This is a cute little story about a pirate pig and the adventures her frustration about waiting. The graphics are done well and add to the plot. I love the idea of this book about hating to wait. Every year on his Unbirthday Caspian receives a present from his Grandpa. When Caspian receives brown socks for his unbirthday present he is disappointed because brown socks is not what he wanted. When Grandpa tells him to put hot chocolate on his socks something unusual happens. Suddenly Caspian is flying through the air and so is Grandpa. Thanks to their magical hot chocolate socks they are able to go flying in the air on a series of adventures.
This is a cute book for kids about silly adventures between a boy and his Grandpa. It is beautifully illustrated which brings the story to life. I am sure that children of all ages will love the little adventure that Caspian and his Grandpa go on. A fun read!

As usual with this author this is a fun and interactive book that the whole family has enjoyed reading. It was engaging and lively but still had a strong lesson running through it. The story appealed to both my children, despite their age difference. My eldest was thoroughly disappointed when her socks didn’t make her fly too. Lois Wickstom is definitely a firm favourite in our house. All of her books are read multiple times and it is always exciting when we get a new one. We are already looking forward to the next one we get.
Yet again this author delivers with another fun experience with education hidden right in it.
This story follows the lifestyle of Monarch Butterflies from their tiny little egg eating shedding all of it! At the end you get even more tid Bits of information

Piggy pirates and wanting to grow up fast are the main themes in this book. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful. The story is cute. I think this would be a good book to read to kids under 6. Worth the purchase just for the amazing illustrations alone.

Another great read by Lois Wickstrom! These are all such good learning books for kids. My 4 year old granddaughter loves each one, especially this one. She was very interested in what was happening with the caterpillar. As always, we definitely recommend!
A cute story for the little ones. It is about a young piglet who can’t wait to get to big kid school and the surprises that await her. This is a quick story that little ones will enjoy especially those in preschool. The little piglet has interactions with family and friends learning how to wait and being curious about what will happen at her new school. Little ones can relate to the piglet and it is written in a way that entertains and explains easily to them, making this a fun and entertaining read for preschoolers.

I always enjoy reading Lois Wickstrom stories i like to put them up on the tv and read them to my son, nieces and nephews.it was a quick read and i love how it shows the different stages of the life cycle for the monarch caterpillar.being that its almost spring i’m excited to go outside to find out very own to watch and report/ learn about. Im definitely going to use that website to get those flowers so we can have lots of butterfly this season.
Loretta’s Caterpillar is the third book in the Loretta’s Insects series by Lois Wickstrom. It is another fun, fact-based, interesting, educational, and entertaining illustrated children’s storybook. Loretta loves insects and this time she discovers and then cares for a butterfly egg, watching over and protecting it from harm as it moves through its cycle. We get to learn about butterfly lifecycles along the way, as well as facts about Monarch butterflies- how to tell males from females, their migration routes, their food source etc. This is not just a cute story, it also encourages children to learn while they read. I read this story with my grandson, but as with the other books in this particular series, the illustrations aren’t quite as eye catching as some of Ms. Wickstrom’s other books and didn’t grab his attention like the others have done. The ‘new’ cover is great, but unfortunately the illustrations inside the book aren’t up to the same standard. Great little story though. This book explains the Metamorphosis of butterflies in an easy way to understand. Perfect for kids to comprehend. Short enough that there attention span doesn’t waver. A great book I recommend. Very educational for kids.
Loretta loves the outdoors and especially a garden and all it has to offer. In this book we see Loretta watching over an egg and seeing it grow and change through its circle of life to become a monarch butterfly. I remember being a kid and Dad taking us out to catch the caterpillars and chrysalis. We would take them home and watch them through their change to a beautiful butterfly and then release them back into the wild. Now as an adult I have taken my grandkids to do the same. It is a lovely story that will inspire kids to venture into their own gardens and find out what treasures they can find. The pictures are bright and colourful. Lois has also provided information on how to start your collection to nurture the process yourself.
Loretta loves various types of bugs. This book focuses on monarch butterflies.
In May, Loretta sees a milkweed field full of monarch butterflies but shortly after seeing them, they disappear. This upsets Loretta, as she really enjoys looking at butterflies. She makes a trip to the milkweed field and sees lots of little “seeds” on the back of plants. She soon learns that these “seeds” are going to turn into caterpillars, which turn into butterflies. Loretta is able to watch the various stages in which a butterfly is formed.
I am a huge fan of Lois Wickstrom and her books!! This one is unique in that some of the words are different shaped to represent what they are saying. There is also a bit of information in the back of the book about monarch butterflies, milkweed plants, and where to obtain milkweed seeds. It also shows the differences in male and female monarchs. I learned a couple of things reading this book! This is a great book to read to anyone of any age and would be great in a homeschool, daycare, personal library, etc!

This book is packed with information and colourful illustrations. The story will captivate children while they learn the life cycle of the monarch butterfly; from the egg to metamorphosis to migration. Even I learned things that I didn’t know. Never would I have thought that it took five generations of butterflies to migrate from the Stares to Canada. It’s absolutely amazing! The book even teaches you how to differentiate between male and female butterflies. I e read many books by this author and this one has to be my favourite. Your children will love it too.
I love that this book teaches kids about butterflies. Their lifecycle, how to tell the difference between a male and female and background on monarch butterflies. It is also interesting adults to learn as well, if they haven’t already. The art is lovely to look at and the different words on each page in a different font style really are eye catching The only thing that was kind of hard for me to grasp was the name Loretta chooses for the butterfly. I don’t think it is really kid friendly to try and read. Overall great story for children.
This has fast become my favorite kids science story book. Loretta has adventures learning about monarch butterflies this time. The author includes terrific tidbits about them in the back. These entertaining stories that I use with our homeschool and my kiddo loves them. The story is educational and fun. The pictures are colorful. The kids learn new words about the butterfly. Every child’s library should have this one.

Loretta finds a monarch caterpillar egg and protects it from a wasp, a bird, and a lizard as it eats milkweed, grows through metamorphosis, becomes a butterfly and finally flies away to continue its migration.

Lois is a former high school chemistry teacher and former head science teacher at Science in the City Summer Camp in Philadelphia. She has also been an adjunct science teacher at University of South Florida. Since retiring, she continues to take science classes. Her class in Forensic Biology led to Little Red, The Detective, in which Red is studying fingerprint identification, so she can tell that “Grandma” isn’t who she says she is.
Lois has taken so many science classes that she believes science is the solution to almost every problem, including the dilemmas in fairy tales. She has invented what she calls Science Folktales. In each science-based tale, the protagonist achieves a better ending than the original because of learning scientific principles. She has turned some of these tales into plays.
She has also created a series of Mermaid Science stories, which make use of water science.
Lois is married to the love of her life. She has two children, four grandchildren and a dog.
What a cute story !! We loved the pirate theme & the adorable pig characters . We are going through a bit of the same thing, so my kids related very much to Half-Pint. Beautiful illustrations as well ! Really just a great little book.

I loved the book and thought it was a very cute story. The illustrations are bright and eye catching, I loved the pirate names and know kids will have no problem paying attention to the story. It’s a great book to read before your little one starts school for the first time or even moving onto a new class. I know many kids are so excited to start school and nervous once they’re there, being able to relate to Half-Pint and seeing that she’s fine in the end will help them.

This author writes books that are full of lessons. However she also adds LOTS of imaginative fun as well. This story is no different. Caspian’s grandfather takes Caspian on this adventure with “hot chocolate socks”. Great illustrations full of color to draw children into the story.
My 6-year-old absolutely loved this book. We laughed and giggled so hard at many points in the book. Half-Pint can’t wait to go to school and is impatient, but when the time actually comes to go to school, Half-Pint is skeptical and unsure. This book was precious and will be a staple for my kids bookshelf!

The author addresses young children who are eagerly awaiting their chance to be finished with babyhood. Vivid illustrations accompany each scenario proposed by the main character concerning her future preschool. Readers learn what they might be able to look forward to, at least when it comes to leaving babyhood behind. The main character learns that even though she looks forward to something new and exciting, it is normal to have some anxiety to sort through. The author and the illustrator have done a truly amazing job with their precocious preschool pirate!

This is an adorable little children’s book. I read it my children and they absolutely loved it. This is about a little girl who loves everything to do with the outdoors and nature. She comes up with an idea that she wants to share with the world. And with the help of friends and family to help with creating this idea she has. This little girl is smart, determined and won’t let anything stop her from doing what she wants to do. The pictures were very detailed and amazingly illustrated.

Arrrgh! Me Hate To Wait! by Mary Bleckwehl. This is such a fun book. I bought it for my 4 year old soon to be 5 nephew and even his 9 year old brother enjoyed it. Its the story of a Pirate Pig who is called Half Pint Porky. She can not wait to attend Pearl of Pork Pirate School. Her older siblings are all there and she just thinks its really unfair that she can’t go yet. When it does become time for her to go she is re thinking this whole thing. Its a bit scary. When she finally goes and makes friends she realizes its not so scary after all. We all loved this story. We laughed several times and the pictures were great. This book would make a great gift for the preschooler in your life and their older siblings might just like it too!

We are a family of four so I picked this book up for the kiddos. One is in elementary school, the other starts next year. Neither of them really care very much for being patient or waiting for things so I figured this could be a cute relatable story for them. I picked it out based on the title and the cover, but it was so much better than I was expecting.
The illustrations were very well drawn and very cute. My oldest giggled really hard at the pig booty a few pages in. My youngest loved that there was a place called poop deck. They loved it and asked questions about a few things in the story, as well as pointing out things in the illustrations on the page.
What I loved the most about it was that it showed the excitement for starting school, but in the end also showed that it’s also okay to be scared to start school. I love that it continued past that fear and showed that it was completely okay to feel that way. She went to school, found friends, and realized that it wasn’t as bad as she thought it was going to be. My youngest really liked that part. I highly recommend this book to parents of young children.
