Swindler’s Revenge (Karina Cardinal Mysteries Book 5) by Ellen Butler – Review by Tracy Wilkin

Swindler's RevengeSwindler’s Revenge by Ellen Butler
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Swindler’s Revenge is book five in the Karina Cardinal Mysteries by Ellen Butler. A new to me author, this story was a great way to sink my teeth into Ellen Butler’s work. I was cackling away from the very first chapter. The engagement with Karina was instant. This rebel has an agenda and it’s not just to solve a mystery. This character is constantly busy and drama is ever present at ever chapter. Karina’s quick wit is enviable, her personality larger than life, and the author’s portrayal of each character encouraging.

If you are wanting excitement, energy, suspense, romance and constant activity, then this story is for you. I certainly enjoyed every word, and will be going to read the rest of the books I have to get caught up on all that is crazy enthralling Karina. 4 stars.

Swindler’s Revenge (Karina Cardinal Mysteries Book 5) by Ellen Butler – Review by Char Wahtomy-Alba

This is the first book I have read by this author and it was a great first book. I realized after I was a few pages in that it went to a series, but I didn’t feel like I had missed out on a lot. It does make me want to go back and read the other adventures from the first book.

In Swindler’s Revenge Karina Cardinal has her Saturday morning interrupted by the FBI. They are looking for her ex boyfriend Mike Finnegan as he supposedly took a $1.2 million bribe. She doesn’t believe he would do something like that, but the FBI believes they have the right man. Mike believes he was framed and thinks he knows who is behind it, but how can he prove he didn’t do what he is accused of? Karina believes that Mike is genuinely a good guy and jumps in feet first to help him out of this jam. How much danger is she putting herself in to help out a friend?

This is the fifth book in the Karina Cardinal Mystery series. It can stand alone, but I am going to go back and read the first four books. I fell in love with Karina!! Her outrageous plans, her determination, the way the people around her trust her is just amazing and well written.
Karina falls into a mess when her ex is though to have embezzled 1.2 million dollars and taken off with it. The FBI show up to her door she is antagonistic with them, but they continue searching her house. She knows Mike didn’t do this, but who did? Who can she go to help Mike? Can she completely trust them with this delicate issue? The people she does trust, can they find all the information before time runs out?
I couldn’t stop turning the pages. What was going to happen next? What bright dangerous idea was going to come out of Karina’s mouth next. She had me laughing, loving, fearing for their safety. I just did the emotional Olympics. THANK YOU, ELLEN BUTLER!!!!

Family Secrets (A Whispering Pines Mystery) by Shawn McGuire – Review bye Shelly Kittell

Family Secrets (Whispering Pines Mystery #1)Family Secrets by Shawn McGuire
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Family Secrets (Book 1 of The Whispering Pines Mystery) is an amazing mystery. From the first page, I am drawn as Jayne is traveling to Whispering Pines, Wisconsin, to clear out her Grandmother’s house. Little did she know, she would be entering into a town full of drama and secrets. Oh boy, the action is basically wherever she turns. There’s a dead body in her grandmother’s yard to a break-in. She meets a handsome guy, Tripp, who basically tells her the town doesn’t like outsiders. She’s treated like royalty because she’s the Original’s granddaughter. Jayne sees the attitudes of the town and it makes her mad that they treat Tripp this way. I can’t share anymore. You have to read this. It’s so thrilling and full of twists and turns and suspense. The character’s are incredible. Honey and Sugar running a sweet bakery. It fits so great. The towns people make me think of the weird people I have met in Boulder. They just fit the characteristics so well; weird and hippy chic with a hint of spooky. So worth the read, I can’t wait to dig into the rest of the series. I love Jayne and Meeka. Highly recommend.

Family Secrets (Whispering Pines Mystery #1)Family Secrets by Shawn McGuire
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Family Secrets is the first book in the Whispering Pine Mystery series by Shawn McGuire. This is my first time reading anything by this author, but she has won me over already.

Whispering Pines sounds like something out of a fairytale. Jayne arrives back there after 16 years away. She has returned to sort out her grandparents’ property but gets so much more than she bargained for when she discovers a dead body in the garden. She shouldn’t get involved, but once a cop always a cop!
I am already a huge fan of the cosy mystery genre, and the book didn’t disappoint. It has enough mystery and suspense to keep you turning the pages, but it’s also a really easy read. There are quite a few loose ends and unanswered questions, but I’m guessing we’ll get more answers in book 2!

Ellen Butler has done it again. Swindler’s Revenge is a masterfully written cozy mystery. I enjoy the picture Ellen Butler describes because it is vivid. There are so many twists and turns, edge of my seat moments that kept me reading until I was done with the last word. The characters are fully developed and relatable. In particular, I love Karina as a character. She is one of my favorite characters. In this book, she is involved with a case that she personally knows and it happens to be Mike. She jumped into this investigation without regard to her own safety. She gets into the investigation pretty far. Can she find Mike or is the danger too great? I highly recommend this book and the other books in the Karina Cardinal Mystery series

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the fifth book in A Backyard Farming Series, but the first one I have read. I did not feel as if I was missing anything by jumping feet first into this book.
Anne helps town residents create beautiful gardens, but things take a turn when she finds Billie underneath a bookshelf deceased. Anne’s gut tells her this was not an accident as first thought. I am not normally very oblivious to clues in a mystery, apparently my brain doesn’t quite work that way. I was very excited that I was able to follow some of the clues in this book. Who in the garden club has the most to gain? Or lose? This was a well written story, I really enjoyed it.

Potager Plot is book #5 in the Backyard Farming Series by Vikki Walton. For me it was the first book I have read by this Author and I really enjoyed it. Not having read the previous 4 books did not diminish my enjoyment of this book but I definitely will be going right back to the beginning to better follow this wonderful series. I also loved that while this is a mystery it is not dark, it is quite light hearted.

Anne is a very charismatic, likable character with a knack for mysteries. When she finds the Garden Clubs President dead in her home the circumstances just don’t sit well with her. Suspicions grow within her as she looks into the comings and goings of various people in the life of Billie. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you captivated as you follow Anne as she tries to solve this mystery.
Come on grab yourself a copy of Potager Plot and join Anne and the wonderful people of Carolan Springs…you won’t regret it!!

Swindler's RevengeSwindler’s Revenge by Ellen Butler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Swindler’s Revenge by Ellen Butler is the fifth book in the Karina Cardinal series. First, I recommend reading the series to know Karina’s past escapades and the other characters that recur in the series. Karina seems to have things under control until the FBI shows up at her door looking for her ex, Mike Finnegan. Could Mike not be the upright FBI agent Karina thought he was? This story is a great addition to the series. I like that Karina finds herself in crazy situations but still finds her way through with the help of some talented individuals. I also like that this isn’t so intense and serious that it overwhelms the reader. The story has intensity but a nice amount of humor and a smidge of romance. I look forward to reading more in this series and from this author in the future.

Family Secrets: A Whispering Pines Mystery by Shawn McGuire was a great mystery book! I love the author’s creativity in the writing. It had me hooked from the beginning and I was quickly turning pages to find out what happened next. The plot was very well written. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and “seeing” their interactions. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series. The book does end on a cliffhanger, but that isn’t the reason I’m excited to read the rest of the series. Regardless of how it ends, I would have read the rest of the series because I am excited to see what else happens!

I enjoyed this suspenseful mystery story. This is a new author for me which I look forward to seeing what is next for them as well as the next book in this series. I found this book to be fast paced and full of action. The twists and turns had me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what was lurking in the shadows. This is a well written story about Jane and what happens when she goes to her grandparents lake house. The story picks up when her dog finds a dead body in the backyard and the sheriff has no interest in finding out who did it. I really enjoyed what the characters brought to the story. Their growth as well as the plot throughout the story is great. I enjoyed how the characters pulled me into the story as well as kept the story engaging. Jane is a great character that truly made the story easy and entertaining to read. I highly recommend this book.

“Family Secrets (Whispering Pines Mystery #1)” written by Shawn McGuire, was a book I couldn’t put down! Set in a small town in Wisconsin, former detective Jayne travels to her late grandparent’s lake house to settle their affairs. As she arrives, her police-trained dog finds a dead body in the yard. Her training has taught her how to handle the situation, and she gives report to the sheriff. Jayne is surprised that the local police do not seem to be worried about the death, and their suspicious behavior leads her to begin investigating on her own. As she investigates the potential murder, she begins to uncover many secrets about her own family, as well as secrets in the village of Whispering Pines.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the characters, and the small town setting! I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Swindler's RevengeSwindler’s Revenge by Ellen Butler
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Having never read a Karina Cardinal mystery or any other book by Ellen Butler, Swindler’s Revenge was a fantastic book. As a civilian, Karina really shouldn’t involve herself in dangerous things. Having been involved in multiple cases which involved getting out of trouble with or without the help of friends, Karina is the to jump in headfirst.

On a perfectly peaceful Saturday, Karina’s lazy morning is interrupted by a knock on the door and the FBI and IRS invading her personal space. It seems her once boyfriend, FBI agent Michael Finnegan is wanted for suspicion of taking a bribe. A $1.2 million bribe? Karina isn’t buying it and soon finds herself under the surveillance of the FBI.

Shortly after, Karina’s commute is interrupted by a cell phone ringing that isn’t hers. She finds the suspicious phone in her pocket and immediately knows that it is Mike. With Mike’s confirmation, Karina knows that Mike is being framed by someone only he doesn’t know who. He wants her help.

With the help of her friends at Silverthorne Security, she finds a hideout for Mike while the team tries to uncover the person responsible for framing Mike. Once again, Karina finds herself deep in an investigation. Will they be able to stop the person framing Mike before it’s too late? And will Karina stay out of harm’s way throughout the investigation?

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As a fan of the ‘Karina Cardinal Mysteries’ series I was looking forward to catching up with the heroine, who feels like an old friend, Karina Cardinal and as usual I was not disappointed. Book five in the series and each one really does get better. Having split up with Mike a few months ago Karina is surprised when the FBI start banging on her door hunting for a fugitive by the name of Mike Finnegan! Despite the damning evidence they claim to have Karina just can’t see Mike taking a 1.2 million bribe and so when a burner phone appears in her pocket, she’s not surprised to hear Mikes voice on the other end. Mike needs Karina’s help to find out who’s framing him and why, as he is deep under cover. Unfortunately this puts Karina in danger especially when an old enemy turns up, but as usual Karina ignores the dangers in order to solve the mystery and prove Mike’s innocence. A fast paced exciting storyline with plenty of plot twists, this story had me gripped from page one. Karina is a great strong female main character who really brings the stories together. I was up late reading this book as I just couldn’t put it down, a must read novel and I also recommend the series.

Swindler’s Revenge by Ellen Butler is the fifth book in the Karina Cardinal Mysteries series and the first one that I have read. Even though I was able to read this as a standalone I feel you would get a better understanding for the characters if the series was read in order.

When Karina’s Saturday was disturbed by agents looking for her ex boyfriend she is shocked to discover he is wanted in connection of taking $1.2 million from his work. Now he’s gone missing.

Karina doesn’t believe it was him as its so out of character so she is now on a mission to find him before the agents do and unravel this case. Who is trying to set him up? Is he being set up or blackmailed? And what secrets and dangers will Karina find herself caught in trying to solve this case.

Swindler’s Revenge is the fifth book in the Karina Cardinal Mystery series by Ellen Butler. Yes, I am going to say this again for the umpteenth time- this series just gets better and better with each new instalment- and I’ve found another book to add to my favourites in this fantastic series- that’s all five 😊!!!
Ms. Butler really knows how to spin a riveting, tightly woven story that kept me flipping the pages to discover what I would find on the next page. She deftly weaves clever mystery, suspense, and thrills into her plots- it’s something she does incredibly well. I love that her stories always keep me wondering what will happen next- and has me expecting danger and dramatic developments with every turn of the page. Her books are a definite ‘one-click’-no-questions-asked…. she never disappoints!!!
As with the other books in the series, this could be read as a standalone- without feeling like you are missing anything. But having said that, I really do recommend reading the previous instalments before devouring this one, as not only are the previous books really great stories- but there are also some recurring characters who appear in each instalment, as well a few references to past events and characters- so knowing what has happened previously will definitely enhance your reading experience of this book, and the series as a whole.
Karina Cardinal (K.C) seems to be a bit of a magnet for trouble, and true to form, she soon finds herself embroiled in another investigation. This time, Michael Finnegan, her ex-boyfriend, becomes a wanted fugitive after taking off with $1.2 million dollars. This also puts KC under the FBI microscope as his (former) girlfriend. Could Michael really have pulled a swiftie? Karina doesn’t think so- but proving it may not be quite that simple, especially since there is no trace of Michael. But, with a little help from some very capable friends- they begin to unravel the events that led up to Michael’s disappearance with the loot….. as the investigation unfolds we are treated to plenty of tense situations, clever mystery, intrigue, suspense, agendas, danger, drama, chemistry, emotion, set ups, colourful characters, comradery, humour, banter, and much more! OH, and did I mention I FLOVE the direction KC’s love life has taken- that’s all I can say without giving away spoilers! But- SQUEEEEEE!!!!! Colour me happy. I have been wanting this for quite a while now- and it finally happened!!! WOOT!!!
Now I can’t wait for more Karina Cardinal mysteries!!! Bring on Book #6 (Dear Lord, let there be more books coming)!!!

Thank you, Ellen Butler!

We’re still with Tyler in this third installment of a series I’ve grown to love. As an advocate for mental illness in real life (outside of being a reader), I was heartbroken at how they stigmatized Tyler. My heart also goes out to Hen as he’s dealing with a lot on his own as well: This book is what I call refreshingly honest. From that perspective, I dove right in and was gripped with all of this story and never looked back. I love this book so much I keep re-reading. Pick it up and enjoy!

The Karina Cardinal Mysteries
Book 5
By Ellen Butler
☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
This is another story in the Karina Cardinal Mysteries. While this series could be read as standalones I recommend you read this series in order.
Karina Cardinal is at it again. This time it’s her ex boyfriend that is in trouble with the FBI. So she sets out to find the answers as well as the truth. Although jumping with both feet is never a good idea. She goes for it. Ex meaning she and Mike broke up months ago. That does not mean she does not care. Something is not right, she knows Mike would never take the money and disappear like this. So will Karina again save the day? Is Mike really who they say he is?

Ellen Butler has once again knocked the ball out of the park. This story is well written and a true laugh out loud mystery. But you know it has some of those heart stopping moments. I love the characters all with their own challenges. Karina makes this story run, but nothing better than helping an ex in trouble. I could not put this one down, I just had to finish as it was that captivating. Ellen Butler, you have once again given us the right feels! Well Done Ellen Butler! Well Done! !

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo, this is the last book in the series. Swindler’s Revenge by Ellen Butler is another superb story. Karina Cardinal and the gang are back, and I just love them. Although they are standalone stories make sure you start at the being and fully immerse yourself in all things Karina Cardinal. This series just gets better and better with each book. This unpredictable thrilling ride will have you laughing out loud and holding your breath at the same time. Ellen is the master of mystery, and this series is just proof of that. You never know where the story will go and what is going to happen next.
As is her style Karina finds herself in trouble whether she means to or not. However, in this case things go from bad to worse as she tries to solve the mystery of why her ex is being framed for a crime, she knows he would not have committed.
As always, a brilliant tale. Keep them coming.
