Okay for starters, the map *chefs kiss* love that, I like the meaning for the different words/phrases. I’m not a historical type. But the retelling of Gilgamesh, the women in his life. Just absolutely amazing!! If you are into mythical legends or beings, this is one you definitely need to pick up. It gives a whole different perspective!

I decided to pick this book up because of the college course I took on Mythology. This is my first read from this author but is not my last. I will say that I liked how this was written more so than the actual Epic of Gilgamesh. Only because dang was that hard for me to comprehend. The difference between the two is wonderful and to see it written as more of the male to male romance you assume when reading the original is breathtaking.

This is the first time I have read anything from this author. I really like the cover of the book, however I did have a hard time getting into the story itself. This is definitely a fantasy book with some romance. I honestly just really wasn’t into it at all. I think the only part that I liked really was when I first started reading it and it mentioned that Enkidu was to be raised by wolves and so I was getting into it but then I started reading about King Gilgamesh and how he wanted to be remembered. I feel like I need to restart the book and try to go to the end of the book. Hopefully, I can edit this review later with a completed reread of the book.

I was locked into the story from the first sentence. Like many others I’ve never read The Epics of Gilgamesh so I didn’t know what to expect. However, it was an amazing adventure. This is definitely a story for adults. There are trigger warmers in the beginning of the book so definitely take a look at that before you embark on this journey.
The author did a wonderful job with this retelling. You really get to understand the heart and soul of Gilgamesh and Enkidu. I appreciated the politics and the the tactics it took to rule. If you enjoy mythology, fantasy, and epic tales of history you’ll definitely enjoy this one.

The detailing in the book was good. I personally feel like the the writing style in this book could improve some. I felt like the book was all over the place.

King Gilgamesh is the leader of the great city of Uruk, he is God touched and almost invincible and has grand dreams for his future, he wants to rule all the lands between the waters and have his name remembered for all time for his deeds, however, this does mean that he has to create a carefully crafted image and maintain it. Enkidu is a man with no past who wakes up in the wilds and learns its lessons and all it has to teach him, until one day when he is given food by a woman and has to leave and fulfil his duty to the Gods.

King Gilgamesh has more than proven his might and ability to build and maintain the jewel of the land and his home city alongside his beautiful and fierce Queen, but she feels that he is not living in the present enough and works with the Gods to bring balance to King Gilgamesh and this is where he meets Enkidu, although their first meeting does not go quite as planned. As the days pass and King Gilgamesh has to deal with disruptive Kings, skirmishes on the borders and the lingering threats from Gods and Goddesses alike, he is also both frustrated and intrigued by the new addition to his household while also striving to preserve that which he has built both physically and metaphorically.

Behind the scenes though, a Goddess feels spurned and that her plans are not coming to fruition, and this will not do, but will it be the Goddess, King Gilgamesh, or another player in the game who will succeed and gain everything their hearts desire? This is a retelling of a famous legend where court intrigue can both help and hinder lives, while also twisting them in this epic with hints of romance within.

This book started off strong with a war and you get to see a bit of the personality of the main character. He seems to have everything but he isn’t happy and wants more. He wants a legacy left behind that will have stories be told and songs sung long after he is gone. The gods want him to be happy and fulfilled so they send Enkidu to fill that void. Then, there is the goddess Inanna that wants to rule Gilgamesh’s kingdom. She has plans all set up until Enkidu comes into the picture. Will she get the throne or will Gilgamesh rule with Enkidu by his side? Before picking up this book I had heard of Gilgamesh in name only. All the stories and mythologies have always fascinated me but his story is not one that I have read. After reading this retelling I want nothing more than to read what inspired the author into writing this story.

I’ve never read the story of Gilgamesh so I wasn’t sure what to expect but this was a great story. Gilgamesh is a story about a part mortal part God who lives in a city with a palace and wives and many children, he leads a army who is strong and capable and feared by many. This however is not enough and Gilgamesh is set on leaving a legacy for all to remember and cant seem to find happiness with what he already has. The gods want him to find happiness and balance so Enkidu was made to be Gilgameshs other half. Enkidu was raised by wolves has no want of a legacy of his own only to fulfill his purpose. The moment when Gilgamesh and Enkidu touch is the moment a beautiful passionate relationship is born.
The lead up to develop these two characters is definitely a slow burn and is not for everyone, but the character development was excellent.
This story has several different relationship themes including mm mf ff and there are a few trigger warnings that should be heeded. There’s also several definitions in the beginning that are helpful to check prior to reading.

I had previously read one other book by this author and enjoyed it so much that I grabbed this one up without a second thought. The cover is gorgeously intriguing which pulled me in even further. By the time I read the synopsis I was already making room for it on my shelf. The author did an astounding job of weaving the historical world perfectly with romantic fantasy, which I feel is an incredibly difficult task. I appreciate the fact that they included content warnings at the beginning so that no one is caught off guard. Something else that I absolutely love is that they included not only a glossary but a map to make it a little easier imagining the world as they wrote it. Even if you aren’t familiar with The Epic of Gilgamesh, this book will still blow you away. It starts off a little slow but definitely speeds up into more action and spice. I highly recommend picking up this first book The Legacy of Gilgamesh series because I have a feeling the second book is going to be a knockout!

The cover of this book caught me, and I love it. Now for the story part. I have never heard the story of Gilgamesh and this is to be a retelling or basically based off his story. I felt it was slow at first and it is very much into world building (which I love btw). Gilgamesh is the king of Uruk, has mortal and god blood and because of this he is very powerful, strong, and wins all the time. Then you have Enkidu who was created by the Gods. I wasn’t very fond of Inanna but I also felt that there should have been more about her and maybe I would of liked her just a little although in my book she wasn’t a good person. Maybe just more to her story. Shamat is an awesome character and I love her!!

I haven’t ever read a book by Nicole Bailey before but I loved how she told this story and am actively seeking out others of hers as well. I also cant wait to read book 2!!

This is a retelling of The Epic of Gilgamesh by Nicole Bailey. I love almost everything the author has written but I have an indifferent feeling about this book. I neither liked nor disliked it.

The world-building is wonderful, and the characters are described amazing as well. I felt so much of this book was repetitive – this was probably my main issue with the book. I wanted to love the story, but I just couldn’t. The speed of the book changes a few times, which has some to do with my inability to love it. The book starts off pretty energetic with the War but dies down TREMENDOUSLY after the second, maybe third chapter. It does not speed back up until the last 10% of the book.

The book starts off following Gilgamesh, who is 2/3 God, and the King of Uruk. He is also insanely arrogant, selfish, blood-thirsty, and overly obessed with crafting a legacy that withstands time. The Gods create Enkidu, who is a wild man but also God blessed. Gilgamesh now finds himself in a TRUE competition with someone who is not so easily beat. Enkidu was my FAVORITE character and overall aspect of this book.

This book is a part of a duology, and it DOES end on a cliffhanger. I do look forward to reading book two in hopes it is better than this one.

This is the first book in the the Legacy of Gilgamesh series. This was really a great start to the series. It is full of action, adventure, romance, mythology, god and goddesses all woven together to create a very unique and captivating story.
The author has done a great job of mixing historical elements into the fantasy and mythology which for me really brings the characters to life.
The story was captivating from the first page and I couldn’t put it down. The ending has definately set you up for the next book which I am egar to read to carry on the adventure.
I was unfamiliar with the stories of Gilgamesh. To be he has a lot of responsibility and huge sense of duty but he is also obsessed with leaving a legacy and wanting the be remembered to the point where he is unable to appreciate what he has achieved and the people around him.
When Enkidu enters his life it becomes role to help him see this and also to bring him down and hble him a little. What will happen as Gilgamesh and Enkidu get closer. Will Gilgamesh find what he was missing in this stranger that became a friend.
This is a romance as well as we see Gilgamesh’s feelings change for Enkidu and we leave about his wife’s partners. Both Gilgamesh and his wife love each other but you can tell it’s mainly in a friendship. They complement each other and they work well as a team and the fact they allow each other to find romance else where makes them stronger in my opinion.
This story was complex but very captivating and I ended up getting hooked into their story and their lives.

This book was an interesting read. I chose this book based off of the cover alone. I have found that I enjoy doing this sometimes. That said, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I feel that the author took the time to really give the reader the understanding of the world the characters live in. I feel that it is a very quick read because of the flow of the story line. There aren’t any parts where it just lags. I kept turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. It has this whole fantasy side to the book along with a romance. It has a lot of action in this book as well. It was not what I was expecting. The vivid descriptions of the setting and the characters allowed for me to really picture everything. It also gave me a sense of being, meaning I felt like since I could picture it so well in my head; I was actually there seeing everything. I got lost in this book, just set away to a different time and place. I really am looking forward to reading more in this series.

This is the first installment in the Legacy of Gilgamesh series, and the first I have picked up by this author. Ancient myth and lore fascinates me and this book is a fabulous retelling of the very first one. Even readers who are unfamiliar with the Gilgamesh story would enjoy reading this book. It’s imaginative, captivating, and very well-written. The characters jump off of the page and pull you right down into their world. There is a glorious glossary included so don’t worry about knowing the epic tale in too much detail as you can learn on the journey. I loved getting lost in this tale, and I will absolutely grab up the next one!

** Make sure to read content warnings and Authors notes before reading **

I have never read The Epic of Gilgamesh, so not having read that I did enter this story blind, due to this being a retelling. I am glad the author added a glossary on what some of the words mean, without it, I would have been confused.
This story was very well written, along with the character/world-building.

I wanted to like this story, however I just couldn’t get into it. I have read other fantasies that I loved and was hoping to add this one to that collection. Why couldn’t I get into it? I felt there wasn’t enough action.

It started off great and grabbed my attention right away with the war. It gave great insight to how Gilgamesh’s character is. How he is power-hungry and wants to make a name for himself. He did care for those in his inner circle and protected his family, but is ruthless.

After the first chapter, the war, it slowed down… A LOT. It became more of a slow burn and focused on character/world-building. While this is great for some, it just wasn’t my cup of tea. Even the fight with Enkidu wasn’t much to grab my attention back. It was also love at first sight (or touch in their case).

There were other moments where I thought it was going to pick back up again, but it was never enough to grab my attention until about 80% into it.

I just didn’t vibe with it. I am sure someone who has read The Epic of Gilgamesh might be able to enjoy this story to its fullest potential, and of course, if you are more into character/world-building.

This book does end with a cliffhanger, but I don’t think I will be getting the second book in this series.

Gilgamesh is the king of Uruk. His ambition is ceaseless even though he has created an empire and is part God. He feels indestructible and above his human counterparts. Enkidu is a man created by the Gods with no past. He has grown up with the wolves in the forest and has understood the ways of nature. Will Enkidu be exactly what Gilgamesh needs?

The beginning of this story is very slow and takes a long time to detail Gilgamesh and Enkidu. I have not read the original tales of Gilgamesh, but I do feel like it was written with an older time frame in mind. It feels like it can be a timeless tale. Enkidu reminds me of Mowgli, from The Jungle Book, with him being raised by wolves and then going to the humans and learning their ways after meeting a female in the forest. It does a good job of showing how these men will both grow and change together. The ending has a major cliffhanger so be prepared to read the next book.

This is a phenomenal start to an epic duology in The Legacy of Gilgamesh Books. I’ll admit…I was lured in by the cover and Bailey hooked me with her vivid storytelling and complex characters. This is a retelling of the tale of Gilgamesh and Bailey has put her own spin on the story. This is a tale teeming with romance, love, lust, twists, turns, betrayal, and so much more. You will have a hard time putting this down once you pick it up, but understand that this is a hefty undertaking. The worlds and characters that Bailey builds are no light affair and you will need time and energy to give to reading this story. It is slow in parts but honestly that is to be expected in such a large undertaking…you can’t have action every second…there has to be world-building and character development somewhere! I really do recommend picking this up if you are looking for something to occupy you for awhile. This would be a fantastic read in the car or a vacation read. I can’t wait for Book 2!

In the Midst of Omens is set in a period of time where the Gods are prevalent. The main character is part God and the king of Uruk. He wants to leave an impact and be remembered after his death which has caused him to seek the future and not appreciate the present until his God mother and first wife pray for someone to help him see what he is missing while pursuing a change to his fate. The story is about finding your purpose, seeing and appreciating the present including what you already have, and admitting love for another. Have you ever just chosen to read a book just by its cover? Well for me this is one of those times. It didn’t pan out as I hoped but that’s okay. In the Midst of Omens has a cover the lures a reader in. It’s just a matter if this is your type of story or not. In my case it wasn’t but that doesn’t mean it was bad. The author put together a well written story of a man drunk on power. A goddess wanting to bring him down. And another man who is waiting in the wings for his calling. Brought together in a bit of a triangle but what’s the saying two’s company 3’s a crowd.
Gilgamesh is drunk on power & ambition. Human to a fault though he possesses immortal powers that he inherited from his goddess mother. He needs an heir but 2 things stand in his way. They need immortal blood, that’s the law. As well as if he shows any of his children favoritism he may have sentenced them to death. Because the goddess Inanna would love nothing more than to destroy him. Why not through his children. She has plans for him.
So when wolf raised Enkidu has been called upon to help rein Gilgamesh in it brings on a whole nother wrath from Inanna, but it’s just what he needs.
What will be the end result?
How will Gilgamesh and Enkidu navigate the path they landed on together?
Premise for a wonderful story. If you like battle, revenge, god and goddess lore then this book is for you. I, on the other hand, am going to look into other books by this author because they tell stories rather well.

I liked that Gilgamesh had all these wives but when in the palace he told them that they didn’t need to consummate their marriage or even have children together. And I liked that though he was physically attracted to men he truly loved Shamhat, their marriage has everything but the sex. Gilgamesh’s characters grows, he stops worrying so much on the future and he tells everyone that it was Enkidu who killed Humbaba because he no longer cares about his legacy. I love when he’s ready to live in the moment. There’s Gods, friendship, action and romance, I recommend to all fantasy readers.

3 – 3.5 Stars

In the Midst of Omens is the first book in the Legacy of Gilgamesh series by Nicole Bailey. This is a fantasy based around the legendary character, Gilgamesh- which is what drew me to the story in the first place. Woven with mythology, historical details, action, adventure, drama, danger, intrigue, dynamic characters, passion, emotion, war, gore, loss, heartache, spice, MM romance, a polyamorous relationship, and more.
The story is highly original, as I have come to expect from Ms. Bailey- she has woven history and mythology together, given it her own unique spin, and delivered an intriguing adventure. As this all ends on a bit of a cliffhanger which is set to continue in the next instalment, Book #2 is already set to be quite dramatic.
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Nicole Bailey!

King Gilgamesh beats to his own drum, he is a man of power who has begun to have nightmares that have him feeling like things are about to change. He meets Enkidu and finds someone who is completely different than the others. The problem is during a time of war and change life can veer in a different direction in a heart beat.

This was entertaining, the pace was fast and I thought the character of Gilgamesh was intriguing. I felt like we were placed into a story that was already developed so some of the characters, for me, I would have liked to know more about. I would be curious as to what happens next.

So this is my first read of this authors, I have done some looking into them and it seems as though recreating stores based on myth and lore in a sort of retelling is their things. That being said I had heard the name Gilgamesh before but didn’t know to much about him until I read this book and did some further research.

This turned out to be a really fun read, it’s a little slow going at first but I believe many good books start slow to really build the character and the world that everything’s taking place in. That’s exactly what this author did, built and built and built until you can’t put the book down because you’re ensnared. The relationships between our main character in this story and everyone he interacts with is so genuine and thought it makes everything feel so genuine not only that but it creates a sense of familiarity for the reader that helps move the story along seamlessly.

I read that that is going to be a duology but I do believe that with everything the authors given us so far it has the potential to be many more books that that, but I am truly excited to see where she takes us in the next book. The angst and slow burn of this book was ADDICTIVE, I couldn’t help but keep reading to see if one of the characters would finally give in, and i was not disappointed!

What an amazing re-imagining of the great story of Gilgamesh! I was absolutely glued to this book from page one and can’t wait to get my hands on the next one. Nicole Bailey does a divine job of making her characters feel real and her writing style is superb. I especially like the relationships between Gilgamesh and the people in his life. As someone who loves ancient worlds I am in love with how Bailey portrayed this one. This was truly a breath of fresh air! Such a wonderful story!

This book is a def read. Bailey’s writing style was perfect for this story. Sometimes the world building in stories will bore me, but this book was the opposite. She has such vivid descriptions I was able to imagine everything easily. Couldn’t this book down!
