This story takes place in Scotland within a Viking village. There is murder, betrayal, and a bit of romance. Ketil and Sigrid are the main characters. and the ones attempting to solve the murders that strategically seem to keep taking place. Many suspects and few answers have the pair scrambling to solve the case before more bodies turn up. Will they solve it in time, or will the greed of others take down everyone.

Historical Fiction is making its way onto my reading list a lot more lately. Soo many good stories are appearing, and this is one of them. I was unsure when I started this book but the further I read the better it got. Each scene was vividly described, and the bits of history thrown in were fascinating.

Book 4 of the Orkneyinga Murders series did not disappoint. The story development just keeps going and getting better and better! If you like historical books, viking books, and mystery/murders, you won’t be disappointed by this series or this book at all! The author has a unique writing style that captures your attention and has you really flipping the pages as quickly as your eyes can read.

There’s just something about a book that’s not only historical, but a mystery to boot. This was such a nice book to cozy up and get lost in! Set in the viking era which I am really into, it was really great! The characters were well thought out and the entire book was so well written. It really was a great start to a series and the author did an excellent job making a book that held my interest and gave me an easy, enjoyable, snuggle up book!

Readers are thrust into a captivating world, and left with no choice but to seek out the next book in the series. I can’t wait until I come across these characters again!

Another wonderful instalment to this series. I loved the storyline and the author definitely kept me hooked form beginning to end. I was completely engaged with the mystery I the story and really did feel like I was right there with the characters at times. The authors imagination really shines through in this book and her attention to detail make it a very exciting book to read. The characters Ketil and Sigrid are great characters to read about and I am excited for more from them in the future!
This was a great read and one that I would highly recommend.

This is a very well written historical mystery. The Bear at Midnight is the 4th book in the Orkneyinga Murders Series, and it continues to set the bar high as the previous 3 books did. I am a huge advocate of reading books in book order, that is almost a necessity for this series. While you can read them out of order, you will not get the full effect of the story. This book follows the Earl of Orkney and his hunt to find a killer.
I am not typically a fan of historical mysteries, but this one was well written, had great characters and the suspense throughout the book, kept me tied to the pages. 4 out of 5 stars.

This fourth book in the Orkneyinga Murder series is just as intriguing as the earlier books in the series. The two main characters Ketil and Sigrid are well written characters who always seem to be in the right place at the wrong time getting sucked into finding out the reason for murder. The depth of the descriptions of the area along with the well written characters make the story one that I had a hard time putting down. I will be checking out more books by this talented author.

This is the first book in the Orkneyinga Murders series. It also happens to be the first book I’ve read by this author. The book combined two genres that I like to read – historical fiction and a murder mystery! In the beginning it took me a while to figure out the characters and how they got along with the others. The story is so engrossing that I wanted to keep reading as long as possible each night. The characters in the story were well written and I loved the parts where I felt like I was learning more about the Viking way of life.

While this is the fourth installment in this series it is just as incredible as the previous three. This investigative, intriguing, historical crime series has grabbed my attention from the beginning and I simply can’t put them down. This author really knows how to pull her readers in and keep them guessing until the very end. While this book could be read as a stand alone they are all so incredible that I recommend reading all of them so you can get the most from her wonderful characters and beautifully woven plots. Her characters are perfect, her plot Is woven almost like an intricate spider web and she’ll leave you with your head spinning trying to figure out this complex murder mystery. So if your looking for a great book to pick up this weekend, then pick this one up today.

While this is a brand new author to me this is one of the most fascinating books that I have read this year. But this thrilling new mystery series isn’t any normal series its all based around vikings, how exciting does that sound? While the plot was facinating, the characters where phenomenal, I did find myself occasionally mixing up the characters as so many of them had similar names. But overall this writer did an incredible job. Our main character comes back after a long disappearance only to suddenly find himself surrounded by murders. But what happens when he suffers wounds while trying to solve these murders? Will he survive and figure out who is behind all of these murders? You’ll have to read this mystery to find out for yourself.

The Bear at Midnight (Orkneyinga Murders Book 4) by Lexie Conyngham – Review by Allyson Ware

I said this before about the first book in this series, but the author does an immaculate job of world-building and character development. There is a coziness to these novels that I cannot shake (as much as I want to). Regardless of the plot being a murder mystery, anyway.

Mysteries are difficult to find surprise in, at least in my personal experience. But, this novel surprised me a few different times. I won’t spoil the surprises here, but you will find them I assure you. If you are a murder mystery fan, this series will not disappoint you.

Tomb for an Eagle (Orkneyinga Murders Book 1) by Lexie Conyngham – Review by Allyson Ware

One of my first thoughts about this book was that it is cozy. Yes, there is a dead body found in a gully, but the way the author writes makes me want to curl up with a blanket and a cup of tea on a rainy day and read.

This novel has a few different perspectives, which I have come to love from this author. The characters are explained in great detail, along with the world the author has created. You really understand what is happening and the only questions you are asking are the typical questions in a murder mystery. This author really does not leave much to the imagination when it comes to details and I definitely appreciate that. If you have not read this book and love mysteries, this is definitely a novel for you.

The Bear at Midnight (Orkneyinga Murders Book 4) by Lexie Conyngham. This is the 4th book in the series and I recommend reading them in order to get the best experience. This is a historical mystery that will keep you guessing all the way through. When the local handyman is murdered his family is only worried about who gets the business and his possessions. Sigrid and Ketil are working as hard as they can to find out who the murderer is before more bodies begin to pile up. This author’s writing is so beautiful and moving I feel as if I am in the book in Scotland with the Vikings. Sigrid and Ketil must work around the clock because more murders are happening and they don’t want any more murders on their watch. In the midst of all of the murders, feelings are flowing around between Sigrid and Ketil, it’s obvious they are a match made in Heaven but they haven’t figured it out yet. This book could be read as a standalone but is much better reading them all.

Mystery books are not my usual cup of tea, but when I picked up the first book in this series I was sucked in. This is the fourth book in the series and it is just as gripping as the first three. Though it is part of the Orkneyinga murders it can be read as a stand alone. I would recommend reading the other books in the series. The story is well written with characters that you want to continue to read about. Who is the murder? It could be anyone who has a motive, which could everyone. The author keeps you guessing as to the answer to who done it. Once you start you will not want to put the book down! A wonderful read that I would highly recommend.

A historical mystery set in the time of the Vikings, it has lots of action, wonderful characters and a plot that will keep you engaged and wanting more. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The Bear at Midnight is the fourth intriguing instalment in the Orkneyinga Murders series by Lexie Conyngham. As with the previous books, this is an intriguing historical crime and investigation story- a bit of a whodunit murder mystery that kept me guessing the whole way through.
Again, this story is set in Scotland in the age of the Vikings- with characters we have met previously. And as I have come to expect, this talented author pulled me into the story and transported me through time with her vivid descriptions and detailed storytelling.
This book could be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading the previous books, as they are definitely worth the read, too.
Looking forward to more.

This is the 4th book in the series and even though I haven’t read the first 3 books I still really enjoyed this one. I think if you read the books in order you would get a greater understanding for the characters but it doesn’t mean that reading this as a standalone spoils the story but it was still an amazing read and I can’t wait for more. The author does an amazing job at describing the scenes. You actually feel like you are in the great hall, experiencing everything that’s happening. The author takes you  a historical  murder mystery set in the Orkney. It is written so well that I didn’t know who was responsible for the murder until it was revealed which I loved as i normally realise who the suspect is before then so it was refreshing to have no clue until it was revealed.

When the leader dies and other people turn up murder our two main characters, Ketil and Sigrid must solve the murder before the killer strikes again.
With enemies around every turn, a fight to become the new leader and now these mysterious murders the pair need to figure it out before its too late and gets too close for comfort.

While I am not one for historical mysteries, I was in the mood for something different.

When the Viking leader dies, it becomes the responsibility of the Earl of Orkney to choose a replacement and also solve the mystery of who killed the previous leader.

What made this such an engaging read is that I could not figure out who the killer one, since most of the characters had a motive and it could be any one of them. The surprise was who did it.

I have not read the previous novel but I plan to know more about the characters and their backstories.

I do not know what to give anything away, but I would definitely recommend it. I hope there is another book so I have more to look forward to reading.

I don’t normally read historical stories, but I couldn’t help but choose to read this after seeing that it was set in Viking times! The descriptions were vivid and beautiful giving me a clear picture of the setting. The characters completely endeared me to them and they just matched well. I truly enjoyed this book! Having started this series, I had to keep reading! I loved the way all the characters interacted with each other. I wished I could walk around outside and see the beautiful places that were painted into my mind! This author does a fabulous job showing you their world, and dragging you in, to the point where you look up and don’t expect to see your own space, but truly expect to see their world. As someone who usually shies away from historical fiction, I truly recommend this series because it drew me in from word one, so I’m really glad I decided to try something different than I usually do!

It is an intriguing and original historical crime murder mystery. This fascinating tale is set in Scotland and is rich in history and culture in a time where Vikings reined. I love Scotland and with the authors engaging, detailed and descriptive writing it was easy to imagine and loose myself in the story. The tale is suspenseful and mysterious, and with the same whodunnit feel as the first book. I love the way that the author keeps you on your toes by switching things up, so you were thrown off track and are unable to tell who is responsible until the big reveal.

This is a fantastic and well written historical fiction book that really grabs your interest. It can be read as a standalone but I think the series is well worth your time. The series really does go from strength to strength, each book better than the last. The story is so detailed it really feels like you are there with the characters. The imagery is so vivid that I could picture it clearly as I read the book.i thought the story itself was interesting. It was gripping from the moment instarted reading and I thoroughly enjoyed every part of it.

This book was gripping in more than one way truly, I could not get enough of how the story as well as the characters progressed, The story brought on suspense, and a mystery woven within words of the book that came together, I loved it from start to fish. Amazing read!

For me it was the plot that sucked me in so deep! I loved the bond between Ketil and Sigrid right from the start. They had each other’s back and only wanted peace to come to the land. They risked a lot for answers, but as we all know sometimes the answers we seek aren’t want we want to realize. I found their bond was a great appeal to the story, everything else added in nicely too. Great build up!

Something else aside from the character and plot I really loved, was the descriptive use of the senses the author added into the story for the reader. I loved how the weather or clothes was deeply said into detail. it made realization really good, and I found I was right there in the town, trying to protect those close to me. Love that sensory appeal. Amazing author to craft such a wonderful engaging book!

This book was a wonderful read from the start to the end for sure. I could not get enough of this book, and I do highly recommend this author and this book. I will be reading other work by them for sure. I highly suggest not passing this one up, its a rare treat meant to be enjoyed!

This is the fourth book in this series which I enjoyed. I highly suggest reading the previous three books in this series to help enhance your enjoyment of this series and this author. I enjoyed being pulled into the story by the characters and what they bring to the story. This is a well written story where the author used details to bring life to the story. This is an engaging story that is hard to put down. A story that is full of action and rivalries that make an appearance when least expected. What will happen when the killings get too close to home for these characters? I enjoyed their growth as well as the growth of the plot throughout the story. The twists and turns had me guessing on what would happen next. I truly enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.
