Miami Days, Havana Nights By Linda Bennett Pennell. Once again I’m blown away at how much I enjoyed take a step back through time with this story. The author just has a way with words turned into vivid movie like stories. From start to finish it’s an incredible journey readers are taken on in past and present with characters you can’t help but feel connected with. I found myself so drawn into the story I just couldn’t put it down which definitely lead to a late night but it was definitely worth it. It’s got a well balanced mix of suspense and romance I found myself trying to flip the pages as fast as possible while also not wanting it to end. It’s well written and paced nicely never feeling rushed or lacking anything. Five stars and highly recommend!

I have to say that I was quite taken in by this book. This is the second book from this author I have read and I wasn’t disappointed. The author has quite a unique story line. The characters are very realistic. I felt as though I was right there in the book going through all the drama with them.

I really enjoyed seeing how Liz’s story has continued. I really like how the author balances the history she is researching with the present day to tell the story. I do really like to read various genres and this is just what I needed. I really would like to read more from this author in the future.

Miami Days, Havana Nights is the followup to Al Capone at the Blanche Hotel, by Linda Bennett Pennell. It isn’t listed as a series, but I think a lot of character background can be gained from reading them in order. I quickly fell in love with this book, as it was an interesting story (2 actually) and a bit of history. The chapters alternate telling the story of Sam Ackerman and Liz Reams. At the end, they merge, and you get a full picture. While I did like that, because its 2 stories, set nearly 100 years apart, at times I was annoyed I couldn’t see what happened next for another chapter. It was hard to alternate, only because it keeps you in suspense a while longer.
Sam is a teenager when he witnesses a murder, and is quickly sent off for his protection. He didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye to his mother, and was sent across the country with not even a change of clothes. But its better than being killed or locked up, so he makes the best of it. He falls in love, to someone forbidden, and must try to cut ties with the mob, but seems to keep getting pulled back in.
Liz is a history professor, who’s passion is researching American Crime. She likes to research the unknown, every day man, and write their story and connection with the mob. She is led on quite the dangerous adventure this time, trying to obtain more research.
Highly recommend this one. I hope there are more to come in this series! I want to see what happens with Liz and Hugh!

I love how the two stories from different time frames connect with each other. I think that when you have two different stories into one book that it can become confusing. However, integrating both stories was very well done. Each story had characters that became important to me, and I couldn’t wait to see what happens next. I can’t wait to see what happens next for Liz!

I enjoyed this book just as much as the first one I read by this author. This author tells a story in the past and the present and she does it awesomely. I had no problems keeping up with this story. The main characters are great and the author made me feel like I was right there with them experiencing everything too. The story was switched back and forth between two characters and that really brought it to life. I enjoyed this story and I am looking forward to reading more by this author. I would recommend this to a friend! Happy reading!

In Miami Days, Havana Nights by author Linda Bennett Pennell we find Professor Liz Reams trying to build on the success she found early in her career. Liz literally stumbles onto the story of Sam, a 17 year old boy who is in the wrong place at the wrong time, witnessing a mob hit. Sam finds himself indebted to mobster, Moshe Toblinsky. Sam’s life further changes when he finds himself in a new place far away from family and everything he has ever known. As Liz follows the bread crumbs to Sam’s mafia connections she begins to question her life and priorities. Is her work worth it? Why can’t she commit to her boyfriend? What in her life actually matters most?
I enjoyed this book, but I had a hard time connecting with Sam and his story. Since I enjoy the author’s writing I continued to the end and am glad I did. This was quite a journey and I look forward to what the author brings about next.

Miami Days, Havana Nights by Linda Bennett Pennell continues to follow our crime writer and Professor, Liz Reams. This time she is looking into the events of a man who is on the wrong side of the mob and Mosche Toblinsky after seeing a murder. The story is written in the same fashion as the first one, where it is based on historical events and we get to see what happened back in 1926. It also interwoven with the present with Liz’s story as she searches for events and the truth and her relationship. It is interesting and suspenseful and is not without the bloodshed and horrors back in that time when having anything to do with the mob. It is easy to imagine all you are reading due to Linda’s writing.

I look forward to more.

I am still finding myself quite taken with these historical fiction novels of Linda Bennett Pennell’s. When I first picked up the Al Capone at the Blanche Hotel I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into but I was instantly hooked. So when I saw Miami Days, Havana Nights was the follow up book I had to have it and had to read it like yesterday.

Miami Days, Havana Nights was another suspenseful, and at times gory, read that kept the pace fast and my tush on the edge of the seat as I read. I loved the stronger undertone of romance that was in this one. Not only did it make the story more relatable it brought us Liz Reams, and I just loved reading her. She is a spunky redhead like myself and I found her extremely entertaining. Sam Ackerman wants nothing more than to love her will he ever get the chance to? I just had to know. I can’t wait to see what will come next from the talented Linda Bennett Pennell.

Miami Days, Havana Nights by Linda Bennett Pennell. This is the second book by this author that I have read. While this book does take place in the earlier years, I wouldn’t really call it a historical book. It was more of a suspenseful novel. Being a fan of mafia books and stories, I knew that this book was right up my alley.
A young Jewish man, the Miami mob, Havana and a University professor all wrapped up into a wonderful book!!! I loved it and I hope you do too!!!

Miami Days, Havana Nights by Linda Bennett Pennell is an intriguing historical suspense story- with drama, action, mystery, and interesting characters
The author has again crafted a complex story- giving us duel stories which unfold on two different timelines- but were tied together by history. The characters are fully realised and very interesting- and all added to the overall storyline.
As noted previously, the authors love of the past, historical detail, intriguing characters, and a great story- really shines through her writing. I wonder what she has in store for us next.

Thank you, Linda Bennett Pennell!

I give Miami Days, Havana Nights by Linda Bennett Pennell, 5 stars.

In the mid 1920s, 17 year old Jewish boy Sam witnesses a mob hit in New York. Instead of losing his life, the men he works for ships him off to Miami, never to see his family again. He must learn to survive with coming to the reality that he will be working for the gangsters since they saved his life. He is told to stay in a Jewish bakery. Here he meets the baker’s daughter and falls in love. But her parents don’t want her to marry a gangster? Can he get out of this life? He owes them so much, but he loves Rebecca. Thus begins an interesting life no one had ever heard of.

While doing research for another course, Liz comes across an unknown man in quite a few photos of notorious Jewish connected man, Moshe Toblinsky. The more she tries to find out about this man, the more mysteries arise, including lots of travel and adventure. Meanwhile she is still dealing with the security of a trustworthy boyfriend, and some issues with her parents. Can she discover who this man is? Is it worth it?

I was blown away by the first book in the series and so eagerly awaited reading this book. I was so not disappointed. It has wonderful characters in both timelines and all of the things going on both present and in the past grip you in the spell the author has weaved of love, misfortune, action and adventure.

I highly recommend this book to all of those who like great books!

Miami Days, Havana Nights by Linda Bennett Pennell continues her story of Liz Reams, American Crime professor. This story is about Sam who gets involved with Moshe Toblinsky in 1926. Sam does not know what he has gotten himself into after witnessing a mob hit. Can he get himself out of the mob’s control?
Liz Reams is back at researching the past and has the love of her life proposing. Why doesn’t everything feel like it is falling into place? She sets out on a journey which intertwines the past and present. I really enjoy how seamlessly the author brings the two periods together. This allows me to fall in and not want to stop reading. I really enjoy the story of the past and find Liz to be relate able and interesting. I look forward to more in this series and am excited to see what is next.

Miami Days, Havana Nights by Linda Bennett Pennell is a brilliantly told tale of history mixed with the present day.
After the first book I didn’t know what the author could do to progress this series. I was intrigued to see what else was to come. What she has produced is simply a work of art.
The way each chapter jumps between the two timelines is so effortless. The issue with this method is that a lot of authors struggle to keep the story straight and not too complicated and yet Linda Bennett Pennell does it with ease. You never feel overwhelmed or confused. Each character’s story is so strong you can clearly tell them apart.
The book has a great depth to it and I found it surprising at just how compelling I found it. This is a very very good book and one I would highly recommend.

Top Five Reasons MIAMI DAYS, HAVANA NIGHTS Is a Five Star Resd

1. Seamless transition from past to present and back again. While there no chapter headings to indicate the timeline, it is easily recognized.

2. Two stories in one. Both past and present stories are fully actualized and could stand on their own.

3. Cadence of writing. There is a quickness to this story and the way the chapters are laid out. Short and to the point, no filler or wasted actions.

4. Great character development. Secondary characters play a vital roll in the story and there is no guesswork as to who they work for.

5. This story held my interest from beginning to end. I was invested in both stories from the very beginning and needed to keep reading to find out how it ends.

The story Miami Days, Havana Nights by Linda Bennett Pennell is a historical/suspense/romance book. It is a story that pulled me in from the very beginning and didn’t let me go until the final page. It weaves a tale so interesting that I was turning pages to find out what happened next. This is a story that takes you to the past as well as tells a story in the present. I enjoyed reading about the character of Sam Ackerman. He is a young man who finds himself without a home and indebted to the mob. Sam feels the weight of that debt, even more, when he falls in love with Rebecca. Will Sam ever be free to be with the woman that he loves? I also loved reading about Liz Reams. She is a Crime professor who seems to have it all. Success in her job, the love of her life, and a new lead on another character from the past. What does the future hold for Liz and her love? Why is it that she can’t seem to commit to him fully? Read this book to find out. This is a story that had my emotions going up and down. Sometimes our biggest debts have nothing to do with money.

1926. When seventeen-year-old Sam Ackerman witnesses a mob hit, he is hustled out of New York under the protection of Moshe Toblinsky, A.K.A., the mob’s bookkeeper. Arriving in Miami with no money, no friends, and no place to hide, Sam’s only choice is to do as the gangster demands. Forced into bootlegging, Sam’s misery is compounded when he falls in love. Amazingly, the beautiful, devout Rebecca wants only him, but he cannot give her the life she deserves. When Prohibition ends, Sam begs the mobster to set him free. The price? A debt, as Toblinsky puts it, of friendship. A debt that will one day come due.

Present Day. History of American Crime professor Liz Reams has it all – early success, a tantalizing lead on new info about Moshe Toblinsky, and a wonderful man to love. Life is perfect. So what’s keeping her from accepting her guy’s marriage proposals? Confronting a long-standing personal debt sets her on a journey of self-discovery. While she delves ever deeper into Sam’s and Toblinsky’s relationship, her understanding of her own relationships increases as well, but the revelations come at a price. The emotional and physical dangers of her dual journeys may prove too big to handle.

I have been in love with the past for as long as I can remember. Anything with a history, whether shabby or majestic, recent or ancient, instantly draws me in. I suppose it comes from being part of a large extended family that spanned several generations. Long summer afternoons on my grandmother’s porch or winter evenings gathered around her fireplace were filled with stories both entertaining and poignant. Of course being set in the American South, those stories were also peopled by some very interesting characters, some of whom have found their way into my work.

As for my venture in writing, it has allowed me to reinvent myself. We humans are truly multifaceted creatures, but unfortunately we tend to sort and categorize each other into neat, easily understood packages that rarely reveal the whole person. Perhaps you, too, want to step out of the box in which you find yourself. I encourage you to look at the possibilities and imagine. Be filled with childlike wonder in your mental wanderings. Envision what might be, not simply what is. Let us never forget, all good fiction begins when someone says to her or himself, “Let’s pretend.”

I reside in the Houston area with one sweet husband and one adorable German Shorthaired Pointer who is quite certain she’s a little girl.

“History is filled with the sound of silken slippers going downstairs and wooden shoes coming up.” Voltaire

This story really has something for everyone: Love, mystery, drama, and past/present stories. My absolute favorite part of this book is how the stories in the past and the present intertwine with each other without becoming confusing. The story from the past was an important part of the present story.

My favorite character in the story was Liz. I didn’t think it would be. However, I feel that she grew and learned throughout the book. I particularly liked the ending of this story. I feel that Linda Bennett Pennell did a great job of wrapping up both storylines.

Al Capone at the Blanche Hotel by Linda Bennett Pennell. I loved this book.I started it at 8:30 pm and stayed up until 2am to finish. It hooks you from the beginning and doesn’t let you go til the end. Its 2 stories actually. It starts in Lake City, Florida in the 1930s when Al Capone checks into the Blanche Hotel for an extended amount of time. The following night a guy named Jack Blevins sees a body being dumped which is a prequel for a very violent summer. The dirty county politics & KKK start killing people left and right. As the body count rises someone is making plans to fill those voids if they don’t all die! Enter Liz Reams in 2011 who is a studying the history of American Crime and has moved across the continent to follow a man. Once she moves she realizes her family and friends were probably right and he’s not the man for her so she immerses herself in her studies. Mystery is all over the fact that Al Capone checked into a little hotel in the middle of nowhere. Why did he pick that hotel in that city. Was he behind the high body count that summer? What Liz finds out will curl your toes and keep you turning the pages way into the night! She is changed forever and if you read this book you will be too! Its an amazing book!
