This was a new spin on the old jack and the beanstalk fairytale. It’s a cute spin on it. My girl loves every kids book by this author. They are really good at drawing you in and keeping you interested until the last word.

I loved this retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk. On the first page, we meet the giant depicted as an alien, the story loosely follows the Jack and the Beanstalk traditional story but with a modern twist with illustrations to compliment it. I would highly recommend this story.

What a fun and creative retelling this book is. This is the first book of the authors I have read and I went into it blindly. I was not expecting a Jack retelling, not only was I surprised but what a wonderful surprise it was. I can’t wait to read this to my granddaughter.

My entire family and I love this author’s work! We know that we are in for a fun adventure when we begin reading one of their books. This one is a twist of a classic Jack and the Beanstalk, and we absolutely fell in love with it! The illustrations were super neat, and I thought it flowed just perfectly for a kids book. It held the attention of my hyperactive 7-year-old, and even got some conversation going with my 11-year-old as she doesn’t think about the older fairy tales as much. This book is original and incredibly unique. I highly recommend picking it up and sharing it with the younger ones in your life!

This is a cute story. A kids twisted version of Jack and the Beanstalk in a good way. I would age this book for children a little bit older than her normal books, but that’s just me.

As always Lois Wickstrom NEVER disappoints!! I lovedddddd this one because it had a small jack and the beanstalk feel. But it wasn’t Jack and the beanstalk AT ALL. It portrayed how kids are a bit greedy nowadays days. But it also showed how clever children are. The illustrations were great! Very colorful! Oh and did I mention the book was funny?!

Lois Wickstrom did it again. She took a classic fairytale and gave it a twist. If this is the first Lois Wickstrom book you read I highly recommend checking her other stories out. This twist is on Jack and the Beanstalk and I was not disappointed at the new views and narratives.

How to Catch Little Boys and Eat Them is a take on Jack and the Beanstalk. My son has not heard that story, so he didn’t make the connection, but I did. I thought it was really creative and had things changed for this generation. The ending didn’t make sense to my 7 year old, and I had to explain it to him. Then, once he got it, he thought it was funny. He was very confused about a goose that lays golden eggs, until I explained to him that’s just how the story has always gone. I thought Jack was very cleaver to trick the giant. Because we read other books by this author/illustrator combo, my son noticed the similarities and thought Jack looks a lot like Caspian. So, while this book was not familiar to my 7 year old, I caught on, and we both loved it. (Side note, I don’t like the title. How to Catch Little Boys had my thoughts going a TOTALLY different direction)

This was another great kid’s book. I have totally enjoyed every single one and same with my children. This is a great book based on the fairly tale jack and the beanstalk, but with a little twist. Its all from the giant’s point of view. The giant plans and writes them all out on how to catch little boys and eat them. I absolutely love how other people have different point of views on different stories and these never seem to get me to think. This book was very entertaining, it was funny, cute, skimming, learning, and the pictures are just great and really flow and show the story in a different way which brought the story almost to life.

This book was a twist on Jack and the Beanstock. I read this story to my almost 10 year old and the laughter out of her was priceless. The pictures in the story was bright and colorful. Jack was lazy and wanted to get money. The ogre was watching his every move and trying to get him to the top so he could eat him. I would say this book is more for age 7-8 years old.

This is a cute retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk with a twist. Wickstrom’s take on classic fairytales are unique and this one is no different. In this version, we get the giant’s perspective and what he plans to do with Jack; however, Jack outsmarts him with some quick problem-solving. I always enjoys the way she weaves lessons into her stories and the illustrations are always interesting and special.

What do giants and little boys have in common? They both need to eat and a giants favourite thing is little boys, but not when they are scared, so this giant hatches a plan to catch his favourite meal.

He is so confident in how well his plan works, that he makes an infomercial for any other giants to follow, this is of course after he tries it our for himself and his first victim is Jack.

First he sells some magic beans, then he let’s Jack steal a goose which lays golden eggs and a golden harp, so when Jack comes back the third time, it is time to show him the cooking pot.

Will Jack fall victim to this giants plan, or will be able to escape? This is a fun retelling of a favourite childhood tale which any age will enjoy from beginning to end.

Retelling but with a twist. Once again, Lois Wickstrom allows your imagination to flourish with this retelling of a classic. We all know Jack and the Beanstalk, but did Jack really steal the goose and golden harp? From the eyes of the giant Earth boys are just lazy and easy to pick. Until Jack shows he’s not as easy to trick as the giant thought.
My six-year-old once again loved this retelling of a classic and even my eleven-year-old giggled a time or two when there was a twist. Each of the author’s books give me a newfound love for the classic stories I grew up on and I love getting to share them with my boys in a new way.

A very clever take on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk! Jack is a typical Earth boy and the ogre/giant is watching his every move. He’s got a plan to get Jack to visit but Jack might be a little more cunning than the ogre.

This is a cute book that kids will love. They won’t expect the ending, which will make it more fun!

In a cute twist of Jack and the beanstalk this author retells the well known story but from the giants perspective. He lures boys by selling magic beans and a harp. Etc. As the story goes on Jack climbs the stalk and the giant thinka hes trapped him but Jack manages to outsmart the giant in the end.
This is a cute story with engaging illustrations that my daughter loved and may open up conversations about topics that may be harder to address with kiddos.

This was a pretty cool retelling of Jack and the BeanStalk. This is told from the perspective of the giant.
The giant lures little children to come to his castle, and sells them the magic beans, the golden harp and golden eggs. When Jack comes up to the castle, the giant tries to play the same trick on Jack.
But Jack plays a counter trick on the giant. He offers to do an infomercial for the giant to lure more little boys to come up the castle. The giant believes him , oblivious of the tricks Jack has up his sleeve.

I thoroughly enjoyed this retelling of my favorite fairy tale with bright illustrations.

This is a story all about Jack and how he outsmarts the giant in the sky. It is a very interesting take on Jack and the Beanstalk. The illustrations are cute. I enjoyed how Jack turned on the giant – by tricking him, using his problem solving abilities to get himself out of a sticky situation. Cute story to read a loud ot your littles – would prompt good discussion in a classroom about right vrs. wrong.

Imaginative retelling
This fun and clever story is a twist on the classic Jack and the Beanstalk. This will appeal to so many kids as it is told from the POV of the giant. This author, as with all her books, has cleverly interwoven educational aspects within the text. Another great addition to the bookshelf. Recommend.

This was a very unique retelling of Jack and The Beanstalk and the author has written this one from the Giants perspective. She has tried to bring a modern twist to the story by using modern thing like televisions and the use of media – in this case television adverts. In all honesty this isn’t my favourite of her stories that I’ve read but it would have some great follow up activities for children – they could make their own adverts for tv like the giant and jack did in this story.
The illustrations were good – bright and colourful and the story is short so it would definitely hold a child’s attention.

I always enjoy getting an opportunity to check out this author’s works and again this story did not disappoint. Even in Kindle format the illustrations were delightful. I enjoyed the twist on a classic story and getting to see things from a giant’s perspective. I found his methods of infomercials and selling his tricks to other giants hilarious. For kids, I think this would be a great way to open up some engaging conversations about problem solving and safe ways to interact with others. It had a cute twist at the end that was very entertaining. This is a great book for younger youth and even some older grade school youth as well!

Another win, this is an updated version of “Jack and the Beanstalk” told from the giants side of things. He is selling instructions and items needed to catch little boys to eat! It leads through the steps of the story while he is trying to make Jack stay comfortable. There is a twist at the end showing Jack is more than the giant gives him credit for.

How to catch little boys and eat them by Lois Wickstrom- 3 out of 5 stars

Similar to the classic fairytale Jack and the Bean Stalk but with a twist. The clever giant devises a plan to catch a boy and eat him while advertising his method to other giants via an infomercial to make money. The giant’s plan was going as planned when the boy’s curiosity took him up the bean stalk. The first time was pure curiosity but the many times after was greed. The boy had stealing items from the giant’s house to make money. Since the boy was never caught, he felt comfortable returning to steal more. The giant revealed that he had set up the boy and he was trapped. The boys quick witts saved him in the end when he was able to convince the giant to let him go.
I was personally not a big fan of this book. I did like that the author kept some key items from the classic fairytale but I find it to be very greed driven. I don’t really think the message of the story was portrayed in a positive way.

Well, this was a weird retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk, with really not that much from the original story. This blue genie lives in the clouds via the stalk and likes to eat little boys. He tricks them because he says earth boys are lazy. Well, Jack climbs the stalk but our wits the genie thing, while stealing his stuff. Once he “got caught” they make a deal to help each other out. However, once again Jack outsmarts him to destroy the stalk but get rich at the same time. Did that sound like a weird summarization, well that is how I felt when I read it. This story to me made no sense, especially toward the end. The title and concept were just creepy, in this form. The illustrations were fine but no real message or point for a kid’s story.

The art in the book is beautiful, my favorite character is the giant, with his colors and facial features. This was an interesting take on Jack and the beanstalk. The giant wants to eat the kids but then on the other hand Jack is stealing his possessions, I think its a nice way to teach kids not to steal other’s things and not to talk to random giants.
