Apocalypse NOPE!! (Queerpocalypse) by Deidre Huesmann – Review by Francis O’Sullivan

Apocalypse NOPE!!Apocalypse NOPE!! by Deidre Huesmann
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Apocalypse NOPE!! is a teen urban fantasy by Deidre Huesmann about, you guessed it, the end of the world. Awkward teenager Ivy-Jean accidentally sets in motion the series of events that will lead to the apocalypse and now has to figure out what to do about that, on top of all the problems she already had.
This is a fun read, with enjoyable characters. Pestilence, War, Famine and Death undercover at a high school is a great concept, well executed. I think my favourite of the four is War, whose speech is littered with malapropisms and whose response to pretty much every problem is to find someone (or something) to smite! There’s plenty of LGBT+ representation which is varied and sensitively approached.
Apocalypse NOPE!! will appeal to fans of high school paranormal/supernatural stories, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Twilight. And you can’t ignore the parallels with Good Omens (there’s even a nod to it in the text, when the Horsepeople explain why they aren’t Horsepersons) so if you love Good Omens and want a different approach to a similar scenario, this is definitely worth a read!
This book gets five stars from me! This isn’t the first of Huesmann’s books I’ve enjoyed – I was enthralled by the Modern Greek Myth series – and reading this reminds me that I must get round to trying more of her excellent books!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Allegra and Chase really lit up my kindle with this wild and crazy read. I must say I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked this read up by Felicity Brandon, but I am glad that I went in blind. I really loved the complex characters and storylines that had me guessing from beginning to end and never once bored. I really was transported into this wild world where danger only fueled the passion. Things were not predictable which is hard to do sometimes with these mafia series. I will definitely be interested in seeing what else the rest of the books in this dark mafia series will bring us.

Southland Academy for Supernatural Youth by Sandra Tentler and Brooke Tentler – Review by Angela Packard

Southland Academy for Supernatural YouthSouthland Academy for Supernatural Youth by Sandra Tentler
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I very much enjoy stories about the supernatural. I never stopped to think that maybe they weren’t just born knowing how to be great. Southland Academy for Supernatural Youth is where you go to learn and perfect your abilities. Can this band of misfits; a werewolf who can only partially transform, a glitchy witch who messes up the easiest of spells, a vampire that faints at the sight of blood; can they solve a mystery? Can they bring out the strengths in each other to overcome their weaknesses?
This was a very cute story that had me giggling to the end. The characters were like any other misfit teenagers just amplified. Great read!

Myths & Legends: An Indie Love Anthology – Review by Lizzie Chapman Gough

Myths & LegendsMyths & Legends by Laura Greenwood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book combines my two loves; fantasy and mythology. This is an anthology of different fantasy love stories from different authors and I really enjoyed that each story came from different folklore and mythological legends. I enjoy it when authors take myths such as these and put their own interpretation on them and these were nicely done. The writing was descriptive in such a way that I could picture the magic of the times. Having each story from a different author kept them fresh and exciting and I’m eager to explore more from each writer. This was a great taster collection.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the first book I have read by this author and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were so many twists and turns that I didn’t see coming which made me want to keep reading to find out the ending. The author did a great job describing the characters and their relationships. I loved that she writes the story from multiple points of view as this just adds to the story in my opinion. I was drawn in from the beginning that it felt so realistic that and lifelike. Just what I like in a thriller.

The platform for Bake Believe is ingenious! If you can read it and not have food cravings, you’re not human! A delicious and sweet story line about the joys of true friendship, the love of family and first love. I adored the main character, Cat, and her best friend, Robyn. A truly relatable tale that YA readers will eat up! I loved it and plan to enjoy some of the recipes as well!

Apocalypse NOPE!! (Queerpocalypse) by Deidre Huesmann – Review by Hansini Wasalamudalige

Apocalypse NOPE!!Apocalypse NOPE!! by Deidre Huesmann
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Apocalypse NOPE!! by Deidre Huesmann is a Young Adult novel about a girl named Ivy Jean who, through a series of circumstances, is tasked with facilitating the end of the world after being saddled with the 4 Horsemen- or, rather, Horsepeople- of the Apocalypse. This book was an absolute pleasure to read- it was a page turner from the first page to the last, largely due to how utterly charming and compelling the characters were. Ivy-Jean is a well-rounded protagonist who I feel many teenagers, especially girls, will relate to. I think we can all agree that at some point or another, like Ivy-Jean, we’ve felt as if we weren’t enough and have yearned to be loved and accepted by those around us, especially when navigating our high-school years. As for the Horsepeople themselves, War is so gleefully destructive that it’s lovable, Death is the kind but silently dangerous friend we all wish were in our corner, Famine is determined and principled but compassionate and Pestilence, while a pest (ha!), is an interesting and fascinating character. The relationships between Ivy-Jean and the 4 Horsepeople are fleshed out as they’re given ample room to breathe and develop in quiet moments between the flurry of world-ending activity and action. A part of this development stems from how funny some of their interactions are. It turns out that entities with the literal power of Gods at their fingertips are still prone to misunderstandings and the sheer absurdity of humanity, which serves as a vehicle for some of the book’s best humour.

Another thing this book has in spades is diversity- something that is super refreshing to see in our current climate. Almost all of the main characters belong to the LGBTQIA+ community including the main character, and some fall outside the gender binary. Subjects such as sexism and the patriarchy, racism, and homophobia are addressed tactfully and respectfully and in such a way that really echoes the frustrations of our modern-day society. Those belonging to such groups being able to see themselves reflected in such fantastical and multifaceted characters is a wonderful thing, especially because such diverse characters are often just reduced to their status as a minority in other stories.

Beyond amazing characters and diversity, Apocalypse NOPE!! also boasts vivid and sharp description that enlivens every scene in the book. Being a tale that revolves around those with the unequivocal capacity to end the world with a mere sneeze, one would expect it to contain some colourful action and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. The action is quick and fast-paced, and Huesmann’s writing provides the reader with a front-row seat to all of it. At certain points, I was within the text of the page and at the scene- standing right next to Ivy-Jean as we marvelled at the horrific and magnificent powers of the Horsepeople.

All-in-all, Apocalypse NOPE!!, despite the title, is not something you’re going to want to say ‘nope’ to. If you’re looking for a book with quirky and intriguing characters and a well-paced plot that also serves as a commentary on contemporary society, then you need not look further.

ChasedChased by Felicity Brandon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Chased is book one in the Cambridge Men of Honour by Felicity Brandon. It is dark, dangerous and high energy. There is nothing I like more than an angsty and edgy read, and this story ticked all the boxes. The characters blended together and provided a plethora of drama and suspense. The unfolding of the story was hard to turn away from and not a lot got done until I finished it. It was very easy to become immersed and blend with the characters and story. The men is this story were hard edged and had zero tolerance for fools, making this story riveting and a delight to read. Easy to follow, easy to relate, easy to fall for the cast of Chased. 4 stars.

Eye of the Storm (A Gray Ghost Novel, book 2) AUDIO BOOK by Amy McKinley – Review by Charlisa Wahtomy-Alba

When Chris wakes up in the jungle he has no recollection of anything. All he knows is that there is a beautiful woman taking care of him named Mari. She is fleeing from Colombia to get away from a man who is obsessed with making her his wife. Mari knows that this man and his family are no good and she must get away if she wants to live a free, normal life. Mari lies to Chris in order to gain his trust and get his help to flee the jungle, but what will happen once his memory comes back? Their days and weeks spent together in the jungle bring them closer and feelings begin to develop between the two. Soon Chris’ memory comes back and even though he knows Mari has lied, he still wants to make sure she is safe. He has been lied to before and burned by a woman he thought he loved so he isn’t going to get caught up so easily. How can he be sure that Mari is being truthful when she expresses her feelings for him? Will they be able to have a relationship that will be lasting and strong?

Even though this is a continuation of sorts from Broken Circle, it can be listened to as a standalone.

Broken Circle (Gray Ghost Novel Book 1) AUDIO BOOK by Amy McKinley – Review by Charlisa Wahtomy-Alba

Everything about Liv’s current life is a lie. Maybe all of it was. She was living a great life with her husband, Alexander, and selling her sculptors. When she over hears a phone call that her husband brushes off as just work she becomes suspicious. When Olivia finds out that she is expecting and tells Alex, he plans an impromptu trip to see his mother in Venezuela. While there things take a turn and Olivia discovers things about her husband that she was in the dark about. Who was her husband really? She didn’t know this man at all. She is able to make her escape and ends up with an ex SEAL named Liam. Can she trust him to keep her safe? What will happen when the bad men that are following her finally catch up with her?

I enjoy books by Amy McKinley. There is a little bit of everything in them and this one was no exception.

Sons of Sindicato by Sonya Jesus and Cam Johns is what I would consider a dark romance.

Seth and Braelynn are doomed from the start. An attorney and a crime lord just aren’t meant to be, right? With the law coming at her, and the mafia less than happy about the relationship, what can Braelynn do? Is she safe anywhere?

Suspense, mystery and love can all be found in this novella. I can’t wait to read more!

Zoe is a receptionist who is in a relationship with her boss. On the day they he is to meet her family, Zoe’s world starts crumbling around her. A spur of the moment decision from an old crush begins a web of lies that quickly starts spinning out of control.
Damien is at the right place at the right time when he comes to Zoe’s aid. Nothing like claiming to be shacking up with his ex-best-friend’s sister to add some excitement to the day. But what starts out as a story of deception quickly evolves to something more. Zoe and Damien can each play a part for each other…but when happen when their fake relationship begins to feel real?
I found myself rooting for Zoe and Damien despite their reasons for starting out in their “relationship”. They both evened each other out while driving each other crazy (in good and bad ways). I enjoyed watching their story grow and blossom into something real. An overall good read.

Bake Believe by Cori Cooper is an adorably fun story. As someone who spends a great deal of time around middle schoolers, I can tell you she portrays them perfectly!

Cat is you average middle schooler; too concerned with what everyone else thinks. No one in Cat’s family bakes, so when she finds herself in a culinary class, she is less than impressed. Turns out, Cat is a great baker, but something unusual happens when she bakes.

This was a fun young adult story that will have you giggling like a school girl.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is my first book by Sandra Tentler and Brooke Tentler. The cover is what grabbed my attention and I wanted to read it. I am glad I decided to read this book. The plotline is a mystery story with supernatural characters. This is a fast-paced book that kept me turning the pages. The characters are cuts and some characters have recognizable supernatural parents. There are some shifters and the animals are new to me. I really like how these six different characters worked together to find the missing ring. There were some twists and turns that had me second-guessing what I was thinking who did it. I really enjoyed reading this book and I recommend it for fourth grade and up.

The Lightning Horse (Empire at Twilight Book 1) by N.L. Holmes – Review by Chrissy Spulak

The Lightning Horse (Empire at Twilight, #1)The Lightning Horse by N.L. Holmes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I think I’ve found my new favorite author! The Lightning Horse (Empire at Twilight Book 1) by N.L. Holmes is a fantastic historical fiction set in the ancient empire located in what is now Turkey. The story centers around a young Hittite charioteer whose father is killed and grandfather is injured in a chariot accident, and it is up to him to find the truth and settle the score. This book is full of twists and turns and rich with history, and I am here for it. If you are into historical fiction or love horses, you will love the realistic descriptions that the author brings to life within the pages. The best part about it all, for a history junkie like me, is that the author is an archaeologist and historian who has taught at the collegiate level, so you know everything has been thoroughly researched and the descriptions dependable. I am stoked that this is the first book in this series, and I will be looking for more. I recommend this book and author with 5 stars.

Luce Eterna: Part 1: Book 5, The Luminara Series by SJ Molloy. Wow ok so I’m not even sure where to begin this review like I’m at a complete loss. What words can possibly do this story justice? Amazing? Incredible? Freaking out of this world good? All those will have to do. Lexi and Lucca have a huge chunk of my heart and I’ll be honest I don’t think I want it back. These two have taken readers on quite a journey and it’s been down right emotional. But I love every minute of it. Even though I’ll be honest this book just about broke me but I’m still anxiously awaiting the final installment. You definitely need to read this series in order and it’s not for everyone as it does have some difficult situations but I want to praise the authors efforts on handling those situations well and giving us characters we love and love to hate sometimes. I’m so excited for the next one but also sad as it’s the end I believe but I’ll be reading this series over and over. Five of the biggest stars I can find.

Luminoso: The Luminara Series, Book 4 by SJ Molloy. I simply cannot get enough of Lexi and Lucca. These two pull me in and I love getting lost in their story. Book four was just as amazing as the rest of the series. Yes this book may have triggers for some but I think the author handles them well. The situations in this book and series can be extremely difficult to see but I love how the author created our main character Lexi. She’s just so strong even even she feels at her weakest. And Lucca had me swooning just as much in this part of their journey. I love spending time with these two and all their amazing family and friends. So excited for more! Five stars all the way and highly recommended!

With the immediate luring of your curiosity – mixed with recipes that I will 100% be trying when I actually run to the store! I couldn’t have asked for anything better! The way that Cat is relatable, fun, family oriented – she might be one of my favorite characters of all time! I loved watching Cat and her mother’s relationship – including the interactions with her extended family. Then on top of all of that, add a little magic and confusion! I couldn’t ask for anything more, this is a five star book – and definitely a must read!

The Luminara Series: Box Set Volume 1: Lussuria – L’amore – Lucca’s Lust by SJ Molloy.
This series is one of my top picks for 2021. I’m a girl who loves a story about people mainly women living through awful things and rising above it all. Throw in a guy who makes me swoon all that much better. Lucca and Lexi are a couple of main characters that will pull you so completely into their world you won’t even know the time passing. Books one and two are a continuous of their story and book three is Lucca’s view of book one. My only complaint is that I had a hard time getting through book three simply because I wanted the furthered storyline quicker. Don’t get me wrong I loved getting Lucca’s point of view but I’d have liked it a bit later but please don’t take that as a hit against this amazing series because even though I didn’t like the timing per say I still absolutely loved Lucca’s point of view. This series is definitely not for the faint of heart there’s situations that could trigger some and be uncomfortable for others but if you love a strong character who fights hard to live her life I highly recommend this series. It’s well written and paced nicely never feeling rushed or lacking anything. I’m so excited to get more time with Lexi and Lucca. Five great big stars!

Sexy Drug (Losing My Heart Book 1) by Melody Calder – Review by Liz Vrchota

This book is fire! Straight from the very first chapter I was sucked in and held until that last page that I wanted to come because I needed to know how things would come to a close, but at the same time I dreaded so much so. I loved this read and was so enamored. I could not get this book out of my head long after I had finished it. This brought the best of both worlds for me with the slow burn romance and the dark underworld of the mafia too. I won’t divulge all the details or anymore than the blurb does because I feel that would give away too much and ruin the experience for readers. This is one you won’t want to miss and you will have to take my world for it. I will definitely be back for more in this series as soon as it is available! Melody Calder was a new author to me when I picked up this gem but I was pleased with my experience so much I have since gone and one-clicked some of her other works to devour in the very near future as well!
