Detective Dylan and the Case of the Missing Mail
By: MJ Murray

As an educator, I am always looking for new authors, books, and series to add to my classroom library. I am looking for books that I know that my kids will love and that they will be able to read independently yet will still hold their attention. This book delivers on all of those. Dylan is such a fun main character. He wants to be a detective and is doing everything he can to work towards that goal – buying a kit, watching tv shows, you name it he’s done it. Dylan even gets to have his little sister help out. Each chapter is entertaining as the reader is following Dylan as he tries to solve the case. As a teacher, I loved the resources that are available to teacher as well as the amount of vocabulary support found within the book! I definitely recommend picking this one up.

Caspian is looking forward to his unbirthday. As Grandpa always has the best gifts put under his bed. Caspian thought he could influence his Grandpa on his gift this year. Read this exciting story to find out just what Caspian found. I have to say I have really enjoyed reading books from this author. Every book adds adventure and so many ideas for open ended books. A story is not just a story from this author. The story is well written and easy for all children to follow. I hope you enjoy this series as much as my grandkids as well as myself. Happy reading!

The Christmas Carousel (The Brass Ring Series Book 2) by K. L. Small – Review by Nicole Thompson

A charming sequel, ’The Christmas Carousel” by K.L. Small continues the Enchanting Brass Ring fantasy series for middle-grade readers. Despite being a bit beyond the intended audience, the book’s universal appeal captures the spirit of youthful wonder that resides in us all.

Set during the festive season, the story reunites readers with Rusty and his magical brass ring, a gift from his Grandpa that transports him on fantastical journeys whenever he rides the park’s carousel. With winter closing the park ride, Rusty’s curiosity leads him to a kiddies’ Christmas carousel in the mall. Eager to experience each animal ride, he navigates the challenges of being just under the height limit. However, Rusty must balance his adventures with saving money for thoughtful gifts, especially for his Grandpa, whose mind tends to wander.

Between earning money by clearing neighbors’ driveways and exploring the carousel’s various animals, Rusty discovers different facets of Christmas. The narrative seamlessly weaves in historical tidbits, prompting Rusty to contemplate the true essence of the holiday. Young readers will be enthralled by Rusty’s diverse escapades, culminating in an extraordinary adventure atop a donkey.

While designed for young readers, “The Christmas Carousel” offers an engaging experience for parents reading to their little ones. Packed with action, endearing characters, and a thoroughly gratifying conclusion, the book delivers another captivating tale.

The Christmas Carousel (The Brass Ring Series Book 2) by K. L. Small – Review by Julie Johnson

The Christmas Carousel (The Brass Ring Series, Book 2)The Christmas Carousel by K.L. Small
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is such a sweet series that young readers can enjoy reading independently or having it read to them. Rusty’s grandpa gave him a brass ring awhile back that takes them on magical adventures when it is used while riding the carousel. This time, the carousel is the Christmas carousel in the mall as the one in the park is closed for the season. Rusty has his heart set on a specific gift for Grandpa but it’s a bit out of his price range. It’s during his carousel adventures that Rusty learns the best gift to give Grandpa.

This book does address elderly aging and Alzheimer’s. It would be a good way to introduce a young mind to this issue should it be something they should be exposed to.

This is the second book in a series and could be read as a standalone. However, you will miss out on a lot of adventures from the previous story, along with a much more detailed background.

I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading about the Haunted Carousel coming in 2024!!

The Christmas Carousel by K.L. Small is the second book in the Brass Ring series. It follows now 11-year-old Russell thorough a special seasonal Christmas Carousel in the mall. The seven wooden animals he meets help him uncover the true meaning of Christmas.

While I enjoyed the first book, I have to say this one was far better. It touched my heart to read about some of the historical events and people of Christmas. Many of the topics covered would be good for a young adult reader entering middle school.

My kids always love it when we pick up a book by this author, and this one was no different! It never fails to amaze me the way she writes amazing children’s books that actually get them thinking about a deeper meaning. This one sparked a conversation in our household about fear, bullies, and anxiety. The illustrations are wonderful and really add to the storyline as well. Will the bird ever find the courage to break out of his egg? Read on to find out! I highly recommend picking this book up for any kiddos in your life, whether that’s at home or in a school setting.

What a sweet little story about a young kid not giving up. Ben has been entering a baking competition for several years with his biscuit recipe. He never places first. But that doesn’t stop him from trying each and every year. This year however he is determined to change that. With the help of none other than his cat he tries a new idea. This book is perfect for early school aged kids and teaches a great lesson of try, try again. I also loved how Ben’s dad is right there supporting him the whole way!

Absolutely loved the watercolor illustrations. The book touched on some very important and sadly real-world problems with bullying. Led to a long conversation with my seven-year-old son about why people bully others for seemingly no reason. Sadly, he has some real-world experience with bullying in pre-k, with the same thing he was a smaller kid and a bigger kid in his class tried to intimidate him sadly I can’t be at school to protect him, but his big brother was able to step in and get the kid to stop. Once again, the talented Lois Wickstrom finds a simplistic and beautiful way of bringing real topics to younger children in a way that is natural and unfortunately realistic.

Unbirthday presents are unexpected things so when he wakes up to find Baking Up Dust, he gets creative. Will he and grandpa succeed in baking the perfect bicycle? I have found that Lois Wickstrom’s books are quickly becoming my seven-year-old son’s favorites as it fuels his imagination giving it no limits to what he can dream up.

Mama Warbler is waiting for her nest full of eggs to hatch, but the first one who does, isn’t her own, it is the Cuckoo’s egg, but she still looks after it until all her eggs have hatched but one.

The last egg belongs to a very timid warbler, it also doesn’t help that the Cuckoo is whispering about how awful it is outside off the egg and to stay in her shell where it is safe.

What will the last warbler chick do, stay in the shell, or venture out into the big wide world? This is a charming story with a lovely message within about kindness and how it can affect others when it isn’t reciprocated.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This Egg Won’t Hatch is a kid’s book designed for children between the ages of four to eight years of age. It tells the story of a Mama Warbler who is waiting for the last egg to hatch in her nest. The first egg was too large and turned out to be a Cuckoo that was laid in her nest. Mama Warbler decide to accept the Baby Cuckoo as her own and treat it as she would if it were one of her own eggs. The last egg, Timid Chick, will not hatch because the baby is too scared to come out of her shell after being told by the Baby Cuckoo that she should stay in her egg because it is no fun inside. One day while Mama Warbler is off getting food to feed her babies the Baby Cuckoo kicks Timid Chick out of the nest. This gives her a whole new outlook on things. Mama Warbler is very patient as she tries to coax Timid Chick out of her shell. This was a beautiful story with cute characters that teach valuable lessons in patience, understanding, love, kindness, family, bullies, confidence, and overcoming fear. The illustrations are fun, bright, colorful, and really bring the story to life.

This Egg Won’t Hatch by Lois Wickstrom. Another amazing book by Lois Wickstrom! I love her books because they are always entertaining and informative. This one is no different. Its the story of a Mama Warbler who is in the process of watching her eggs hatch. One is way to big to be a warbler and ends up being a cuckoo. The last egg won’t hatch because they are scared. The cuckoo keeps telling him to stay in his shell because its a big, bad, scary world out here. Finally Mama Warbler kicks the cuckoo out so that the timid chick can hatch. This book will help kids with anxiety and letting them know that things usually end up working out with time and patience. Such a fun book. Would make a great gift as well.

A warbler bird has a nest with her eggs in it, but there is also a bigger egg that a cuckoo bird laid there as well. Ms. Warbler doesn’t mind taking care of another egg and bird, but what she doesn’t know is that the cuckoo hatchling is being mean and frightening her last egg that hasn’t hatched. Through this cute tale you get to see how the bird overcomes his fear after being bullied. The beautiful watercolor illustrations go along with the story nicely and help engage the reader. This story has so many open doors for thought. Dylan and his sister Emily grow closer, once they learn to work together. Dylan wants nothing more then to be a detective, he saved his allowance to pay for the kit. He has even watched every episode of Youth Sleuths. Being the older brother he is the detective while Emily gets to help out. This story is well written and easy for the little ones to follow. I love that the author answered the readers’ questions at the end. She also added a new word to each chapter. The vocabulary words with definitions at the end of the book added that little extra learning. This is a great start to this series. I look forward to read what comes next for Dylan and Emily.

What a delightful tale highlighting self-reliant problem-solving abilities and imparting knowledge about baking elements.
Kneading a Winning Idea is a book centered around crafting delectable biscuits. Despite Ben’s annual attempts to clinch victory in the local baking competition, the ideal recipe continues to elude him. However, inspiration from a furry companion leads him to concoct a winning bread that finally secures his triumph. Ben discovers the significance of persistence, regardless of the outcome. The story instills problem-solving skills, emphasizing that experiencing loss or failure is not inherently harmful.
Our feline friends are constant kneaders, making this story particularly endearing to us. I love that it also came with a fun recipe. It’s a wonderful addition to the narrative and a perfect opportunity for my son and me to connect in the kitchen after reading!

The Christmas Carousel by K. L. Small was just as exciting and adventurous as the first book in The Brass Ring Series! This carousel adventure finds Rusty getting ready for the holiday season several months after the ending of The Magic Carousel. Grandpa’s health has slowly declined and Rusty searches for the perfect gift for him. The Christmas Carousel is set up at the local mall and more exciting, magical things happen when Rusty begins to ride. This book is so heartfelt, sweet, and touches, again, on some tough topics such as Alzheimer’s Disease. It also explores the true meaning of the Christmas season. The same realistic, believable characters return in this book and I found myself connecting with Rusty and his family as if they were my own. Such a wonderful, quick read by K. L. Small!
