Obedience (Ties That Bind Book 1) by Liza Snow – Review by Devon Pulliam

ObedienceObedience by Liza Snow
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Given the chance to work with an idol I think we would all jump to do that. Cassandra has dreamed of working with Chandler since the day before her 13th birthday. A few months shy of turning 26 she is at Dreamers and doing just that. But will her ideas of him change when she learns all the sides of him?

Cassandra is a aerial silk student and her dream is to perform. Chandler is not only the best but he is also a professor at the school and her mentor. But he has another side of him, another side of performing one that is more intimate than the silks. Chandler is trying his hardest to keep so much of his life secret. Cassandra is a breathe of fresh air and making him cross all sorts of lines and boundaries.

Cassandra is running from her own secrets while Chandler is hiding his own. Both fighting demons but also fighting the feelings they have for one another. There is no denying the chemistry is there for both of them, despite the student/teacher and age difference. This is just book 1 and I absolutely can’t wait to get my hands on book 2.

Just a reminder the author does place a note at beginning of book with a trigger warning for this book.

Lyle is saved as a young kid by Kyle. However Kyle ends up saving himself at the same time. Neither boy has a good home life and has endured a rough upbringing up until they meet. Immediately they become “brothers” in every since of the word except for being blood.

Now Lyle is at a point in his life where he coming into his own and doesn’t know how to handle these feelings and emotions he is having. This goes on for a number of years until finally he does the unthinkable and breaks Kyles heart.

Their story is about finding themselves, coming into their own and discovering and living their truth. Can they make it? Will Lyle finally give in to what he’s known about himself and quit hiding? Can Kyle move past the deceit and forgive?

I am already looking forward to the rest of this story.

Jasmine and her friend Phil are trying to get away with stealing a good amount of money from Jasmines boss. All so she can help her sick father with treatment. However they get robbed by a pair of thieves who have a little more experience under their belts!

This story is full of shenanigan’s from each pair, Jas and Phil, Bets and Zerk, Dan and Robbie. When Bets and Zerk are hiding in plain sight and don’t expect to be found. Then the original thieves outsmart them and show up!

You must read to find out if the original pair of thieves are able to steal their money back and what happens to each pair. I loved this story and found it comical at times even remarking out loud how dumb they were being!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is book 4 in this series and now I’m off to read the first 3! I love time travel books and this one kept me locked in. It did take me a few chapters to catch on to who is who and all the connections since I have not read the previous 3 books in the series. Also the language in which it is written slightly threw me off at first but after chapter 2 I had it down. I think this would also be a great audio book to listen to.

Will and Maggie go to the future and have to come back to help Dylan. The question is can they get back? Can they help in the past to keep both worlds from colliding? Can they make it to where the past and future are as it should be?

Notebook Mysteries ~ Suspicions (Notebook Mysteries Book 5) by Kimberly Mullins – Review by Devon Pulliam

Notebook Mysteries ~ Suspicions (Notebook Mysteries book #5)Notebook Mysteries ~ Suspicions by Kimberly Mullins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Book #5 picks up with Emma and Jeremy working to find missing children. Not just a few, but several dozen!

This series has not disappointed at all and I have quickly fallen in love with all the main characters. This one was heartbreaking for several reasons as a mom. As I said they were working to find a lot of missing children. Which of course Emma finds and rescues some herself and comes across one that lets her/them know that it was more than just being taken.

Then of course a case that Emma worked on a few books ago comes back. She gets the chance to work with some of the family again…. which leads to a better outcome for all involved.

Then there’s the case of the wife who murdered her husband. When someone eerily close to his description comes into the extended family Emma has created and surrounded herself with.

This book kept me on my toes because I couldn’t stop. I had to know exactly if my thoughts were right and what was going to happen those last few dozen chapters! Again this author has not disappointed! I hope there’s more to come with Emma and Jeremy!

The Silent Road by S.N. McKibben – Review by Devon Pulliam

The Silent RoadThe Silent Road by S.N. McKibben
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In this story there’s a lot to unfold. You have Dan, who is fighting to do what is right by his kid. He failed her and his ex-wife many years ago by always choosing the trucker life over them. The guilt he carries is heavy. He is trying to help her achieve her dreams.

This all comes when he is caught driving without a license. Then the real secret comes out as to why he has struggled passing the written test. Especially when it’s been proven and proved again that he is a heck of a trucker.

His boss pairs him up with a fellow driver Jake. Dan has made his own assumptions of Jake. However, this week long cross country trek proves to change minds, not just Dan’s but Jake’s as well. All while Dan is trying to make good on a promise to his kid.

The ending surprised me.

There is some MM relationship in this book and a lot of banter and “joking” about it from both characters and for some people that might be a bit uncomfortable. But if you look at the situation it’s something that if these were real people they’d likely be experiencing this exact thing.

A Dress To Remember: A Fairy TaleA Dress To Remember: A Fairy Tale by K.L. Small
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book reminds me of an old school fairy tale. Zarina is preparing for her big day and to not be outdone she goes to a dressmaker not inside the kingdom. With the direction of her Auntie they travel to the woods outside of the protected walls of the kingdom.

What a journey Zarina would take to get back to the castle in time for her gala. All while wearing a magical dress and fighting every step of the way to stay alive and get back.

She proves she’s more than just a pretty face and that a dress isn’t always what it seems.

When she comes across her Auntie’s son on her way back to the kingdom, she’s able to make a family a family again! I loved how this story unfolded and came together.

The Man in Black by L.R. Liverpool – Review by Devon Pulliam

The Man In BlackThe Man In Black by L.R. Liverpool
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

First off this isn’t a quick read over the weekend book! The author did an AMAZING job at adding in all sorts of details that kept the story strong and alive and keeps you sucked in. I’m also not typically one that reads western books. But I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this one.

Fenimore/Simon is a dreamer and wants to join a gang in the West, rather than stay on the family farm and settle down. He has romantized/glamorized this in his dreams.

His thoughts on this lifestyle are quickly changed when he meets one the most well known (at that time in this book) gang leaders, who takes him in for saving his life! Members start dying off and well I know I’m not the only one shocked at who the murderer was! Way to keep me/us guessing until the end!

Simon quickly discovers he is at a crossroads with his sexuality once he really gets to know fellow gang members. Now the author does a phenomenal job at letting it happen naturally and the story keeps moving vs concentrating on this one part.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and glad I stepped out of my normal style and gave this one a chance!

Chatroom With A View by Glenn Maynard – Review by Devon Pulliam

Chatroom With A ViewChatroom With A View by Glenn Maynard
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Well I was not expecting this book to be as dark as it was. Not in a bad way either. The story follows Troy as he has to come to terms with some evil in his life. Not only the evil at home but childhood bullies he now works with. Add in a crazy ex girlfriend turned stalker and you have a wonderful crime story!

Troy battles his own demons after seeing a crime at the hands of his father. After working with his childhood bullies and hearing what they do in chatrooms to various men he plots a plan of revenge. All while taking care of his father that he is keeping alive because of a threat he grew up with.

This book was hard to put down once I started it because it sucks you in from the very beginning! I love crime novels and this one was not a disappointment at all! In fact I was expecting a different ending!

This story has several different twists that were perfect for the storyline and this won’t be the last book from this author I read.

True Colors (Landry’s True Colors Series Book One) by Krysten Lindsay Hager – Review by Devon Pulliam

True Colors (Landry's True Colors #1)True Colors by Krysten Lindsay Hager
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is such a good book for young girls in middle school.
Landry goes thru losing/gaining/losing/gaining friendships over the course of the school year. Also while navigating having parents living apart and the start of a modeling career as well.

Landry shows grace and how hard it is to navigate that awkward age of 13/14. I thought the author did a wonderful job in the inner monologue along with the characters being super relatable. Middle school is so rough in all aspects and Landry shows that you can make it thru and have various friends groups and even how to handle those when they can’t cross paths with one another.

If my daughter was a little younger I would have her read this book/series because it’s relatable for those navigating the awkward teenage years between middle school and high school.

This story will not be everyone’s cup of tea. The disclosure upon opening the book is there for a reason. There is a lot of detail given and at first I was like it’s a bit much but then Xena reveals a BIG secret so it will make sense at one point.

However Xena finds out when she meets him in person he has felt the same way about her for years to! For months they have a secret relationship that they keep away from Veronica.

The Girl Who Escaped by Mark Nolan – Review by Devon Pulliam

I could see this book as a movie. It was so good that I honestly could not put it down and read it in a day! I just had to know what happened next!

Angie and 3 of her friends are celebrating spring break when it turns deadly. Angie is the only survivor and is running for her life! With the help of the FBI and a therapy dog she finds her voice again and they are able to find the kidnapper/killer and discover so much more.

With the help of the therapy dog and of course Angie’s determination to survive they uncover dozens of girls who have been taken.

This book reminds you to teach your loved ones some safety techniques and not just women. Angie’s father was smart in giving her some actual tools to keep handy if she needed them for her car but to also remind her that they could be used for other things as well. This very well saved her life!

Grab this book and read it for the rest of the story and be prepared to stay on your toes while reading it!

Underboss’s Retaliation (Sicilian Gods Book 2) by Via Mari – Review by Devon Pulliam

Underboss's Retaliation (Sicilian Gods Book 2)Underboss’s Retaliation by Via Mari
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is book 2 and continues with the Larussio family going up against the De Rosa family. This book picks up where book 1 ended. Even giving a glimpse into book 1 in the first few pages.

This time the story is primarily about Dominic and Emelia. Which they are from opposite families that are enemies. So the first few chapters kind of give that Romeo and Juliet vibe. I love how Emelia is shown to be stronger than thought to be!

Emelia and Dominic cross a line that can never be un-crossed and no matter what one of them would have to give up their family lineage if they wanted to be together. Emelia shows just how strong she is and Dominic shows her how far he will go to protect her.

I can’t wait to follow more of this family and see how this all plays out. I’m glad that each one is centered around a particular person.

What a great historical romance story! Typically books written in the old english language can be hard to follow sometimes but this one isn’t so over bearing with it.

Laurel convinces her aunt to let her marry Lord Laningham. They wed quickly and head to his estate. Where his twin is quickly against and does nothing to hide it. Laurel is left alone while her husband is away at war and let to defend herself against his sister and her antics.

Those early years of marriage are hard, but Laurel’s is made even harder and with every step forward you see Rhonda kicking her two steps back. The biggest question is will Laurel and Robert be able to survive and will their marriage last?

This book was a quick read but I wish there was more. Some of the story line felt a little empty, like it was missing some of the story. But you imagine yourself on the estate with Laurel as she is going through taking over the house.

What a good dark, mysterious, crime and passion filled story!

Adrianna had come to work for the Larussio family under seemingly false pretenses. Keeping secrets of her own until a horrific incident occurred that required her to be closer than ever to the family.

Mafia secrets come out and the path of Salvatore changed the minute he met Adrianna. When her own secrets come out he is faced with choices, on top of the decisions he’s making for the family already.

This book did not disappoint in the anticipation of what was going to happen next. A few twists and that was just what was needed to keep you guessing! I’ve read a few other books by this author and yet again not a disappointment in this story.

Road to the Mansfield (Express Investigations Book 1) by CB Laurence – Review by Devon Pulliam

Road to the Mansfield (Express Investigations, #1)Road to the Mansfield by CB Laurence
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love that all 3 stories connect at the end. This book is such an easy read that also kept my attention from start to finish.

The first story starts with Francie. Kind of reminds me of the song “Fancy” by Reba McEntire. She is living very poor, her mom is not in the best health and they have her baby brother to take care of. Francie comes back one day after selling some frog legs and her mom dresses her up all fancy and sends her off with one of her clients she sews for.

Francie’s singing voice saves her from so much until 2 crimes threaten to take all that way from her.

Then you have Rose. My heart broke for Rose through her whole story. She quickly marries a passerby to escape the life she is living and they head to California. Rose meets Francie and her life changes so much for the better. Rose quickly learns the man she “loves” and married that maybe her father was right about him. But like many marriages in the time period of this book, was trying to stick it out and make it work.

Then comes the story of Beau. The heartbreak he suffers after not being able to help a friend in a legal situation haunts him the rest of his life. However, between that and his divorce he changes his law practice and moves to California.

Oh how I can’t wait to see what happens with these 3 characters in the next book!
