I love supernatural books and this is the first one from this author I have read and man I was not let down. I like how the author brings the characters to life. The chemistry really is flowing between the characters. I like how there is a big mix of drama and intrigue mixed in with action. The author does a good job of creating the world and drawing in the reader into it. I felt as though I was right there in the midst of the adventure as it ensued. I really cannot wait to read more from this author in the future.
What a good good story! I enjoyed the world and the characters this author created. I liked meeting Ava and her friends. The author did a good job of getting me to worry and wonder about each of them. Are they good or bad? What are their secretive powers? Will they all be able to survive?
I loved all the activity and action. It easily kept me interested and reading. My biggest and really only issue is the Spanish speaking without translation throughout the book. It frustrated me since I didn’t understand what was being said. So I usually just ended ip skipping them.

Ava Ramos is a strong female paranormal detective/mage. In the heart of New York, right where all the paranormal activities take place. Such a great read, I loved all the characters and action.
Unearthly Magik is the first book in the Black Cauldron Detective Agency series by Matilda Reyes. It is a superb urban fantasy full of mages, action, adventure, drama, magic, the supernatural/paranormal, suspense, danger, agendas, wonderful world-building, crime & investigation, tension, secrets, and mystery. I really loved the premise of the story, and having read a few of Ms. Reyes other books, I couldn’t wait to dive into this one. I loved the characters, the whole supernatural detective agency trope, the missing (powerful and dangerous) grimoire, the plots and agendas, the wonderful world-building of the hidden ‘world’ within New York City, the friendships/banter/quips/antics, the adventure that results from the search for the grimoire, the other ‘jobs’ the agency investigates, and the fact that there is more to come in this series- as I am definitely hooked by Ava and co. Whilst I did enjoy the story, there were quite a few editing issues with this book that I am sorry to say definitely detracted from my overall appreciation of the whole story. Little things, like missing words, wrong words, unfinished sentences, and repeated info, meant that I was regularly ‘pulled out’ of the story- which left me frustrated. This should/could have been a 5+ Star read, but unfortunately it was let down by simple editing issues. The story does have a lot going on in it, and has a fairly fast pace, which the author does choreograph quite well. The story easily captured my attention and imagination, and pulled me into a wonderful adventure (minus the editing issues). I also appreciated that the characters were really well-developed individuals with their own unique personalities, quirks, and flaws- who continued to evolve, develop and grow over the course of the story. I am looking forward to seeing where we go from here. Bring on Book #2! Happy Reading!

After eagerly awaiting this novel to hit my Kindle I simply devoured it when it finally arrived. I am a huge sucker for paranormal/fantasy books filled with passion and suspense and this book really delivered. Full of great characters, an original and terrific plot I just simply couldn’t put it down. Filled with magic, secrets, mages and more trust me when I say that you want to run and pick this one up today. This was a new author for me but trust me when I say I’ll be looking for more from her.
Ava Ramos is a gray mage who owns her own agency called the black cauldron. Being a gray mage means that you are in a gray zone for morals which makes certain jobs hers for the taking. Ava isn’t scared to get her hands dirty and because of this, she is well known in the supernatural world.
Everything seems to be going good when Ava realizes that she is being followed by someone she does not recognize. Ava’s old boss whom she hates with a passion, Tasis, shows up with a job that she cannot refuse. A grimoire which holds a lot of dark secrets is in circulation. In the wrong hands it could be detrimental to a lot of races if not all. Tasis wants to employ Ava to retrieve it for him. He offers one of his own guys to help out, a mage by the name of Max.
Instantly there is tension between the two mages. This was the same guy that Ava caught a few times following her so instantly she did not trust him. As time goes on there is some will they/won’t they vibes between the two. Lack of trust made things go less smoothly than Ava had hoped. They will have to put their differences aside if they want to get out of this case unscathed.
This book sucked me in right from the beginning. It’s filled with magic, mystery, action with a huge plot twist to top it off. The characters are relatable making it easier for me to envision myself in their world. Ava is sassy, stubborn, mean and a little bit crazy. Max is charismatic and knows it. He uses his looks and flirtation to get what he wants and most of the time it works in his favor. The two seem like an unlikely pair but the partnership throughout this case really works well for them.
The only downfall was the fact that there was some Spanish in the book which I do not speak so I was not fully aware of some of the banter between the characters.
This is a really strong start to a new series and it was such an easy book to get into. I loved the main character. She comes across as so strong and feisty. She was really interesting to read about and I thought she was so engaging. This is still a relatively new author to me but I am starting to get a feel for her writing style. Her books always come across as well developed and I find them to be exciting and fast paced. As the first book in a new series I think this one does a great job of whetting your appetite for what is to come. I am looking forward to seeing what that might be.
I do love my paranormal books with a passion but this one really held its own. I was swept away with the story and the characters that it held. It was full of intrigue and moments you did not want to let go of.
I loved that this book focused on a supernatural detective agency. To me that was a golden find as I knew I was in for a treat learning that and the characters that info surrounded. Ava was a woman after my own heart. She had the personality that you do not see much in characters in paranormal books. She was strong minded as well. The book went at a fast pace and everything made sense, and there were no confusing moments. You read what you got. The book was magically amazing Impossible not to love!
I loved this book for all it held and contained. I can’t wait to read more! The book was great all the way through. I highly recommend this must read book! I highly say, do not pass this one up!
I really enjoyed reading the paranormal story. There is so many twists and secrets that need to be uncovered that it keeps the readers guess. I loved the fact that the action starts right from the first page so the reader is instantly gripped.
Ava is a Maga who runs a detective agency. There is nothing or no one that Ava cannot find and her business is her life. Ava and her partners take all sorts or jobs. When an old rival of Ava comes to her with a case she wants to turn her back. But she owns them a favour so agrees to take the case. The Lauret Grimoire has gone missing from the most closely guarded library. With what it contains if it falls into the wrong hands it could spell really bad trouble. So Ava accepts this impossible case, to find The Lauret Grimoire and return it before it falls into the hands of the wrong people. What follows is a captivating story as Ava unravels the clues to find this missing item. What will she uncover along the way? And can her old rival Tasis be trusted or is there something he is hiding?
Ava Ramos is a woman with a larger than life reputation, she is a mage and the owner of the Black Cauldron Detective Agency and being based in New York at the heart of the supernatural community, she isn’t lacking in work. She has been out on her own for a while now and finding missing objects, or uncovering secrets are what Ava and her team do best and between them, they pretty much knows the city like the back of heir hands, or at least Ava thought she did, until Tasis, her old boss comes calling with a case.
The Lauret Grimoire has been stolen and he needs Ava and her team to find it, it is one of the oldest and most dangerous books out there, so time is against them from the beginning, it has been stolen from one of the most secure libraries for mystical documents and Tasis himself is one of the guards and no clues to the identity of the thief have been found. Ava is reluctant at first, but when Tasis calls it as the last favour she owes him, then she reluctantly agrees, but the case is more complicated than they expected and they keep running into dead ends
Will Ava and her team be able to find the Lauret Grimoire in time, or will it disappear and cause more problems than any of them can imagine? This is an urban fantasy with risks at every turn as the race against time and dangerous opponents in the supernatural community beneath a city filled with non magical people who could easily become caught in the crossfire.
This was such a great read! I haven’t read a supernatural book in quite some time and I’m so glad I chose this one. It was fast paced and kept me turning pages quickly to find out what would happen. I loved the story line and the characters and really just everything. Ava is just absolutely amazing and I instantly liked her determined sassy self. I highly recommend reading this book if you’re looking for your next paranormal read.
I am a big fan of paranormal books and this one just joined my favorites list. I found the plot to be my favorite part of it. A Mage detective agency in the inner city among the ordinaries (is that like muggles?) . The story was action packed and pulled me in from the start. I found myself fascinated with her magic and the vines/thorns. The whole rival storyline was mysterious and part of why I had to keep reading. What was going to happen? This is a pretty cool book for paranormal fans. I hope to read more from this author.
I enjoy paranormal stories especially when they have a kickass heroine,so this novel hits the mark. The story of Ava and her group of friends was exciting to read. This story had mystery and drama as we get to watch Ava kick some butt and take names. It included some surprises and some lighthearted moments making it just right. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
Unearthly Magik (Black Cauldron Detective Agency Book 1) by Matilda Reyes. This was such a fun read. Its a fast paced, paranormal, supernatural story filled with magic, underground that is supernatural, secrets and mages. Ava is a Mage who runs the Black Cauldron Detective Agency and she knows all the goings on in New York. If you need secrets uncovered, objects found or just plain Mage gossip Ava is the one to call. When Tasis her formal rival shows up asking her to help find the Laurent Grimoire she may have bit off more than she can chew. She is full of worry if she can really trust Tasis or not. Unearthly Magik is engaging from the very start. It is a paranormal supernatural tale full of action, suspense, adventure and drama. The storyline is original and intriguing and will have you wanting more.
There is mystery around every corner, lies and secrets to uncover, a supernatural underground, magik, grimoires, Mages, a supernatural Detective Agency and impossible cases to be solved.
Ava is strong willed, sassy, quick to temper and she is extremely unpredictable. I fell in love with her.
Ava and her Mages from the Black Cauldron Detective Agency have been tasked to find The Lauret Grimoire when former rival, Tasis shows up. Can he be trusted? What will they discover on this journey?
I enjoyed this book and I can’t wait for the next one and I know you will too.
Ava Ramos is one furious mage. New York City is her town, and she and her Black Cauldron Detective Agency know every beat of the supernatural underground. Need an object found or secrets uncovered? Ava and her partners are the mages to contact. A former rival, Tasis, shows up with a case that proves Ava just might not know everything about her town.
The Lauret Grimoire, the oldest known compendium of the supernatural, has gone missing from one of the most closely guarded magikal libraries in the city. The mages assigned to guard the damned thing can’t find any clues. Tasis is one of those mages.
Now, Tasis is calling in the last favor Ava owes him. Ava never breaks her word, so she and the Black Cauldron Detective Agency take the impossible case.
Can they find The Lauret Grimoire before anyone in the supernatural underground gets their hands on it? Or will a supernatural war start in Ava’s backyard?

This if the first book of this series and it’s amazing! It’s a story of a demon hunter name Rovena. It’s slow at the start then it picks up. I can’t get enough! It’s riveting, action packed. The descriptions are stunning. Seriously go read this right now!!

Demon hunter and a twist This was a brilliant read – I totally enjoyed every moment. Rovena is a a kick-ass demon hunter and the battles (both physical and emotional) were delivered well. With mystery, suspense, witty banter and of course demon hunting there is so much to love about this book and so much more left to explore for the rest of the series. I can’t wait.

The story was exceptional and nothing like I expected! This author took me on such a wild ride, and every portion of this book was amazing. Our female main character was completely bad a**. Demons, danger, violence, supernatural, the occult, and so much action all in one sitting. This book was one I would read more than once, and more than twice. Watching Rovena and the depth she goes to to keep this one demon corpse alive when normally her job is to make sure they stay dead was such a fun ride. Book one was amazing and book 2 cannot get here soon enough

This was a well written first book and a new author to me. The synopsis is what initially got my attention and I was intrigued enough to want to read this story. It started off with action and I wondered what kind of demon hunter I was reading about. Of course being a fan of the long running TV show Supernatrual I had a few ideas in mind about how she would vanquish these beings, but it was nothing like that. The simple yet effective method the author put forth made me do a double take, haha. Normally Rovens’s duty is to kill a demon, but when she is sent to find out why a Marked was killed and who did it she accidentally brings the body back to life with a new soul. She doesn’t know exactly how it happened as she doesn’t quite know the full extent of her powers or why they only work sometimes. Instead of hunting demons and offing them she is now tasked with keeping one alive. Will she be able to gain the trust of her sworn enemy? Or will the enemy turn out to be her downfall?

Rovena is a demon hunter, she’s strong and tough and just completely awesome. With her special skills, she’s the best there is at what she does. But, instead of killing demons can she keep one alive. Excellent read! I can’t wait for the rest of the series.

This book has an interesting premise of hunters and demons. Some hunters have special abilities and Rovena is one of those hunters. She has the ability to touch someone and see their memories. This comes in handy and is used by the members of the monastery to gain information on the death of humans or demons. Rovena is on a case to determine why an innocent human was targeted by demons. Lakyn has his own issues. He ends up on the surface in possession of the body Rovena is cased with. Here upon starts the tale Rovena and Lakyn. Enemies with no trust in each other.

This book is not something I would typically read, but I am so glad I did. The wording is impeccable and the way the story unfolds is intriguing. It really draws you in and you just want to find out what happens next. Rovena is a strong, mighty, and solid hunter. She is definitely a force to be reckoned with. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!

I found this to have a really similar vibe to shows like Lucifer and Warrior Nun on Netflix. There aren’t a lot of written stories to include this genre, to the level of detail that Kristy gives us, which is just #LOVE. “Tale of a Body Thief” includes demon hunters, demons (obviously), monks, nuns, a monastery, a heap of investigation intrigue, and so much more you will just have to read to find out.
Rovena is the badass, gothic demon slayer we all wish we could be. She’s already a pretty competent individual in her trade, equipped with some unique abilities to assist her mission. Not only is she capable, witty, and a total force to be reckoned with, the author brings her to life as a real down to earth person.
Along side her trying to save humanity, are her fellow hunters. But can she trust them totally? In the midst of some pretty epic (and graphic) battle scenes, Rovena is forced to use quick and critical thinking. There is so much diversity across the board for all characters. We want good vs. evil to be drawn with a clear black and white line, but that’s not how life works for us, or for Rovena.
We as the readers are guaranteed a journey with this heroine to some pretty unexpected outcomes, a lesson in self discovery, and you might just find yourself questioning your own reality. I just love that Kristy leaves room in the world development to lure you into the next book. You really have to think for yourself, and ask yourself “is anyone safe?”. Easy to read and understand the picture that Kristy paints for the reader.

I enjoyed this paranormal story. I enjoyed how the author was able to use her writing skills to bring the story to life. The author’s attention to details made the story realistic which added to the story. This is a well written story about Rovena. She is used to hunting and killing demons but now she needs to keep one alive which totally changes the game for her. She is such a strong, supportive character that she made the story easy to read. I enjoyed how the author pulled me into the story from the beginning. This is a fast paced story that is hard to put down. An engaging story that you don’t want to miss. I really enjoyed reading this story and I highly recommend it.

Rovena has the coolest job in the world! She hunts demons! She also has special abilities that some of the other Hunters don’t, which gives her an advantage. Her job gets turned upside down when she is tasked with watching over a body that was originally in the morgue. Never before has she seen such an occurrence. Turns out the body is no longer inhabited by the original soul and now houses a demon. Rovena must keep him alive until they know what is going on. More demons are coming to Earth than ever before, something isn’t right in the underworld. Can she do this job correctly or will all Hell break lose, literally? This was such a fun read! This book kept me entertained and wanting to find out what happened next.

What a start to a new series! This book grabs your attention right from the word go and really doesn’t let up at all. I loved everything about this book – the characters, the story, the writing style. The author has created a book that really stays with you even after you have finished reading. The book is entertaining as well, in a way I don’t often find books like this to be. Honestly, it ticked all the boxes for me and if this is just the start I can’t wait to see what is to come next.

Tale of a Body Thief is the fantastic first instalment in the Rovena Silvex Chronicles by Kristy Centeno. I have loved everything I have read by this author, so I was definitely excited to get my hands this, her latest offering. I had really high expectations going into this story, as her previous books have been amazing- and I couldn’t help but wonder if it was possible for her to hit another home run with this new story/series. I needn’t have worried though, and never should have doubted her- as this book is every bit as good as her previous works- if not better. This is a wonderfully original and exciting fantasy with intriguing paranormal elements, plenty of action, danger, the occult, hunters, demons, witches, thrills, excitement, edge of your seat suspense, mystery, dramatic developments, violence, the supernatural, good vs evil, agendas, and adventure. There is so much packed in-between the covers of this book- making for such an exciting read. I was completely hooked right from the word go- and didn’t come up for air till I had read every last word. Ms. Centeno has written such an engrossing, detailed, and wonderfully dynamic story- that I was completely caught up in all the developments. She had me avidly reading the whole way through, sometimes on the edge of my seat waiting to see how things would play out. The story is very original, imaginative, and well-woven. And was everything I could have hoped for (and more) from this talented author. The characters were superbly crafted into fully developed individuals with their own unique personalities, quirks and flaws. They really brought the whole story to life and added so much more depth and ‘flavour’ to the whole adventure. I love Rovena- she is such a feisty, strong, kick-a( ) character. But this demon hunter also has a few surprises up her sleeve, too. The story is set to continue in future instalments- so I can’t wait for the next book to see where we go from here! If you love fantasy, the paranormal/supernatural, demons, witches, good vs evil, sinister agendas, intriguing characters, and spell-binding storylines- then you will definitely want to snap up a copy of this book, asap. Happy Reading!

This book is a complete surprise in a good way. There’s so many twist and turn in it and you completely fall in love with the characters. It makes you feel like anyone might be able to be redeemed. I can’t wait to read the next book and continue on the journey with Rovena.

I’ve read several books that include demon hunters and this book didn’t disappoint. I would categorize myself as a sci-fi, fantasy, and paranormal genre lover at times although I enjoy reading pretty much anything fiction. I especially like reading books with strong female characters like Rovena. I easily got interested in Rovena and what makes her special. As I continued to read I became more and more invested in Rovena, the world she lives and works in. The author did a wonderful job with character descriptions, the world they strive to survive in, and building up the story to make the reader want to continue reading more. I think many reader will enjoy reading this book.
