Savage Lies: A High School Bully Romance (Hidden Valley Elite Book 1)Savage Lies: A High School Bully Romance by Isla Vaughn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Beware: This book contains mature content that some readers may find disturbing.
4.5 stars
Coming hot off the heels of the prequel Savage Start is the first Book in the Hidden Valley Elite series is Savage Lies. Thankfully this book is 201ish pages so we can get our teeth into this story unlike the prequel which was only 55 pages. Having said that make sure you read the prequel first.
This is an enemies-to-lovers, new adult, sports high school bully romance. This is dark and scandalous. Some of my favourite things. Being a high school romance, it is full of angst and drama, dark lies and secrets, jealousy and bullying. It is as intriguing as it is intense, and the fury and hatred is palpable.
She thought a new place would hide her truth and secrets but, in a world, where the Elite exists nothing could be farther than the truth. She has made a deadly enemy but she may have lost a battle, but she will not lose the war.
He is one of the deadly Elite, the Academy’s football stars, privileged boys who rule on and off the ground. Those who play to win and anyone who stands in their way is taken down. They are playing a dangerous game where lies and lives are at stake. She is now on his radar and revenge is sweet.
There are characters you will love to hate and others you will hate to love and others you just want to reduce to ashes.
It does end in a cliff-hanger. I can’t wait for Savage Truth. Who will win this war?

Savage Lies

This book isn’t my first in this series, as I read the prequel – Savage Start. I loved this follow up. However, this one is not a standalone. I wouldn’t say that you need to read the prequel, but know that this book does not end with any resolution. Rather, it definitely is going to be continued with the second book. This book is the perfect balance of chemistry and animosity. Cole and Riley are such complex characters and their story only continues to get so much more complex. I definitely cannot wait for the next book. I definitely recommend it as it is going to be a beginning piece in an absolutely amazing series!

I can’t wait for the next book to come out! I’m hooked on this series! I read the prequel and now that I have read Savage Lies. I’m so happy! My only issue is it ended so quickly, I need the next book. I want to finish this story! These two characters are amazing. I love how the author has written the animosity as well as chemistry between them.
Cole and Riley, what is there to say. There’s so much hate between them. But they can’t stay away from one another. Riley feels Cole is a rich spoiled kid, when in reality Cole has other motives for his hate. Unfortunately for Riley he’s taking it out on her. Cole wants to break her, but she’s stronger than he realizes. He doesn’t know what she came from, but he wants her gone. Especially since she’s now living in his house.
Their story doesn’t end in this book, but it does have you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what’s next. What will happen between them? This is the beginning of a series I look forward to reading in its entirety. Two sets of brothers that are cousins, each being coupled into two books as the focus. What else could you ask for?
Who else wants to jump on this wagon with me? I guarantee if you like enemies to lovers romances trust me when I say this series is perfect, but they have to be read together. No standalones here.

After reading the prequel story I could not wait to start this book. I wanted to read more about these characters and see how their story would develop. This style book is one of my favourites and I think this author does an amazing job with this one. I was hooked from the moment I started reading and I became absorbed with the characters. They have such a strong connection that could be felt in every interaction.
This author has a really strong writing style that draws in the reader and it is one that I really enjoy. I really loved reading this book and I cannot wait to read more by this author.

I was so excited about this one after reading Savage Start. The tension between Cole and Riley builds throughout this book as Cole’s anger toward his father increases. This started a little slow for me and didn’t pick up until about 1/3 of the way through, but once it did I was unable to put it down till I was finished. I will be anxiously awaiting the next book in this series.

This was a fast-paced read, and the characters are well-written. While I admit, Cole was very irritating to me, I understand his reasons for not wanting his father to find happiness; his treatment towards Riley goes beyond the pale.
Riley, is truly a fish-out of water in this new life her mother has put her in. While she is treading water, she must remain strong, especially when it comes to Cole and his minions. I am looking forward to more of their story.

This one is no different. This is the first book in this series and what a great start it is. I found this book to be well written and hard to put down. A story that had me coming back for more and characters that pop off the pages. They are connectable and bring life to the story. They added so much to the story and made it easy to read. They bring emotions to a new level as well as secrets and danger. There is great growth of the plot which added to the entertainment of the story. I can’t get enough! Riley and cole both have skeletons and what makes the story so angsty and frustrating is the lack of communication. But I can understand not wanting to divulge your deepest darkest secrets to someone you don’t even know or can’t trust. The chemistry between Riley and Cole is off the charts. It’s nice to see that although cole wants to ice her out, he doesn’t want her hurt, that shows he does have a heart and feelings towards her. I can’t wait for the next book and to see what becomes of Riley and Cole and their relationship, as well as what kind of man her father is to instill this fear her and her mother have.

Cole and Riley.. fire and ice.. Cole is successfully getting under Riley’s skin and slowly figuring out the secrets in her life. Will their attraction bring them together or push them apart? From the looks of it, the answer is both. These two have had a multitude of trauma in their lives and their parents are not helping.

I cannot wait to find out what happens next – this novel ended on a cliff hanger. I’m sprinting to read the next one in the series!

Oh my, Riley and Cole meet again. I must say, he has some set of cojones to act like that. Big bully that needs his butt set straight. I enjoyed getting to read more of their story. Getting some more background into where Riley came from helped set the tone and the mood. Cole’s need for revenge is setting up some bad stuff down the pipeline and I can’t wait for book 3 to see what happens. This installment of the series will have you right on the edge because it is intriguing, exciting and drama filled. The elite 4 and their ”witches” create problems. The characters are so well done. If this were on TV, I’d be glued. I’m glad it’s not, the picture in my head is so much more. I couldn’t put it down. The nightmare Riley had gave me a nightmare, so I’ll give a trigger warning DV. But this a must read romance that will pull you in and not let you out. The story is believable and relatable. These characters could be kids from your town. The drama, well, let’s just say that we’ve all been there. A must read. Definitely a series on my Best for 2023.

I loved Savage Lies. There’s so much about this book that’s addicting. I was waiting for this book after the prequel and was so happy when it came out.
I absolutely love Cole and Riley. They are both such strong characters but there both find themselves getting somewhat attached even if they don’t want to admit it to themselves because they hate eachother.
I totally understand how Cole is so against the thought of Raelyn.
I love the friendship Riley is finally able to form with someone and Cassie is perfect for her.
Cannot wait to see what Savage Truth has In store.

This book by this author is one that I was really not prepared for! It was so full of twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting, even though I read the description of the book before I started! I couldn’t put it down! The brain character takes you on a wild ride as he deals with his own self induced trauma of keeping the secret for so many years. I love how the author really breaks down every layer of his intense emotional strain. I didn’t want to put this one down for one second! Of course there is a warning necessary for anyone who is unable to handle the sensitive topics covered, please be advised!

I loved the prequel and couldn’t wait to read more on Riley and Cole and the “Elites”. This book did not disappoint in the least!
We get all that comes with a bully book, and I enjoyed getting to know more about these characters.
Cole is obviously still hurting from the ending of the prequel but trying to move on with normalcy in his senior year and then add in Riley and it’s a mix of emotions that only high schoolers can have.

I will not give anything away detail wise as I don’t want to possibly spoil anything at all. I cannot wait for the next book as that ending had me trying to flip the pages that weren’t there.

Just as a fair warning that this book does talk about a sensitive topic so do read it at your own risk. Ben has nothing to gain by slumming it for lack of a better word but he has everything to lose. When he lets himself be talked into going to a party with a few friends he never intended becoming a witness to a S.A. He has carried this guilt of not coming forward with him for forty years and is now finally ready to come forward. How different would his life had been if he had made that call all those years ago? This story is told from Ben’s point of view so we get to delve into his thoughts and emotions. Although he did not speak up for the victim at the time he was ready to right a wrong. This is definitely a story that will have you engaged from cover to cover.

The Summer I Went CrazyThe Summer I Went Crazy by Laura Koerber
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is an emotional and engaging read, which grabbed my attention from the first line and held it until the last. Written from the point of view of Ben, a well educated young man from a rich family, who spend their summers in Europe. Ben was on a fast track to success, off to Yale, with family connections to plenty of influential people and future job opportunities, and then, he witnesses a rape. Although at the time he’s not sure if it is rape, as he is drunk, as is the girl and so is everyone else, but it plays on his mind, for forty years until he makes a phone call. At the heart of this book it’s a coming of age story, but it’s also an honest and sensitive look at how a rape affects all those involved. It’s an original storyline, in that it’s written from not only a young man’s point of view, but also from a witness to a rapes view point, and I think it works well. It’s a difficult read, as its so well written I felt totally immersed in the story, and so felt everything that Ben did. The difficult subject matter is written about with sensitivity, and the story definitely gets the reader thinking. After all the story shows how one drunken summer night can change your whole life.

This book is honestly not something I would normally read but every so often I like to try something different and the synopsis piqued my interest so I thought I would give it a go. It was a good read and I liked that it was different. The author wrote about the trigger subject really well and I found I have a connection with the character as we followed the story. The author did write the story really well and it certainly had some thought provoking moments, although I’ve not been in the situation like Ben its interesting how you can imagine how he feels and the guilt that he has carried for the past forty years. It was interesting to follow his story of self-discovery whilst dealing with what he witnessed all those years ago.

This was my first read by this author and it was very good! The material is a bit dark, but it encompasses the life of a rich, high school student so well. It’s written in first person and written just as a high schooler would write it. The realness of the situations mentioned is refreshing because they aren’t corny interactions. I really enjoyed this book.

This book is so real. Privileged kids who think they can do anything they want with no consequences, sadly that happens all too often.
I loved this book. I very rarely rate a book 5 stars unless it is Stephen King, however this book deserves 5 stars, there are a few grammatical mistakes but that does not take away from the story at all.
I was pulled in so well that I felt all the emotions that Ben was feeling. I absolutely could not put this book down. The struggle within himself about what was wrong and what was right, what had happened to Claire that night and what was the right thing to do. Should he tell or should he try to forget about it? It was tough seeing this young boy struggling with what to do and the guilt of what he has witnessed. I felt every single emotion with him and at times I felt sorry for him as he realized no one was in his corner and at other times I really wanted to shake him and say “Ben, you know the right thing to do, now go and do it”. However I also realized the trouble trying to understand as a teenager, the struggles within himself. I loved Phoebe and her family, they were great to me, they did break the law sometimes but they loved adventure. Would Ben’s phone call 40 years later be answered and would they ever get closure?
This is one of the best books I ever read and it will stay in my favorites, as I often reread my favorites. I will be looking for more books from Laura Koerber as she is an amazing author.

⭐️⭐️⭐⭐ Book Review

Trigger Warnings: Rape

Ben had it all: an expensive private school education, summers in Europe, and an admission to Yale. When he lets his so-called friends Clint, Rob, and Marty talk him into attending a party he doesn’t realize the choices made that very night will affect him for the rest of his life. Constantly regretting not coming forth with what he saw, Ben wonders how his life could have changed if he would have been honest. Now forty years later he is making the call that he hopes will help clear his conscious.

The Summer I Went Crazy is a remake of Coyote Summer. It is a thought provoking, coming of Age novel. Laura Koerber knows her way around dark, sensitive topics, writing with such detail and compassion. The problematic decisions made by these teenage boys causes a lot of pressure and guilt. To see Ben go through the different parts of his life with this one decision weighing so heavily on his mind was a perfect example of why we have to think before we act. One decision can affect you for the remainder of your life. Koerber does any amazing job making these characters believable and relatable in so many ways. This book will send you on an emotional roller coaster ride.

The Summer I Went CrazyThe Summer I Went Crazy by Laura Koerber
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a really emotive read. The author does a great job with the characters. While the subject matter is a bit hard to read the author handles the subject in a way that is respectful but allows the reader and insight in the thoughts and feelings of the people involved and the repercussions of the incident that took place. This story is fast paced and has turns in I didn’t see coming.

When Ben finds a young girl at a party, naked and very drunk he is horrified to discover that in her drunken state there was guys taking advantage of her. Unsure of what to do to help her being in a drunken state himself he locks the bedroom door to stop anyone else entering the room.
Since that night Ben has been terrorised with images about that young woman. Did she consent to what was happening to her? Was she even aware of what was going on? And if she wasn’t aware or didnt consent does that mean his best friend is a rapist?
This story is seen through the eyes of a privileged young man with the world at his feet and feeling untouchable with his friends. After what happened with Claire his world starts to unravel as the guilt of what he had witnessed starts to eat away at him.
This book is very emotional and the writers writing will make you feel every emotion that Ben is going through. All the anger, angst and guilt really jumps off the pages at you.

The Summer I Went Crazy is a thought provoking story that wrenches your gut. When a high school boy is witness to a rape at a party – one that his friends participated in… what does he do? How does he rectify that act within his own heart and mind? The story is hard to swallow because the content is so real – things like this happen more often than we like. The characters in the story hook you in- I could feel their angst and I just wanted to help. This is an emotional read, one I was hooked into right from the first pages.

The Summer I Went Crazy by Laura Koerber- Review by Roxsanne Lesieur.

The Summer I Went CrazyThe Summer I Went Crazy by Laura Koerber
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It all starts in high school, the last year of high school to be exact and the unforgettable summer which came along with it. The first thing you need to know is that I liked to party, get drunk, get high and forget the trials and tribulations which went along with a prep school education, summers in Europe, hobnobbing with the elite, a future in an IVY league college and following in your families footsteps, being a high flyer and successful.

One party in particular that summer stands out, well two in all honesty, the first where I got way too wasted and witnessed a rape, albeit at the time, I wasn’t sure that it even was, the second was where I was abandoned by a friend in the middle of nowhere, at night and off my head, but those two parties changed everything and not in the same ways.

They both led me to girls, the first one I wanted to help and protect and the second led me to a girl I fell head over heels in love with, we broke laws, spent time in nature and she taught me why I needed to change my direction in life, it began with a phone call and it ended in a promise, now, the time has come to make another a phone call, a phone call to someone I haven’t spoken to in years and who were close, but now are strangers, but will they answer and listen to what I have to say, only time will tell? This is a story of summer love, transition, responsibility and growth, which is told through the eyes of a teenager whose expectations do not equal reality, but told with a supernatural tint which engages you with the story even more.

Let me start out by stating that this book contains a trigger warning as it contains and focuses on rape. I have to say that this is a very well written book and it tackles the subject of guilt very well. This book definitely made me feel so many emotions, to the point where I was crying at various points throughout. This is something that I think is a very well written mark. I think it took a good look at how the choices we make can live with us for years past when we make the choice. I definitely recommend this, especially for those who love books that feature growth in their characters!
