make. Will she redeem her family’s name or snatch at the fame she’s worked so hard for?
What a wonderful debut novel, I was absolutely blown away! The magic and illusions are amazing and the competition is fierce! This book has everything you want from a YA novel and so much more, with wonderful twists and a super satisfying ending! Lisette is a well written and complex protagonist whose determination and desperation you can truly feel, and her rivalry with Luc is so entrancing. Brielle D. Porters’ writing is so magical that I felt like I was in Oasis with all of the unique and fun characters she created. This book truly reminded me why I’ve always loved the YA genre! A must read!!
