This book starts off with the fictional retelling of the Chicago fire of 1871 and quickly introduces the main character Emma. The story follows Emma as she grows and matures into a wonderful character full of intrigue and strength. My heart hurt for Emma learning exactly how and why her mom died. You can tell this family is tight knit and that they’d do anything for each other. I love the happy ending to her last case she was involved in. With Emma and Dora both finding closeness again with that case bringing them together. Even Tim and Tony being such a huge part of their lives and becoming family in the process.

Finding the newspaper articles from her mom, I knew something fishy was going on when the writer pushed her out of his office without giving her anything.

I was relieved when the “watcher ” was revealed and it was someone who was protecting her from the same people that hurt her mom. She is very aware of everything and I loved how she made and left baskets of food for her “watcher”. Like he thought he was all sneaky and not being seen.

Since I did read these out of order I am glad this book gave some back story that I was missing out on from reading a later book first.

This is such a great series to read to suck you into the mysteries of Emma’s life. I also loved on this one how the “narrator and Dear One” chime in with some input to give more back story when needed.

I love this series. I read the other books and didn’t realize I was missing book 1. So thankfully I was able to get it. Although I had read the others before this, I never felt like I was missing anything. I loved every minute of this book. The character development was excellent, and the story line kept me hooked the entire time. I can’t wait to see what else is next!

I haven’t read much about 19th Century Chicago before but this book had it all. Hidden, mysterious happenings, a great female protagonist and a great cast of characters! It was wonderful to see a female heroine being taken seriously in this time period and Emma is not without a few tricks up her sleeve which definitely kept me amused and reading long into the night. Highly recommended!

This is what I am talking about! I have read a couple other installments in this series, and was blown away by the authors ability to teach the reader a thing or two of the history of Chicago, New York, and a few other places and things throughout the creative stories of Emma, Dora, Tony, Tim, and Papa of course. I love the narrative in which their stories and the novel is told, and because of all this, I find this series to be a very healthy addiction, to say the least.

Now that I know the true beginnings of this family, and what occurred to have Emma develop within the other installments, it makes me want to read the entirety of the series over again, as I am thoroughly enjoying her character, am able to relate to their family, the character development and world building is very well done, as always, and it makes me want more. I look forward to spending more time cuddled up in blankets learning, and aching for these folks over and over again. Will be recommending to those looking for a solid historical mystery!

Notebook Mysteries ~ Emma (Notebook Mysteries Book 1) by Kimberly Mullins – Review by Tara Johnson Barnes

Notebook Mysteries ~ EmmaNotebook Mysteries ~ Emma by Kimberly Mullins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Emma is the first book in the Notebook Mysteries Series. The book is set in 1881 Chicago, and centers around the rebuilding of Chicago after the fire of 1871. Sixteen-year-old Emma spends most days working early mornings at her family’s bakery. She has a thirst for adventure and is determined to explore the City of Chicago beyond the usual areas of her home and her family’s bakery. She decides to approach her Papa with the idea of helping the delivery boys who work for her family bakery with their deliveries on the days she does not work at the bakery.

Although Papa is reluctant, he knows that Emma is a strong and determined girl who can take care of herself. This was something he made certain of after Emma was kidnapped and brutally beaten at the tender age of six years old. From that day forward, Emma was determined to never become a victim again and learned to defend herself. With the help of her Papa, who enlisted the help of several experts through the years, Emma learned self-defense skills such as knife throwing. With those skills, Emma felt prepared to venture out into Chicago and learn more about the city she lived in.

With her little black notebook in hand, Emma sets off on a series of adventures while helping with deliveries through various Chicago neighborhoods. What started out as an adventure and a way to explore different areas of Chicago soon turned into a series of mysteries that needed to be solved. With her keen sense of observation and trusty notebook Emma soon realized there was some odd goings-on within some of the neighborhoods. The more she observed and took note of, the farther she delved into the dark side of the criminal underworld. Before long, the mystery came full circle and brought her back to her own family and the death of her mother during the Chicago Fire of 1871.

I loved this book and thoroughly enjoyed following Emma on her adventures through Chicago. The character of Emma is well written, and the reader cannot help but admire her strength, courage, determination, and zest for life. Emma is a girl who knows what she wants and does not allow anyone to stand in her way. She has a sense of fashion that is well ahead of her time and is not afraid to flaunt her bold style, regardless of what others might think or say about it. She does not allow anyone’s opinions or judgement to change who she is. These are all qualities you cannot help but admire in young Emma. I absolutely loved the author’s writing style in this book. It was unique and interesting to have Dear One pop into the story every so often as the Narrator told Emma’s story. It was a style of writing that added interest to the story and was unlike anything that I have ever read. Bravo to the author for thinking outside the box and adding this unique writing style to the story!

This is the first book in the Notebook Mysteries series. It’s a great introduction to the character of Emma.
This is Emma’s story of how she went from being a small girl, to the loss of her mother, working in the bakery her mother ran, and eventually finding her own feet in a career that most didn’t think was a woman’s place. However Emma is amazing at solving Mysteries and her amazing observational skills and note taking make her a great detective.
This story is a rollercoast of emotions from happiness to sadness, its full of adventure, danger and intrigue which keeps the reader guessing and reading wanting to know more.
I especially loved the touch the author does with the recipes along the way. It’s a nice little twist you don’t see very often in a fiction story.

This book is a really good read and i can’t wait to see what other Mysteries and dangers Emma will face as she continues to follow her dreams of being an investigator and what Mysteries will come her way.

Notebook Mysteries: Emma is the first book in the Notebook Mysteries series. I have read other books in this series and was glad to pick this one up. Set in 1881 Chicago, we meet Emma a teen who works in her family’s bakery. She wants to do more than work in the bakery and finds herself on quite an adventure. I really enjoyed this series, and this book did not disappoint. I enjoyed getting to know the characters especially since I know where the series goes in the later books. This is a great series for young adult and/or cozy mysteries book readers. I look forward to reading more books in this series or from this author.

Notebook Mysteries ~Emma is the first book in the Notebook Mysteries Series. I’m a huge fan of Historical Cozy Mystery and this author knocked it out of the park. I was pulled in from the beginning and found myself lost in the pages of this wonderfully written mystery. Emma is a young woman who works at the family bakery but what she really wants is something more adventurous. When a opportunity presents for her to help the boys on the delivery wagons she takes it. Emma finds herself being pulled into case after case each one seems more complicated than the last. What will happen when her family gets pulled in? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I look forward to reading many more books by this author.

Emma Evans is working within her family’s bakery but is fed up and bored, seeing the things the delivery boys get up to she convinces her father to go into the delivery side and that’s when it all explodes into action.

So, as she goes into the underworld of Chicago she gets caught up with gangsters and corruption which she decides to investigate and throws her deeper into the dark world, but can she save herself and solve the crime in the end, you will need to read to find out.

What can I say other than I loved this adventure, this is the first book in the series and although I have read the others in this series, I thought I would go back to where it all starts and was not disappointed. It was brilliant to see the interaction between Emma and her family and to see the start of the strong, witty character was great to read.

The story is full of the action and great writing within the other books, and you get to see Emma as the young woman just starting find her feet and confidence, as always, her spirit and gumption is there fully to see. The flow of the story was great and a brilliant mix of tension and action, plus the dotted receipts of the German delights was a lovely thought also. I can’t wait to read more.

This is book one in The Notebook Mysteries series and the third book I’ve read in the series. The story starts in the preface sometime in the future, where the narrator (we aren’t told the name) is deciding to write a book, but doesn’t know where to begin. After going through the collection of notebooks, she decides where to start the story. Throughout the book the reader is interrupted by the narrator and Dear-one as she’s writing the story. This is an interesting way to tell the story of Emma. Even though each book can be read as a stand-alone novel, this book gives the majority of backstory of the characters, as well as more details into setting. The author also includes recipes mentioned in the book. German chocolate cake wasn’t made the way it was made when I was young. I felt more pulled into the historical time in this novel. It was a nice cozy mystery for the young adult genre!

This was a lovely and endearing story and one that I really enjoyed. The author transported me back in time with her beautiful writing and descriptive language. Emma is a great character to read about, so inquisitive for her age. I enjoyed reading about her. The author really does have a wonderful writing style that keeps you engaged the whole way through the book. The characters were well thought out and I think this was really evident with Emma’s character, she was so much more than just your average 16 year old from that time period. She was really refreshing to read about and I loved that about her.
I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

The start of something good
I have loved every book in this series. Unfortunately I read all the others before this one but that just means I will have to read them all again – lol!
It was so great to see where it all began. Emma is a brilliant character – strong willed, full of inspiration and desire to help others. The book has suspense, drama and mysteries to be solved and 16 year old Emma is right at the forefront ready to do some sleuthing. The world building is excellent with the imagery of the township and townspeople so vividly depicted. Even though each book is a new mystery I highly recommend that the series be read in order as there are ongoing threads that develop throughout the series.

Set in post civil war Chicago this fun, adventurous novel is the first in this series. I have read several of the books in this series and decided after the last one that I should go back and read them in order and include the beginning of Emma’s story in that. I absolutely love this series! The characters are very well developed (even the secondary characters) and you will love, hate, laugh and cry with them. If you haven’t read this series it is so worth your time and if you have read some in this series but not in order it is so worth your time to go back and do it in order!

Notebook Mysteries: Emma is the first book in the Notebook Mysteries series. We meet Emma when she is 16 years old living in Chicago with her Father, older sister, and extended family. She works in the family bakery while longing for adventure. As she observes the different goings on around her she finds herself being pulled into more and more adventure; and some danger. I loved that Ms. Mullins also includes recipes from the bakery in the book. You get to learn about Emma’s unfortunate background and see her relationship with her sister and father. This is a fun and wonderful start to the Notebook Mysteries series.

This series is quite interesting to me, as I read 2nd,3rd and 4th books in sequence before and finally came to read the first one. So I have seen Emma at her helm as a matured woman who is quite independent and solves mystery cases, and now come back to read where it all began.
So it was good to see Emma, who along with her sister were bored in the bakery. Emma, training under special tutors and finally Emma taking on dangers head on.
I really enjoyed “the becoming” very much. This book was more like a prequel to me, and the foundation is set very right for the series which it would be in the next three books.

Emma works in the family bakery but she’s hungry for more and for adventure but as a girl back in the 1800’s her options and rights were very limited fortunately she manages to twist her fathers “ rubber arm” to join the delivery wagons and start her adventures ….

This was a read that attracted me for various reasons . Emma’s spirit reminds of my youngest daughter who is fearless and it feels like Mulan vs Nancy Drew going back time , that’s how I described it some of the girls who asked me about what I was reading

I must just say thank you for adding the most delectable and mouthwatering recipes🤗

I’m looking forward to some more fun and adventure ❣️📕

Can you just imagine what a second-generation German bakery must smell like? Sixteen-year-old Emma works in her family’s bakery, and the way the desserts are described makes me long for a scratch-n-sniff right there on the page. They make German Chocolate Cake, German Butter Cake with Egg Liquor, Berliner Pfannkuchen, Snickerdoodles, and more. Honestly, I had to look up a few of the desserts named in the book to get a visual. Kimberly Mullins was even nice enough to put the recipes in the back of the book!

Look at me jumping to the food. Let me tell you about this brilliantly engaging story of Emma and her escapades. Emma is very observant, and smart. She writes in her little black notebooks of all the happenings of each day. She has someone following her every move, and that is when that mystery grabbed my attention. When she is not working in the bakery, she is helping with the deliveries, and this is where another mystery begins. Let me just say that this story is full of other stories. There are mysteries (yes, plural), a bit of romance, an eighty-year-old that teaches her to throw knives to protect herself, and family secrets that come to light.

You cannot go wrong with this book! Please excuse me while I go get the second book in this series.

This is such an inspiring series for young readers. Emma is a forward-thinking young woman. I started this series with book two, but this one was every bit as good. Emma is working in the family bakery but finds herself wanting some adventure. When one of the cases she is looking into turns serious she must decide what will happen with her family. How will she be able to keep them safe? This book is easy to read. I myself had a little difficulty getting used to the style of writing, but the story flowed well and of course the characters were great.

Emma (Notebook Mysteries, #1)Emma by Kimberly Mullins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Emma is a young woman is 1881 who lives in Chicago, she has always had an analytical and logical mind, but it goes into overdrive when tragedy strikes the family during a large fire in the centre of the city ten years before. As Emma struggled to cope with the loss and even though it was over a decade ago, she still remembers what happened that night.

Nowadays she is older and working in her families bakery, she enjoys the works, even though it is hard and has some early starts, but she also is also wants more adventure in her life and so she asks to go out on the delivery wagons with the boys. Her father reluctantly agrees and she goes out with two of the ones her family trusts the most, but as she goes on the rounds and notes down her observations in her faithful notebook, she starts to notice patterns emerging, the patterns show everything from robberies to murders and eventually, she acts on these inconsistencies and makes the business owners aware of what she has discovered and then leaves it up to them to do their own investigations.

However, she can’t leave certain ones alone, especially when she gets closer than her family would like and finds that all the individual observations lead to something which endangers not only herself, but her family as well. Will Emma be able to solve the case using her skills and smarts, or will danger come in and sweep the investigation and maybe even her life away? This is a mystery with a female detective who is reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes and not afraid to get her hands dirty to solve the cases she becomes involved with, it is a story which will captivate all audiences and keep you on the edge of your seat throughout.

This is a great series!! I have read these books out of order but have thoroughly enjoyed reading about Emma and her family.

Emma is a pretty determined 16-year-old young lady. After the death of her mother, she takes over working at the bakery. She is the only other person who knows her mother’s secret recipes. She feels like she is being followed or watched everyday as she goes to work and this intrigues her. Emma keeps a notebook full of observations that she makes so she adds this one to her list.

Working at the bakery isn’t fulfilling Emma’s needs for adventure so she starts moonlighting as a delivery boy with Tim. It’s very frowned upon during that day and time! She sees so many things that she spends quite a bit of time each evening writing down observations in her notebook. It’s then that she realizes that she may have just solved a crime and gets her foot in the door at Pinkerton’s.

This is a very enjoyable book! It’s full of mystery and intrigue, along with a small amount of romance. I recommend this entire series!!

I truly loved this book, as being an avid Sherlock Holmes lover and being born and raised in Chicago, I was very much drawn to this novel and all it gave. I loved the author’s writing and descriptive skills!

Emma was a wonderful lea heroine. Really loved her attributes and do or do do not, there is no try attitude. She was resilient and strong. A great role model in fact. I loved her quest for the truth no matter what it took! The book was a good read as the author really played on time frames and descriptive words. I felt I was transported to the time of this book and where it took place in Chicago. It was a trip I certainly enjoyed. The action fell short of nothing but the best. I was gripped and held and turning pages, felt I was aside Emma in her mystery beforehand trying to figure things out before it was too late! Wonderful, fun and light heart feeling read! I really enjoyed it! Look forward to reading more in the series and partaking in Emma’s adventures and mysteries! Loved it!
