If you take nothing else from my review its that you NEED to read this book. This book was absolutely amazing and I was unable to put it down. This book takes place in two different time periods and each chapter alternates. However, the story is coherent throughout and told so seamlessly.
In 1932, two brothers experienced a night that they will never forget. A night that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. This night also will shape their futures. This portion of the book then jumps ahead approximately 10 years later and we see how the boys are living now. Clancy is the brother that seems to get away with everything and has gotten lucky his whole life. However, if you ask him he is sure to disagree. He is easy with the girls, his dad prefers him (well more than his brother which is not saying a lot), and he just overall has it easy. At least that is how his brother Joel views it. Joel’s life was transformed that one night in 1932 and he was left of the permanent reminder of the choices that he made. This reminder turned him into a freak, he received a mysterious scar across his face. The brothers swore not to ever tell what happened that night. However Joel is accused of murdering his father and is sent to jail for the rest of his life.
In 1991, Garrison has just lost both his parents in an accident and his grandmother is dying before his eyes. She has been talking a lot of nonsense, but she says something that gets Garrison thinking she is telling the truth. She lets it slip that the grandfather who he has known his whole life is not his actual grandfather. Garrison sets out to find this Clancy, the man whom his grandmother mentioned. However in his research, it seems that Clancy has fallen off the face of the earth. The only link to finding Clancy is through his brother Joel. A man who has transferred prisons multiple times due to his violence. Joel is an angry man and will only give up information and an interview if Garrison can find his love that got away.
The story that evolves from these encounters is absolutely unbelievable and amazing! I don’t want to give any more information because I don’t want to give spoilers. I will tell you that I did not want to put this book down. I fell asleep reading it and picked it right up when I woke up in the morning. This is a story that you definitely should not miss.

This is a tale of wo brothers, Joel and Clancy Fitchett. The story line takes us into two worlds – from WWII to 1992.We learn the story of Joel, Clancy, and Lorraine, the girlfriend of Clancy. And of Garrison Stark, who thinks that Clancy is his grandfather. Joel and Clancy’s father is a dentist and a tough man, abusive to the boys with words and actions.

In 1932, Joel is found badly beaten and carrying his brother Clancy. The police think they know who did it, but with neither boys talking there is a mystery that surrounds what happened that fateful day.

In 1991, college student Garrison Stark is trying to uncover the history of Joel Fitchett as well as finding out if Clancy is his grandfather. You will have to read to find out if Garrison figures out what really happened and if Clancy is who he thinks he is.

This book tackles topics such as abuse, PTSD, and addiction

This was my first book by this author and it was so good! From the first chapter I could tell this book was very well written. The descriptive details that are in this book helped me picture the scenes very easily. The time jump between the 1940s and early 1990s were transitioned very smoothly. I enjoyed reading this book a lot!

To say that Shanessa Glumh killed it with this one would be an understatement by far!

The way the story line is written keeps your attention the entire time. One minute you are in the present (1991), and the next you are in the past! Throughout the book you have three different “mysteries” you are trying to get to the bottom of. But they interweave with one another, so you never get lost.

In my opinion the most intriguing thing was how Joel stayed so silent. He had so much he could have said. Yet, he didn’t.

I definitely look forward to reading more from Shanessa Gluhm.

A time hopping whodunit that will keep you reading all night. I was hooked after the first chapter, was it Clancy that scarred his brother? Did Joel really kill his own father? And is Garrison really Clancy’s grandson? Going back between the 1940s to uncover Clancy and Joel’s life and to the 1990s while Garrison learns bits and pieces about who he thinks might be his grandfather. This story will keep you turning the pages. Will Molly and Garrison discover the truth tracking down what little information they can? Is Clancy still out there while Joel is in prison? Possibly for a crime he didn’t actually commit? But seriously, you won’t be able to put it down!

Enemies of Doves by Shanessa Gluhm is easily my favorite read of the year thus far! Even when I was not reading, I was thinking about the story and wondering where it was going to lead to. I would sneak in a page or two while cooking, while I ate lunch on my work break, anywhere or time I could until I finished! The main characters were very well developed and I adored and sympathized with each of them in different ways. I was hooked by this story on both timelines- enjoying reading of Lori, Joel and Clancy and then going forward to Garrison and Molly. Their stories spanned between the 1930’s, 1940’s and 1991. Each jump was a smooth transition between the timeframes that wove together this addicting mystery. I never once got lost. It worked so well for this book! The story had so many twists and turns. I loved that just when I thought for sure I had the ending cracked, another curve ball was tossed in and proved my theories to be wrong. By the end of the book, I was completely satisfied. I didn’t feel like the author left any loose ends. I highly recommend if you like the mystery genre. I’ll be looking forward to more from Shanessa Gluhm!

As a fan of historical fiction and thrillers, this book did not disappoint. The cover is beautiful to start. I am a teacher so I like to support other teachers. I was hooked quickly by the vivid language the author uses. The story is told using an alternate timeline floating between modern times and WWII era, which doesn’t bother me as a reader. I thought the characters were interesting and felt the author did a great job capturing both settings and the relationship between the characters. I found myself not wanting to put it down. Mystery books often are easy to figure out the twists, but this one kept me guessing much longer than usual. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

Thirteen years after Joel Fitchett wanders into a diner in East Texas carrying his younger brother Clancy, both badly beaten, they both suffer from the aftershocks. They have made a promise to each other to hide the truth of what went on. Later, in 1991 Garrison Stark finds his way to Texas, chasing a rumor that Clancy is his biological grandfather. He is looking for a family but stumbles into a web of 60 years of lies that involve both Joel and Clancy along with a woman named Lorraine whom they both loved. The author masterfully weaves a story with alternating timelines that manage to hook you in from the first page. The characters are all complex and wonderfully written. The plot is intriguing. There are a lot of twists and turns and the story has you in tears. You cannot help but feel for these characters. This is a very well-written, page-turner of a story.

Enemies of Doves is set in changing timelines between WWII and 1992 and includes some very heavy topics and trigger warnings for PTSD, child abuse, and addiction. The story follows a few different people. Tom Fitchett is a dentist in a small town in 1941 with two sons. He is also an awful father, and expects perfection from them. He is often verbally and physically abusive, and this leaves for a tough life for the boys. His sons, Joel and Clancy, only two years apart, learn to look out for each other, while both try to figure out their paths. Garrison stark, in 1991, loses his parents and goes his own journey for answers, with the help of his grandmother and her dementia. Then you have Lorraine, who both of the aforementioned brothers, are in love with. She also loves both of them. How or where will the love triangle go? Will Garrison get his answers? How are the two timelines relevant to each other? All of this and so much more is answered. The ending was both unexpected and heartbreaking, and worth every minute it took to get there. Definitely deserving of 5 stars.

Joel Fitchett is found badly beaten and carrying his brother, Clancy in 1932. The theory is that the police know who did it, but with neither boys talking there is a mystery that surrounds what happened that fateful day.

This story vacillates from 1991 back to the 40’s with a college student Garrison Stark trying to uncover the history of Joel Fitchett as well as finding out if Clancy is his grandfather. Clancy disappeared in 1946, will Garrison figure out what really happened and if Clancy is who he thinks he is.

This pulled me right in, I thought the pacing of the story was well done. I definitely was intrigued by what happened to Joel and as you delve into the story and see how it all unfolds. New to me author and I will definitely like to see future books from her.

4 out of 5 stars

Told in alternating timelines from World War II to 1992, Enemies of Doves is a tale of family secrets, jealousy and deception.

It wasn’t how we were born or raised that made us the men we are today. It was what happened that day that set the rest of our lives in motion

****

Shanessa Gluhm delivers a powerhouse of a novel! Spanning over the course of 60 years and divided into two timelines you follow the story of two brothers, Clancy and Joel, harboring a deep secret. One that changes the course of their lives forever.

This book is packed with action, family drama, and lots of unexpected twists. With fleshed out characters and a plot line that will leave you flipping pages (and ignoring life until it’s done) this book easily gets 4/5 stars from me.

It was a quick paced read and the way the characters were developed made the story that much more interesting to read. I really enjoyed the many twists and the alternate timelines it added such depth to the story and kept me interested in knowing what happens.

If you’re a fan of historical fiction, thrillers and drama this will be your kind of book. I highly recommend giving this author a try!

‘Enemies of Doves’ is one of the best debut mystery/suspense that I have read. You can feel the power coming off of it. Told between two timelines, the plot so perfectly intertwines itself that the twists and turns just flow with it. This is an emotional story that will take your breath away. The story of two brothers and the girl they loved as told by the possible grandson of one of the brothers many years later. I was glued right from the start. The story is so well-developed that the author just naturally engages you with the characters. Joel and Clancy grab you from the start. You can’t put the book down because, like Garrison and Molly, you have to know what happened. This is a book so well-written that I hope there will be more from this author. I will be eagerly awaiting more. I am a new fan of hers. If you love suspense and mystery, you should read this one.

What an incredibly well written novel! I was tangled in the mystery this story held. I couldn’t have put this book down even if I wanted to. This book flowed easily and held the perfect amount of twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat until the end! I got completely and utterly lost to this book and I couldn’t have asked for anything more from it! Family secrets, deception, envy, and jealousy all wrapped into a young mans search for a place to belong and a family seemingly lost in the wind. I couldn’t recommend enough!!

The anticipation the author leaves is similar to chasing a high. You read each page as if it will hold the answer you are searching for. The author had my attention from the first sentence to the last. It was difficult getting anything done because I wanted to know what happened to the Fitchett brothers. The only way I was going to get my answer was if I kept reading.

The characters are brought to life in such a way that you almost feel like you are reading a nonfiction book. I do not think I can describe the Fitchett brothers as anything other than relatable without giving anything away. Then you have Garrison and Molly who you are rooting for the entire time. And of course you cannot forget Lorraine, who is loveable but frustrating. You also have characters who play a smaller role in the novel, but the author writes about them giving them as much personality as the main characters. This book is truly a work of art. If you enjoy a good mystery novel, this is the perfect one for you. It will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time.

This is one mystery book that sucked me in and did not disappoint in the story line. Clancy and Joel experiencing something traumatic as kids that followed them into adult hood. Then mixing in the war and some bad PTSD on top of their love for Lorraine.

Garrison wanting to find his family and Molly wanting to solve a crime uncovered the truth that had been hidden all these years. Also led Garrison into finding his family and Molly uncovering a hidden truth about her own.

This book was so hard to put down and not finish in one sitting. The way the story goes from past to present and linking it all up in the final few chapters.

This has to be one of the best mystery books I personally have read in awhile. One that added a few twists and then bam shocker!

Enemies of Doves by Shanessa Gluhm – Review by Maryn Belling

Wow. From page 1, Enemies of Doves drew me in and didn’t let go. With a smooth narrative style on par with Wally Lamb, Joyce Carol Oats, John Grisham, or Dorothea Benton Frank, I look forward to anything else Ms Gluhm writes, because Enemies of Doves is the BEST book I’ve read this year.

If – like me – you had higher hopes for Where the Crawdads Sing, Lincoln Highway, Mexican Gothic, Hummingbird Salamander, The Good Left Undone, or This Tender Land – Enemies of Doves is the answer to those hopes.

The way the storyline alternates between World War II era life and the early 1990s, readers who were in junior high, high school, or college in the 1990s will find extra connections with their contemporaries.

Resonant “notable quotables” really make the book a keeper for me –

Here’s a lesson they won’t teach you at that fancy college of yours. Life ain’t a fair boss. It don’t always hand you the paycheck you earned.

She said Wyoming with the reverence people usually reserved for discussing heaven or the New York Yankees.

You were missing from my porch swing, from my passenger seat, from the pew beside me at church. And it was no wonder my life had always felt so empty.

Any other quotes I share would spoil the story. It’s been a LONG time since I’ve read a book this wonderful. Thank you Ms. Gluhm for sharing your book with the world.

In Enemies of Doves, the Fitchett brothers, Joel and Clancy, have a past full of mystery and secrets. Secrets that did not come to light until Garrison got involved. Garrison’s grandmother told him that Clancy Fitchett may be his grandfather. The story follows Garrison on his journey to find the truth about his grandfather, while flashing back to when Joel and Clancy were younger. Full of twists and turns, Enemies of Doves will keep you on your toes.
Enemies of Doves is full of realistic and connectable characters. From war veteran Clancy to his older brother Joel who would do anything for his little brother, to the woman they both loved, to curious and determined Garrison, plus many others, it is hard to not find a character you connect to. There was not a single part of Enemies of Doves that I did not absolutely love. I enjoyed all the characters, their plights, and all the twists and turns Shanessa Gluhm had to offer. If you are looking for a gripping story full of suspense, romance, and mystery, look no further.

This story had its own sense of a mystery as well as suspense. I really enjoyed this one. I was guessing all the way through as I read. The writing was gripping and had a strong sense of realism. I was impacted with realism as I read. This was a book that was impossible to be put down for any means.

The book really made me feel a lot of things. The questions I had just seemed to lead to more answers. I was constantly wondering where this book would lead to next. The story was gripping and from reading of the present and the past with the stories, I was very much intrigued and constantly on the edge of my seat, for the truth was at times far from reach, but a lot closer than I had thought! The book was a sensational read, and I could not put it down! Loved it! Truly a masterpiece of expert writing!

So amazing! I really enjoyed this book and all it had brought to the table. I highly recommend this must-read book. It is a book that was dear as well something we all should read! Do not miss out!

This is a great suspenseful mystery, with plenty of twists that keep you guessing, the author had me gripped from page one. In 1932, Joel Fitchett wanders into a diner in East Texas, Joel is 12 years old and has obviously been badly beaten, he is also carrying his brother Clancy, who is unconscious. Thirteen years later the two brothers are plagued with horrific memories of that night and Joel has been left physically scared on his face but the two still deny to police that they remember anything having made a pact together to hide the truth. Joel and Clancy then find themselves at the centre of a murder investigation and enter into a second pact, with another lie hoping this will give them a second chance.
The story is told in alternating timelines from World War II to 1992. The storyline continues in, 1991 and Garrison Stark, a college student travels to Texas to find Clancy Fitchett who has been missing since 1946 and who he believes maybe his biological grandfather. What Garrison uncovers is a tangle of secrets spanning over sixty years involving brothers Clancy and Joel and Lorraine, the woman they both appear to have loved.
This novel had me hooked from page one and I devoured it as I literally could not put this book down, a sign of a great read. It has a fast paced storyline which flows well and the narrative is well written, I liked how the story was told in two different timelines. The story is all about family secrets, jealousy and deception and I found it a five star read.

Whoa! So I finished this book yesterday, and i still cant think of the right words to thoroughly express how amazing this story is. Its no surprise that I just am not a big fan of timeline swaps but after a bit I was ok with it as for this story you absolutely need it.
Ok so how do you put into words a review for this, because I want to say it all but then it may ruin it for someone else as they’d feel I told the story here. And I don’t want to be vague and just say “go pick up this book” but for real go get this book, lock yourself away for a day and read it! The characters, the stories, and the feelings! I haven’t been this invested then wrong in a book as many times as i was in this. Twists, turns, secrets and discovery. Its all here. Amazing and I’ll be on the lookout for more from this author!

This book had me excited from the moment I read the synopsis. I knew it was going to be a good read and I wasn’t let down. I’ve never read a book by Shanessa Gluhm, and I’m so glad I gave this one a go. It was well worded, great plots and even more amazing characters. IF I could give this more than 5 stars I would hands down. In this tale we meet Joel, Clancey, Lorraine, Garrison and Molly. There are other important characters you’ll meet, but these are basically our mains. Part of the effect this book had on me was because it’s set in two different time frames. Joel, Clancey and Lorraine are whose lives we are in when the time setting is 1940’s. Then we jump to the 1990’s with Garrison and Molly. This book has it all- Love, loss, bad guys, plots to keep you interested and so much in between.

At first I wasn’t sure I’d like this book but it didn’t take long before I was engrossed in the story. Families can can have secrets that entangle them for life.

As Garrison Stark starts researching where his grandfather came from and what happened, he meets his grandfather’s brother Joel. Joel is in jail for murder and Garrison has a feeling Joel is hiding something important.

The back and forth between 1932 and 1991 can be tricky but Ms Gluhm does a wonderful job of it. I would recommend this book to friends!

This is an amazing story full of twists and turns that keeps you guessing and I unable to put the book down.

This story follows two lifes. One of two brothers Joel and Clancy. The other follows Garrison who believes he is the grandson of Clancy.

Garrison is on the hunt to find Clancy to find out of he is really his grandad however things arent straight forward as Clancy has disappeared from the face of the earth. So he starts going back trying to trace Clancy. He starts by learning about Joel who is currently in prison for murder. But did he do it?

Clancy and Joel have always been close and Joel has always been there to get Clancy out of bother. When something happens that leaves Joel scarred for life neither boy talks to explain what has happened. What are they hiding or covering up.

Fast forward and their dad is found murdered. Joel is arrested and charged and Clancy vanishes. Are the brothers still keeping secrets? Is Joel still looking out for Clancy? Is Joel the one who murdered there dad?

Its a rollercoaster journey from the first page. I loved it.
