Shifter Shorts by TK Lawyer is a mix of Paranormal/ Fantasy / Shifter Romance stories that are short stories each focuses on different characters. My only complaint is I wish they were just a bit longer. Couple of the stories felt a bit rushed in spots. This collection contains a mix of shifter romance, dark romance and paranormal fantasy. My favorite of the collection would have to be Gargoyle Mine. I was definitely surprised by the shark shifter story as I’ve not read one before. I will say there may be some content that may be a trigger for some. I enjoyed reading this book and highly suggest reading it. I look forward to reading more from this Author.

The Alpha of the Powder Pack, Mason, has resigned himself to a life of raising his son alone. That is until his wolf gets the scent of his mate in his bar, Riley. She is a biologist and has recently returned home hoping to help in the community. Mason of course knows from the first time he lays eyes on her what is happening. Riley on the other hand is not knowledgeable of supernatural beings which may or may not cause problems. The idea of being in insta love due to the Moon Goddess (or any name that the author gives to this unseen character) having chosen someone has always made me kind of skip of that part of the first meeting, but the author made this seem natural. I have really enjoyed her approach and take on this supernatural being. These stories, at least the first two, seem like they can be read as as a stand alone, but I have a feeling we will see some of these characters in future stories. Even if we don’t it is worth it to read them all.

Derek and Annabelle seemed like they were going to together forever. After her family was torn apart by divorce she left the pack and went on to become a well known and respected wildlife photographer. However, her father is dying and she must go back to help settle his affairs. She has a bunch of mixed emotions about returning and doesn’t know what to expect. How will she be received? Derek didn’t think he would see the love of his life again. He was left with no explanation and a broken heart. He had managed to move on with his life, but now that she’s back he won’t let her go. A really enchanting book. The short stories cover multiple shifters, from Big Cats to Gargoyles and everything in between.
WE start with Elorah and Rowan, we meet Terra and Bryant,Ezekiel and Lorena to name a few.
Many of the stories could easily continue on to a full length book, and there were certainly 2 that I feel I need to know what happens. Saying that I found the book easy to read and enjoyed the ability to start and finish the stories in one or two sittings.
I will certainly be looking for more from this author
Didn’t realize these were a bunch of shorts stories but I still enjoyed them. Not my typical reads but it definitely had my attention. Loved the diversity of all the characters! Shifters and all that, is something I’m rather new too but nothing I’m against. If you want some hot shifters and a quick read, pick this one up.

In these series of stories, you have 6 different couples. I loved reading these stories, but definitely do not let the lighthearted cover fool you. I thought it was going to be a lighthearted series of stories that would get my feel goods going. Boy was I wrong. The hellhound story threw me off because I was not expecting something that I would normally read with such a lighthearted cover. Once I got over the hurdle that my brain was processing over the cover vs what I was reading, I got to fully enjoy the stories. They were as the cover says short. Each was a quick read with it’s own good story. A lot of steam in each story as well. My only complaint would be a little better detailed content warning simply because the hellhound story is a little darker than the rest of the stories.

This is a quick read of several shifter stories of various shifters. Stories were short but had enough plot to keep you interested and also wanting more. I didn’t realise when choosing this book that it was short stories as I usually pick a book by the cover unless it is a large book. I was pleasantly surprised. I have always enjoyed this author and this book didn’t disappoint.

This was a new genre of stories for me to read; outside my normal range of stories. I loved that each story was a unique shifter tale. I had never thought of shifters as anything but werewolves. It was refreshing to read and see the different perspectives. I do wish there was more to read of each story but of course that wouldn’t make it a short story. Definitely will try to read more stories by T.K. Lawyer.

T. K. Lawyer is a first time author for me so I was excited to read something new. I loved the fact there were 6 very different short shifter stories; it wasn’t just normal shifter stories. There is a big cat, a gargoyle, a Hellhound, a dragon/vampire hybrid, a wolf, and a great white shifter. All very different, and several I’ve never even thought of or seen in other stories. The characters were a little underdeveloped, but that could just be because they were all sort sorry stories. The world building was pretty good, even with the shortened length. The reader is transported into forests, cities, the ocean, and even the underworld itself all through the storytelling of T. K. Lawyer. Some of the stories I would love to see as full length books and a couple are definitely better left as short stories. Overall, a quick, interesting read by an author I wouldn’t mind checking out more from.

Shifter ShortsShifter Shorts by T.K. Lawyer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Shifter Shorts is a collection of six short paranormal romance stories, each featuring a human woman and a male shifter. Most of the stories are independent of each other, but A Mate for Draco picks up at the end of Release the Hellhounds and resolves what would otherwise not quite be the HEA we’re promised.

My favourite is Gargoyle Mine. The idea of a gargoyle shifter watching the world from the side of a building is cool, and something I hadn’t come across before. This story is also less dark than some of the others which I appreciated. It hints at broader aspects of the characters’ lives, leaving spaces for the reader’s imaginations to elaborate on the short story.

I also enjoyed Haven. Again, this isn’t as dark as the others and the nautical setting makes a nice change!

This collection gets three stars from me. I think it has quite a specific target audience as the stories have a lot of similarities including the women often ending up in dangerous, sometimes quite violent, situations they need rescuing from and the men having the end goal of mating for life. If this appeals to you, here are six stories you’ll love!

Pursuit into Darkness (War of Destiny Series Book 2) by Theresa Van Spankeren – Review by Lucinda Morton-Phillips

Pursuit into Darkness (War of Destiny #2)Pursuit into Darkness by Theresa Van Spankeren
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the 2nd book in the ‘War of Destiny’ series by Teresa Van Spankeren and takes place 70 years after the first book, in the late 16th century. You can read it as a stand-alone book, but you will get more understanding of the characters if you read the first book, Lost Souls.
Julia and Adam are living peacefully with the other members of the group (ka-tet) that form part of the Resistance in London. She is learning how to use her new abilities and fighting skills to take on the vampire Valentino when the time is right. Unfortunately, Valentino arrives in England, bringing matters to a head and forcing the hand of the Resistance, leading to tragedy.
Once again Julia suffers confusion when she hears a dark voice in her head and cannot trust what is real, concluding with her making decisions that will have far-reaching consequences.
The writing hits its stride in this book with the story flowing well for the most part. There is one section where the change seems to come out of nowhere, but makes sense for the story in the end.
The characters in the book are well-rounded and developed, with an emotional depth. I wonder how the group will be able to continue on, but I guess I will see in the next book.

I absolutely enjoyed reading the book. I had not read book 1, but I felt the author was able to recap book 1 without it feeling like it was being repetitive of book 1. I thought this was an interesting take on the vampire world and the author did a great job of making you feel like you are transported back in time to the 16th century England. This was a wonderful story full of friendships, romance, intrigue, and action. I thought that the author had a unique voice and the story was well written, with well-rounded characters and detailed descriptions. I definitely enjoyed seeing the relationship between Julie and Samuel progress and change as he works with her to prepare for a battle she isn’t ready for. Julie is an interesting protagonist and I enjoyed seeing how her character develops. I can’t wait to check out book 3 to see what happens next.

Impending devastation and death. Book two in the War of Destiny series starts off roughly eighty years after the events of book one. Some positives are that Julia has Adam at her side and somewhere over time she has just stopped existing and started too truly live again.
1582, back in London and enjoying a peaceful life when one dream, to meet Queen Elizabeth, comes true but everything changes in the same night. Events set into motion that can’t be undone or deterred. A strange dream, a ten-year-old girl and “tarot” cards tells Julia her future, one filled with loss, evil, death, sacrifice, and betrayal. Unsure of what the meaning is more strange things begin starting with a nap.
Can Julia decipher the strange future she was told in time? Betrayal is coming but from who? While this is the second book, I understand how it could be a standalone if starting with this book. That said I feel that it would be like starting a movie forty-five minutes in without context or background on what led to the events or the significance of the situations. Such as Julia finally having Adam at her side or who Marie was to Julia. The continued growth of Julia in discovering herself more and evolving with everything she faces and overcomes. I cannot wait to start book three, Between Darkness and Light. I devoured the first two books in just a few days, once I started, I couldn’t stop.

Lost Soul (War of Destiny Series Book 1) by Theresa Van Spankeren – Review by Ayla Phipps

Lost Soul (War of Destiny # 1)Lost Soul by Theresa Van Spankeren
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Heavy emotional rollercoaster. While I have seen Theresa’s books over time while working at a library, I hadn’t previously given them a read until now. One of my new years resolutions was to read books by as many new authors as I could, and this series always looked interesting. I must say I was not prepared for the deep emotions that I would be taken for a ride with, but the book had me holding my breath from start to finish praying Julia could get a win.
Julia is in modern day London but as she writes her biography, we are taken on the journey of who Julia is and how she came to this point. She is over half a century old, and a combination of things has her getting flashbacks to her past life, her human life. The only way to be rid of the flashbacks is to confront them and discover what the importance is in them. 1492, Julia was born and while her childhood was mostly wonderful considering nothing prepared her for what was to come after overhearing her father and brother speaking when she was eleven. At fifteen she was to marry Gregory Smith, a man wealthier than her own father had asked for her hand and while it was not the man, she wanted to marry her father accepted for her and that was final. All Julia ever wanted was to have the power to make her own decisions about her own life. To have control. Immediately her younger sister informs her of the uneasy feelings she gets around Gregory and the urge to flee from the room he enters, but it’s too late she has no choice but to marry him. Crystal, her sister, warns her to be careful. What follows the marriage and in the first two years is heartbreaking, not only what Julia experiences at the hands of her husband but of her own father.
Will Julia find an escape? Can she have a happy moment that’s not tainted with painful consequences? The world the author builds is based off history, the times in which the story takes place are accurate which makes reading it so much more painful as some today still deal with similar situations. The characters have immense strength and fight to overcome all that they are faced with. Finding one thing to fight for to keep her going. I have found a new author and series to follow and now off to book two, Pursuit into Darkness to see what happens next for Julia.

Shifter Shorts by TK Lawyer – Review by Lorralei Hoerner

4 Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Shifter Shorts is 6 “short” stories that I truly found quite enjoyable. If you love paranormal/fantasy stories with some alphas, sizzle, drama and fated mates, this is a really good read. I love the uniqueness of these stories as the shifters are gargoyles, dragon/vampire, hellhounds, cats, wolves and shark. As each story has its own blend of shifter and mate, each couple is trying to navigate feelings while trying to figure out next steps and survive dangers with an HEA, which I love.

While I enjoyed all 6 stories, my favorite story was “Gargoyle Mine”. I loved the gargoyle shifter and found it very different and quite enjoyable.

Each story left me wanting a bit more, so I am looking forward to more stories like these from this author.

This was an interesting read. I have never been the biggest fan of short stories but this book is well written. It was nice to be able to complete a story fast and know the ending,

Each story is well written and you get easily wrapped up in the stories. The fact that the characters are well-developed and grow as you read about them in such a short while makes this a good book.

This book also has a good amount of spice to it that will get you going. Read this book to read the journey of a few different shifters and how they handle each of their unique situations.

Song of Earth and Claws (Faelands Series) by Lena Abram – Review by Francis O’Sullivan

Song of Earth and ClawsSong of Earth and Claws by Lena Abram
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Song of Earth and Claws is a fantasy story set in a world of fae where clear rules and procedures dictate how politics and justice are acted out. This includes how and in what circumstances revenge should be taken, and how kingdoms can be lost and run.

The main character, Lannahi, is a young adult and daughter of a powerful king. Secrets from her past mean that she has to work strategically to keep her family safe. She has to make a bold and dramatic gesture that will make her vulnerable and isolate her, but could also bring her power and, eventually, safety.

I enjoy the world created in this story. There are clear social structures which mean that actions and decisions have inevitable consequences. This adds to the tension of some of the more dramatic scenes as we wonder what the knock-on effects will be.

The over-the-shoulder narrative lets us see how Lannahi analyses different situations and chooses her course of action. Her naivety can be frustrating at times but serves as a reminder of her youth, and that she wasn’t intended and therefore adequately prepared for the world she has ended up in.

This book gets five stars from me, and I look forward to reading more Faelands books! I’d recommend it to fans of high fantasy who enjoy stories with intrigue and romance. Particularly if you like books with lots of music in them, this is for you!

This collection of “shorts” is a cute, sexy, easy read. Different couples, different shifters, different situations. All determined to get their mate.

This is not my first story from this author so I knew things would be steamy and interesting to say the least. Most of the stories in this collection I enjoyed more than others. With my favorite two being Gargoyle Mine and Haven. I would have loved a different ending for Release the Hellhound, but I did like the way Mate for Draco wrapped it up.

Many short stories are just a tease, a sample of a couple and their situation. Oftentimes I find it difficult when reading to get the full picture. A few of these shorts are that way, here’s hoping this author writes more about these couples because I really need more shark shifter and gargoyle stories!!

This is the second book in the series and can be read as a stand alone. I did not read the first book before this one and I felt like I didn’t miss anything that would make this book hard to understand. What I did feel was missing was more of the background story. I am sure that I would be given that in book one. So, it isn’t super important to read the first one but you might want to, to have a better understanding of what each of the characters are going through and have been through. This book has everything you could possibly think of for a book to have. It has intrigue, mystery, the evolution of characters, and an amazing plot line. Speaking of characters in this book, they will run you through the ringer. I have gone from loving them to hating them back to loving them. It felt like a viscous cycle but it is worth it in the end. I promise. If you have loved any vampire story, this is going to be a series that you will want to read. I am not normally a reader of paranormal, I will but it isn’t always my first choice. However, this book made it enjoyable to read and I will go and read the first one because this book takes a jump forward in the time line of the story. I have a feeling that I will feel even more connected to the characters by doing that. Maybe, I will even have a roller coaster of emotions again.
