I’m not sure who loves these books more , me or the children ?! 🥰📚

This book is simply magical and it’s what I’d imagine a “ real” toyshop to be like 😉

Now Mr Barson , I just fell in love with ! He’s odd , he’s quirky , he’s funny and he’s a little piece of magic every child , young or old needs 🥰

I made little friends along the way and had their role to play …,

Jack , our birthday boy , is going on a special cruise and spots a mermaid which he hopes to see in the toy store but what I like most about him and his family is the topsy turvy tea party 🥰

Audrey has a special place in my heart and parts of her remind me of myself as a little girl growing up 🥰

Nick is another story and his ways has his mother at her wits end and to be honest he wore me out and he’s not even mine 🤣🙈

Lilly and her story made my heart sad 😢 and I just wanted to climb into the book and make friends with her ….

All is not as it seems here and it’s a very special place to be indeed 🥰📚

I have read a few books from this author and I love the way she tells stories. I read these books to my niece and she loves them as well. This book is a little more complex than her other kids books but it is still very good.

Lily, Jack, Audrey, and Nick all go to this amazing toy store. When they enter Mr. Barsins toy emporium is a brand new world. These kids are in shock at all the things this toy store has plus there are things you can even dream of like dragons and even mermaids. They are so excited but is this real or is it just their imagination?

Lily, Jack, Audrey all go to Mr barsin’s toy emporium. Except this isn’t a normal toy store. This is an imagination toy store. This is where as a child you let your imagination run wild. Lily chooses a sylph as her pet, Jack chooses a mermaid, and Audrey chooses a dragon. They all go through these missions, and having to choose to be with their families or stay with their pet. Toward the end a hurricane is coming in and everyone needs to evacuate. Mr Barsin tells them they have to choose to stay at the emporium with their pets or go with their families, but he needs the children so he can be more powerful. Mr Barsin is half dragon, and he needs all the energy from switching children into imaginary things. All three children come together to slay mr Barsin.
This was such a wild ride and so so good! Highly recommend!!
What a wonderful children story Mr Barsins Toy Emporium turned out to be. Like always Lois Wickstrom brings us into an imaginary world that reminds children what to do and not do. She also shows a new side of her storytelling and gives us grief. She always writes the best and I always recommend her stories!

Mr. Barsins’ Toy Emporium is a chapter book designed for children between the ages of eight to twelve years of age. This book is a fantasy story that follows the adventures of several children as they discover magic, adventure, excitement, and perhaps a bit of danger while exploring Mr. Barsins’ Toy Emporium. In a magical room hidden from view is a place where all four seasons exist at once. In this room is where the elementals live, and each child is allowed to adopt one as their friend. Four children end up at the emporium for different reasons and each discover adventures with their new imaginary friend. Soon they are caught up in the fantasy worlds of dragons, gnomes, mermaids, and sylphs. This was an entertaining and fun storyline with interesting characters. I loved the illustrations that were sprinkled throughout the book. Anxious to see what this author comes up with next!

Mr. Barsins' Toy EmporiumMr. Barsins’ Toy Emporium by Lois Wickstrom
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mr Barsin is an unusual man, he owns a toy emporium which to all intents and purposes looks like every other toy shop, but he wears a tuxedo, which is unusual, but he also doesn’t call his toy shop a toy shop and it seems to have popped out of nowhere, so when the youngsters who go to see what this new shop is all about, they are very surprised, especially when they see the murals painted on the outside and the multi-seasonal greenhouse within

Jack is a young boy who’s birthday is just around the corner, so when his parents and grandma take him on a special birthday cruise, he is super excited, especially when he sees a mermaid playing in the bay and waving to him, but he can’t wave back because his parents have hold of his hands Later on at his grandma’s house, they are about to tuck into their usual topsy turvy birthday tea when they see an advert for a new toy store and immediately go to get Jack a present. As soon a Jack and his family enter the store, they see aisles of toys, but Jack spots something else in the corner of his eye, so he goes running to investigate and his family follow him, even though they have no idea what he has seen and this is where he spots the mermaids and cannot wait to see if his mermaid is there.

Audrey is a young woman on a mission, she has learned to play alone and let her imagination run free, so when she explores the forbidden areas where she lives, she finds treasures and these lead her to start training to slay dragons. She has read all the old tales of brave knights, evil dragons and the heroic rewards they gain from slaying them, so when she sees the advert for a new toy shop, she is determined to find a dragon to slay inside. However, it seems that the path to the dragons lair isn’t as easy as she thinks and she comes upon other travellers getting in her way, or so she thinks until her dream comes true and she finds her dragon.

Lilly is a young girl who has had to move away from everywhere and everyone she knows with her father, but there are two special sylphs whom she is especially sad to have left behind, so when her father tells her he might have found someone who can help her to get them back, she is over the moon. When they duo visit Mr Barsins’ she is determined to find her friends and she has some magical help, but something is wrong and it seems that even though she wants to find her friends, Mr Barsin is determined that she doesn’t and that does not sit well with her and she has to find another way to find them.

Nick is a spoiled young boy whose naughty ways are frustrating his mum, but she can’t do much about it when he blames someone else, a bad gnome apart from play along and hope that it will help Nick learn to be good, however, this backfires when she agrees to buy a toy for the bad gnome and so goes to Mr Barsins’. The trip has somewhat of an unexpected outcome when Nick mother finds that instead of a new toy, he has found himself an even naughtier gnome and he refuses to leave without him.

These four youngsters went in to this toy emporium with one goal, but left with another in this magical tale where nothing is quite as it seems and mysteries lie in every forest and flower within this emporium of wonders, but are the gifts they leave with what they were wanting, or have these children put themselves into danger by seeking this place out? This is an engaging and fun twist on a magical toy shop which all ages can enjoy, even though some things may need explaining to younger audiences, it is a great way to learn.

This is another lovely children’s book by this author. Nothing is what it seems when it comes to Mr Barsin’s toy store, which makes this a very interesting and fun story for kids whilst also giving lessons here and there (e.g. the rules about wishing/bargaining statements).
The story line was fun and placed a lot of focus on imagination, full of fantasy creatures and adventure. The characters each had their own stories leading them to the store and reflecting their reactions to the unfolding events.
The writing style was great and flowed very well for the most part. The descriptions made it easy to picture the scenes unfolding and feel involved.
Overall, this was an enjoyable story as an adult, an even better for the kids. A lovely story to read together and a reminder not to let the imagination fade.

This author is quickly becoming a staple in our home. My kids are drawn to the artwork in every book as well as the stories. This book is no exception to that. The imagination that goes into every page is fantastic. The way it makes my kid want to keep reading and turning pages is just awesome. I also find myself enthralled at the visions Lois Wickstrom manages to incorporate in every book. I can not wait to see what the next book will have in store for us.

This book is such a cute book! I got it for my 8 year old, but after reading it all together by 11 year old enjoyed it as well! I have gotten and read a few of this authors books and I must say that you can’t go wrong with any of her stuff. She’s such a wonderful children’s book author!! I can’t wait to read more with my kids from her. This small children’s chapter book takes place in Mr. Barsins’ Toy Emporium. This toy shop is a world a magical world where imaginary friends are real. The book follows four children in their quest for imagination and adventure. A world where it’s all four season and there are creatures all around. Lily, Jack, Audrey, and Nick are all drawn to the Emporium in different ways, but their stories slowly connect at the shop. The book is full of magic and adventures, but like everything there is a price to pay for the imaginary friends and it isn’t money! This book captures you in it’s grip and you just can’t wait to read it. It only took a couple days for my children and I to read and that was with us taking turns reading chapter by chapter.

This book is an exploration of a child’s imagination, and what it’s like to lose it. This book follows Nick, Audrey, Lily and Jake as they are drawn to what appears on the outside to be just a plain toy store, but is really much more. The most important thing to remember in Mr. Barsin’s toy emporium is that nothing is as it seems. Mr. Barsin’s toy store has a hidden greenhouse only accessible through a door in a wall that isn’t real, that allows elementals of all kinds to live and be adopted by a child. Mr. Barsin has a rule, though: Only one elemental per child. He also doesn’t tell them all of the rules, such as statements like, “I’d give anything, if…” are taken literally and as a binding agreement. The children, as the only ones who can see the imaginary elementals (such as dragons, sylphs, mermaids, gnomes and others), select a new imaginary friend, and are allowed to take them home. Many of the children’s adult family members are able to see their imaginary friends after Mr. Barsin sprinkles sylph dust on them, allowing them to be a part of the fun and imagination, while others chose not to as they see it as silly and overindulgent of the child in question. Overall this was an interesting and unexpected book, that would be great for upper elementary age children.

Mr. Barsins’ Toy Emporium by Lois Wickstrom. I absolutely love this author and always read her books! My nephews love them too! This one is really fun being about imaginary friends being real! There are 4 children Jack, Lily, Audrey and Nick are all going to the Toy Emporium to find their imaginary friends. There are Sylphs, mermaids, gnomes and dragons as imaginary friends and the kids all pick their favorites. The owner of the toy store doesn’t ask for money but he does ask for payment in a different form. The story helps kids and parents with grief, neglect and family dysfunction. Reading this as a family would be a great therapy for a lot of people. I love Mrs. Wickstrom’s books because not only are they great for kids but they are really good for a lot of adults too! Mr. Barsins’ Toy Emporium is an enchanting children’s story that takes place in a world where imaginary friends are real! Four children – Lily, Jack, Audrey and Nick – are drawn to the Toy Emporium to claim their own imaginaries. Soon they, and their families, are caught up in the fantastic world of mermaids, dragons, sylphs and gnomes. But while Mr Barsin doesn’t ask for money in exchange for the imaginaries, there is still a cost he expects to be paid.

This is an engaging “be careful what you wish for” story. It explores different family dynamics as well as challenges that children face, including grief and neglect. Parents try and do what’s best for their children, and don’t always get it right. There are many times when a child and/or their parents are in danger, so for sensitive readers it may be good to read this book together to reduce anxiety.

This book gets four stars from me! I’d recommend it to kids, and grown ups, who love to play with their imaginary friends!

I picked up this book thinking it is another picture book, but this one is for a slightly older audience, but enjoyable nevertheless.
Four friends are drawn to a toy emporium for different reasons, they are all seeking something which they do not. The toy emporium holds the answers to their longings, imaginary friends, adventures, mystery, drama and danger lurking in the corner.
It is a very creative story where the friends in the toy shop influence the real kids to do something good or evil.
It was quite a cool tale, except that I felt the flow was not smooth at times. There were abrupt changes in the narrative.
But overall I enjoyed it.

Mr. Barsin’s Toy Emporium by Lois Wickstrom is a great little children’s chapter book. Again, this is another book that is a little different from most of her other works as it doesn’t contain any illustrations. It is also a much longer story. What we get is an interesting fantasy story with adventure, imaginary friends, paranormal creatures, friendship, action, suspense, intrigue, mystery/mysteriousness, imagination, drama, and a little danger.
What will we find at Mr. Barsin’s Toy Emporium- join Jack, Audrey, Nick, and Lily on an adventure they won’t ever forget…

I enjoyed this book as an adult, definitely a middle school aged book. I liked that Lily, Jack, Audrey and Nick were able to form a friendship over their battle to keep their imaginary friends and defeating Mr. Barsin. It seemed like Lily’s Sylphs and Audrey’s dragon were the only imaginary friends that wanted to help and weren’t trying to force their human friends to do something bad. Very imaginative and fun story.

This is an atypical story concerned with a toy store for atypical toys. There is nothing mundane or ordinary in this story. What you will find are interlocking tales of families working together and children learning to make difficult choices. Characters learn to work together, sometimes reluctantly, to help themselves and others out of a catastrophic situation amidst a hurricane evacuation. Themes include man versus man, man versus self, and man versus nature.

Four children with nothing seemingly in common all arrive to the toy store on the same day. I thought the author did a great job of developing the characters of not only the four children, but their families as well. The imaginaries were also quite charming and interesting as well. This is definitely a great middle grade read, I definitely enjoyed the action and adventure that the children’s imaginations lead them on and the surprise twist ending definitely had be on the edge until the final page. Lois Wickstrom is probably better known for her picture books, but this is an extraordinary and magical middle grades read.

Right away, the whimsical cover “grabs” you in and invites you in like an intoxicating toy store. The beginning hooks you right away, wanting to find out about the characters, for the book follows 4 kids and their connection to the toy store of the title. I enjoyed reading about each characters’ stories, however, at times, the story felt disjointed and not smooth transitions between the different character stories within the overarching book.

I did appreciate the author’s world building, each child had a completely different and unique story, but all had a reason(s) to visit to toy shop. The slightly open ending was also appreciated, for it lets ones’ imaginations finish the story, especially with Jack.

The pacing was quick, with the exception of some disjointed flow as I mentioned above. Love the actual writing style, feels like the characters are acting out the scenes instead of talking to you. Overall, an enjoyable read!

I didn’t realise when starting this book it was a Lois Wickstrom one, but it didn’t take me long to figure it out. The writing style is so indicative of the fantastic writing I have come to expect from her. It is intended for a slightly older audience than some of her others books but it was just as imaginative and interesting. This is one that I haven’t yet read to my kids as they are a little young to understand it. However, this is one that I will be keeping in my back pocket for the second they are old enough to enjoy it and appreciate it.
