Bax is a teenage boy who thinks his life is typically boring, that is until a strange man with purple eyes talks to him outside of his apartment building. The man offers Bax a ring claiming that it is for Bax’s estranged father. Bax, being curious, takes the ring. He shoves it into his pocket. Thinking the ring is just a gaudy piece of costume jewelry, he doesn’t think much about it. Bax ends up rubbing the purple jewel on the ring and an ugly creature appears before him.

The creature tells Bax it is a Janni which is a type of Djinn. Bax can’t believe his luck. His luck quickly turns when Janni is not what it seems. There is a darkness to the creature and the ring. Nothing is as it seems and Bax has to find out the hard way.

At first the book seems like a typical coming of age fantasy but it turns dark in an instant making it much more enjoyable to me. It was twisted and yet easy to read and relate to. I definitely recommend this book for YA and adults alike.
