OMG! This was such an amazing book. Emma is such a strong and fiery character, although I would have to say I loved Josie more. She was so tiny, yet commanded attention and never let anyone take advantage of her. When Emma disappears from her family’s ranch in Texas, her mother Josie never stops looking for her. She even takes one of the ranch hands to court to have him charged with Emma’s disappearance. Meanwhile, in what seems to be another time period on the ranch, Emma is being held captive by a tribe of secret cave dwelling people. She becomes one of their medicine women and adapts to their way of life, until a terrible disease runs through the tribe. What will happen to Emma? Will Josie ever find her? Will Emma want to return home or will she stay with the tribe?

A bit of a slow start for me, and I wish I had known more of the back stories of Kate and Tilly. Kate is a psychologist who opens her own practice to try and help teens in her home town, she suspects a human trafficking ring involving city officials and businessmen. Tilly is a nurse who works with victims of sexual assault to collect evidence against their attackers. Kate and Tilly are sisters and each have a past that personally links them to their work and drives them to help those in similar situations. Each are uncovering evidence that can put someone behind bars for life, and each are putting themselves directly in harms way to protect those like them. A very touching story that shows that your past should not prevent you from becoming who you want to be and helping others.

This was a great book! I love the mix between the time-period piece and the supernatural! Elinor is a wonderful character that uses not only her supernatural skill set but also her investigative skills to help those who are grieving. And then add to it some mythical creatures and you really have a story. I hope to follow Madame Chalamet on her future adventures and hopefully see the romance between her and the duke Archembeau blossom (or maybe I’m reading too far into their interactions).

  1. A YA book about wishes and dreams and how you have to be careful what you wish for. Bax must realize that wishes can become reality. A darker version of YA fiction full of action that will keep you guessing. Sacrifice for friends and a true coming of age story. Good read to the very end!!

The Mind-Reading Hat is a cute children’s short story about a young boy on his “unbirthday”. He receives a hat from his grandfather and a thinking stone from his mother as his “unbirthday” presents. The hat leads him to a turtle stuck in a heating duct and the stone helps give him the idea to use the hatband from the hat to save the turtle. An adorable little book.

Agent Red: Fatal Memory (Teagan Stone, #1)Agent Red: Fatal Memory by Ava S. King
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Agent Red was a very fast read. Jumping right into Teagan’s “kidnapping” and reintroduction to The Firm to save an old team mate who had gone missing. One catch, Teagan doesn’t remember her previous life as Agent Red. I do wish the author would have went further into the background of Teagan and her team, but maybe that will be coming in Book 2. Page turning action from beginning to end.

I was absorbed back in time the moment I started reading. This was such an amazing story about a young girl growing up during WWII and how her and her family overcame the tragedies set before them. I almost felt like I was there living in that time with Mimie. I am no historian but it seemed to me that all the events in the book were accurate. Really what a wonderful and realistic book, it really touches your heart.

Emma and Jeremy are such a sweet couple (I hope we get to see their wedding in a future book). When Jeremy’s mother comes to town Emma isn’t sure of her true intentions, but eventually realizes she may be being unfair. Emma just seems to have a natural talent for knowing when to push a little further and follow her gut to find the truth. Mote mysteries solved, more family connections made, and more Emma and her adventures. With every new book in the series, I believe I am becoming addicted.

Love this book! I am an avid horror/thriller reader, Dean Koontz and Stephen King among my favorite authors. This book has so many twists I almost couldn’t keep up. Gabriel is pulled between two women he loves, and who should he believe? His mother is the Mother Superior of a nun ran orphanage and his wife is his whole world. Each telling him the other is evil, but who is truly the dark one? How is he to know? Mind powers and evil darkness take over, and you won’t believe how it ends.

A time hopping whodunit that will keep you reading all night. I was hooked after the first chapter, was it Clancy that scarred his brother? Did Joel really kill his own father? And is Garrison really Clancy’s grandson? Going back between the 1940s to uncover Clancy and Joel’s life and to the 1990s while Garrison learns bits and pieces about who he thinks might be his grandfather. This story will keep you turning the pages. Will Molly and Garrison discover the truth tracking down what little information they can? Is Clancy still out there while Joel is in prison? Possibly for a crime he didn’t actually commit? But seriously, you won’t be able to put it down!

Distant Memories (Nurse Morgan Series Book 2) by Kate MacInnis – Review by Kylean Sprosty

Distant Memories: A Nurse Morgan Series: Book TwoDistant Memories: A Nurse Morgan Series: Book Two by Kate MacInnis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Distant Memories is the second in the series. Can be read as a stand alone but the first book Distant Heart Sounds adds so much background to what happens in this second book. Morgan is still struggling with adjusting to her new psychic ability of seeing ghosts when she learns there are also evil spirits afoot. Esmerelda is a seductive spirit who wants Caleb for her own and goes to some extreme lengths to chase Morgan off. When Esmerelda becomes destructive, Caleb and Morgan reach out for help to lay her spirit to rest. I love these quick reads with these great characters. Great book!

This was such a sad story for me ro read. I completely connect with how the author felt going through Kingsley’s diagnosis and treatment. My childhood dog was diagnosed with bone cancer and we paid for amputation of one of his legs as that was the recommendation from the vet, although he was with us a bit longer than Kingsley after his treatment, it was still very heartbreaking when we realized it was his time to go. The dogs that come into our lives and touch our hearts like Kingsley, are the ones who stay with us forever. I love that the author took the time to write down her experiences and thoughts during that time to share with others who may be going through something similar.

The Vardoger Boy (The Forerunner Saga Book 2) by Jay Veloso Batista – Review by Kylean Sprosty

The Vardoger Boy (Forerunner Series)The Vardoger Boy by Jay Veloso Batista
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Thankfully I read the first book in the series or I feel like I may have been totally lost. The historical descriptions continue to completely immerse you into the scenes and life of the characters. This book has more action and adventure right from the beginning than the previous book. As you more closely follow Cub, Kara, and Finn in their stories, you also can tell there will be more to come as some of the other characters still need closure. This second book does not seem to have as much of the magical elements as the first book and seems to be more involved in the historical aspects. With that said, still a great read!

Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse (The Forerunner Saga Book 1) by Jay Veloso Batista – Review By Kylean Sprosty

Thorfinn and the Witch's Curse (The Forerunner Series #1)Thorfinn and the Witch’s Curse by Jay Veloso Batista
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Hard to follow at first with all the different names and story line changes. Once you get to Thorfinn’s adventures it becomes much easier to follow. I am by no means a history buff, but the book seems to be historically accurate in regards to the Viking culture. Thorfinn must concur the curse that was set upon him through his grandfather’s misdeeds years before. The Raven hopes for Thorfinn’s success in removing his own curse. The magic elements make the very historic world-building much more enjoyable and entertaining. You can tell the story is left open enough for a sequel to continue, hopefully the next book is just as enchanting.

An adorable ghost story! Morgan experiences life after death though encounters with ghosts who had lived in her home for years, but she was unaware until she had her own near-death experience. She entrusts her friend Savvy with her secret to make sure she hasn’t gone crazy, only to learn Savvy has a gift as well. Not being your typical scary or “help the dead pass on” ghost story, this one was very sweet. Jonathan and Elisabeth were great ghost hosts in helping Morgan navigate her new gift.

No Pistol Tastes the SameNo Pistol Tastes the Same by Jacob Paul Patchen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Not exactly how I thought this book would go. At first I was sure this was going to be more of a struggle between committing suicide or not, but JP’s story was more about over coming the demons inside yourself. JP is much like a friend of mine in his struggles and self destruction so it was interesting to see how JP was changed and his thoughts. I’m excited to see the second book and how/if JP and Adin renew their relationship. I do think Lisa is my hero in this story though as she tries everything in her power to help her husband until she has no choice, and even then she still tries to help JP from a distance. Grandma was my favorite character, strong and witty and demanding respect.

Selena is sent to Mexico after it is discovered that her and her mother were in the U.S. illegally. Wyatt worked at the embassy in Mexico City when Selena came in to try and get back to her life in Arizona. From that moment their lives took on an interesting twist. A wild adventure through Mexico to discover Selena’s past and Wyatt’s future. Drug cartels, DEA agents and unlikely help bring them on a wild journey. Selena is a brave character to discover her past and face it through the jungles of Mexico. Wyatt seems a little uptight, but at least his careful planning provides some comfort. Suspenseful and a real page-turner.

The True Purpose of VinesThe True Purpose of Vines by Giovanna Siniscalchi
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Julia and Griffin are an unlikely pair: passionate Portuguese and stoic Englishman. When Julia discovers her vineyard is in trouble she seeks the help of Griffin to save her livelihood, at first he is reluctant but eventually gives in. Julia drags him on a four day trip to see someone who may be able to help her, only for them both to fall in love. That is until Julia discovers that Griffin may not have been forthcoming and she runs away. Julia is a head strong, fiery, character, very much out of place for a woman in her time. Griffin is everything you would expect, and can be irritating throughout the book.

Maggie is truly an outsider of her day. Someone who wants more than what most women were allowed to dream of in her day. And she went for it, regardless of what people would think. Her struggles are inspiring as well as heart-wrenching. I couldn’t imagine having to face what she did, especially on my own. The author really brought these characters to life (probably with the help of those in her life who inspired them). While reading you really can picture yourself in that time, in those places and it seems so real. Beautiful story, I would love to see a second book come out to continue Maggie’s story.

Josie is so brave for standing up to her creep of a husband Eddie, and protecting her two children. I also feel like she was slightly over paranoid, especially about the virus, but that’s probably a learned trait being with Eddie. I loved that the author included the virus into the storyline. It was strange to read about something I lived through during my lifetime, something that actually affected me, it allowed me to see it through different eyes. The layers of mystery that slowly unraveled through the book kept my attention through each page, especially the pink ladies. Great read!

Having read the previous books in this series, I was able to follow the characters and connections between them. I would have been completely lost if I hadn’t.

It was touching to see Emma continue to grow, both individually and in her relationships. She is such a smart and independent character, I feel could be a great role model character for young women. The mysteries throughout the book are always keeping you wanting more. Reading as Emma faces some major hardships, and old enemies, adds to her character and growth.

If you like mysteries and romance – these books are for you!

Zelda and Scott continue their amazing story. Their life changes forever, tragically and they must find a way to struggle through. Heartbreaking, tearjerker, I had to put the book down a few times. You must read the first 2 books in the series to get the full backstory. The blurb at the end about the 4th book has me hanging!

A continuance of Scott and Zelda’s story but in a different fashion. Logan holds a grudge against Angel because of what happened to his sister, what he does will surprise you. Rionna is not her self and no one understands why, except for Scott who again tries to help solve the mystery of what happened. Another great story in the series about the paranormal and psychic gifts. Excited to see what’s next.
