This is a cozy mystery. Which is short and quick to read. I found it to be the perfect mystery to read one rainy night where I really just wanted to sit and read and be cuddled up with my favorite blanket, a warm drink, and a good book that I can be absorbed in until the rain stops. This story focuses on Eve who begins to wonder how Murder Creek got its name. She begins to research and finds herself deep into a 20 year old missing person case. She soon finds herself obsessed. She ends up writing a term paper on this case and decides to spend some time trying to solve a case that had been unsolved for 20 years. Eve becomes an amazing investigative journalist and begins to get the locals to warm up to her and begin talking. I truly enjoyed Eve as a character. I know I have become hyper fixated on something to the point that I can’t let it go. I feel like this is Eve with this case. But I also feel like its why some of the locals start to open up, because they can tell shes just intrigued and in college so no one really thinks she will solve anything. I definitely enjoyed this story. I thought that is was exactly as it was described – a cozy mystery. I loved it and definitely want to read more written by Jane Suen soon!

Murder Creek by Jane Suen – Review by Tara Johnson Barnes

Murder Creek (Eve Sawyer Mystery, #1)Murder Creek by Jane Suen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Murder Creek is Book One in the Eve Sawyer Mystery Series. It is a murder mystery that centers around the character of Eve Sawyer. Eve is a journalism student who chooses to write an article about a woman who went missing twenty years ago. The only clue to the woman’s disappearance was a bloody scarf that was left behind. Eve decides to delve into the case acting as an amateur sleuth to solve the cold case. Eve has an ability that few others prior to her had which give her a bit of an upper hand in solving the case. As an empath she has unique abilities that allow her to notice minute details that others might overlook. Eve can also feel and sense the moods of others which allows her to tune into their mindset. An added bonus is that as an empath people feel more comfortable with Eve and will openly confide in her.

This was a wonderfully written book with an intriguing storyline and relatable characters. I adored the character of Eve and felt a connection with her. She was smart, feisty, determined, and courageous. I loved that the author chose to write Eve as an empath because I have not yet read about a character with that ability. Empaths have unique gifts and abilities that often get overlooked. They can pick up on energy, moods, and feelings of those around them. Empaths can often sense when someone is lying and picking up on negative energy. Empaths are those that others generally feel comfortable around enough to open up and discuss things that they generally would not divulge to anyone else. How do I know this? I know from personal experience because I discovered a few years ago that I am an empath. Random strangers have come up to me at bus stops and at my workplace and told me things that they have never told another person. These individuals were surprised afterwards that they told me what they had. I can sense other people’s moods and pickup on their energy. Negative energy is emotionally draining so it is important to be surrounded by happy, positive individuals. A huge shoutout to the author for giving the character of Eve the unique ability of empath. This book had action, suspense, mystery, intrigue, and a few twists and turns that kept me reading until the end. I anxiously await the next book in this amazing series!

This is the first book in the Eve Sawyer Mystery series. Short but enjoyable, this is an easy read.
The writing was descriptive and easy to follow, flowing easily. The characters were interesting, plenty of suspects and suspicious interactions, occasionally leading to red herrings designed to leave you guessing. The storyline was great, I really loved the premise and direction the book was taking. But, while I enjoyed the idea/plot of the story and felt it held a lot of potential, at times it felt a little rushed and as a result underdeveloped. I would have loved for the book to be longer with more depth to the characters and clue discovery as at times it didn’t sense to make sense why/how this occurred. Despite this, I still enjoyed this as an easy, quick and engaging read.
Overall, if you’re looking for an easy read with interesting characters this is an enjoyable read.

Eve Sawyer is coming up on the end of her semester in her journalism class and she has a final paper due. Her paper is completed but on a recent trip, she crossed Murder Creek and became intrigued by the name. As she researched the area, she learned of a cold case and decided she wanted to further investigate it. She approaches her professor, asks to take an Incomplete for the time being on her paper, and proceeds to find herself researching the case of Lacey Walken.

Eve has no idea the clues she’s going to unravel and finds herself possibly in harm’s way too.

This short little read took me just over an hour to complete. It held my interest the entire time and the story was very well written. I look forward to more reads by this author!

This is a nice, clean, cozy mystery and a great book for younger readers getting into the genre. Our main character could be in school for investigative journalism but I feel she would have been better as only a detective. She was good at talking to people and linking things together. I think instead of random details about food the author could have included more on the main character, like her love for writing or other details in her life showing her connection to nature. I enjoyed the ending, I like that she solved the case and more with what happened to Lacy.

Eve is a character that you will love. I fell into the story right from the start. She got hooked on the story of Murder Creek just as much as I was hooked into her story. I couldn’t put this story down. I loved how much her passion kept her going as people tried to divert her attention away from the mystery. This is one of those stories that keeps you engaged because of many things. The characters are quite entertaining. The mystery is one that you have to keep going because you have to figure out who did it. People turning her away just had the opposite effect, she just kept going. This is a quick read and I can’t wait for the next story to come out.

I thoroughly loved this book. It was a short read and I was so wanting more. I love these types of stories and this one did not disappoint me. Now this book would be suitable for young readers wanting to dip into crime books. It was well written.

Eve is drawn to Murder Creek and the disappearance of Lacey. So much so that she asked for an incomplete on her paper for school so she could write on this particular case.

What she uncovered at Murder Creek was not only answers but peace about a murder many years before Lacey disappeared. I loved how the author gave credible information and sources. This book shows that all it takes is one piece of information and a whole more will unravel.

I was in between a three and a four star rating after reading Murder Creek. This is the authors debut novel which could attribute to some of the issues that I had throughout the book. While I was really enjoying the mystery aspect of the story and getting into a good flow the author would randomly stop, at the end of a chapter, seemingly mid thought, only to drop us back into yet another different place, or different thought. The abrupt changing of chapters, thoughts, and actions really pulled me out of the story. It wasn’t hard for me to fall back into it because as I mentioned it was a really good idea, the story could have been amazing. Maybe with more practice the author might be able to smooth the story out a bit. I will definitely read another book by this author and find out.

Dreams about people from long ago, current reality in a town place called Murder Creek, and delicious food- what isn’t there to like? My favorite part of this “whodunnit” is the clever way the past is connected with the future and Eve attempts to solve a cold case. Even the minor characters are well-rounded and I enjoyed the snippets of Southern hospitality throughout.

Ultimately, this book explores whether friends or family have thicker ties, and how to relive a character’s remorse from a choice he made years ago. Well-written, quick read.

Murder Creek (Eve Sawyer Mystery, #1)Murder Creek by Jane Suen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Murder Creek was different. It kind of reminded me of the show Cold Case. The author presented the story in a different light. Instead of local police looking into a cold case, it was a student. Not only a student but one who is studying journalism.
Eve came across a story of this missing girl who was never solved. She felt it was her need to dig and do this girl justice. So much so that she asked her professor to give her an incomplete, so she could use this story as her semester project. Not realizing what she would find by digging. People were reluctant, people really didn’t want her digging, and others told her what they knew.
What was the question she was trying to answer, what happened to Lacey Walken?
The author put together a wonderful investigative mystery that keeps the reader wondering. I’m typically really good at figuring things out early, but it even took me some time navigating before I got there. Which kept me interested, kept me intrigued, and made me want more. Which to me is exactly what the author is trying to do with their work.
So if you like cold case mysteries, give this shorter story a try. I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

If you are nosey like me you’ll keep reading this book regardless of how much you aren’t sure about how it is told. The story line was real quick. It does feel like there is a lack of detail but it is a good story. A lot of twists and turns that are unexpected but they hit you all at once. It was worth reading to the end and learning what happened at Murder Creek.

A quick, easy cozy mystery. The author puts together nice little story that is week developed, even in its short fashion. It is an easy read with very straight-forward writing and is engaging enough to finish in one sitting.

While I enjoyed this story, it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. I would have enjoyed a bit more depth to the story and characters, but understand if the author was trying to write a simple cozy mystery. It was at least enjoyable and I’d pick up another by the author in the future.

This was a quick mystery read that focused on main character Eve and her investigation for her journalism class. She is drawn to a twenty year old cold case. The small town has dark secrets that she is uncovering and as a result someone doesn’t want her to keep digging. Will she solve the case? Or will she be the next victim? It is well written and keeps you turning the pages. For being a shorter book it was a good read. I would recommend it and cannot wait to read the next book in the series!

This book was a quick read. It was inviting and sucked me into the story quickly. Eve Sawyer is in college and becomes fascinated with a road sign about Murder Creek. She decides to write a paper about the disappearance and assumed murder is Lacey Walken. I struggled a little bit with the large amount of characters and keeping them all straight. But it didn’t keep me from wanting to know what happened with Lacey! There was a twist towards the end of the book, and I absolutely couldn’t put the book down then. Great story!

Murder Creek (Audio Book) by Jane Suen – Review by Torey Foster

Murder Creek is a story of a journalism student working on a story of a disappearance that took place 20 years ago at Murder Creek. Lacey disappeared leaving only a bloody scarf behind. Eve is drawn to the case and believes there are dark secrets to be uncovered and not everything is as it seems in this town. The more she investigates, the more danger she is in, as not everyone wants secrets revealed and they will do everything they can to prevent her from digging them up.
I have to say I really enjoyed this story. It has a great plot, full of mystery and danger. I would definitely recommend you buy the book, BUT NOT THE AUDIO VERSION. I really struggled listening to this reader. It was like she was trying too hard to act throughout the whole reading, to the point of distracting from the story. She would be reading a suspenseful or scary part but would talk super soft like you would talk to a small child. Her tone did not fit what was happening in the story at all and for me, it made it hard to listen to and to keep my attention on what would normally be a book that I couldn’t put down. I would have preferred a robot voice. Justice was not done to this great story, in the audio version, but I would definitely recommend you read it yourself or use the text-to-speech option.

Eve Sawyer is a journalism college student. She had her report done already, but felt there was another mystery to solve in Murder Creek with a disappearance long ago. In this town, she meets many people, pulls out clues from interesting sources, and you wouldn’t believe the result! Absolutely a great read!

Eve is a college student who happens to come across a place called “Murder Creek” in her travels.  This totally intrigues Eve, and after some searching about this place, she stumbles upon a cold case of a woman who disappeared years earlier.  Eve is drawn to this story and decides to investigate further to write her research paper on for her journalism college class.  Little did Even k now once she opened up old wounds…secrets come out.
If you love a story with a cold case mystery feel, deceit, lies, secrets, twits and heartbreak…definitely listen to this book. Wow!! What a story!

An intriguing murder mystery with a few twists along the way. Being in the head of a journalist on a mission was interesting and made you feel like you were doing the investigating. I would have liked the mystery to be a bit higher stakes and make it more exciting to follow, but it was interesting none the less. The ending was so heartfelt and concluded the mystery in a great way. I will definitely be looking for more from this author.

A fantastic audio book! This author never fails to entertain me with her writing and I love that I never really know what I’m going to get when I decide on one of her books. I thought the main characters took a little bit of time for me to warm to but once I did I thought she was great! She was definitely determined to find out what happened to Lacey! The narrator really brought the story to life and I certainly felt like I was right there with eve collecting clues and trying to find out what. Happened.

Overall a great audio book and one that I would highly recommend.

I truly enjoyed listening to this fast paced story as much as I did reading it.  The narrator did an amazing job of bringing the story and characters alive. Her different tones pulled me in and I found myself lost (caught up) in the story and nothing else got done.  I’m a huge fan of this author and I’m definitely going to check out more audio from her. Get ready to be taken on a journey of  mystery and suspense  in Murder Creek as  Evie tries to solve the mystery of the disappearance of Lacey Walker.
