Throwing the Curve (Playing for Keeps Book 2) by Lauren Fraser – Review by Jules Herbert

Throwing the CurveThrowing the Curve by Lauren Fraser
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Filled with wonderful characters, plenty of heart and some steamy moments this is a book you don’t want to miss. It is the second book in this particular series and can be read on its own and enjoyed but why do that when you could read more from this talented, creative author.
Peyton and Ryan really do not like each other when they first meet but they are then forced into faking a relationship that all too soon starts to feel very real. Neither of them actually wants a relationship which is why it is so much fun seeing them totally fall for each other. No path to true love runs smooth of course and the storyline created in this book is such fun to explore. Some of the side characters really had me wanting to kick their butt! I can’t wait for the next book in this fantastic series.

Throwing the Curve is the third book in the Playing for Keeps series by Lauren Fraser. It is a contemporary sports romance (baseball) with a bit of an enemies to lovers element, fake dating, finding love unexpectedly, opposites attract, friendship, team dynamics, drama, chemistry, and angst.
This is Ryan and Peyton’s story, and although I liked the premise of the story, it didn’t ‘blow me away’ like I had hoped it would. And as with the last instalment, I thought it was an ok read- again, this just missed the mark or me.
I really had trouble connecting with the characters, and so that prevented me from fully immersing in the story and/or investing in the characters and the outcome of their tale. I have also read similar stories in the past, which made this quite predictable.
But, having said that, if you are looking for a quick and easy sports romance that has just enough angsty drama to keep things moving, then this might be the book for you.
The series contains:
-Too Far (Book #1)
-Everything to Me (Book #2)
-Throwing the Curve (Book #3)
-Sliding Home (Book #4)  (releasing in July 2023)

Happy Reading…

Thank you, Lauren Fraser.

Terrific sports romance. Peyton dumps first class loser for an all-star. Peyton finds herself in a predicament with Ryan and has to go through fake dating with him for a bit. This story was quite entertaining because deny it (as they tried), the chemistry was there. They fell in love. The drama, hijinks, and watching Andy get whats coming to him is worth it. My favorite part is seeing Ryan help at the center. These two are wonderful. It’s a book worth reading. There’s action, baseball, and loads of fun. The characters are exciting. The writing is modern and keeps you engaged.

Everything to Me (Playing for Keeps Book 2)Everything to Me by Lauren Fraser

This is the 2nd book in a series of standalone contemporary romance novels. I had not read the first book and didn’t feel that I was missing any necessary information. It was also my first time reading this author’s work and I was pleasantly surprised by how my I enjoyed this book.
I do love the ‘brother’s best friend’ trope and this book is a great example of this. Kendall has always had a massive crush on her brother’s best friend Pete. When Kendall has to visit their city for work, she stays at Pete’s house as her brother is away that week. So while the cats away the mice certainly do play. The chemistry is off the charts hot and when they get together it’s hot and steamy.
I loved both Pete and Kendall. I also really liked Kendall’s brother Ryan too. This author has a knack for writing really great characters that are relatable and that you get invested in.
Like many romances set in the sports world, there is a great camaraderie among the players, and this is something I really enjoy reading. Again, this author does a great job here. I loved reading the banter and the ribbing that they give each other, yet they always have each other’s backs.
This is a really great romance novel that I would recommend to other readers.

Everything to Me (Playing for Keeps Book 2)Everything to Me by Lauren Fraser

An enjoyable and engaging sports romance which was a real page turner. Kendall has been in love with her brother’s friend forever, but he’s always seen her as his friends annoying sister. However, things change when professional baseball player, Pete Saunders, agrees to let Kendall stay with him while she’s in town. Although Pete is known as a bit of a player, he’s never broken the ‘bro-code’ before, “Rule number 1- don’t touch your friend/teammate’s sister. Rule number 2- see rule number 1”, but Kendall is way to tempting for him. Kendall and Pete start a relationship behind her brothers back, but Pete only does casual and he doesn’t believe in true love, so have they even got a future. I liked Kendall and Pete as they were likeable and relatable characters, and their chemistry really sizzled off the page. I also enjoyed how their relationship developed throughout the story. The storyline was fairly fast paced and the out-of-bounds relationship theme kept me happily turning the pages.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’m a sucker for these types of books. Everything to Me definitely fit the bill. The author pulls you in with the untouchable storyline that develops into so much more.
Pete, a kid from the wrong side of the tracks, is now a professional baseball player. He has everything he ever dreamed of. Well almost everything. When his best friend’s little sister shows up at his door on a business trip, he’s reminded of just that. One problem is that she’s off limits. Her brother Ryan would never approve of some like him to date her.
Kendall thought she could have a fling with her childhood crush to get him out of her system. That was her plan when she called Pete for a place to stay. Unfortunately it takes some convincing due to his close relationship with her brother. Never did she imagine she would struggle to stick to the terms. Or to fall even harder for him.
The author weaves a tension induced web around them that is about to go up in flames.
How does Pete feel about all this?
Will Kendall and Pete move forward?
The biggest elephant throughout, does Ryan find out?
It’s a sweet story I was sucked right into, and I think you will be too!

This is one of those stories that flows really well and you don’t want it to end. I’ll definitely be reading more by this author because I really enjoyed their writing style. Everything to Me is a book about Kendall, a successful marketing associate who is in love with her brother’s best-friend, Pete, a professional baseball player. Kendall had a crush on Pete since she was a teenager, but he has never seen her that way. She tries to push her luck though when invited to stay with him while she is on a work trip in his hometown. Very quickly the two of them have chemistry, but Pete is nervous about this chemistry because he knows his best friend would kill him for sleeping with his sister. However, how can anyone resist a beautiful, intelligent, and cunning woman like Kendall – she basically persuades him a secret fling is a good idea. Is a secret fling ever a good idea, especially when feelings were already there? Will he have those same feelings for her? If he does, will his past allow him to enjoy those feelings? Is she worth losing his best-friend over?

I just loved this book for so many reasons. One, this is one of my favorite tropes – brother’s best-friend, plus it was a quick read. Two, the characters are so loveable. The banter and playfulness between them is authentic. Also, I am not a girl who really enjoys a slow-burn – well, this was far from it. Within the first chapter, shit is laid out on the table and we are moving!!! The chemistry between Kendall and Pete is amazing! I would love to read more of this author’s work!!

This is book 2 of the series but can be read as a standalone. The characters Pete an Kendell were so fun, witty an provided steamy details in the bedroom! All the while hiding it from her brother Ryan. That always makes it that much more fun but dangerous. What happens when he finds out? Must read to find out…

Kendall is in the city for work and her brother sets her up to stay with his friend Pete while she’s in town, whom she’s had a crush on forever. Pete is a pro baseball player not expecting anything but the awkward little sister coming to stay. Now, he wants nothing more than to break bro code and jump into bed with this sexy, smart and confident woman in his house. They agree to a casual fling while in town but both quickly realize they want more don’t won’t admit it to themselves or the other.

What an amazing fast paced sports style romance, throw in an out of bounds relationship (brothers best friend) and it brings a twist to the story. I found this an engrossing and relatively quick read (this means I did have a book hangover the day after starting it, as it is hard to put down).
We follow Kendall and her teenage crush Pete who is also her brothers’ best friend and team mate. Can she work her feelings out of her system whilst staying with him? Can Pete manage to keep his emotions out of the mix and continue to have a close working relationship with Kendalls’ brother Ryan.
Kendall follows her feelings and after her job has finished she moves home, but has not manged to get Pete out of her system.
We follow their relationship as it builds and blossoms until her brother finds out.
Fast paced and the characters grow into likeable images and you just wish them a happy ever after.

This would have to be one of my favorite books at the moment! Sadly, I was not able to read the first book in the series but I’m So Thankful that I was able to read this book without having to read the first one. It’s a standalone. It’s a smart and sexy best friend sister sports romance. She (Kendall Graves) is off-limits, but this pro-baller (Pete Saunders) has never been one to follow rules. Kendall has always been in love with her brother’s friend for as long as she can remember. She has always just been his buddy’s annoying little sister. Until here recently. When a professional baseball player agrees to let her stay with him while she’s in town, it never occurred to him she’d tempt him to break bro-code. Rule number 1- don’t touch your friend/teammate’s sister. Rule number 2- see rule number 1. I highly recommend this book to anyone love loves reading sports romance. I’m excited to see what the author has instore in the coming future.

I LOVED this story! It is a smart and sexy best friend sister sports romance! Those are two of my favorite tropes meshed together into one amazing story! The characters are written very well. They made me laugh and feel for them. My favorite character is Kendall. She is so strong and I loved her standing up for herself as she goes for what she wants.

Secondary characters are wonderful! While I enjoyed Kendalls girlfriends Mooch is the one who brought a smile to my face. Nothing special he did but the way that everyone reacted to Pete’s relationship with him.

Overall this is one of my favorites this year! I laughed, smiled and chuckled while reading this. I couldn’t decide whether to read faster to find out what happens or slower to never let it end.

I look forward to more!

Quick fun read
This is a sports based, best friend’s little sister romance book. It was a quick read for me. It had a decent base of a story but seemed to lose traction a bit towards the middle and then took off again. The attraction at times didn’t sizzle as much as I thought it could. (I do enjoy a bit of steam in my books). Kendall and Pete are a great couple and I really loved the dual POV. Overall a good read for a lazy afternoon.

Holy cow!! This book is non-stop fun and steam. Loved every word and second of it!!

Kendall goes to spend the week with her brother’s best friend, Pete, whom she has had a crush on since she was 12. Now she is all grown up, he notices. Kendall is willing to try a casual hook up just to have a chance to be with Pete. Pete and Kendall agree. Soon, Pete is catching more than line drives. The shadows of each’s past haunt the possibility of this new relationship. Can they each find a way to balance their baggage and dreams for the future?

This was my first experience with this series and author. I am now a fan for keeps.

I am always a sucker for a good sports romance novel as that is the types of romance novels that I am always reading and finding myself enjoying, so when I heard about this book, I knew that I had to read it!! This book was a great one that I read in two days and could not stop thinking about it. The story revolves around Kendall who has been in love with her brother’s best friend, Pete, for as long as she can remember. She has to come to town to do some business for her job and convinces him to let her stay with him and have a no strings attached week together. Reading this book, I was on the edge of my seat as I had no idea which way this would end as Kendall and Pete are both strong willed individuals that don’t particularly like change. I fell in love with this book, and I cannot wait to reread it over and over again as well as read more books by this author!

Everything to Me is the second book in the Playing for Keeps series by Lauren Fraser. It is a sports romance with a brother’s bestfriend element, finding love unexpectedly, multiple POV’s, drama, and chemistry.
Going into this book, I didn’t realise that this was the second book in the series, and even though it could be read as a standalone, I can’t help but wonder about what happened in the first instalment, and maybe if I had read that first, then I might have enjoyed this story even more as there were a few instances where I felt like I was slightly missing something.
I did like the premise of the story, but feel like it just missed the mark or me. I also feel that it could have been even better if it had more sizzle, a steamier story, especially considering what the story is supposed to be about.
Maybe it’s just me and I was having an off reading day when I read this- so I will probably go back and read it again in a few weeks just to see if I feel the same way.

Thank you, Lauren Fraser.

Kendall has fantasied over her brother’s best friend for years, as a awkward teenager who was always in the middle of them she only dare to look from a far, but now grown up she has an opportunity to put that attraction to the test.

Pete’s best friend has asked him if he minds putting up Kendall while she is working in the city, when Pete agrees he is unaware that Kendall has turned into a sexy, smart woman who knows what she wants. So, when she puts a proposal on the table will he give in and break the “Bro-code” rules or will a little bit of fun with no strings fly under the radar.

Although as both get to know each other as adults’ feelings start clouding the fun and can both just walk away when the week is over.

This is the first book I have read by this author, and I thoroughly enjoyed the light-hearted, easy read story. The two main characters are well suited to each other and the way they interact is refreshing and just heart-warming. I liked how the story builds along the way and the dilemmas both have when realise the feelings are deeper than they both initially thought. It is great that this is part of the series and hope we get to see them in the next book.

I can’t wait to read the book in this series.

Everything to Me (Playing for Keeps Book 2) by Lauren Fraser. I am loving this series! It can be read as a standalone but I prefer to read them in order. Its the story of Kendall who goes to stay at her brothers best friend’s (Pete) house for a week while she is in town. Kendall has also had a crush on Pete since she was 12. Pete has always been a good friend because he won’t break bro code. Kendall is very much in charge and she plans to proposition Pete. She thinks she can sleep with him and get him out of her system. Pete is a real heartbreaker and wouldn’t hurt a fly especially his best friend. He is always willing to help everyone out when they need it. They are both super good people but will Pete break bro code and go for Kendall or will he continue to deny Kendall her fantasies. The chemistry is strong between these two and its such a good read!

This is the second book in the series but can be read as a stand alone. That is what I did. This book has tons of steam and is a very quick easy read. I got sucked into story right away with how the female lead (Kendall) behaves. She is upfront with all the feelings. The book gives a back story so you can see the growth. I love that Kendall isn’t a push over or a needy female that can tend to happen in some sport romance books. The leading male (Pete) is a perfect example of your typical boy next door. He is kind and follows the bro code of not dating your best friends sister. This book was fast paced and I wish there was a little bit more to the romance of them falling together. I loved that the characters were able to grow throughout the story. The journey that they take feels genuine just a little lacking in verbiage. It really is an amazing book and a very simple read. I feel like I am just being picky with wanting more romance between the two of them. The steam is there and it is a “fan yourself kind of heat.” I do recommend this book for a quick little beach read, I mean if you’re already red from the sun – no one is gonna notice the lush you get while reading some of the scenes in this book.

I love a good sports romance and this one absolutely hit the spot! Kendall was an amazing female protagonist and a very powerful woman. Pete was hot and sweet. A textbook example of a book boyfriend if there ever was one. I loved that Kendall didn’t hide her intentions and that there wasn’t a lot of monologuing and pining. Sometimes you just want to get to the action! Overall I would say this is a solid sports romance, perfect for fans of Elle Kennedy and Lyssa Kay Adams! This book sounded so promising. I love a good brother’s best friend forbidden romance. This story follows Kendall who stays at her brother’s best friend Pete’s house, who she has crushed on since she was 12, for a week while she’s in town for work. One of the reasons she agrees to stay with him when her brother recommends it is that she sees this as an opportunity to play out her fantasy and sleep with him that week to “get him out of her system” after years of silently loving him. This is where things went south for me. It was just a few pages in, and she was immediately propositioning him with sex and trying to convince him to sleep with her even though he was declining it. I did not like the way she kept pushing it and did not seem to take no for an answer. If the roles were reversed and the man was pushing the subject it would NOT be okay. There was no romance between them and there were no reasons for us to understand why she has loved him since she was 12 besides his good looks. Nothing he did was swoon-worthy and their relationship was so surface level. I enjoyed Kendall’s work-life storyline, her love of sports, and her relationship with her friends, but I was really missing a lot in the romance department. There was also a lot of miscommunication and misunderstandings. Neither of them was completely honest with the other, which caused all their issues. The back and forth with emotions and miscommunication was very confusing and disappointing for me. This had decent moments but was overall a miss for me. It lacked genuine romance and substance for me to cling to.

Everything to Me (Playing for Keeps Book 2)Everything to Me by Lauren Fraser
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Everything to Me by Lauren Fraser is book 2 in the Playing for Keeps Series. I haven’t read the first book, and fortunately, it can be read as a complete standalone!

It is one of my favorite genres, a best friend’s sister sports romance. Their chemistry gave me butterflies, and their romance gave me all the feels. One thing that was quite different to me, but in a very good way, was that Fraser wasted no time in these two acting on their feelings for one another, of course, more lust in the beginning but it doesn’t take long for the feelings to develop.

I loved both Kendall and Pete. Kendall wasn’t just beautiful, but she was also independent and intelligent. She knows what she wants both professionally and personally. However, there was a softer side to her. She was very vulnerable in love for Pete, and Fraser did a great job of showing that.

While Pete had the typical reputation with the ladies, he really was a softie. He used his talent and wealth to help others in any way he could. He valued his friendships, especially with Kendall’s brother, and it was so much fun watching him fall in love with Kendall.

While this is a genre that can be overdone, Fraser made it fresh and witty. For instance, there was steam and spice, but that wasn’t the gist of the story. She focused more on the emotional attachment between Kendall and Pete rather than it just being about the sex. It was a perfect combination of the two. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to discover this new author. I’m looking forward to reading more from her.
