The Graceful Ghost by Eleanor Dixon – Review by Heather Lovelace

The Graceful GhostThe Graceful Ghost by Eleanor Dixon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This story was a beautiful find and one that I plowed through. I found the characters charming and the premise delightful. This teaches some beautiful lessons to the intended younger audience as well as reminder older readers of the same. Courage, conviction – I truly believe this is a story I will read for myself again and I cannot wait to share it with my daughters.

Broadwell is a fantastic author and Echoes kept in line with what I’ve come to expect. Fantastic world building and extremely strong characters. This dystopian fantasy grabbed my attention immediately and kept me riveted until I finished the last page. I really enjoyed how the sorry flowed and look forward to seeing how this world develops as the series continues. Highly recommend.

Nite Fire: Flash Point (Volume 1) AUDIO BOOK by C.L. Schneider – Review by Heather Lovelace

5 out of 5 stars

This is a book that all fantasy lovers should read. Being familiar with this work, I was very excited to listen to the audiobook to take the experience to the next level. And it certainly did just that. The narrator did a beautiful job giving life to each page. Dahlia became that much more tangible as I listened to the story, with each event and emotion. I thoroughly enjoy Schneider’s writing and King’s narration. Cannot recommend both of them highly enough.

Twisted Secrets (Deadly Isles Special Ops Book 1) by Amy McKinley – Review by Kerry Baker

Twisted SecretsTwisted Secrets by Amy McKinley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Twisted Secrets by Amy McKinley is the first book in the Deadly Isles Special Ops series. This author always delivers a strong story line with some great characters and this book has all the usual hallmarks.
Riley and Xander are interesting characters. They have a depth to them that a lot of characters lack and it all adds to their story. They are the kind of characters that you can’t help but get behind from the get go.
The story itself was quite a quick read but thoroughly enjoyable. I connected with the story easily and found that I read it in no time at all. It feels like this book is setting up the rest of the series and is a great introduction to some new and familiar characters. This is a great book by an amazing author and I would definitely recommend it.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Matching Miriam by Mya O’Malley is a gripping story with characters that are so strong you won’t be able to stop reading! Although we are introduced to Miriam in other books by this author this book can be read as a stand-alone.
For me this book is the perfect example as to why this author is so good. The characters are absolutely everything in this book – they are strong, engaging, have chemistry that you can feel on every page. I felt like I was fully immersed in them and their story from the word go.
The story itself is so well written – it is action packed and full of twists and turns. It was a genuinely exciting book to read. The author has done a great job at developing the plot and keeping your interest as a reader. This book is definitely worth reading and I am looking forward to what is next from this author.

Flipping the Bird (Shift Creek, #1)Flipping the Bird by Carrie Pulkinen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Flipping the Bird by Carrie Pulkinen a fantastic five-star read. This is the first story in the new shift creek series, as always with this author there are witty lines and characters you will adore especially a certain Moose, who I found weirdly adorable. But it was main character Alice who won me over and kept me hooked, her whole ethos just won me over, there is a little of everything in this story and it will just keep you going. This shows great promise for what I am sure will be an amazing series as always from this author.

Twisted Secrets (Deadly Isles Special Ops Book 1) by Amy McKinley – Review by Angela Hayes

Twisted SecretsTwisted Secrets by Amy McKinley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Twisted Secrets is the first book in the Deadly Isles Special Ops series by Amy McKinley. This book sets the series off to superb start with wonderful characters, an exciting storyline full of action, danger, violence, drama, sizzle, intrigue, tension, mystery, suspense, adventure, family dynamics, banter, humour, finding love unexpectedly, and romance. It is a bit of a spin-off from the Gray Ghosts series- so I am excited to see where it will all lead.
After a mission goes awry, Xander is forced to take some down-time to recover. He has had a string of bad luck lately- including the failed mission, and his girlfriend dumping him. He also can’t seem to shake the suspicious feeling that there was more to the failed mission than what they were led to believe.
Riley is a grad student working as a barista in a local coffee shop, to make ends meet. When her relationship ends badly, and strange things begin to happen- Xander is there to yank her to safety. Will he be able to keep her safe? And will he figure everything out? This is well worth the read to find out.
Riley and Xander were such great characters, and I really enjoyed following along on their adventure. I loved how Ms. McKinley wove a spicy romance through a wonderfully suspenseful tale- including all the mystery surrounding Xander’s failed mission and his SEAL team. The underlying storyline looks set to continue into the next book/rest of the series- so I am really looking forward to seeing what she has in store for us in the next instalment.
Another completely engrossing and intriguing read- with all the intensity, sparks, chemistry, tension, and dramatic developments I have come to expect from Ms. McKinley!

Thank you, Amy McKinley!

Happily Ever After will give you a warm happy feeling no matter the genre of romance you like. I read Don’t Worry, I Still Hate You by Marie Skye, and I really enjoyed it once I got into it, at first, I did feel a little lost and almost like this was the second part of a story, and I missed the first, but then once I got into the story, I just simply fell for Perrie and Ash and their crazy journey to each other in the most backwards forwards roundabout manner. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into the other stories.

Jordan’s Justice: A New Adult Sport Romance (Tessa and Jordan Book 2) by T. Christensen – Review by Angela Hayes

Jordan's Justice: A New Adult Sport Romance (Tessa and Jordan Book 2)Jordan’s Justice: A New Adult Sport Romance by T. Christensen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Jordan’s Justice: A New Adult Sport Romance is the second book in the Tessa and Jordan duet by T. Christensen. This is an angsty and emotive New Adult romance and follows on from Breaking Tess (Book #1)- so if you have yet to read the first book in this duet- I highly suggest you do so before starting on this one, as there is a lot of backstory and important information in that first book, which you will need in order to fully appreciate this book.
I had trouble connecting with the characters back in book one, and unfortunately I still didn’t connect with them the way I would have liked. Jordan really made it difficult to like him- he really frustrated me and made me angry with his actions, so I think that’s why he didn’t win me over- although I did warm to him a little in the end. I really felt for what Tessa had been through- but there was a lot of frustration there for me as well.
This story takes place four years after the first book, and a loot has happened since then. Tessa has moved on with her life the best she can, doing her best to move forward- but the weight of responsibility weighs heavily on her. She has no time for anything else and definitely doesn’t need any drama or upheaval in her life- but that’s exactly what happens when Jordan shows up unexpectedly turning her life upside down once again. Get set for some angsty, emotive, and drama-filled reading. How will things turn out for Tessa? You will just have to read the story for yourself to discover what happens.
I wonder what T. Christensen has in store for us next?

Thank you, T.Christensen!

The Singer and Her Song (Empire at Twilight Book 2) by N.L. Holmes – Review by Anantha Rusum

The Singer and Her SongThe Singer and Her Song by N.L. Holmes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the second book in the Empire of the twilight series, a fascinating tale of historic fiction set in Syria in the early 13th century BC. The story is centered around Uqnitum , a singer from the musical lineage, who had to flee from Mittani, which was wiped by the Assyrians, when she looses her husband and her youngest child. She flees along with her pregnant widowed daughter and her guilt makes her an abusive dangerous mother. She has to fight and get back her strength from sinking into the darkness.
This is my third book from this author and I enjoy reading her books. To start with, I loved the title of the book, it is quite lyrical. Rich, vibrant in history and vivid descriptions, this book is both informative and entertaining at the same time. The book delves deep into a range of human emotions, from anger, pity, betrayal, fear all the way to self-realization and discovery. This was a very compelling read and I hope to read more from N.L.Holmes.

I Once Was Lost but Now I’m Found: Daisy and the Olympic Animal Sanctuary Rescue by Laura Koerber is a very emotional read. It a retelling of a very massive animal rescue of a hundred and twenty four animals. My emotions were all over the place I found myself tearing up a lot but there was some anger there to. I honestly wish there were more people like these in this world. Most people don’t even realize how big of a problem this is. Find out what happens next with the rescue of these animals. This is not my first read by this author and definitely not my last. I recommend reading this heart-warming yet heart breaking story .

I Once Was Lost, But Now I’m Found: Daisy and the Olympic Animal Sanctuary Rescue
by Laura Koerber was a great 5 star read.

I had several emotional moments reading this book. I’m a HUGE dog lover and to read what these poor dogs went through at the hands of a hoarder just about killed me emotionally. Twilight put Forks on the map for most but this story has left a whole different feeling for me.

How could the town people not see what this man was doing? How could they protect him?

Daisy’s journey wasn’t easy and my heart really went out to her and the other fur babies that suffered, to see her finally get her HEA was great. I also liked how the author gave us an update on where some of the other rescues went. I will warn you that pictures and some things mentioned may be hard for some to see/read, I was in tears. This also opens your eyes to making sure you know just where your donations go and what rescue groups you support. Proceeds from this book are going to the OAS rescues which is great.

I give Isle of Wings: A Silverglen Companion Novel by E.A. Burnett, 5 stars.

The author weaves such a magical tale of fantasy that I did not want to my pull myself away from this world. The main characters are endearing, lovable but flawed. You can see them grow as they learn more about themselves and what really happened in the tragedies of their past. The story itself has so many things going on — it is a very complete story filled with every emotion possible. There were a few surprises that popped up along the way that I definitely wasn’t expecting, too.

Overall, this is a spectacular book that you will not want to put down until you are finished — then you will be yearning for more.

Matching Miriam by Mya O’Malley – Review by Angela Hayes

Matching MiriamMatching Miriam by Mya O’Malley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“She had always thought the worst thing that could happen was to get attached to someone and then have your heart broken when they left or otherwise betrayed you. She slowly began to wonder if there was something far worse than that. Was being afraid to take a risk, to take a chance at love and friendship, far worse? The old adage, it’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all, rang through her head.”

Matching Miriam by Mya O’Malley definitely makes for some engrossing reading. I have explored many of Ms. O’Malley’s books now and can always count on her to deliver a great story. This is a suspenseful crime story, woven with mystery, tension, drama, intrigue, romance, and more.
We have met Miriam previously in the Maggie Trilogy/series. She is Naomi’s neighbour and good friend- but most importantly she is a dedicated, tough, kick-@$$ cop who is now working on the toughest case of her career- tracking down the Decade Killer. This is one wily serial killer, and Miriam will find herself tested in more ways than one. Especially when her former love returns to town. Juggling matters of the heart with tracking down a serial killer won’t be easy- leaving us guessing what will happen next, the whole way through.
Looking forward to whatever Ms. O’Malley does next- she never disappoints!

Thank you, Mya O’Malley!

I Once Was Lost, But Now I'm Found: Daisy and the Olympic Animal Sanctuary RescueI Once Was Lost, But Now I’m Found: Daisy and the Olympic Animal Sanctuary Rescue by Laura Koerber
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I Once Was Lost, But Now I’m Found is a heart breaking story written by Laura Koerber. It is the story of Daisy and the Olympic Animal Sanctuary Rescue. The story is based out of Forks, Washington, but this isn’t the make believe story of vampires and werewolves. It is the true story of 124+/- dogs that were living a nightmare in what was supposed to be a dog sanctuary. Koerber describes in this book the awful living situations these dogs were confined to, and their coordinated rescue. It focuses more details on a particular dog, Daisy, and her rescue owners. Instead of a good life in a no kill shelter, it was hell on earth. These dogs were packed in a warehouse, being fed uncooked meat every other day, and left often without water or human interaction for days at a time. They were not taken for walks, they were kept in cages too small to move around, and laying in their own filth. It is heart breaking to read about these conditions, but the story has a mostly happy ending. When you read this book, have a box of tissues near by. The book got a little preachy at times, but overall, I am glad to have read it. Makes you think twice about rescues, shelters and breeders reputations.

I love reading a fantasy book from time to time. It takes you to a different world but in some ways the same as where we live. This YA fantasy has magic, danger, sorcerers, action, mystery and so much more to keep you turning the page to see what happens next. Roana is trying to run away from her past she not only lost her family but is accused of killing them. When Roana is caught on a ship she shouldn’t be on, her life takes another turn. The wonderful strong characters in this book make it so much more than just a story. The journey these characters take are life changing and you can see how they grow during the adventure. I hope you like this book as much as I did!

Rick: Ingram Brothers #3 by Roz Lee

Rick Ingram is youngest of the three boys and from what I can tell is the most guarded of the three but that makes sense since he feels like he has to keep his entire life a secret from everyone.   I haven’t read the first two books in this series yet so I’m guessing here.

There are so many things about this book that I really enjoyed and holy smokes Rick and Brett have some incredibly hot moments.  I think there was smoke coming from my kindle a few times whole reading.

Rick’s feelings aren’t uncommon which is heartbreaking to me.  I think he was comfortable with who he was, but not with sharing that side of himself with anyone. Nobody should have to hide their true self out of fear of how people will feel about them.   I hope there is a time where everyone is able to be their true self at all times.

Ms. Lee is a new to me author and I really enjoyed reading this book.  I plan on looking at her catalog and reading other books by her.

Isle of Wings: A Silverglen Companion Novel by E.A. Burnett

This is the first book I’ve read by Burnett. She has a way with the words and I love it. Burnett knows how to capture our, the readers, attention and keep it.

Roana is the only one left in her family. Her dad being a Rain Mage and the last one heard of is now gone. Her sister was training to be a Rain Mage. Now everyone blames her for their death. The quote I chose for Roana is: “I’m sure we’ll find it.”

Iniko isn’t sure how to move on with his life. With his father taken during a horrible storm. One that didn’t seem natural. After meeting Roana he knows things weren’t as they seemed. The quote I chose for Iniko is: “We need to get you to a healer. We have to walk to Taragona. Do you think you can walk that far?”

Highly recommended for YA Fantasy lovers.

The plotline is an intriguing story that has ancient secrets, pasts, and a journey that keeps the pages moving at a nice pace. The characters are fully developed and enhance the story to make the story enjoyable. The story is about Sabiya. She lives in a town that looks down on women. We watch as Sabiya starts her journey which makes this story so interesting. I highly recommend this book so that you can follow Sabiya’s journey. I suggest setting some aside because once you start reading this book you may not want to put it down.

I just had to get my hands on this book the moment I saw the cover. Ashley A Quinn is a new author to me, but I can assure this is not going to be the last novel I read by her. I cannot wait to go back and read book one of this series as soon as possible. Wildfire is the second book in The Broken Bow series but not reading book one yet was not a hindrance to this story at all.

Wildfire far exceeded all my expectations and then some. Quinn darn near set my kindle on fire with this romance and the drama and mystery that is woven through it. I adored Tara and Jace and together they were even more formidable. They just had to figure that out for themselves. I won’t give one single juicy detail away because this is one you just have to experience for yourself. You will not be disappointed. I cannot wait to get my hands on book three too!

This was not an easy read for the emotions. I was not sure if I could even keep going at times because the gut feeling I got was wrenching and will be everlasting. Imagine the ASPCA commercials with the music that would make the biggest grinch tear up but over and over for a good solid few hours as you read this. I would recommend the tissues obviously, but this was one that was ultimately worth it. I loved how the ending was some reprieve and happiness that seemed to make the sadness that fills the middle just a bit easier to sit with as you ponder what you read. This book is obviously a topic close to the author’s heart and you can tell with the care and time that went into the details of everything and the way the story flowed with conviction.

Isle of Wings: A Silverglen Companion NovelIsle of Wings: A Silverglen Companion Novel by E.A. Burnett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the story of Roana and Iniko, Roana is nineteen and is desperate to leave the Isle of Wings, since the death of her family which she has been blamed for and the taunts, songs, physical abuse and near drowning by the local children, she has formulated a plan to leave. Iniko is a young man who is working on a ship with aspirations to one day have one of his own, complete with a crew and goods to sell across Skye Lake, he also has a troubled past and secrets of his own to keep.

We start with Roana and her sister sitting with their Grandpa as he sings, tells stories and exchanges riddles with them, a memory of happier times when they were still alive, she then moves to thinking about her Nan and how she has had to leave her and her dog behind on this venture, but also regretting not leaving a note when she left to say goodbye, she only thought of getting herself into the box of baskets and onto the ship. As she is being lifted o the boat, she hears snippets of conversations until her dog makes her way onto the boat and starts sniffing around her crate and the sailors see her in there and decide to open it up, so Roana grabs her knife and as soon as it is, she leaps out preparing to defend herself, as she does, they discuss who they think she is and doesn’t notice the other porters coming up behind her, but as she prepares herself to fight, so as not to be taken to the merchant who she tried to avoid paying fees to, a fearsome woman who is rumoured to be a sorceress as well, she feels a pulling sensation and her panic begin to ebb away from her. When she has been apprehended, she is sent to the sorceress, all the while thinking about how Iniko had managed to control her, but Iniko is wondering whether she is stupid or brave, realising that she is neither and just desperate, he is also trying to place where he has seen her before, he also notices that the dog isn’t all it seems either.

As they are walking, Iniko is trying to figure things out, he realises that although Roana didn’t want to be found, she needed to be and that his intuition was something he followed trusted, he explains why Roana is being brought and much to Roana’s consternation agrees to wait with her dog as it is not allowed in the building they are walking to. As Iniko’s friend leaves him to wait with Roana’s dog he reminisces about the last year which he has spent on the Isle and what his father taught him about being a shipmaster, as well as his dream about the ship he one day wants to own. Meanwhile, Roana is escorted to a room full of hundreds of snakes to wait for the sorceress, as she is marched there, she sees things in the rooms she passes which are mysterious and disturbing at the same time, but this is nothing compared to her meeting with the sorceress herself and the conversation they have about her past, present and possible future, as well as a glimpse into the sorceresses at the same time. Roana has no idea what just occurred when she is taken away from the room of snakes and led towards the outside, but when the guard is distracted by a serving woman, she is admiring the items she can see and considers stealing something to pay for her way off the island with her dog and grandmother, however as she is trying to find her way back she hears someone approaching and goes into a room to hide, but she finds an egg of a powerful and large species of bird and on a spur of the moment impulse, she decides to take that instead. This is where Roana and Iniko’s lives meld together and as their situations become more precarious and the dangers they have brought upon themselves increase and things happen beyond their control, can they work together and use their combined skills to overcome their barriers, or will the sorceress find them and bend them to he will? The only way to find out is to travel along the path with the two and discover everything at the same times as they do, prepare yourself for a story full of magic, danger and love which keeps you guessing until the end and leaves you wanting more.

Isle of Wings by E.A. Burnett – Review by Rachel Moss

Isle of Wings: A Silverglen Companion NovelIsle of Wings: A Silverglen Companion Novel by E.A. Burnett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Isle of Wings by E. A. Burnett was a great read! It was so well written, I was instantly transported to another world. The imagery was amazing, it felt like I was standing right there on the isle with all the characters. It was very enthralling. I was first drawn to this book by the cover. It was just so pretty and colorful to me in a basic way. Then I read the synopsis and it sounded very interesting. I’m so glad I picked up this book! I can’t wait to read more from this author in the future.

Isle of Wings by E.A. Burnett – Review by Francis O’Sullivan

Isle of Wings: A Silverglen Companion NovelIsle of Wings: A Silverglen Companion Novel by E.A. Burnett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Isle of Wings is a vibrant fantasy novel by E.A. Burnett, a companion to Silverglen that can be read as a standalone. It’s a story with plenty of mysteries and secrets that kept me captivated until the end.
My favourite thing about this book is how music was used. Roana uses music in a number of ways, including to connect with memories of her relatives and to bond with animals. There’s even a flute involved which is a big plus for me!
There are some great characters in this book. Everyone wants something, and Roana has to try and give them what they want to get what she needs. I particularly like Xetsa, who finds cunning ways of getting into people’s heads and building her power and control.
I like how Roana and Iniko balance each other out. Roana is desperate to get away from her past and the burdens of her family, whilst Iniko cannot remember his past or most of his family and is desperate to regain his memories.
For me, this is a five-star read. It’s an exciting, magical book that I would recommend to fantasy fans, particularly those who like nautical and/or musical elements in stories!

The Singer and Her Song (Empire at Twilight Book 2) by N.L. Holmes – Review by Tausha Treadway

The Singer and Her SongThe Singer and Her Song by N.L. Holmes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Singer and Her Song (Empire at Twilight Book 2) by N.L. Holmes. I love these books so much. The author writes so vividly that I feel as if I’ve been to these places. Its is book 2 but it can be read as a standalone easily but I recommend reading both. This book is set in 14th Century BC and the book tells the story of refugees from the ancient land of Mittani in Mesopotamian. This little known nation has been wiped out by the Assyrians and the refugees of this fine land are all musicians. They are known to have amazing musical skills. Uqnitu is a singer that is not liked at all because of her temper and controlling ways. These things also help her in her field. Of course dysfunctional families are nothing new and Uqnitu comes from a very dysfunctional one. This book shows us horrible conditions these families are living under and building new lives from the ground up. I loved this book and I didn’t want it to end.
