Moby Plays the Flute by Eeha Bhatt – Review by Jamie Burns

“The moment that you stop believing in yourself, you give up on yourself” (Eeha Bhatt)

Moby Plays the Flute is an amazing book with a powerful message, do NOT stop believing in yourself, and do NOT give up when life gets tough, you CAN do hard things! This book spoke to my heart today because it reminded me of my childhood and how far I have come in life. I struggled with school from elementary through high school, especially with learning how to read and anything to do with math. Without the help of amazing teachers and professors, I would have given up. I am so happy that I did not give up on reading, even though it was hard. It is now one of my favorite pastimes and ended up becoming part of my profession as a school librarian. As much as the message of this book spoke to me as an adult, I wish I could have read it as a child. This is such a beautifully encouraging children’s book.

Hi-lights that I love from Moby Plays the Flute:
– There is a QR Code that enables you to access an exclusive reading of the book!
– The illustrations- Oh My Gosh! Eeha Bhatt did an amazing job creating the illustrations, and the attention to detail is amazing! I just love the illustrations- they are adorable!
– The messages within the book… There are SO many! Hard work pays off, persevere even if something is hard, believe in yourself, and put effort into everything you do. “Effort comes from strong determination, having a goal, and putting in hard work. All of this is ignited by believing in yourself” (Eeha Bhatt).
-The back matter of the book includes all of the messages found within the book and are great discussion points with children. There are a few fun facts and activities included in the back matter as well.

Moby’s dad is a Marine and is deploying right before her birthday. He leaves her a present, a bamboo flute, to open after he’s gone. The flute won’t play and she is really disappointed but after a while she gives up and forgets about it. When she talks to her dad he encourages her to keep trying. She discovers the problem with the flute and this leads to her continuing to try in other areas, which is unusual for Moby because she has a habit of giving up on any kind of effort forward.

This is a cute book that opens up the opportunity to discuss many life lessons with your child or students. There are additional talking points and activities included in the back of the book. The illustrations are beautiful and are done by the author.

Moby is a little girl who wants to excel in school but also has trouble in school. She sometimes gets made fun of and prefers to sit in the back of class to not draw attention to herself.

A day before her birthday, Moby’s Dad has to leave again because he is a Marine. She can’t open the gift until the next day. When she does open up, she sees a flute and she loves it.

Unfortunately, no matter how many times Moby blows into the flute, it does not make any sound. So she gives up.

A year later, on her next birthday, Moby is excited to receive a gift from her day. The special day passes and no presents from her dad arrives. This causes her to look for the flute.

Still doesn’t make a sound. She looks into the flute and notices a note from her dad in it. She tried again and this time, she can make sound with the flute.

Because of her attempting to try again, she was able to play the flute. She applies this to school work.

This was such a cute story. I loved learning about Moby and the important lesson here about putting in hard work and effort. It really is an important lesson for kids

This book was a refreshing story of how to live and grow through tough times in your life. Moby gets a gift from her dad and it’s a flute that she cannot play. She ends up distraught and finally discovers the problem later on in the story. This is a really nice story and nice illustrations for children to enjoy with their parents during reading time!

Moby is a young lady who lives with her parents and sticks to the back of class, she doesn’t like to be noticed very much though, she finds school hard and always wants to run away and most of the time, she does. One day, just before her birthday, her dad, who is a marine has to leave on a tour and is going to miss her party, but he gives her a gift and asks her to open it on her birthday, she promises she will and waves him off.

Her birthday arrives and she opens her gift, it is a beautiful bamboo flute, but when Moby tries to play it, it doesn’t work, its broken, so when she speaks to her dad, she complains and he says to just try harder, but she gives up like she has done many tomes before.

Time passes and Moby’s next birthday comes around, but her dad doesn’t send her anything and it makes her sad, so she looks for the abandoned flute and picks it back up, but when it still doesn’t work, she wants to find out why, this is when she finds a letter from her dad and it changes her perspective on the flute completely.

What lesson can Moby learn from the flute her dad gave her and will she learn from it in the end? This is a story of love, hard work and perseverance and that you should never give up on your dreams.

Moby’s father, a US Marine, leaves her a birthday gift before leaving for military deployment for a year. When Moby opens her gift and discovers it is a flute, she is a bit disappointed because it was not what she was hoping for. Moby is even more disappointed when she tries to play the flute and discovers that it is broken. She puts it to the side and instead tries to focus on school where she wants to make friends and get on honor roll.

However, no matter how hard Moby studies her grades are not good enough to get on honor roll. Feeling discouraged by how things do not seem to be working out for her, Moby picks up the flute and decides to give it another try. When Moby discovers the reason why the flute did not work for her before is because her father had left her a note in it, she begins to understand why her father gave her the flute as a gift. She decides to practice playing music on it and through her playing the flute she learns valuable lessons about hard work, patience, and perseverance.

This was a beautifully written book that teaches some valuable lessons about the importance of never giving up and believing in yourself. The illustrations were extraordinary and exquisitely done. A heartwarming read about self-confidence, courage, and how you should never give up on your dreams. A must read for all ages!

My 7-year-old son and I enjoyed this book. It taught him the same things I’ve always preached about hard work, determination, patience and my son loved how it all came together in the end to work out in Moby’s favor! He and my 2-year-old son also enjoyed the pictures. Parents, this book, is worth the read!

Moby plays the flute was a very inspirational story – perfect for a kid who seems to be struggling with a task. Moby does not realize how important playing the flute is and the life lessons it will teach her. However, it takes her over a year to realize how important it is to stick with something and to keep trying, no matter what!

Moby Plays the Flute is a cute kids book, with a big message. At first, I thought the book was leading toward Moby having a learning disability, or perhaps ADHD. As she was struggling, I wanted to reach out and give her a hug- her mom is not mentioned, and her dad is a deployed Marine. It saddened me that she was struggling for a full year before everything clicking and her turn around. However, my 6 year old didn’t catch on to any of that- he was just happy she learned how to play the flute and found her “hidden” gift. The artwork is wonderful, very vibrant colors and how expressive Moby is. Her facial expression and posture changes as the story progresses, and it lets us know how she is feeling. Moby has quite the fashion sense, and I love how all the colors pop. The author very clearly spelled out the meaning of the book at the end, and the importance of self love and self confidence. I love the summary of the messages at the end, along with the interactive suggestions. This book would be great for an elementary school teacher to read in class, and build a lesson around.

Moby Plays the Flute by Eeha Bhatt. This is such a sweet book and the pictures are beautiful. Its the story of a little girl named Moby and her father is in the military. When he has to go away for a year he gifts her a flute for her birthday. When she tries to play the flute she realizes you can’t just play it automatically you have to learn. As she struggles and learns to play the instrument she learns that hard work and regular practice pays off. This is a great book to give as a gift for kids of all ages. My nephews that are 4 and 7 loved it!

First off the pictures in this are amazing. I could look at them all day.
Moby gets a flute from her dad who is deployed for a year. When she says it’s broken he encourages her to keep trying. This book has so many lessons and age appropriate wording to get across what that message is without being too over my kids heads.

I really enjoyed this book.
This book was well written and had a good story mainly meant for children but is a good reminder for young adults and adults as well.
Moby did not enjoy school and did not have the determination to better herself. Her father is in the marines and left her a gift for her birthday. Moby could not understand why the gift did not work. After some time she used effort and determination to figure out how to get it to work and after some time succeeded.
This book has a great lesson built into it and shows you that no matter what if you are determined to do something and don’t give up you can succeed! I really enjoyed this and would highly recommend this to my other Early Childhood Educator friends to read to their class.

This was beautifully written and illustrated children’s book. I really enjoyed reading it to my niece and she loved the story. There a few talking points along the way which was great. I love dhow to story helped to express to the children the importance of perseverance and yes whilst some things are difficult to do if you keep trying sometimes you can get through it. In this instance for Moby it was playing the flute. It’s great for children to understand that not everything in life is easy and this book is a fantastic was of getting that message across.
A really great story with a great meaning to it.

A wonderful, heartwarming tale of a father and daughter who learn that with patience and perseverance, one can go a long long way. The story revolves around a little girl Moby , who is very sensitive and is intimidated by people’s opinions. Her father encourages her every step, but fate has different plans for him and he is called away for the duty in the marines. Moby is disheartened as her dad will not be back for her birthday. He gives her a bamboo flute as a birthday present before he leaves. . Moby struggles to to play the flute but to no avail. She is easily discouraged and speaks to her father who once again encourages her to play the flute. She perseveres and with practice and patience, she begins to see that she can indeed do wonders. This is a beautiful story with wonderful illustrations. I loved reading this book and would definitely give it to my boys to read.

This book is a feel-good story with excellent life lessons. Moby is sad because she wants to get good grades in school, have friends, and be loved. She studies but doesn’t make the honor roll like she wants. Her father leaves for military deployment and sends her a flute that doesn’t play. Moby eventually fixes the flute and learns important life lessons as a result. I enjoyed this story. I could relate to Moby’s goals and also her disappointments. I was excited by the gift her father gave her and sad when it didn’t work. I would definitely read this story to my children and recommend it for children, especially tween age.

Moby is a heartwarming, wonderfully illustrated children’s book that has that extra flair of not just entertaining children but teaching them life lessons as well. This book showed that people get discouraged, overwhelmed, and sometimes feel like they are failing but the book explained how important it is to not give up or quit but to persevere, keep trying, and push through. It shows how you should always believe in yourself. I feel there is an added element that helps parents as well understand that it’s okay to take a step back and allow children to figure things out on their own, and how much of a benefit that can be to them. I really enjoyed reading this and think it would be a good addition to the bookshelves of households with young children.

I have been really into reading children’s books lately as all of my friends have children and I am constantly on the look for cute books for them to read with them. This book had wonderful illustrations and the story line was easily followable for not only children but for the adults reading this book with them. This story had a wonderful lesson about not giving up as well as other great lessons that children can and will relate too. Moby is just a regular girl who didn’t like attention. But she wanted to be a good student, but it was hard for her. She wanted to be successful, so she could be happy. But she was miserable. UNTIL, her dad gave her the best gift – a flute! But, she couldn’t get it to work. She thought it was broken. Her dad told her to keep trying. But she put it away and didn’t think of it again until the next year. She finally got it to play when she found a note from her dad inside! From then on, she made beautiful music and learned to believe in herself and to never give up!
