Lucas the Spy Cat by Samantha Shannon and illustrated by Lei Yang is a captivating children’s book with vivid illustrations and an adventurous storyline. His family hopes to discover exactly that when they strap a camera to his collar. However, will Lucas find a way to disarm the camera before he begins his nightly mission? The reader is taken through various possibilities of what Lucas might do with other animals helping him plot missions. Each mission includes different ways to help animals. A fun and interesting story. Two young sisters eager to know what their cat is up to in the night attach a camera to his collar. They imagine many scenarios about the woods and the inhabitants, and the sisters are surprised by what they find. This book is a cute and fast read with nice illustrations. I like that there are some activities included at the end as well as some ideas to help foster conversation and thoughts with the little ones.

Lucas the Spy Cat is an absolutely adorable children’s book! It has lovely, full-color illustrations depicting Lucas, his family, and his animal friends shenanigans. Let’s face it, we all wonder what our critters get up to in instances such as this. My kiddo’s loved Jake and now they love Lucas! This author has always taken the extra step to make her books extra special and pertinent. She includes lessons, and fun, exciting ways to utilize those lessons with kids to really make them understand. She went above and beyond at the end of Lucas the Spy Cat by including a word find, pages where readers can come up with their own mystery, a page to create their own super spy, and a page where all the animals are hiding, and the reader can find them. The author even went as far as giving examples of fun ideas to get kids thinking, and using their creative thinking skills, even introducing us to the ‘real’ Lucas, and his sister Nemo. This was such a wonderful reading experience, and I can definitely recommend picking this book up.

Lucas the Spy Cat was such a wonderfully creative and fun read! I loved the activities in the back of the book as well. My kiddos and I loved every bit of this story, and the activities had us on our own magical games. Lucas goes out every night and his family is a bit curious as to what he’s up to. After attaching a camera to his collar and reviewing the footage, they can’t believe their eyes! My kids are 7 and 10, we all had a great time speculating what our own furry family members could be getting into after we go to sleep. This is such a cute book, I highly recommend picking it up to see what curious things this kitty gets into!

Oh this was just the cutest story ever! I read it to my 3 year old and he loved it! The story was beautifully written with a wonderful rhyme to it. The illustrations were stunning and really brought the story alive. I loved how it can spark the imagination of young children about where Lucas the cat may go at night, what kind of adventures he might go on. I would definitely say this story is aimed at 5-7 year olds – I can imagine them writing their own Lucas the cat adventure stories! There are talking points at the end of the story along with pictures of the cat behind the inspiration for this story and a few activities for the children to complete! A lovely touch from the author!

Lucas’ family knows that he is not like other cats. Every night he leaves and does not come home until morning. His family has their own ideas as to what he is up and suspect that he is solving mysteries in the forest with other animals. Curious as to what Lucas does all night his family puts a camera on his collar to see if they can solve the mystery of where he goes and what he does every night. Does Lucas have a secret identity as a spy cat who solves mysteries?
I absolutely adored this book and found it a fun read. It is beautifully illustrated with animals having adventures and solving mysteries together. The end of the book contains fun activities that encourage learning while doing so in a creative and imaginative way. A must read for children of all ages!

The artwork in this book is really beautiful, it will definitely draw any child’s eye and interest. The story is so cute with Lucas’ owners wondering where he is sneaking off to at night and what he is getting up to. I like that we never truly find out what he is up to, its a secret between him and his woodland friends. The last page is very inspiring, and a great lesson to teach any child.
“Just because you can’t see it yet, doesn’t mean you won’t get there. So, never let go of your hopes and dreams because they can take you anywhere!”
It is very nice that at the end there are actives that parents can do with their children after reading, not only is the book fun to read its engaging.

Short and sweet kid book. I recommend. Love the little plot twist of trying to spy on Lucas. Then when reviewing the video your in for a surprise. Can’t wait to read more from this author.
This was such a cute read! I love the rhyming scheme and the illustrations! The story was adventurous, and had a really good message at the end. My daughter loved looking at the pages but she’s a little too young for the story so she lost interest pretty quickly but I definitely plan on reading this to her again when she gets a little older! And the activities at the end were definitely a nice bonus as well! I highly recommend reading this to younger children!

Lucas the Spy Cat by Samantha Shannon 5* This is the cutest story about Lucas. Lucas is a normal family cat except for at night. When he meows goodbye and just leaves. He disappears all night and returns in the morning. His family wants to see exactly where he goes, so they attach a camera to his collar. What they discover is the most surprising. Their normal cat is busy keeping their neighborhood safe from harm and being a friend to those in need. I love that the story is not all that is included. There are extra pages to extend the fun. I also love that there is a website with even more activities. I definitely will be getting a few copies of this book for my classroom library. I also will get more of the series. I absolutely love this story about Lucas and his friends!

Very cute children’s book about the adventures of the family cat when he goes out at night. The kids are curious about what Lucas does at night so they put a camera on him to record what he does and then they spend the story speculating what adventures Lucas goes on. I love the rhyming that Shannon has done throughout the book and the sing-songy nature it gives to the story. The illustrations are very cute and whimsical. I absolutely love the ending…very cat-like 🙂

Do you have a cat and ever wondered where it goes in the middle of the night while you are sleeping away? Well, Lucas’s family wondered the same thing so they made a spy cam for him to wear. They are thinking he’s got to be out solving all the world’s problems, helping those who can’t help themselves, or just having some fun. Once he returns home in the morning and while he’s sleeping, the family uploads the video to see what he’s been up to all night long.
This is such a fun book but what really caught my eye was the absolutely gorgeous and vivid illustrations!! These really make this book! There are many brilliant colors and lots of different textures captured within these pictures. This book can be used for so many great things…pointing out/teaching colors as well as animals, learning new words, learning about technology, as well as how using imagination can take you many places! The ending of this book has multiple suggestions for creative thinking whether at home, school, or elsewhere.
A beautiful book that would make a great gift for young (and even not-so-young!) minds!

Does he party every night after problems have been solved? How in the world does he get the cobwebs stuck in his whiskers and burrs in his fur? That is up to you and your child to decide on this cute book. I love the writing style of this author who inserts many open-ended questions to assist in the creativity of our youth. It allows the reader to pause and reflect on what Lucas the Spy Cat could possibly be doing and allows him to use his imagination to create a new scenario of the forest creatures and the adventures under the twinkling stars. The illustrations are lovely. The follow- up activities are a great way to help children to understand the story and to create their own adventure using their imagination. The stories that Lucas the Spy Cat sparked as I was reading it to my Granddaughter. She had quite the story about the animals in the story and how each one specifically asked Lucas for help with some problem or advice. Love this story!

Though the family suspects, they don’t truly know where it is their cat Lucas really goes. He walks out the door at night, with a gravely meow “good-bye”, and doesn’t come home till the morning light. Lucas’ family is determined to find out where their cat goes and what he does, so they attach a spy camera to Lucas’ collar, hoping to find out the truth about his secret identity.
Mysteries & Capers
Wherever he goes and whatever he does, his family is sure that Lucas and his forest pals are solving mysteries of all shapes and sizes!
Children will love following along with Lucas and his pals as they keep their neighborhood safe a sound. Who will they save next, or what mystery will they solve? The mysteries will be surprising and, best of all, fun! Join the fun as some animals need rescuing, while others need a friend or learn how to dance.
Superheroes and Superfans
Kids will love becoming superfans by picking out their favorite colorful characters in Lucas’ first tale, part of the best-selling Jake the Growling Dog book series. These superheroes and spies help other forest creatures and neighbors with feats of strength, wit, problem-solving, giving a hand (or paw), and showing kindness to all creatures, great and small.
For the Love of all Critters!
Do you have a little one who loves animals of all kinds? Lucas’ books highlight all sorts of animals kids love, including bugs, frogs, snakes, bats, deer, raccoons, opossums, owls, cats, dogs, turtles, and many more! Your children will have a hard time deciding who their favorite is, and they can even create their own in the activity pages.
Looking for Ways to Boost Creativity & Imagination?
Lucas and his friends love telling stories, but they also want their young readers to create their own fun. After the fun-loving story, kids and families will enjoy a hide-and-seek page, making their superhero or spy, learning about ways to encourage creativity and imagination, writing a mystery, and much more! Jake the Growling Dog: A Children’s Book about the Power of Kindness, Celebrating Diversity, and Friendship (Jake the Growling Dog Book 1) by Samantha Shannon – Review by Janel Bernotas
A sweet story about Jake, a happy-go-lucky dog who happens to growl all the time. He’s not mad or aggressive. It’s just how he is. This first book in the “Jake the Growling Dog” series teaches kindness, love, and understanding. It includes some thoughtful kindness sharing exercises at the end to help children spread love and care toward others. This has become one of my favorite childrens book series!

My 11 year old daughter is having trouble with her reading. She saw me reading this and asked if she could try it. I asked her what about this book had made her ask. She said that the pictures made her want to read it. We read the book together. She was engaged and enjoyed it. Not only was it entertaining but it had underlying messaging around disability awareness, that you don’t have to go through things alone and how to face your fears. It was great to see her excited to read a book for once. I have found out that there are a couple more Jake books so will be reading them with her too. It was a good wholesome book with great messaging. Highly recommend.
