Hero High: Figure In The Flames by Mina Chara – Review by Meg Tyrrell

Figure in the Flames (Hero High, #1-3)Figure in the Flames by Mina Chara
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Figure in the Flames is a collection of books 1-3 in the Hero High Series by Mina Chara. Having all 3 books in a box set was a great idea- each time I finished a book, I was scrambling for the next. This series introduces Friday Fitzsimmons and her super power. She needs to learn how to use her power and when. Leaning on friends is a good thing, until it’s not. Who will be in Friday’s corner? Trust me this is a great read if you like the super power genre. It is a YA book, but the way Mina writes, makes it for any age!

5-Stars

Hero High: Figure In The Flames by Mina Chara was an exciting and fun read. The storyline easily caught my attention and I burned through this book in a heartbeat. The characters were fun and creative with unique powers and abilities. Friday was special and her power was passive. Her personality and subtle love interest kept me hooked. I loved the ending even if it was a bit of an emotional thing. Such a wonderful read. I highly recommend it!

Figure in the Flames (Hero High, #1-3)Figure in the Flames by Mina Chara
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Figure in the Flames is a collection of books 1-3 in the Hero High Series by Mina Chara. I love that she made it into a boxset, because the books are cliffhangers, and I believe, should be all 1 book. Its 3 parts to the same story. I highly recommend this series, I’ve really enjoyed it. This is the first time reading this author, but I look forward to more. When I first started the series, I thought it was going to be cheesy because of the names of the city and characters. They were not very original, using names like Super Structure, Hero High, and Captain Fantastic. Despite that, I am glad I stuck out the story because I ended up loving it. The writing style is very descriptive and you feel like you’re right there alongside the characters. It seems like The Incredibles meets XMen.
The series starts out with Denial, which follows 17 year old Friday, who has super powers. She is shipped off to Hero High, which is a school for those with powers, but doubles as a reality show. They are followed by cameras, and merchandise is made to look like them and sold in the malls. These super kids are assigned a team and a mentor, have their wardrobes picked for them, the whole nine yards. They are constantly being filmed, dressed up for photo shoots and whisked off to PR events. Friday is trying to stay in the shadows, but keeps finding herself in the spotlight.
The next book is Anger, and it picks up right where Denial left off. This book is very short, and I read it in 1 night. This story continues telling us of Friday’s life at Hero High. There isn’t a lot I can tell you without possible spoiler alerts. Friday comes in contact with the new Dr. Dangerous again, and things escalate quickly. She is still looking up to her mentor Sense. And the weird love/hate relationship between Friday and Ashley continues.
Bargaining is book 3 was my favorite of the three. There is so much going on in this book! So many shocks and surprises, action packed. Friday wanted to stay in the background, but since day 1 has been up front and center. She feels like everything is going wrong. She keeps fighting with her best friend, and handler, Jake. Dr Dangerous, a superhero who is supposed to be dead, seems to have resurfaced (or a copycat) and has a fixation on her. And there is a man in flames that keeps showing up and causing trouble. There are so many shockers in this story, I don’t want to give anything away. I highly recommend and cannot wait to see what happens next.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I found myself enjoying these books, even though it is a genre I don’t usually read. Friday is attending Hero High which simultaneously films a reality TV show. While her superpower isn’t one of the big flashy ones, she needs to find a way to make the producers (and audience) notice her and want her to be in a better grouping. While navigating the school aspect, she also has personal relationship drama with her best friend, new relationships to build with her mentor and other students, and a mysterious figure in the flames which keeps making appearances in her life.
This is definitely young adult…but it was a nice break from some of the other heavy stuff I read. I was pulled into the futuristic world and added drama of the reality tv show (like Big Brother). The series is not over…so I will be waiting to see what happens next.

I have loved each of these books individually and found the story to develop beautifully over the course of the series. Friday is a great main character. This is not your ordinary superhero tale. Once you start book one, you will want to read the rest. This box set is a must read. Look forward to reading more from this author.

Hero High: Figure in the Flames contains the first three books in the Hero High series by Mina Chara. This is a Young Adult fantasy adventure story set in a ‘superhero’ high school- full of action, adventure, friendship, coming of age, danger, discovery, superheros, super-villains, reality TV, fame, responsibility, angst, and a little romance. The story set in a near future world, Icon City, and follows Friday Fitzsimmons on an incredible adventure.
When 17 year old Friday develops ‘powers’ she is sent to Hero High, where reality TV and superhero high school collide- and where Friday’s adventures begin. Get set for things to get interesting…..

This is an amazing set of books. I loved reading each one. The author does an amazing job of pulling you into each story and I didn’t want to put them down. The stories are fast-paced and entertaining. I loved reading about the character of Friday Fitzsimmons. She and others are part of a reality TV channel where good fights evil. I enjoyed reading about the interactions/bantering between many of the characters that interact with Friday. Then there are those whose motives are in question, such as the man who calls himself The Figure in The Flames. The author also does a wonderful job of world-building and keeping the stories interesting. There are twists that I didn’t see coming and I found myself turning pages to see what happens next. The stories include action, danger, and even a bit of romance. Don’t miss out on the exciting and addictive stories in this box set. I highly recommend them.

This is a boxset of the first three books in the Hero High series. It is a young adult series that brings you into a world of the supernatural. Friday is a girl that is supernaturally gifted and she trains at a special university. This boxset will take her through adventures that involve romance, she needs to figure out who she is and she needs to prove herself. The characters are really strong and make the story engaging. I had no problem connecting to them as well as they had me turning pages fast to the end. I highly recommend reading this boxset to find out what happens with Friday.

One in a Thousand People on Planet Earth Have Supernatural Powers.

Friday Fitzsimmons is just trying to keep her family business afloat when she discovers a dormant power she didn’t even know she possessed.

Forced to train at a school for the supernaturally gifted, she’s thrust into the glamour of Icon City, a haven for those with powers. The citizens tune in every day to watch their own reality TV channel where good fights evil for the city’s soul.

Friday, like hundreds of other “gifted” students, takes part in the show, but not everyone choses to use their powers for good, like the mysterious masked boy Friday keeps seeing, or the man on fire who calls himself The Figure In The Flames.

Struggling to support her family while coming to terms with her own guilt, Friday finally falls in love, but as events unravel she is forced to question her heart more than once. This may just be her chance to prove herself, but it’s not that simple.

Denial (Hero High Book 1)Denial by Mina Chara
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the first book I have read from this author and I am now hooked. This is the first book from the Hero High series and what a perfect start to a series. I was excited when I started this book. I stopped everything and started to read it immediately. I could not put this book down until the end. These characters hooked me into their story and I can’t wait to read more.

Friday is like your normal seventeen year old. She had friends and family but when her dad finds out she has a super power he ships her to a special school. Friday is shipped to the number one hero school, Hero High. She is now in a more structured environment that she doesn’t like. Friday also has to be filmed everyday but at least she has her best friend by her side. She is surprised when she finds out what it takes to be a superhero. Friday doesn’t have the time because this man that is on fire is making trouble and Friday needs to find out why. Will Friday fit into her new school or will she be the outcast?

This novel by Mina Chara was really good. Today, Superheroes are a really big deal. Maybe they have always been a big deal, just ask any young boy with a comic book collection. What made this book interesting was the fact that it is a book about superheroes just starting out. They are all young and new to their superhero attributes. Mina Chara included in her story some adventure and suspens which made for a very interesting read. I look forward to continuing the adventure in the next installment of Mina Chara’s series.

Denial (Hero High Book 1) by Mina Chara was a great quick read. The pacing is fast and the introductions done quickly. I pictured the story as a comic book while I was reading and enjoyed it tremendously. I think this is a great young adult read and opens a few doors to have discussions with your kids if they read it. My son is too young but I am trying early on to turn him into a reader so I can understand how his brain works. I loved the setting, the characters, and the plots presented. Mina Chara is a new author for me. This was a relatively short book, 3 chapters is all- but so full of information without being info overload. I honestly can’t wait to see what happens next. This book is about Friday Fitzsimmons and her beginning at Hero High. Throughout the book you meet new people who influence her in both positive and negative ways.Friday leaves her home, basically kicked out by her father, to get money for her family. She’s always wanted to be a hero, even if she doesn’t think her power is very good. It’s a quick read but very detailed. I enjoyed this and can’t wait for the next installment. There are so many different questions that she left open ended, I have no doubt the next books will be just as amazing.

Hero High Denial is the first book I’ve read by Mina Chara and it didn’t disappoint, young adults will love this book. The descriptions and scene mapping were so detailed which always helps me be able to see the story rather than just follow it so I really loved that quality. The first page had me interested in the story plot and I just couldn’t wait to see where the it went and how the characters would progress in Hero High. This is a new world and new age of superheroes to explore and fall in love with, anyone who enjoys the young adult genre will find this book satisfying. Now I can’t wait to read book 2….

Denial (Hero High Book 1)Denial by Mina Chara
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Denial is book 1 of the Hero High series and is set in the near future world of Icon City which is a haven for ‘powered one-percenters’. The story centres around seventeen year old Friday who is in her first year at Hero High, a famous school for people with powers. She has to live within the super structure and she has cameras following her around all the time. The school has very high expectations of its powered pupils but thankfully Friday has best friend Jake with her to help her settle in. Although this is a short story it packs a lot in and is a great start to the Hero High series. It has a fast paced storyline and the world building is well done, as I felt immersed in Icon City. I liked the main characters, Friday and Jake, and all the secondary characters were fascinating too and I look forward to them getting their own stories during the series.

This story was fast moving full of action. It is in the genre of YA but do not let that sway you away from this book. It is full of people with special powers. It takes place in Icon City, a have for powered one-percenters. How could you go wrong? You are among people who have special abilities like you. There are some different people who seem to be annoying. Will she ( the main character) figure out what is going on? Can her and Jake(best friend) survive this new school? I recommend this story to find out this and other amazing details.

Denial is the first book in the Hero High series written by Mina Chara and it’s the first book that I have read by this author. This is a fast-paced story that takes you to a school where powered people live and train. The main character Friday seems to follow her own drum and is finding out that strange things are happening around her. The secondary characters and the main character are interesting, and I enjoyed the interactions and their quirks.

Friday’s father finds out she has powers, so he sends her to the most famous school for powered people in the world, Hero High. Now she has to live at the Super Structure, and let cameras follow her round every day. She never knew how many expectations they had for powered people. Does she fit in? Dos she wants to be a superhero. Can she live with the cameras following her daily?
You will need to read this story to find out.

The characters really brought this story to life and they’re what made this story good. The main character had powers that get her sent away to school. She needs to learn all she can especially about the others around her. I cannot wait to see what else this author had in store for us and I am looking forward to reading more of this series. Denial (Hero High Book 1)Denial by Mina Chara

I’ve enjoyed this young adult genre more than most teens I know or young adults. In this futuristic mystery, we go into the world of Icon City, a haven for one percenters. You instantly fall in love with the characters, especially the main character who has a powerful personality which is set to inspire the readers.
She’s fully aware of her personality which brings her great strengths in a lot of ways plus she’s aware of her surroundings and how it affects her.
In this fantasy, she used to be a “normal” 17-year-old girl until her dad found out she had superpowers and shipped her off to a famous school for powered people of the world — Hero High.
At Hero High, she lives in the SuperStructure where cameras follow her every move. People with powers have just as many expectations on them as humans do with the pressures they succumb themselves to. Through this she’s making money for the family and she’s starting to see the place for what it is.
She is us as we’re along for the ride with her as she takes on the role of hero as she attempts to discover the identity of an unknown villain and their intentions with the school. She’s a selfless hero in for the ride no matter the consequences.
Great adventure with mysteries. Fun read full of action-packed pages full of unpredictable twists and turns. Very fun to get through.

This is a full length fantasy. Written for the coming of age romance readers.

Welcome to the School for the Power People. Hero High provides all the things the students need. This is a different type of school you are used to. These high school students are told what to wear, as the school provides the clothes. The students are followed around by cameras and are told who they are to date. That being the case, they are paid for this. Good or bad the money is to help out their families. That is all I will tell you! No spoilers!

Mina Chara has written this Fantasy Adventure. I love the characters in this story. But most of all I feel as though I am right there beside the teens. This book is loaded with action and will keep you reading. Although it is written for teens and young adults, I feel anybody could read it. This gives you a chance to discuss this book with your teens, open communication is always GREAT. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series, as well as discussing it with my teenager. Well Done Mina Chara!
