Another young adult book that hits the spot. I loved this book from beginning to end, and it’s a message that everyone can relate to in someway.
Baxter went through the good and the bad like any kid does. Raised by a single mom and a dad who was no more than mystery he began to question the “what if.” From there A mysterious djinn, a bit of dark magic, adventure mixed with suspense, and some good friends take this story places you will not want to miss

A Dark and Gritty Djinn folklore that will keep you intrigued and entertained til the very end.

This book was simply fantastic and gives you a perspective on what happens if your wishes came true.

This story follows Bax who after receiving a purple ring said to be from his estranged father discovers an alternate world filled with magic, mayhem and pure evil.

So what does happen if your wishes are granted? Bad will soon discover there is evil mixed in this world and he will have to fight to put the Djinn back in its own world.

5/5 read that I recommend for any fans of YA, Fantasy and Folklore and Dark and twisty tales!

From Brick & Darkness is a must read book! When reading the premise I thought that it was going to take the standard genie path with three wishes and being careful what you wish for. This book is anything but the standard. Bax is relatable as a teenager and has respect for his single mom with issues at high school. The theme of being careful what you wish for is still there along with being thankful for what you have.

This was a book that certainly keeps you on your toes and teaches that not all things are as they seem. Bax finds a homeless man on his steps who gifts him a ring. Little does Bax know is that ring will lead to some of Bax’s deepest desires to come true in the most horrific way. This was a good story that led from desire and greed and to acceptance and love. I ejoyed seeing the characters grow and friendships formed. Bax, Jason, and Ashley are proof that you can always find friends in the most unexpected ways and they will always be with you. The ending was cute and had a solid conclusion but seemed rather dull after the excitement of the book. Overall it was a fun and suspenseful book.

The way this story starts out reminds me of Lord of the Rings and Aladdin. The djin of the ring manipulates Bax and his wishes, leading down a trail of mystery. This story takes coming-of-age to a darker and twists it to a modern approach. I enjoyed this YA magical realism story and you will too!

As a kid, I loved the Percy Jackson books. This book took me right back to the days where I would be engrossed in those books. The auth or pulls you right into the story, and every time I tried to put the book down, I couldn’t! It sucked me in so fast! I loved this book, and I’ll for sure be checking out more books by this author! I can’t stress enough how amazing this book was, I completely loved it!

I thoroughly enjoyed From Brick & Darkness. It’s a great twist on on a fairytale. Nothing is given for free. It all comes at cost. If you had the power to make everything happen that you’ve ever wanted, how tempting would it be to use it no matter the consequences? Most of us would struggle with that decision. This young adult book was page turning and any teen or adult can get lost in this book. Cannot wait to see what else this author puts out.

This book had me captivated from the first page! Wonderful coming of age novel! You will enjoy every second of Bax, his friends and their Janni (Genie)! The enchanting word play and vivid sensory details like “ bleach and fried-chicken air” that Sullivan uses, easily transport you into their world and for me made me remember things about High School I’ve long forgotten. The characters were so fun to get to know, Janni is so unique and adorable that he just melted my heart and also made me laugh. It also has the perfect amount of mystery and suspense to keep you guessing and itching to know more about Bax and the Djinn’s. Overall this book has everything you could ask for: a great story, enchanting characters, fantastical events, thrilling suspense, and a memorable moral. I can’t wait to read more of J.L Sullivan’s work. This has been one of the best books I have read in a while. Thank you!

Bax is like a lot of people. You always want to have something interesting happen in your life. Well, this does happen when he’s offered a ring by a mysterious purple eyed man. What he doesn’t realize is that because he accepted this ring, the interesting part was about to happen the way he didn’t. So much happens in this book, and I love it! Lesson was definitely learned.

Bax is a teenage boy who thinks his life is typically boring, that is until a strange man with purple eyes talks to him outside of his apartment building. The man offers Bax a ring claiming that it is for Bax’s estranged father. Bax, being curious, takes the ring. He shoves it into his pocket. Thinking the ring is just a gaudy piece of costume jewelry, he doesn’t think much about it. Bax ends up rubbing the purple jewel on the ring and an ugly creature appears before him.

The creature tells Bax it is a Janni which is a type of Djinn. Bax can’t believe his luck. His luck quickly turns when Janni is not what it seems. There is a darkness to the creature and the ring. Nothing is as it seems and Bax has to find out the hard way.

At first the book seems like a typical coming of age fantasy but it turns dark in an instant making it much more enjoyable to me. It was twisted and yet easy to read and relate to. I definitely recommend this book for YA and adults alike.

Baxter is a teen boy who has grown up poor and watched as his mother has worked hard to provide the necessities of life for them both. He cannot help but wonder how different life would have been if his father had been around and yearns for a relationship with him. Baxter spends his days either at school where he tries his best to fit in, or with his best friend Jason playing video games. Although content with his life, young Baxter cannot help but dream big and hope for something extraordinary to happen in his life. Little did he know that is exactly what would happen, but unfortunately not in quite the way he had expected.

When Baxter returns home one evening, he finds an old man with glowing purple eyes standing on his doorstep. The man creeps Baxter out but tells him that he has a ring that is intended to be a gift for Baxter’s father. Reluctantly, Baxter takes the ring thinking that perhaps it can be sold, and the money used to help his mother. When he starts having weird dreams about the ring, he realizes the ring might be worth keeping. When Baxter accidentally rubs the ring and produces a powerful dijin he feels that his dreams may finally come true. Although happy to have a dijin to fulfill his wishes, Baxter desires more and learns he can summon an Ifrit which is even more powerful than the dijin. Now all of Baxter’s wishes will become true but at what cost?

The Ifrit turns out to be a sinister demon that feeds on Baxter’s subconscious thoughts and will go to any length to make Baxter’s dreams and fantasies come true. Before long the Ifrit has left a trail of death and destruction in its wake. Baxter’s life is turned upside down as it all points to him. Now it is up to Baxter, Jason, and their friend Ashley to find a way to stop the Ifrit and banish it from their world forever. Will they have what it takes to stop Ifrit?

I loved this book and was drawn into the story from the first pages. I loved the character of Baxter and felt myself rooting for him as he struggled to fit in. I understood his desire to want more and loved the magic ring that could produce a dijin to help him fulfill his dreams. I found myself shaking my head as he unleashed the Ifrit and knew that nothing good would come of him being so greedy and wanting more power. I loved the characters of Jason and Ashley and admired how they stood beside their friend and helped him out even when times got tough. This book was well written with a great storyline. Not only did it take some twists and turns, but it had some hidden, underlying messages about power and greed. A fantastic read!

This is the first book by this author I have read and it was not disappointing. I have to admit it was not my usual go to genre but I did get drawn into the world created by this author. The story is well written and the world that the author created is unique. I was at the edge of my chair as I got deeper and deeper into the story. There was a just enough drama to draw me into the story and I liked how there was a bit of complexity to the story with the djinn not being what was expected. I will definitely be reading more from this author in future.

Wow, this is a great YA Fantasy book…I was not sure what to expect…but this book totally surprised me in a great way.

What truly happens when you want something to come true….you wish hard…and in turn find out it is not what is all seems? This happens to Bax…..when a shady character offers him a ring and links him to a Djinn. But when a wish leads to danger and intrigue and loved ones in danger…will Bax remain strong? Definitely pick up this book to find out.

I love the characters and the overall story. It really sucks you in from each turn of the page and I LOVE LOVE LOVE YA genre of book! So well done!!

J.L Sullivan crafted a unique story that blurs the lines of reality and fantasy. This book was so easy to read and kept me turning pages to devour more and more. All of the suspense and thrills kept me hooked, as well as the adventure (and genies!) that were in the mix. And as always, this story reinforces to “be careful what you wish for”.

Bax is a young lad in middle school who has a pretty ordinary life, he is the invincible kid at school and just flows along with existence, but he has always wanted something special to happen to him, something out of the ordinary, but nothing ever does!

One day, he is heading home after playing video games with his best friend and he is trying to beat his mum back home so he doesn’t get in trouble for staying out too late, but when he gets to his apartment building, there is someone waiting on the front steps. It appears to be a homeless man who is not in the best of health, apart from his glowing purple eyes, however, when he gives Bax a ring which is meant to be from his estranged dad, he takes it thinking if he figures it out, then maybe he will know something more about him.

Unbeknownst to Bax, he has just been given a ring with a Djinn in it and it calls to him through a dream, it tells Bax he can have everything his heart desires if he summons it, but the Ifrit, as it is named twists Bax’s subconscious fantasies and threatens, murders and manipulated the people around him instead.

All Bax now wants to do is to banish the Ifrit forever, but can he work out the how, when and where before the streak of crimes the Djinn is committing are linked back to Bax? This is a fantasy adventure where wishes are granted, but not in the expected way and it becomes a race against time to save the people he loves in this story which talks about choices, consequences and morality in a way everyone can understand while keeping it interesting and engrossing throughout.

First things first I learned that djinn meant genie, which I didn’t know when I picked the book up. After that things fall more firmly in place and begin to make a little more sense. This is a pretty fast paced YA book that pulls you in from the start and won’t let go, kind of like the Djinn.

Bax just wants something memorable to happen in his life so when an old man gives him a ring he takes it. This sets Bax on the journey of his life after he starts having dreams about a powerful djinn. As dreams become nightmares when an ifrit is unleashed upon the world and this demon feeds upon his subconscious. Now Bax must solve a puzzle to banish the ifrit forever. With a trail of crimes, destruction, and death that point back to Bax can he solve this puzzle and survive?

This is truly the age old tale of being careful what you wish for because oftentimes dreams can be worse than reality. This was a fantastic coming of age tale. It was fantastic to see the character development in Bax as he works to banish the ifrit. This was a fast paced book that certainly keeps you engaged and coming back to read it every time you have a free moment. Give this one a try even if it seems out of your wheelhouse, because it is definitely worth it.

From Brick & Darkness by J.L. Sullivan. This was a great young adult story but a little on the darker side. Its about Baxter Allen who is given a magic ring by an old man. The ring is actually from Baxter’s father who isn’t in the picture because he left them some time ago. When Baxter gets the ring his life changes completely. He enters into a very dark and twisted world. When he says certain names it causes Genies to appear and they offer him three wishes. What Baxter doesn’t realize is some of these wishes are going to make bad things happen and when they do he is terrified. The read has all the drama of real high school and throw in some magic, crazy genies and other supernatural happenings. I flew through this book.

Creative adventure
This was a thrilling original fantasy adventure. There’s action, drama and a teen whose curiosity bites him in the butt. Bax has his share of teen troubles but all that takes a turn when he finds a ring and brings into the world more than he bargained for.
I loved the writing and it would appeal to a wide range of audiences. It is a multilayered clean novel and covers the awkwardness that comes with navigating the high school scene balanced with the fantasy aspect. Totally recommend.

It is a great YA novel for those who like their stories a little dark and gritty. It was definitely a unique and modern spin on an ancient evil.
