Death & Mirrors (All Things Dark & Deadly Book 1) by SF Benson – Review by Rosanna Ingram

Death & Mirrors: All Things Dark & Deadly, Book OneDeath & Mirrors: All Things Dark & Deadly, Book One by S.F. Benson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Evaline is a necromancer and has dreams of being a great detective…so when a mysterious stranger shows up asking for her father’s help (which he refuses), she is determined to get to the bottom of what is going on. This leads her to the mirror world where Dr. Death’s reign is killing everything there and will soon begin spreading to London. Evaline is determined to stop them…but it requires finding the Firestone (a mythical artifact…no biggie, right?!?). With the help of her detective skills, necromancer skills, and some magic along the way, Evaline will work hard to stop Dr. Death before it is too late…will she be successful? (Hint: You have to read it to find out!)

I enjoyed this book. It follows the same storyline as Alice in Wonderland…but has witches, magic, and dead people. I found Evaline to be curious and I enjoyed following her on this adventure. It does end in a bit of a cliffhanger…so I will be looking forward to reading the next book to see what happens. Overall, a good story that I enjoyed reading.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love a story where I can root for the underdog and The Second Alpha Heir is that type of story. Nolan was scrawny and bullied by everyone. He was never meant to be the alpha but fate has other plans. Nolan trains to fulfill the role his brother left behind. We get to see the ups and downs of Nolan on his journey. He really is a protagonist worth rooting for. His book has an interesting plot and a nice slow-burn romance. It also has a very creatively built world. I really enjoyed this story.

This was a really entertaining and enjoyable young adult fantasy. The author does a great job with the character and the world building. It is a story that really grips the reader and drags them down into an alternative world where all is not what it seems.

I really love Evaline’s character. She is a very determined young woman who is set on her goals of becoming a detective even though everyone is against the idea she pushes on and doesn’t stop. When her father turns down a chance to solve a mystery to find an ancient artifact Evaline decides to accept the mission. This leads her into an alternate world where past curses and magic await to test her. With the help of her friend and love Delbert can she solve the mystery and find the ancient artefact? Can she stop the destruction of this alternate world before it affects her world? Or will the curses that are on her family prove too much for her to overcome?

This is a well written and intriguing Thriller that keeps you hooked from beginning to end. I found myself instantly connecting with this story and wanting to find out what was going to happen. The characters were great
They fit with the story so well and had an interesting connection between themselves.
This is a new author to me so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The book was well thought out and the characters clearly developed and it was a thoroughly enjoyable book. I will definitely be checking out the second book in the series.

This is a quick and easy YA paranormal story that can appeal to people of most ages. The story is quick to pick uo even if you haven’t read the previous books, although it would be my recommendation to read them in order. The characters are all likeable and believable. It is easy to imagine kids of this age doing and saying the same things. I thought the author did a great job of portraying the age range and connecting with a range of audiences. This is an easy to read and likeable series that any fan of the genre worked enjoy.

Levi (The Brothers of Creekside Ranch Book 1) by Edith Mackenzie – Review by Katie Matthews

LeviLevi by Edith Mackenzie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I absolutely loved this story! Whilst I love romance stories with the steamy scenes sometimes it is nice to read a clean romance story and this was 100% that! I loved getting to know the characters Levi and Bella (also known as Beccy) they certainly had a love hate relationship and I just loved them together! The story may have been a little predictable but I didn’t care because I was completely swept up in the blossoming romance between the two main characters (even if they didn’t want to admit it). I knew that Levi was going to be a big softy underneath that hardened exterior and I knew Bella would be the one to break down those barriers! I also loved all of the secondary characters and I’m very excited for each other brothers to get their own stories and Little Allie was just the sweetest! She’s definitely lucky with those big brothers to look out for her!
A wonderful read and one that I would highly recommend – I can’t wait for the next book! This was also a wonderful introduction to a new author!

Body Checked (Astoria Bay Thunder #2)Body Checked by C.J. Cartwright
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As I loved the first book in this series I was excited to meet more of the characters and this one was Bridger and Tia’s story and it didn’t disappoint! I loved the angst that the author created between these two, they definitely had chemistry and sparks flying but it definitely wasn’t love at first sight! I really liked that Bridger wasn’t quite what I expected and I really enjoyed getting to know him in this book. I personally loved the idea of him and Tia together and I was rooting for them the whole way through.
This story can easily be read as a standalone but there are crossover characters so I would recommend reading them in order – book 1 was also a great read!
I will definitely be looking forward to reading more from this author again in the future.

A delightfully charming and cheeky read for a pre-teen/tween. This is the third installment in this series and while this could be read as a standalone, I recommend reading from the beginning so you can thoroughly appreciate the characters and plot. I really enjoyed Dixon’s characters and the relatable predicaments they got themselves into. I think a lot of young girls will relate to the main character, Lauren. I really enjoyed this quick read and would recommend this book to any young kiddo who enjoys ghosts, friends, and dance.

Pursuit into Darkness (War of Destiny #2) by Theresa Van Spankeren

Another great read by the author. Pursuit into Darkness is the second book in the War of Destiny Series. It follows Julia, Adam, Samuel, and the rest of the group on their journey. You will need to read book 1 before this one.

Julia is now happy with Adam although she hasn’t forgotten what Samuel has done for her. When Valentino finds where they’re at they have to flee. She loses Adam in the battle as well as herself. She turns herself into the enemy and hurts her group. The quote I chose for Julia is: “You’re wrong, Samuel. Gregory has won, I’ve turned into him. I hurt . . . kill as easily as he had. You’re so good, Samuel . . . I’m so sorry you wasted all that time and effort on the likes of me. The voices said everyone’s deaths were my fault. My ability did not work because I really wanted them dead. Stay away from me, Samuel. Stay far away, I’m not good for you.”

Samuel is coming to terms that Julia is with Adam. Coming to terms with that is easier than not remembering a lot of what has happened. That couldn’t be the worst thing that happens to him, right? You could be wrong and now he’s got to learn to trust Julia again. The quote I chose for Samuel is: “Nay. He would not say a word about it to me. Did he tell you anything?”

Highly recommended for Vampire Paranormal lovers.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was really intrigued by the synopsis for this book and I wasn’t sure that I was going to enjoy but I loved that I was pleasantly surprised. The story was really easy to follow and I really liked the characters. When I first started the story I actually wasn’t aware it wasn’t the first book in the series and I think although I would have had a better understanding of some of the things going on had I read the previous two books I was quite happy reading it as a standalone however I would like to read the first two also as this was a great read. The characters were really likeable and relatable – I think it was easy to imagine yourself as a student at the ballet school.
I think this would definitely be a great series for younger readers but I also really enjoyed it as an adult!

Lost Soul (War of Destiny #1) by Theresa Van Spankeren

This is the first book I’ve read by the author. Lost Soul is the first book in the War of Destiny Series. I recommend getting all the books available because it will be hard to put it down. I didn’t want to stop and I loved this book.

Julianna (aka Julia aka Sunshine) grows up close with Adam, her brother and her sister. When the time comes for her to be married off she is. Then her husband becomes violent and she is a victim of abuse. She has a baby, but it’s not the son he wants. She is found by a vampire, but will she want that? The quote I chose for Julia is: “Stop calling me Sunshine, Sammy. And yes, I can stand on my own. Though I could use some help walking.”

Samuel is a friend of Julia’s brother-in-law. Her younger sister is worried for her and the baby. Can Samuel help her? Will he be able to save her in time? Will he be able to gain her trust and help her learn to love again? The quote I chose for Samuel is: “Do not worry, Julia. He’s probably killed many an innocent during his robberies.”

Highly recommended for Vampire Paranormal lovers.

Body Checked: A Frenemies-to-Lovers Hockey Romance (Astoria Bay Thunder #2) by CJ Cartwright

This is another great read by the author. So far both books I’ve read in the Astoria Bay Thunder Series are my favorite. If you’ve read book 1 the beginning will make sense. If you didn’t it’s okay you can always go back and read it. This is a standalone.

Bridger is the playboy of the group. Meeting Tia and having a manager that requires a background check and an NDA is hard. He likes Tia, but isn’t sure what she wants from him. Can he win her over? The quote I chose for Bridger is: “Tia. Babe. You’re safe. I will not hurt you. I’m going to fall asleep next to you and probably dream of your gorgeous p**** and then we’re going to wake up and keep working on the photoshoot. You can relax.”

Tia doesn’t expect to find herself falling for Bridger, but she does. She doesn’t think her bestie knows what she’s doing asking her to be an assistant. She doesn’t know what she’s gotten herself into. Can she let her guard down for him? The quote I chose for Tia is: “Rule #1 is the most important rule. You can’t fall in love with me. There can be absolutely no feelings. Do you understand me?”

Highly recommended for Contemporary Romance lovers.

Body Checked (Astoria Bay Thunder Book 2) by CJ Cartwright. This is the second book in the Astoria Bay Thunder series and I loved it. Its the story of Bridger who is a playboy hockey player. Sounds like a dream huh! When he meets Tia who is put in charge of their photo shoot. Their attraction is immediate. Tia knows Bridger’s reputation and knows that he’s nothing but a good time. His reputation is so bad that he is about to get in trouble with the team so he’s trying to calm down a bit but he can’t control his attraction to Tia. They finally agree on a wild weekend but no feelings. What Bridger doesn’t account for is he’s obsessed with Tia. He can’t get her off his mind. He even thinks maybe she is the one. When Tia’s past comes back to haunt her and even risks Bridger’s place on the team will they continue to work and be together or will they explode just like their chemistry? Be prepared to not put this book down until your are finished!

Love is Worth Fighting for (The Meraki Series Book 3) by Effie Kammenou. This is such a good frenemies romance. It’s Krystina’s story and she is beating herself up for falling in love with the boy who has been a pain in her butt for years. Loukas (Luke) has been in love with Krystina for as long as he remember. Krystina writes a blog and all she wants to do is travel the world and promote her blog and become famous on Instagram. With Luke following her all around (he’s working with her) its not turning out as fun as she thought. He’s always been right under her feet driving her crazy. As they spend more and more time together and she sees him helping her in her search for her grandfather she sees a new side of him. Will they be able to make a relationship work and will she be able to get the answers she needs about her grandfather? This is one of my favorites in the series!

Shake Down (First Coast Thriller Book 1) by Armand Rosamilia – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Shake Down (First Coast Thriller Series)Shake Down by Armand Rosamilia
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed this gripping crime thriller, which had me hooked from start to finish. The main character, Clayton Conway is an ex-cop who has made some mistakes and is now working at a repo company. Clayton is concentrating on raising his daughter and keeping friendly with her mother, his ex-wife. He’s renting a small apartment over a bar in Jacksonville Beach, and is happy if he makes enough money to pay his rent. Thinking he had left his dangerous life behind him, along with being a cop, Clayton gets mixed up with the Orenato Cartel, when one of their speedboats is repossessed.
Clayton realises that it’s not just him who’s in danger but also his family and friends, and he’s determined to protect them, as long as his own weaknesses don’t get the better of him, again. Full of drama and suspense this was an entertaining and engaging read, with a great main character in Clayton, who’s both likeable and relatable, whilst also being realistic. I found it hard to put this book down once I had started it and I am now looking forward to the next book in the series.

Burned by Fire (Firehouse 13 Book 4) by Danielle Jacks – Review by Karyn Taylor

Burned by Fire (Firehouse 13, #4)Burned by Fire by Danielle Jacks
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the 4th book in a multi-author series set around Firehouse 13. I have read several of this author’s books so far and have always enjoyed them so was happy to read more of her work. I was also interested by the blurb so it was a no brainer for me to read this book.
I really enjoyed Ember and Sol’s story. Sol is a retired firefighter, having sustained an injury in a fire which left him unable to continue in the role. Ember is a relatively new firefighter who had had Sol as her mentor and had always had a bit of a crush on him.
As Sol slips into an alcohol fueled depression due to his enforced retirement, it’s Ember who helps him through this hard point in his life. This is a great friends to lovers romance with the added grit of seeing Sol struggle through this particularly hard time.
I did find the writing a bit disjointed (is that the right term?) and it didn’t flow as well as the other books by this author but I loved the characters and the storyline so still enjoyed the book.

If you read the prior you know our main characters very well. Tia the headstrong but broken woman and Bridger our right wing man of Levi. We start with the back story as to why Tia is so broken. And why Bridger was so hell bent on making sure that the calendar worked out correctly.

Seeing their interactions with each other while book one is going on and even throughout this book were amazing. I truly loved this story. I am definitely going to continue with this author. The emotions just felt so real. You need to give this series a go.

The Mastermind (WaterFyre Rising, #1)The Mastermind by Nadia Han
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Mastermind is a good read but it didn’t have a big pull to draw me completely into the story. I always enjoy a brother’s best friend and millionaire love story but somehow the connection of Remi and Audri fell a bit flat for me. They were a bit cheesy in a lot of the dialogue and at times their intimacy felt forced. I did enjoy the suspense the author gave us and the twists and turns we took to get the full mystery unraveled. I recommend because it did give me the happy ending I look for when reading this style I just failed with the character connection.

Wow! What can I say about this totally captivating and entertaining book. Nolen is a wonderful character and right from the very start I was 100% on his side and wanted him to thrive and succeed. He was the second son, bullied by his pack and definitely not seen as a leader in any way. That all changes and he must become the Alpha and lead his pack into the future. He receives very important training from another pack, where he also makes very valuable bonds. Amora the younger sister to his best friend Sawyer becomes extremely important to his and his packs future. All the characters are wonderfully written and the storyline so creative that once you start reading you won’t be able to put it down.

One In A Billion (Pierce Brothers, #3)One In A Billion by Belinda Williams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the 3rd book in this series and it can be read as a stand alone. The Pierce brothers are barely mentioned and have very little page time in this book. While they are totally attracted and drawn to each other, there wasn’t any real excitement in this story. It was likeable enough and flowed ok. But the “must keep turning the pages” draw that I got from the first book just wasn’t there this time. I was more drawn in by Pip’s circumstances in this book. Still gave it four stars as the character development was there. Just didn’t get as excited this time around.

This is a beautiful paranormal story. The author’s writing is beautiful and really drags the author into the story and the lives of the characters. I love how the characters from the past and present mix and how their lives are connected in ways you don’t expect.
Roxanne has been through an awful lot and is now dealing with grief over losing her husband and son but also guilt. To help her overcome this she takes a job to help a old lady in her final days.
However the old lady and the house aren’t what they seem. There is a story to tell about the residence of the houses past. A story of love, betrayal and unanswered questions. Claudette wants this story told before she passes.
So that is also part of Roxannes job. But with strange happenings in the house, strange figures appearing and Roxanne not knowing what’s real or just her mind playing tricks this is one story that will take some time to unravel and when it does it will shock and surprise everyone.

Death & Mirrors: All Things Dark & Deadly, Book OneDeath & Mirrors: All Things Dark & Deadly, Book One by S.F. Benson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Alice in wonderland meets Sherlock Holmes. This was such an enjoyable read.

Evaline’s mothers death has left her with questions. Just when she seems to be getting somewhere, a guest comes calling to seek magical assistance from Evaline’s father, an occult archaeologist. When he declines, Evaline’s curiosity gets the better of her. With her necromancy gift and detective skills, she finds herself on a mission in a mirror world – solve the mystery and get back home!

Evaline’s sassy and passionate personality made this book for me! The relationship with her childhood friend, Delbert, was adorable and Evaline’s determination to refine her skills to become a detective was refreshing, considering the setting in the late 1800’s.
The quirky characters we meet were a great addition to the story.

The pacing was good. I would have enjoyed more detail, especially about Evaline’s magic and the mirror world. This didn’t stop me having a great time.

The ending has me sitting on the edge on my seat for book 2!! Am looking forward to picking it up – this reader needs answers!

A great choice if you love a leading lady with some sass and enjoy a bit of mystery and magic!
