The first thing that caught my attention with this book was the cover. The illustrations are beautifully done and really add depth to the story itself. Talking to kids about friendships and kindness is incredibly important but can be a bit tricky. This book makes it not only easy to learn, but fun to experience along with Cray the Crab. Both of my kids absolutely enjoyed the rhyming throughout the book which I have found has helped the information stick around in their minds. I feel that this would be a wonderfully helpful book to have in your family and the classroom!

This book was age appropriate for my three littles and they loved it. The were engaged for the entire story which is rare for them. As a parent I liked the message it had about friendship and helped me to talk to them about some social cues they can look for when they play with their friends. Overall, I will be adding more of Cray and his adventures to our home library.

This is a cute little story. I really like the rhyming and think kids will like it too. The story of Cray is nice, he liked pinching his friends with his claw, but they didn’t like it as much. When he lost the claw he felt so sad because he was changed. His friends were able to show him they liked him even though he was different now. I recommend this book, kids will like the rhyming and the story.

This is the story of a crab named Cray. Cray has a tendency to be a bit of a handful for his friends. It is not until Cray has an accident that Cray begins to see what true friends are like.

I think this is a great one for little kids. Teaches some lessons on kindness and seeing others in a different light. Beautiful illustrations.

As usual, as soon as we saw a new book by this author, the whole family was excited for story time. This book really explores what it is like to use your imagination and it is definitely one that got all of ours going! It was such a fun story right from the start, and my two kids were fascinated with the idea of being transported to a boat.
The illustrations in the book were colourful and a perfect fit for the story being told. We marveled at them just as much as we read the book (which has been multiple times!) and I am sure we will do the same when we read the book again. This is a brilliant and fun story that is worth reading with your family.

This book is such a fun and entertaining story and a really great way of teaching children the important of kindness. The way the author has written this book is so engaging and captivated both of my kids right from the word go. The rhymes were well thought out and catchy and the pictures in the book made it come alive.
As a parent, I loved the premise of this book. Teaching kids how to be kind can be so difficult, yet this book discussed the topic with ease. We will definitely be reading this book again, and any more from this author.

A New Day for Cray is a fun little kid’s book by Pa Rhymes. This book follows a crabby crab named Cray that likes to pinch and bully. After Cray is confronted by his friends he has an accident and learns what friendship means. This was a sweet book. It has beautiful illustrations and easy-to-understand lessons for kids. The way Cray’s friends confront Cray is a great way to show children boundaries and what to do if being bullied. The way Cray’s friends are there for him when he has trouble despite his earlier behavior shows the true meaning of forgiveness and friendship. I highly recommend this story.

This is a great story to read with your child… teaches about being kind, how sometimes hard lessons have good endings. The illustrations are great and I like how the author used a pinching crab as the main character. Sometimes we all are pinching crabs and need a little lesson to remind us that we don’t have to pinch our friends.

The art work is beautiful, I love the characters and the story is an excellent lesson for children. Cray may have been having fun pinching and teasing his friends, but they did not like it. I love that the friends all come together in the end to show Cray their support. At the end for “Cray’s takeaways”, these are important lessons to teach children in regards to their friendships and how to treat people in general.

The Round BoxThe Round Box by Lois Wickstrom
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was such a lovely children’s story that will definitely spark some imagination. Carrie certainly got more than she bargained for when she tried on her Grandmothers fascinator! The magic begins the moment she places it on her head. One thing I really love with the witing in this book is the way that font changes for the lovely descriptive words the author uses – this could provide quite a few talking points for children when talking about how to improve sentences by adding these wonderful words.
This is a really lovely story and one that will definitely create some imaginative thinking from the children reading it.

What a sweet and fun children’s book! ‘The Round Box’ is the 2nd book in the Grandma’s Closet series by Lois Wickstrom.
Everyone is busy and Carrie, looking for something to do, finds a box marked ‘Fascinator’ that her Grandma left behind when she moved across town. Carrie is indeed fascinated by the box and opens it to find an interesting hat. Putting it on, Carrie finds all sorts of things that might have been mundane before, but are fascinating now.
The story flows nicely and I like how some of the words are made more interesting by the use of a different font or graphic. It would be a good book to read with a young child as the illustrations are lovely too.

Paws for safety was a wonderful, well illustrated children’s book that offered many tips, tricks, and helpful information to help kiddos understand how to have healthy, fun, successful relationships with their pets. The author included lots of helpful tips for parents in the back of the book as well. I read this book on my phone with the kindle app and also on my kindle oasis and I can attest that it was so much better to see these pictures in full color rather than the black and white of my oasis.

Carrie’s Grandma has moved across town but she left four boxes in Carrie’s house labeled “KEEP”. Anytime Carrie is missing her Grandma, she’ll go looking through those boxes. Each box she picked up felt like another but she finally decided upon one. When she opened it, there was a fascinator that resembled a ship. Once she put it on, she was on an adventure!

These books are great and should be in every library! This is a great opportunity to talk with a youngin’ about what a fascinator is. Honestly, I hadn’t heard that term until I became more interested in “royal life” and started watching shows and reading about them. This is also a sweet story about the love and influence of a grandparent.

The Round BoxThe Round Box by Lois Wickstrom
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“The Round Box” by Lois Wickstrom is a charming and imaginative children’s book that explores the power of imagination and the wonders it can bring. In this particular story, young Carrie discovers a round box labeled “FASCINATOR” in her grandmother’s closet, only to find a fascinating surprise inside.

I have read many of Lois Wickstrom’s books, and she does a fantastic job of capturing the sense of wonder and awe that can be experienced during imaginative play. The idea of a simple hat transforming Carrie’s perception of the world is both creative and captivating. Young readers will likely be inspired to explore the power of their own imaginations, encouraged to think outside the box, and find ways to see the world through a different lens.

Throughout the story, there is a delightful sense of whimsy and exploration. Lois Wickstrom’s descriptive language invites readers to truly immerse themselves in Carrie’s imaginative journey. The illustrations are also vibrant and engaging, enhancing the magic and playfulness of the narrative.

This is a cute story about using your imagination and I think kids would like it. I also like the idea that Wickstrom is weaving in on how to deal with missing people when we can’t be near them (I always love how she is working in multiple levels of lessons in her books). I feel that the illustrations are a little lackluster with this series. I normally gush over the artwork, but it’s different even from the cover of the book. I love Wickstrom’s work and recommend these books for a good bedtime read with your littles.
