This was amazing!! I could not put it down for the life of me. I couldn’t read it fast enough. Filled with so much emotion, suspense, drama, lies, family, secrets, and mystery I was captivated from the beginning. There was so much in this book, that kept me wanting more. The characters of the book are so well written it makes you wonder if you know really them, and makes you feel like your right there in the story of them. I have to say I did not rad her first book but didn’t feel lost in this story, which is good because I could follow it and understand everything. I will be going back and getting the first book thou, because this one really caught me and drag me into a world of murder. Highly recommend.

To be honest, I was skeptical about this book, but found that I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the writing and the characters. It is a page turner for sure. I found myself not wanting to stop reading to find out where the story was going. There was a point where I figured out the twist, but it didn’t detract from my enjoyment. Sloan and Ridge were likable characters. I really loved the addition of Dylan and seeing Sloan and Noah find friendship again. I had a love hate relationship with Mom and Dad – you’ll understand that when you read the book. I’m glad a took the chance, picked up the book and gave it a chance!

This was another fantastic book by this author. It was well written and intriguing. Once I had started reading I could not put the book down. I had to find out how everything was going to play out. This author really keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout this book. She creates so many twists and turns.
The characters are really strong and fit the story well. You can clearly see the development throughout the story and I wanted to know more about them. This is a brilliant story and I cannot wait to read more.

A fast paced, dark, mystery book with twists and turns throughout. I never knew what was going to happen, and what I thought would, never was the truth. I stayed on the edge of my seat for this one. Lies, secrets, family issues, mental issues, murder, kidnapping, questions; all of it is just slammed into one book. I loved it.

I was hooked from the very first paragraph. Each chapter is a different place and time in the novel. The damaged, complex characters with secrets keep you turning the pages. This psychological thriller makes me wonder how Sloan will piece her life back together from the betrayal, murder, kidnapping, and lies. This wonderful novel digs into family dynamics, loyalty, and forgiveness. I have read other work by this author and she has quickly become a favorite!

I love books which have a good mystery so this book jumped out at me.
My concern when I started reading was when it became apparent there were going to be some jumps in time to tell the story. This can sometimes ruin it for me, but I was pleasantly surprised that I was still able to follow along and actually enjoyed the way the ‘time jumps’ helped the narrative.
There seemed to be little clues dropped throughout (some red herrings) as to what happened, and this created twists that were at times surprising and unexpected. This kept me engaged with the story and I found myself contemplating the secrets and deception even when I wasn’t reading.

I felt like I was accompanying Sloan as she faces all the difficulties of a divorce, caring for her mother and her father being released from prison. She goes from one hardship to another and just keeps getting battered as the secrets start unravelling and I was invested in the way she navigated the new dynamics and changes and how/if she would be able to come out on the other side of it all.

I thought the book was very well written, flowed well and led you down the paths the author wanted, only to turn around and surprise you. This is a skill I admire in an author as it can be difficult to surprise your audience in the way this has.
This was my first book by this author, but I will be seeking out more. If their other books are anything like this one, they have a new fan in me!

Not only was this a new genre to me, as in I’ve mainly read romance the past several years, but this was a new author to me as well and…A River of Crows is most definitely a five-star read!

I read the last 87% in 4 hours with a few interruptions.

We are taken between past and present decades revolving around the mysterious death of Sloane’s younger brother Ridge. We learn quite a bit about her father, brother, best/ex-boyfriend and a few other characters but also get a glimpse into the minds of two other characters when you least expect it.

There is such a depth to the writing that makes you feel like you are in the mind of the characters. The author weaves the story drawing you in in such a manner that you feel like you are right there beside the characters.

It was a novel filled with familial dysfunction, heartache, mental health struggles, loss, dare I say second chances and also hope.

If you are in the mood for a mystery/suspense/who-done-it/edge of your seat, keep you guessing book, you have found the perfect one. I started this book, and finished it within two days…around a 40 hour a week job, and homelife. I did not want to put this one down, and spent far more time awake at night flipping pages than was wise. This book kept me guessing, not quite until the end, because most of the lose ends were tied up before that, but it was definitely close to the end.

Sloane Hadfield is struggling with having to return to her hometown, which she’d fled many years before, to take care of her mother, who has had problems and been in and out of mental health facilities since shortly after her younger brother died when they were children. What’s worse for Sloane is that, although no body was ever found, her father was tried and convicted of the death because the father and son were alone together on a fishing trip at a nearby river. Sloane must now deal with all of the memories and pain caused by her childhood, while also wondering if what she thinks she knows is actually the truth…and just who she can really trust after all.

A suspenseful mystery that encompasses so much in the winding twists and turns with every new page. Phenomenal writing and world building, it’s as if you live among the pages yourself. A near hook from the very first page, you’re enthralled as a reader and it was diabolical how fast the pages moved for me. Great book.

This is such a good book. It is a story of a family that is torn apart by trauma and lies and secrets. Ridge and his dad went out fishing. Only his dad returns. This ends with his father being charged with the murder of Ridge. But that is really only the beginning of the story.
There is so much more that I wish I could tell you but that would involve spoiling the story. The best I can say is that this is a story you won’t be able to put down until the end. One that will keep you up long past your bed time, that you will keep reading and wish it wasn’t over when it was. These characters are amazing and the plot sucks you in from the beginning. I definitely recommend reading this one!

A crow never forgets, and neither can one family after a searing pain from the loss of the young boy Ridge and the aftermath of destruction for two families. Sloan’s life gets torn apart and even when she tries to escape her past pains, the river calls her home to help with her mother who was released from a psychiatric hospital. This murder mystery kept me captivated the entire time. “Just one more chapter” turned into an hour more than once. Lessons of revenge tearing apart a person and a family cannot be ignored.

Wow! That drowning scene that started the book was quite intense and just yanked you right in also. I was hooked to the story right then and there. Sloan Hadfield had her hands full trying to keep her life together. Her family fell apart after her brother, Ridge, disappeared. Secrets and revenge abound in this story. The crows will hold their own secrets. This story is so intriguing that you find you can’t put it down. Sloan and the others feel kind of like family. You hurt for them and feel for them. I found myself going through every emotion reading this tory. It’s a story that will definitely be on my favorites list of 2023. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. So well done

In 1988, Sloan Hadfield’s brother Ridge went fishing with their father and never came home. Their father, a good-natured Vietnam veteran prone to violent outbursts, was arrested and charged with murder. Ridge’s body was never recovered, and Sloan’s mother—a brilliant ornithologist—slowly descended into madness, insisting her son was still alive.

Now, twenty years later, Sloan’s life is unraveling. In the middle of a bitter divorce, she’s forced to return to her rural Texas hometown when her mother is discharged from a mental health facility.

Overwhelmed by memories and unanswered questions, Sloan returns to the last place her brother was seen all those years ago: Crow’s Nest Creek. There, she is shocked to hear a crow muttering the same syllable over and over: Ridge, Ridge, Ridge.

When the body of another boy is found, Sloan begins to question what really happened to her brother all those years ago. What she discovers will shock her small community and turn her family upside down.

A River of Crows is a tale of family secrets, deception, and revenge perfect for fans of Julia Heaberlin and Stacy Willingham.

So I’m usually very picky about what books I read. I’m more of a romance reader with the occasional mystery, thriller or science fiction. When I saw this book and read the synopsis I was intrigued. I couldn’t put it down. It has mystery, talks about PTSD, Abuse and Addiction. This book was so good I couldn’t put it down until I was finished. I hope there will be more.

From word one, I was stuck into this story, needing to know everything! Joel’s mental state and the protectiveness he felt from the very beginning to the other side of the coin in the more recent years of the story drew me in. I wanted to know the truth of what happened in 1932 and what happened to lead Joel to where he was in 1991 when Garrison first comes to him chasing answers. The alternating points of view and differing points in time that the story is told are fascinating, and it’s such an amazing way to share this story. If you enjoy mysteries with an emphasis on family secrets and the relationships those same secrets can change through existence, this is definitely the read for you!

This may be my favorite read of the year so far! What a well-written, researched, and gripping story!

The author developed a page-turner with their ability to create tension and the need to know what happens next in this mystery that spans across time. The characters are developed well throughout the entirety of the story and the reader finds themself rooting for and relating to them. The author also has a unique way of creating setting and bringing the reader inside the story and feel like you are really there. The details really bring this story to life.

The author tackles many challenging subjects within the context of the story and does so very well and with integrity.

Ultimately, I look forward to more by this author and encourage you to pick this one up for sure!

One of the best books that I’ve read all year!! I wasn’t sure how I would like the historical romance book, as this was my first read from that genre, however I absolutely LOVED it. It was SO MUCH more than just historical romance! There is mystery and suspense, the deepest family secrets, loyalty and love. The characters from both eras were enjoyable and the storyline flowed seamlessly. I seriously couldn’t get enough! Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a good story.
When Garrison Stark (modern day) loses his parents in a tragic accident, Garrison’s grandma is suffering from dementia and has been saying some pretty crazy things. As Garrison investigates, he begins to unravel some pretty interesting family secrets.

One night, in 1932 Joel Fitchett wonders into a diner, bloody & bruised, carrying his unconscious younger brother, Clancy. The boys tell everyone they don’t recall what happened, however they have vowed to never speak the truth of that night. WWII, two brothers in love with the same girl & a young man seeking the truth about his grandfather, leaves author Shanessa Gluhm, doing a phenomenal job keeping the audience entranced between two timelines. Best book I’ve read this year. I could not put it down and read it in one sitting. Can not recommend enough!

A fast-paced and wicked read that was near impossible to put down. This book was a dual mystery flip that followed two very different but interconnecting storylines. An unpredictable and impressive story design that captivates readers from nearly the first sentence, and the twists and wines of the story hold their attention to the very last page.

Joel, Clancy, and Garrison are all easy-to-like characters with secrets of their own that the reader slowly uncovers with each turn of the page. The twists are hard coming in nearly impossible to see, especially as we flip between times characters and their secrets. This novel works to keep every reader at the edge of their seat, and truly is a work of art whether the mystery is a preferred genre or not.

I was totally surprised by this book in such a good way. I love good mystery and story was truly fantastic. While I hesitate at dueling timelines, the author does such a fantastic job and the timelines were very easy to follow and keep straight.

Joel and his brother Clancy Fitchett go through so much, especially growing up with an overbearing father who is not to kind. Joel is beaten badly and Clancy is unconscious..what happened to these boys? Joel and Clancy cannot truly recall the events that happened on that night but only leave Joel scarred. Years later both boys are investigated in a murder…but lies to protect a pact has its price.
Fast forward years down the road, Garrison Stark is trying to put some pieces together if truly
Clancy Fitchett is his grandfather. As Garrison peals back the pieces of the puzzle…what truth truly comes out?

I love the alternating story timelines and just the heart of the matter of the twists and turns you feel for this story. Mystery, heartbreaking and the bond between brothers…..just a fantastic story and so well done.

Beautifully written novel full of mystery, secrets and both familial and romantic love. Enemies of Doves by Shanessa Gluhm is a book that will stay with you long after you read the last page.

Joel and Clancy Fitchett have a horrific encounter in the year 1932 at the young ages of 12 and 11. They won’t talk about it, but it left wounds deep that you couldn’t see as well as a scar on Joel’s face. 13 years later, as they still struggle with the past, a future personified as the beautiful Lorraine threatens to create even deeper scars.

In 1991, Garrison Stark is on a mission to find Clancy Fitchett who has been missing since 1946. Finding him will mean finding his biological grandfather and the possibility of finding a new family.

At times, when stories are told in multiple time lines from multiple points of views, the story can get muddled and confusing. However, Gluhm wove this story seamlessly with rich, flawed characters that flowed and kept you not wanting to stop turning the page.

Curl up with this book, some coffee or tea and enjoy this tale of deception, family, love, loss and finding the truth.
