I loved reading the book Yule Lads Legend: Iceland’s Jólasveinar by Heidi Herman. It is a story that is a delight to read by young and old. It is a book that is based on legend and will have you hooked from the very beginning. I wasn’t able to put it down until I had read the final page. The characters are intriguing and interesting. The basis of the book is intriguing as well as one that has to be read to understand and enjoyed. The author does an amazing job of making both the story and the characters come alive. Don’t miss out on an amazing story that is exciting and entertaining. I highly recommend reading it.

Yule Lads Legend: Iceland’s Jolasveinar by Heidi Herman is a lovely “untraditional” Christmas story that is really heart warming and unique. This isn’t the usual story that everyone will know and associate with Christmas, instead focusing on an Icelandic tradition. I really enjoyed reading this to my daughter as it gave a little extra something to the build up to Christmas.
This book is definitely one that will become a yearly tradition for us. Not only is it fun and entertaining to read but it is a fantastic way to introduce children to the ways in which other cultures celebrate this time of year. My daughter loved the story which alone would have been enough to make me read it again however I also found it appealing and enjoyed every moment. This is a brilliant book and one I would recommend!

This is the story of how thirteen troll brothers find that all the pranks, stealing of items and mischief that they are used to, isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

When the first troll arrives and starts getting up to the same old mischief he always does, he is seen by a human and makes the boy a gift to persuade him to keep his secret, but when the boy does keep the troll’s secret and then the next morning finds the gift as well, he is happy.

The troll sees that the boy is happy with his gift and is confused to begin with, but when he feels happy as well and tells his brother troll’s what has happened, a chain reaction begins and a whole new world of happiness and smiles are brought into the troll’s world.

This is a lovely short story which is a modern take on an Icelandic Legend of The Yule Lads, it is a tale which shows that even something that starts off as selfish can be changed into something wonderful when done for the right reasons, it is a quick read and one which children and adults alike will enjoy.

Such a cute story. I am planning to read it to my children and also ask the kiddos in my book club to read it. It is a folklore based out of Iceland where 13 Yule lad kids always go to a village to kidnap naughty children. They take back the children to their mother who is a troll to make a stew.
This year, they decide to leave little gifts and presents to children instead of capturing the children. They understand the joy of giving and realize the euphoria when you see someone happy with your actions.
A fun and enjoyable read, I don’t mind giving it to my boys!!!

Yule Lads Legend by Heidi Herman was a cute little Christmas story! It was a quick read, and a very descriptive tale at that. It was interesting to read another cultures Christmas fable/legend/tale, and to me it was reminiscent of the Twelve Days if Christmas song, but in book form. This story was a retelling, and I will assume it did its job very well, since I haven’t read the original tale before. This was a great Christmas story that I would recommend for kids of all ages during the holiday season.

Yule Lads Legend: Iceland’s Jólasveinar by Heidi Herman is a children’s tale about a legend that is a part of Iceland’s folklore history. This little gem is a fun Christmas story that shares part of their history and traditions. Heidi’s telling is original and kept my grandbabies enthralled as we shared the story. They wanted to know if we could adopt the tradition because they would get more fun, games and presents leading up to Christmas day.

With Thirteen troll’s life is interesting and full of mischief and mayhem, happiness and fun. This is a must read to share with your family and friends.

This is a cute Christmas story which I had never heard  before  but I found it enjoyable. It is perfect to read to children as it contains aspects children love such as trolls but also shares the message that Christmas is just about taking but that by giving we can also be happy.

There are 13 Yule Lads who’s mother is the evil troll. Every year they go into villages to cause trouble and take naughty children back to their mother to be made into stew.

However this year, instead of just causing trouble the Yule Lads start leaving little gifts for the children and they realise how amazing it is to see someone happy through their actions.

I just love this little gem of a holiday tale. I shared this with my children all from ages 13 to 6 months and they were engrossed in the story and loved the ‘real elves on the shelf’ as the would say. It is fun and enthralling and felt like a small escape to Iceland. I love sharing different cultures and traditions from all over the world with my children and this is the perfect book to do that. I have a feeling this will now be a new tradition for us as we read this together each holiday season. This is one you don’t want to miss!

I enjoyed this book. I really love how this is not a typically Christmas story, at least in America. The trolls are mean at first and try to help get the bad kids to Gryla, but then one Christmas they decide to be more on the nice side and provide the kids with presents. It is nice to see that even though these presents are very basic, the children are happy, which in turn makes the trolls feel joy. It seems they will no longer try to lure the bad children, but continue to make them happy. I really like how the trolls want nothing in return except for the satisfaction of making someone else smile, that is very good lesson to teach children.

This is a cute childrens Christmas story. The illustrations were just as cute as the story line. This is a story about a Christmas troll that is seen by a young shepherds boy. The boy must keep the troll’s secret so he offers him a gift. But will he be the one to get a gift? Will he learn the gift of joy? This is a story of Christmas spirit and learning the meaning of that. This is a great folklore that any child would enjoy. I highly recommend this book.

My passion and a common theme in my writing is my Icelandic heritage. I started with children’s books and folklore, and enjoy adding a little taste of Iceland in my contemporary novels. I spent thirty years in the telecommunications industry, which was rewarding and challenging, and had a thread of writing. When my father passed away in 2015, I reassessed my priorities, opted for early retirement, and indulged my passion for writing. In the past five years, I have written several children’s folklore books, a cookbook, a novel, and a new non-fiction motivational book, all honoring my Icelandic heritage. I am a snowbird, living in South Dakota during the summer and Arizona during the winter, migrating with my husband, our four horses and three dogs. His passion for team roping and my love of rodeo has carried over into my novels, in what I hope is an interesting and unique experience for readers.

I’m not a huge non-fiction fan and not to keen on a self help type book, but I’ll be honest this year has me changing a lot of my ways. I was definitely pleasantly surprised how much I liked this book and I mean that in the nicest way, it’s of no fault of the author that this isn’t my normal read so I’m glad to say this book definitely had this wonderful way of keeping me turning the pages. I felt an encouragement throughout the entire book and I definitely could use all the encouragement I can get theses days. It’s got quotes I’ll carry with me for sure and appreciate that. Which it’s not my usual reading I’m glad I found it and gave it a try. Four stars and highly recommended!

This is a book full of ideas to change your outlook on life and find ways to make it fulfilling, especially for those that are ready to retire. I am not quite in that category but I enjoyed reading this book. I especially loved the quotes the author added to each chapter that gave you a sense of what the chapter is about. The examples and ideas the author shares are written to make you feel like “Hey, I could do that with my friend…” or “I can see my daughter and I having that kind of fun!” I would suggest this to friends and family as a good suggestion to add life to your years at any age.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

On With the Butter! is an uplifting book by Heidi Herman. It is aimed at retired people, but readers of all ages can benefit from the advice and inspiration Herman shares. Drawing on Icelandic philosophies, via Herman’s amazing mother (the anecdotes from her life are at times almost unbelievable and always entertaining!), we are encouraged to live life to the fullest.
I approached this book in part out of professional interest, as my field of Community Arts often involves working with older people. It was good to see that, while Herman’s tone throughout the book was light and conversational, it was backed up with academic sources. It’s great to see someone advocating for older people engaging in all kinds of activity, and Herman gives plenty of practical advice on how to encounter different experiences.
With COVID-19 currently limiting the activities available to us, and particularly more vulnerable elderly people and those with underlying health conditions, many of the activities Herman suggests are not currently safe. In spite of that, I think this book could be more valuable than ever. Herman includes many suggestions of activities that can be done from the home, or in safer outdoor spaces. It would be a great resource for someone who feels like they have exhausted the possibilities of their restricted world. Additionally, reading about Herman and her mother’s adventures provides a much-needed burst of escapism!
For me, this is a five-star book. I would recommend it to anyone who feels bored and cooped up! It reminded me of a book I had as a child – Something to do. Whenever I was bored, I would open it up and get an idea for an exciting project to embark on. I can see On With the Butter becoming a similarly useful resource!

On With The Butter is an inspirational / self help bookby Heidi Herman. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Herman, but I’m going to be checking a few more out in the near future.

This book actually got me thinking and may change my life, if I can stick to some of Ms. Herman’s philosophies. Last year, I was diagnosed with cancer. I went through the treatment and am now cancer free for about nine months. However, the treatments weren’t so friendly with my body. I was thinking a lot this past month about being fifty three years old and unable to move around like I used to even two years ago. My life consists mostly of working 10-12 hour days coming home watching tv and sleeping. With the pandemic, my husband and I don’t even go out to dinner anymore. I was thinking the other day, I need to make so e changes, and reading this book gave me some great ideas. I’m not an outdoor person, but the hobbies and book club ideas sound wonderful. Trying something new sounds like a breath of fresh air.

Thank you Ms. Herman for giving me all of these new ideas to enhance my life. I’m ready to change my focus from all work and no play to finding things I enjoy and indulging myself. Life is too short to continually be weighed down by the daily grind. I look forward to putting some of you lists to good use. This is an excellent guide to make a happier me. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge.

This was an interesting read for me. I will be the first to admit I normally don’t go for the non-fiction reads or self-help books quite as much as I probably should. This one came to me in a time I needed the quotes and words of encouragement as I read. This is always a thing that I enjoy with fiction novels so that was a nice plus for sure and kept me engaged as I worked my way through the chapters. This will make you look at life in different ways and discover some pointers to help with those difficult and positive moments we all experience as we traverse this thing called life without a handbook. I would be interested to see what else and if maybe it is geared to a younger audience that Heidi Herman has available. I am a fan for sure of the way she approaches thinking and difficult topics so I would be interested in seeing what other thoughts she may have. This is one for a rainy Sunday when you just need some positivity and a leg up!

Heidi gives us stories from those around her that are inspiring and full of wisdom, I mean just look at her 94 year old mother! Heidi Herman gives you a glimpse into the Icelandic life and the history of the saying “On with the butter!” Although this book is geared towards those who are retired or on the brink of retiring and looking to prepare for it better, I found it to be really helpful as well.

The book starts with an introduction to Heidi and how she learned about this saying and what it means to her and how it has impacted her life. The explanation is detailed, as is the description of what life can be like when this saying hasn’t been introduced into it.

The format is one that I have not seen used in such an effective way before, each chapter deals with a different aspect of life, there are her thoughts on it, a few anecdotes from her personal experiences and then there is a challenge to go along with it.

This book is a great read if you’re looking for inspiration on how to get the best out of life, giving the little kick needed to try out new things and why it is so important to keep your zest and enjoyment of life present at all times.

So take a chance to discover what it could be like to get on with life and “Spread more Living onto Everyday Life” by saying “On With The Butter” as well!
