Murder on Oak Street (A South Shore Mystery #1) by I.M. Foster

This is the first book I’ve read by the author. Murder on Oak Street is the first book in A South Shore Mystery Series. The book had me hooked from the beginning.

Daniel loved his job and had a good woman by his side. Or so he thought. She left him standing at the altar. So he moves on and the first case that he gets doesn’t sit right with him. Seeing that it falls back on his desk about the time another murder happens makes him wonder if they’re connected. The quote I chose for Daniel is: “Then I’d say my guardian angel was working overtime.”

Highly recommended for Historical Crime lovers.

This historical fiction book focuses on a murder mystery. The language throughout is a perfect example of what you would imagine 1904 to sound like, replete with surprises. The author did a masterful job of researching the time period to make it accurate and plausible. Go on a journey that will leave you second guessing until the end. Very enjoyable!

I’m always looking for mysteries and “who done it’s” that are engaging and don’t get bogged down and boring in the middle, the historical aspect was definitely a plus, and Murder on Oak Street absolutely fit the bill. This book has lots of drama, suspense, and misconceptions that pull you in and doesn’t let go until the end albeit reluctantly as I found myself wishing for more. Murder on Oak Street is ultimately an investigation within an investigation as a previous reviewer stated, and I enjoyed every minute of it. If you like historical, crime, mysteries you should definitely give this a try and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Murder on Oak Street by I.M. Foster is an intense ride of a murder mystery. It follows Dr. Daniel O’Halleran as he tries to untangle the webs of intrigue surrounding the deaths of two wealthy and influential men which may, or may not, be connected. The long list of suspects are full of secerts, lies, and scandal. It’s cleverly written, well-paced, and full of colorful characters. Foster had created a wonderful story with enough twists to rival Knives Out. Happy sleuthing!

Loved the corner POV for a cozy

I enjoyed this cozy mystery. Very different from other cozy mysteries I have read. I loved that it was from the point of view of the Corners’ and Detectives’. I want to read the next book in the series and found out what comes of the romances that happened. I wasn’t expecting who the killer was. Most of characters were likable.

Murder on Oak Street ⭐️⭐️⭐⭐️ Book Review

Meet the Author: I.M. Foster is the pen name Inez Foster uses to write her South Shore Mystery series. Inez also writes historical romances under the pseudonym Andrea Matthews. Inez is a historian and librarian who loves to read and write and search around for her roots, genealogically speaking. Most of her ideas come to her while doing casual research or digging into her family history.

Reader’s Thoughts: Murder on Oak Street is the first book in the South Shore Mystery series. It is a historical mystery full of suspense, drama, and murder. This was my first time reading a book by I.M. Foster. At first, with the slow start and the old dialect, I just couldn’t get roped in. I had to keep putting the book down. However, I really wanted to know what was going to happen so I had to keep coming back. Once I got past this I couldn’t put the book down. I found myself consistently trying to crack the murder. The characters within Murder on Oak Street are realistic and believable. The vivid storytelling and world building allows you to feel right alongside the characters on this who-dun-it journey. Despite the slow start and the dialect I would not hesitate to recommend this book to a friend. I would definitely take the time to read another book by Foster in the near future.

As a fan of murder mysteries, I had to give this book a read when I saw it at the local library. I am so glad that I did. Wow was this a whodunit book. There were so many plot twists and turns that I was constantly changing my guess as to who the murderer was. I was wrong in the end. This book reminded me of a lot of Agatha Christie books. She is one of my favorite authors, so I loved how the author weaved the details into the story. I would highly suggest reading this book.

A little slow to start, but once you get into the meat and potatoes of this classic “whodunit” you will find out nothing has an obvious answer at first. The historical setting may be what slowed me down, as I am not a huge fan of older style writings but I was able to stay interested, throughout. I liked the believable characters and although I am unsure of the historical accuracy, it was easy to follow. The story follows Daniel O’Halleran, a coroner in 1904 New York. Daniel is struggling in both career and the romance department, and decides he needs a change. Taking on a new position in Long Island, he is happy with the change of pace and slower lifestyle it brings. That is, until he is provided an old case to review. The dialogue and plot flows smoothly, if you are into historical fiction, and it was a nice change of pace from what I usually read. I will check out other books by this author, and would recommend it to others.

This was on mystery that I was so absorbed in I forgot to eat, sleep or do anything but finish the story. Needless to say this storyline was gripping. The characters are well developed and the plot was really interesting with many twists and turns. I absolutely loved the author’s writing style and look forward to many more by this author! A perfect example of a riveting story with a mysterious bent!

I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery and how everything intertwines. I suspected the culprit, but did not have the whole thing figured out, so it was a great surprise to connect everything together. The author does a great job in developing each character and keeping them true to their nature, which was great. The antagonists are also well developed and realistic. I could picture each character, along with the various locations clearly and it was enjoyable to follow them along on the journey. I couldn’t put the book down until it was done! Now I want more!

Murder on Oak Street ( A South Shore Mystery Book 1) by I.M. Foster. I LOVED this book and can’t wait for the next one. Its the story of Daniel O’Halleran who is a coroner’s physician. He feels like no one takes him seriously and they are always pushing him to hurry up and push cases through. On top of not being super happy with his job his fiancee stood him up at the altar so he makes the hard decision to pack up and move on. He moves to Long Island from New York and accepts a coroner’s assistant position. The boss tells him not to expect anything like the amount of cases in New York here. His first case just happens to be one of is very first cases in New York that he had to hurry up and pass on and where his feeling that something was not right. Will Daniel be able to solve this old case and prove to himself especially that he was right all along. I loved this book and if you love mysteries you will too!

It took me a while to get into this book, as I felt it started off a little slowly. But, once the pace and story picked up, I really enjoyed Murder on Oak Street! I. M. Foster was a first time author for me, but she created such a realistic setting with her vivid storytelling and great world building. The characters were well-developed, realistic, and there were a variety of different characters, each with his or her own story. Murder on Oak Street has it all! Murder, drama, mystery, and lots of twists and turns! I found myself attempting to solve the murder right along with everyone! Overall, this is a great read for fans of historical fiction, mystery, and crime! I look forward to reading more by I. M. Foster.

This was a great historical mystery. The writing was fantastic. I was instantly transported right into this book. I was trying to solve the mystery as if I was an investigator in the story. I couldn’t put this down. I literally read it in one sitting. If you are into historical fiction and mysteries, Murder on Oak St is it. The characters and story is very well written. Daniel is frustrated with his job working as a coroner’s physician in 1904 New York. After two years at his job the authorities have no interest in listening to his findings and he sees no future working there. Then his fiancée decides on their wedding day to call off their wedding, so Daniel takes it as a sign that he needs a fresh start. He accepts a job offer in Patchogue as assistant to their local coroner.

Daniel is barely in Patchogue a month when Kathleen, an attractive librarian, asks him to look into a murder that took place in New York two years ago. Daniel agrees to help her because it just happened to be a case that he worked on, and he was never happy with the verdict in the case. When a murder occurs in the peaceful little village Daniel cannot help but feel that the two cases are somehow linked.

I absolutely adored this historical mystery. It was impossible to put down and I found myself trying to solve the mystery along with the characters. The writing was superb, and the author did a fantastic job of bringing the characters and story to life. I anxiously await book two!

Murder On Oak Street is the first book in the South Shore Mystery series by I. M. Foster. This is a historical mystery that has former New York coroner, Daniel O’Halleran moving to the small town of Patchogue and investigating his first mystery. He approached to investigate a two-year-old mystery that leads him to investigate a second more current mystery. I found this book very engaging and I really enjoyed the character of Daniel. I also enjoyed all the twists. The book has a bit of a slow start but really starts to pick up and becomes quite the page-turner. This is a great book for mystery and/or historical fiction fans.

This is the first murder mystery book that I have ever read. I was surprised by the murder I was following. I had thought it was the one I started off reading then the story took a turn, and it ended up connected. I surprised myself by being able to read this one because of the old writing but I pushed through it. I wanted to see who really committed the murder then I couldn’t put it down. If you are ready for a murder mystery then this is the book for you, I really hope the author gives us more to the story to find out about the love stories that are brewing.

This was a really good book! While the mystery was fairly predictable in my opinion, it was well written and enthralling enough to catch my attention and hold it. I enjoyed the characters and I felt like the author did a good job keeping it historically accurate while also making the book easy to read. It didn’t feel like a quick read to me, but nevertheless I still enjoyed it and will definitely be checking out more books from this author in the future!

Murder on Oak Street is book one in the A South Shore Mystery Series. I truly enjoyed reading this Historical Mystery that once I started reading I had a hard time putting it down. I’m fairly new to this author but I’m definitely going to check out what other books they have written. This is a fast paced story that is packed with action, suspense, drama and so much. The twists and turns had me turning the pages trying to figure out what was going to happen next. What will happen when old files are open and new murder happens Are they both somehow connected? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I don’t want to give away anything. I think its better enjoyed going in not knowing what is going to happen. I look forward to reading more from this Author.

This book is a ride and is definitely not long enough. Even though it is set in 1904 New York, Daniel O’Halleran, a coroner’s physician, proves to be a relatable character, nonetheless. It is not hard to slip right into the mind of Daniel and experience the plot right along with him. You will be just as surprised as he is with the twists and turns this story takes. It definitely has all the elements that a good mystery should include. I had never read any work by this author before I picked up this book, but it will not be the last. Even if you don’t usually pick up a mystery, I would suggest giving this book a try. I will be eagerly awaiting the second book!

I enjoyed reading this mystery. This is a shorter story that packs a lot of mystery. This is my first book by this author which I look forward to reading more from in the future. This is a story that takes place during the 1900s. Daniel is looking into a mystery in his spare time until a second murder happens. Now he is wondering if they are both connected. He is a great character, strong and kept the story engaging. He brought so much to the story. This is a fast paced story that is both entertaining and easy to read. I read this book in one sitting and enjoyed the twists and turns. You don’t want to miss what happens in this story. I highly recommend this book.

Murder on Oak Street seems to be a typical who dun it? Well that is till you get into it. Reality it’s an investigation within an investigation. The author keeps you guessing, especially when you think it’s about one death yet about 40% of the way through the meat of the story happens. It gives me Agatha Christie vibes. Though I’ll be honest I struggled at the beginning. I couldn’t stay interested but I pushed on. Once I start a book I do everything in my power to see it through. The author kept me invested as it went on.
Dr. Daniel O’Halleran just recently transferred to this Long Island town, needing a change of scenery. Little did he realize a case that he worked on two years prior that left him unsettled would be coming right back to the forefront. This was his chance to get it right. But when Thomas Brissedon is found dead he’s tasked with being the lead to find the answers. Unfortunately he feels strongly that Cornelius Desmond’s demise is connected.
So now we circle back to who dun it?
Was it Colin Brissedon? Thomas’ son who was promiscuous and an uncontrolled gambler.
Was it Patrick Desmond? Thomas’ troubled stepson who strongly believes Thomas had something to do with his father’s death?
Was it Jeremy Radcliffe? Nephew of the deceased who is a drunkard and just as promiscuous as Colin.
Was it Kathleen Brissedon? Thomas’ daughter who is a kind and gentle soul, who loves her father unconditionally.
That’s just a few of the prime suspects, now who do you think it is?
If you like murder mystery books then jump in and decide who you think brought Thomas to his demise. The author’s witty take in the novel makes it a worthwhile leap to take.

I didn’t know what to expect from this book, but I thought it sounded interesting, so I gave it a shot. The author is a historian, so the historical aspects are done well. Unfortunately, I had difficulty sticking with the book, as the story felt like it was dragging in some places. I found myself wanting to skim through to get to the more intriguing parts.
This book was not a great fit for me, but if you are a fan of historical mysteries, this will likely be a must-read to put on your TBR.

I really enjoyed this book. This is a new to me author and I really liked her writing style, I found it to be really engaging and my interest was definitely kept from beginning to end. I love historical reads and a do love a good murder mystery so thought I would give this book a go and I’m so glad I did. Daniel was a great character to read about – I really liked him. The time period and setting for the story was really great, I’ve not read many historical novels set in New York.
Overall this was a gripping read and one that I would highly recommend to other readers who enjoy a good murder mystery!

Murder on Oak Street is a historical crime novel set in 1904 New York. We follow Dr. Daniel O’Halleran, a Coroner’s Physician who is fed up with the politics of the job. When he is left at the altar on his wedding day, on opportunity to work on Long Island is just what Daniel needs.
When Dr. O’Halleran is presented with a case by a young woman; he realizes it has connections to his last case in New York City. A murder happens not long after he arrives. Daniel investigates the house full of family members and learns that not everyone is as they’re portrayed.
This book is full of twists and turns and the writer had me guessing from beginning to the end. The details in this book make you feel as if you’re investigating along with Daniel. Murder on Oak Street is the first in the South Shore Mystery series, and I look forward to reading the next book.

Suspenseful and intriguing
There are plenty of twists and turns in this historical mystery. Daniel O’Halleran is an easy character to connect with and the cases kept my interest until the end. I’ve really enjoyed this historical crime story. It is a story that grips you from the beginning and doesn’t let go. I loved the main character Daniel. He’s a very smart determined man and when he senses something is wrong he is determined to not let anything stand in his way of the truth.

Daniel is a coroners physician. He is fed up of people not taking him seriously and his opinions not counting. He also doesn’t like the way that murders are swept under the carpet and not investigated. The final straw comes when he is left at the alter. Taking this as his sign he leaves New York and heads to Long Island.

This could be just the change he needs. A slower pace and a job where he is taken seriously. However the pace changes when he is asked to investigate a case from 2 years ago and when there is links between this case and his first case in New York Daniel starts to wonder if they were committed by the same person.
Could there be a serial killer out there or is it just coincidence? When another murder happens Daniel is in a race against time to solve this case.

This story is gripping, full of twists and turns, danger and mystery. I love how the author incorporates history and themes of the era which really brings the story a sense of reality.

Set in 1904, Daniel O’Halleran just keeps taking hits. It’s time for a change for himself. He’s always had a knack for investigation and when he starts looking at an old case, he soon realizes that this was his very first case.

Daniel O’Halleran is a coroners physician in 1904 New York. He is dissatisfied in his job and feels no one takes him seriously – they’re always rushing his work, hoping to get more cases “solved” by pushing answers through quickly. In the midst of his unhappiness at work, he gets stood up at the altar by his fiancee and decides he has finally been given enough signs – it’s time to move on from here.

Soon, he accepts a coroners assistant position in Long Island for a change. Daniel’s new boss warns him life is much slower in Long Island than in New York, but he’s happy for a new routine and having time to give answers. Before he even gets an opportunity to settle into that new routine, the local librarian suggests Daniel check out a local two year old murder case. In a twist of fate, it turns out to be the first case he had ever worked on and the first one to ever make him feel something was wrong.

Excellent descriptions, characters, suspense, dialogue, and sticking to era appropriate reactions. Wonderfully written, enjoyable historical mystery. Highly recommend!

This book is by an author I hadn’t heard of but the storyline sounded interesting so I decided to give it a go. This is a historical murder mystery novel which only adds to the intrigue and takes you back to a time and place where things were done differently.

Daniel is fed up with his current role in the city, I mean what’s the point of submitting your findings as coroner if they will just be brushed under the rug in favor of a quicker outcome. So 2 years down the road with many unsatisfactory cases, when Daniel is left at the altar he finally decides that he needs to shake things up a bit. So he takes up a new coroner job on Long Island and it doesn’t take long for the very first case he worked to come back for a visit when the local librarian brings it up. Daniel is eager to once and for all solve the case that has puzzled him for years. Will he be able to solve the case and catch the killer? Or will he bring more death to Long Island by poking a sleeping giant?

This book was very intriguing and I did enjoy reading it. At times it was a bit slow for my taste but that is to be expected in a historical plot line. Back then they took their time with everything. The characters were well thought out, the story itself was interesting, and the historical aspects were on point. If you like historical fiction mixed with some murder mystery whodunnit then you should definitely give this book a try. You may find this one is right up your alley!

This book, to say it was good, would by far be an understatement! I was amazed and full of intrigue as I read. I was left in suspense, I loved the author’s way of writing, and the historical mystery that took place.

I love mysteries. I grew up swearing I was going to be the next Sherlock Holmes SO of course this book greatly appealed to me. The more I dived in, the more I wanted to know. A mystery that even I could not put together-and I am quite good at those things. I was intrigued all the way through. I enjoyed the build up of the story very well and could not get enough. Great characters and suspenseful writing. Nothing was what it seemed. I found the read thrilling, and cannot wait for book 2! Freaking loved it!

Wonderful read, and not one to be passed up for any reason. Seriously! A must read book and author! Needless to say this is a high recommendation from me, if not a high priority to be read book and author!
