She is ready to start a new life and possibly find love again so she attends a ball. While at the ball she meets William who is much younger than her and they become lovers. William is the future Earl so as time passes and they begin to have feelings for one another his father tries everything he can to break them up. Society is also hard on them because they are not the typical couple, she is older than him and a widow. He is young and sought after but he knows what makes him happy and its Charlotte. This is such a fun book!

Charlotte’s Control took me by complete surprise! Not having read anything by Maggie Sims previously, I wasn’t sure what to expect. This historical romance is centered around William and Charlotte and has just the right amount of spice! Set in a time where women had very little control over their own lives, Charlotte shows William how freeing relinquishing control to another can actually be. Their relationship is so much more than physical. Despite their age difference, William and Charlotte exchange ideas, have intelligent discussions, and revel in the other’s company. There is so much more emotion in this book than I was expecting. Maggie Sims’s characters are so unique and realistic while the world building made me feel like I was riding along in the carriage with them, attending balls, and helping manage the estates. What a great, unexpected read by a “new-to-me” author I can’t wait to read more from.

William Stanton was hoping he would not have to attend formal society events until he was finished with school in Oxford. William was trying to make connections with people to rebuild his estate since he was the heir to the Earl of Harrington. His father had left the estate in disrepair and was constantly squandering their money through his drunken, bad investments. He was with his cousin, Percy, and his friend Luke “South” Lynwood when he noticed a woman sitting alone in a plum dress. They made eye contact, and he asked Percy and South if they knew who she was. They didn’t know her, but when Wiliam looks in the same direction again, she is no longer there.

Charlotte was the widow of Charles Peterborough, which made her the Dowager Countess since her brother-in-law, Edward, had married Sophia. Edward was kind enough to give her the house in London. However, Sophia had taken over managing the rest of the estate, which left Charlotte with a lot of time. She was good at investing and had a sizeable fortune. She laments that she is too old to be a debutante, yet she is too old to be a matron since she has no children. Her best friend, Isabelle, advises Charlotte to attend her friend’s ball and see if the man is there. The sultry courtesan tells Charlotte to ignore society’s opinion and to start living again. Evan “Cheltie” was the Earl of Cheltenhelm and had been friends with Charlotte and Charlie.

While at Cheltie’s party, he introduces William to Charlotte as the Countess of Peterborough. Mistaking her for the wife of the Earl, William introduces himself and states that his mother had requested that he speak to her husband. Insulted, Charlotte tells William that her husband died two years prior, and she did not find him funny. She runs from the party into the garden to compose herself. She realizes that she had been harsh to the young man because of Cheltie’s faux pas. William follows her, ignoring propriety, and apologizes to her. When he attempts to touch her hand, Charlotte tells him to remove his cravat and ties his hands. She intentionally makes sure he has a full view of her cleavage before telling him he is to call her Mistress P, and then leaves him and the ball. Shocked, William has to see the beguiling woman again.

Maggie Sims introduces the world of domination and submission in Charlotte’s Control. She tastefully sets the multiple “sessions” in detail that build the tension between the 19-year-old heir and the 28-year-old widow. Charlotte’s boundaries and time limit do little to dissuade Wiiliam from pursuing her in secret. When he followed his tip of climbing a trellis to see Charlotte, I had to laugh. His friend, Nate, had told him about what women’s romance novels involved; he didn’t realize William took him literally.

Sims shows how society views older women who marry younger men. I was able to relate to Charlotte, as I am 9 years older than my significant other. William’s disregard for the age difference is identical to how my husband views it; it is insignificant. She conveys the perspective that the age difference shouldn’t matter, within reason, since if the man were older, nobody would care. The double standards are made apparent throughout the book.

Charlotte’s Control will appeal to fans of forbidden romance novels with alternating views of the protagonists. Isabelle’s advice and William’s desperate letters to Charlotte add depth to this intriguing tale. The steamy scenes make this book appropriate for adult readers, and the details make it easy to envision the encounters. The plot is unpredictable, with engaging conversations outside the bedroom scenes. The first book in the Control series deserves five stars, and I am eager to read the sequels.

I really enjoyed this book! Historical Romance is my all-time favourite genre to read and the author absolutely got this book spot on. I loved that it was a little bit different to other historical romances I’ve read with the reverse age gap but I absolutely loved the characters Charlotte and William. There was so much sexual chemistry between the two of them and it felt so real and genuine. The story was really well written and the characters well developed. The authors descriptive language was great, it really enabled me to imagine what I was reading at times. Although there is a BDSM undertone to the story it isn’t over bearing and not the main theme of the book.
Overall I really loved this book and can’t wait to read more from this author again in the future.

Charlotte’s Control (The Control Series) by Maggie Sims Review by Heidi Woodring

Charlottes Control by Maggie Sims is a wonderfully written age gap that I could not put down. I found that the story line was well written in a book filled with BDSM, power play, romance, and so much more. Charlotte is the older in the book, which is something I have not read much of, so it made it that more a good read to me. Willaim is an amazing character that truly grabbed at me as soon as I opened the book. There is something about him that I don’t think I will forget anything soon, there is a sweetness about him that is enduring.
I have never read anything by this author but it won’t be the last. I love the steamy side but I also like the character building the author gave us. I highly recommend this book!!!

William Stanton, heir to the Earl of Harrington, has his plate full. His final year at Oxford, taking care of his family’s estate and cleaning up for his drunken father. Yet, how could he not fall for attracted to the young beauty Charlotte, Dowager Countess of Peterborough. Only William didn’t know that Charlotte was a Dowager. Charlotte who is a decade older than William and a widow, what could she offer William? As an Earl William would need heirs to carry on the bloodline and Charlotte was not sure she could provide for him. So she promised herself that she would give up the Earl. Even if that meant her own heartbreak. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I am in love. This book encompassed all things I like, colonial time, love, and soft bondage. It’s a fantastic book.

I enjoy a well written historical romance, and this is one in which the author has done an amazing job. I wasn’t sure I would connect with the age-gap romance but it felt so effortless. I was pulled into the book immediately and engaged with the characters straight away. I loved their instant connection and how it evolved as the book went on.
The story matched the characters perfectly as well. It is the kind of book that I couldn’t put down because I wanted to see what would happen next. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I am definitely impressed with what I have seen so far. I am looking forward to reading the next book.

Not sure that she’s ready to jump back into the single area (even being a widow), Charlotte winds up with a “rake,” . She’s a bit more contemporary then times allow as it seems her dead husband taught her things to help her provide. The story is good. The characters are fairly well-written. It’s a bit steamy. It you are into historical romance, this may be just right for you.

Charlotte’s Control is the first book in The Control series by Maggie Sims. This is an historical romance with a reverse age gap, femdom, chemistry, sizzle, tension, tender romantic scenes, fate, societal norms/customs of the time, insta-lust, love letter/lust letter exchanges, agendas, passion, drama, angst, challenges, and emotion.
Charlotte never imagined being a widow at the age of 30, but there she is alone in an age where responsibility and societal expectations seem quite daunting. When fate intervenes and she crosses paths with the very young and charming William- things take a bit of an unexpected and steamy turn. What ensues made for a great read.
Looking forward to continuing the series.
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Maggie Sims!

I enjoyed reading this historical romance story. I enjoyed how the author used details to make her story as well as her characters come to life. I enjoyed being pulled into the story from the beginning. The author’s attention to details made the story realistic and entertaining to read. This is a well written story about Charlotte and William. Charlotte finds herself not young enough and almost too old to marry. William is supposed to marry a young debutante until he meets a lonely widow who could change everything. Will they defy society to have a happy ever after? I enjoyed watching the growth of these two characters. They add so much to the story which makes it easy to read. They are strong, connectable characters with great chemistry and attraction. This is a fast paced story that you won’t soon forget. A hard to put down story that I highly recommend

Charlotte’s Control is the first book in The Control Series. This is a Historical Romance that I absolutely loved reading . I’m a huge fan of this author and Historical Romance. She did a wonderful job creating amazing characters that make the story come to life. I could picture myself right along with them. Her attention to detail made it pop. This is definitely my favorite yet. This is an age gap romance and its William and Charlotte’s story. She’s a widow and likes to be in control especially in the bedroom. William is a bit younger but you wouldn’t know has he still carries the weight of his father’s transgressions. These two my goodness are so good together. I don’t want to give to much away. I’m going to highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next with William and Charlotte. It’s worth the read I promise.. I’m looking forward to reading more from this Author.

Charlotte’s Control is the first time I am reading anything by Maggie Sims. It is the first book in her new Control series.
It is a reverse age gap historical romance that is really well written. I can take or leave historical romance but Maggies’ writing style drew me in and I found myself really enjoying it. There is a touch of humour, angst, tension, want, need, doubt, caring, and so much more.
There is a cast of many characters, in the beginning which was a bit much to remember them all. But it is so easy to fall in love with William and Charlotte.
There is a little BDSM with a dominant widow on the cusp of being on the edge of society. William is a submissive young man forced to take over the running of things due to his alcoholic father. The sexual tension between the two main characters is steamy, hot, and sexy and everything explosive but it is also very romantic, sensual, and tender.
If you love a story of two souls finding each other wrapped up in a historical romance, then Charlotte’s Control is for you.

Maggie Sims began her love affair with romance before her teen years, drawn to the Regency by her mum’s British influence. In her twenties, she did her best to live the Carrie Bradshaw life in New York City, albeit with less expensive shoes and more books.

Despite reading hundreds of romance novels in her life, she was still blown away when she met the love of her life, an ex-Marine cinnamon roll with creative woodworking and culinary skills.

Having retired from corporate life, they live in Central Texas and are parents to a varying number of dogs and cats.  When not writing, Maggie is a wine enthusiast, a travel junkie, and a romance reading fiend.  She also sporadically crochets for KnotsofLove.org and does just enough exercise for that second glass of wine at night.
