My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Grave Digger Academy IV is the most recent Grave Digger Academy series release. This book picks up shortly where the third book left off. For the most enjoyment, take my advice and read the earlier books before getting into this one. Makayla has returned to school, and there have been a lot of changes. There is a new headmistress introducing a new curriculum, her allies are gone, and she is the most disliked of students. Does Makayla have what it takes to figure out all of the underlying happenings at the school and in her world? The story is quickly paced to keep you on your toes. I have enjoyed learning more about the world of the grave diggers as Makayla has learned. I look forward to the next book in the series to see what happens next.

Makayla is having an argument with her dad about going back to school. He is forbidding her going. Her actions in the past few years are showing the stress on her parents. A letter shows up and the argument is over as she has been ordered to return to school.

She is excited because she is hoping to finally see her friends. Life is not fair as she is now the one and only disliked pupil hated by all. She doesn’t know what is going on. Why is everyone staring at her? She will need to get to the bottom of what is going on.

This is where her adventure begins. Who to trust is going to be a huge struggle. Friends may not be trustworthy but enemies may be.

This was another great addition to the Grave Digger Series.

Note: This is not a standalone book. In order to understand what’s going on, you need to read the previous books in the series.

After things slowed down a little in book three, this book picks up the pace again. A lot of changes have happened and Makayla is embroiled in mystery. She’s cut off from much of her support system and doesn’t know who to trust. This story will have you leaning into the twists and turns as Makayla learns more about herself and the academy.

Phenomenal world building, superb characters. Fabulous read!

This is the third book in the Grave Digger Academy series. I have read all three so far and recommend reading them in order. It doesn’t give enough back story for you to fully understand what is going on if you don’t.

Makayla and her brothers expect the academy to be full to the brim with new students this year! Only when they get there, it’s anything but full. Something major has changed over the summer. Her brothers are forced to leave, but she must stay. She learns a lot about herself this year and a new insight into what’s really going on. Will it be too much for her?

New book, new year. Makayla is back for her third year at the Grave Digger Academy and it is worse than ever. Attendance is down, professors and students are scared and transferred out but Makayla is forced to stay. The crones do not trust her and want to keep her under their thumb. The school is in lockdown with a whole new set of rules, no one is to leave the premises. Not only that, but the crones think Makayla is too inexperienced to harness her legendary helpers and is forced to find a more ‘normal’ one.

This book is a lot slower paced than the previous two in the series. It was kind of like a montage of Makayla learning more about her potential and working on herself to get stronger. I liked how the author actually wrote about the struggle and the work Makayla put in. A lot of times, the main character is just all of a sudden super powerful and at full potential which makes for an unrealistic arc. I really enjoy this author’s writing. I am excited for the next installment of the series!

I feel this is a better story than the last couple. It was a little sporadic in the beginning but once it got rolling it was wonderful! I was completely glued to the story and trying to figure out what is going to happen. The secondary characters are starting to fill out and become full of life. Plus we are seeing more out of Makayla. Who can she trust and who is part of the problem? I was unhappy with the way the story stopped but it leaves me wanting more!

Encounters With Old Coyote by Laura Koerber – Review by Tara Johnson Barnes

Encounters with Old CoyoteEncounters with Old Coyote by Laura Koerber
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Encounters With Old Coyote is a collection of thirteen short stories featuring Old Coyote that was first introduced in previous books written by this talented author. It has emotion, loss, grief, hope, paranormal elements, magical realism, shapeshifters, and spirits. The story centers around the character of Andrea who found out she had cancer, so she decided to end her life on her own terms and in a location of her choosing. To her surprise, she discovers that she is caught in the afterlife as a spirit and finds herself questioning all she has ever known. As an atheist, Andrea never believed in the existence of God but now she is full of questions about whether God actually exists. She runs into Old Coyote who is in his spirit form and the two begin to talk. She asks him questions about life and death and the existence of God. Old Coyote and Andrea wander and share stories and memories from their past. The scenes were vivid, beautifully written, and pull you into the story. The character of Andrea is one that I felt instantly drawn to and empathized with. This was a poignant and thought provoking read.

This book was not one that I enjoyed. However, please do not go off my review alone as there are many who appreciated this much more than I did.

In this story, Andrea is suffering with cancer and she decides that she is going to take fate into her own hands and die on her terms. She soon learns that she’s only “half-dead” though and, in her ghost form, meets a coyote who embodies antlers like a deer and can make and drink coffee. Together, they share several stories about life and death in general.

I had a hard time staying interested in this story and I’m not really sure why. I enjoy supernatural reads so it wasn’t that aspect of it. However, I can’t really put my finger on it.

Give this one a chance if you enjoy quirky supernatural reads!

Grave Digger Academy IV is part of the Grave Digger fantasy series. It’s aimed at teen and YA readers but will appeal to all who enjoy magic school stories. This book is best enjoyed as part of the series so that you watch the characters grow and develop and see how the story leads on from the previous book.

I love that this story gets us going with some mysteries straight away. Who is Jezabella Peacock and what does she have to do with Makayla? How has the school changed, and what impact will that have on her? There are plenty of twists, it’s a real page-turner! I’m looking forward to reading the fifth book when it comes out.

This book gets five stars from me! I’ve enjoyed other series by this author as well so knew I was in for a treat when I started the Grave Digger Academy series! It’s great for existing fans of the author, as well as being a great entry point.

Encounters with Old CoyoteEncounters with Old Coyote by Laura Koerber
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“Encounters With Old Coyote” by Laura Koerber is a delightful rollercoaster of 13 short stories that blend real-life moments with a dash of magic. Picture the ghost of a cool professor named Andrea chilling with a spirit named Coyote in the Nevada desert. They share tales ranging from stunning landscapes to childhood escapades and even telepathic cows. Andrea’s love for nature and animals is evident, and Coyote, not big on spirituality, adds a humorous touch. The book might be small, but it’s packed with quirky and heartwarming moments that linger in your thoughts. Koerber serves up a unique mix of the unusual and the touching that’s simply unforgettable.

This is a short novella with 13 chapters and 68 pages of interesting adventures. The book explores the nature of life, death, and the connection between all living beings. I appreciate the author’s note that she is not Native, nor an expert on Native American culture. Coyote helps Andrea come to terms of coming to the afterlife. I think it adds a great element to the stories. This was a good read.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Andrea was a skeptic about many things in her life – and now, after making her decision of dying underneath the beauty of the Nevada desert sky, she finds herself unsure of how she even ended up back here after her physical body died. Here, among other things, she is surprised to find herself in the company of Old Coyote – a supernatural being with a coyote face and antlers. And he also brought coffee!

Since Andrea never believed in anything like the afterlife, she takes the opportunity to ask the big questions we ponder, like is there a god. Coyote doesn’t answer her outright, but as they begin to wander and tell stories of life, maybe she really IS able to discover the answers to some of her burning questions. The stories they share with one another tell much more than what they have to say – as they speak of life, love, bras at gas stations, environmental consciousness, “eyeball orgasms”, absolutely stunning visuals, Coyote gently leading Andrea to the answers she seeks, and more. All 13 stories weave an absolutely beautiful tale of the meaning of things. The end was intensely satisfying. I am totally entranced by this book.

This a really beautifully written story. The author’s writing is always beautiful, descriptive, spiritual and really draws in as a reader.

This book is made up for 13 stories that are told from the view points of the Old Coyote and Andrea’s spirit. Together they travel around sharing stories and discussing topics such as is there a God and what happens when we die.
Andrea’s stories are all about reliving memories and it was beautiful to see the things she remembered and how those memories had an impact on her life and now death.

This is a heartwarming story and I loved it. The author’s writing is beautiful and really stays with you even after the story is over

This is an interesting and though provoking story that explores the notion of death and the afterlife. Told in a unique and refreshing way, the story creates a journey that you can go along with the characters.
A collection of stories and tales, the book slowly pieces together Andreas life and the events that have shaped her. It was a great way to get to know her as a character and showed a real development as the book went on. This author always manages to produce different and intriguing stories that are unlike anything I have ever read. This book is no exception and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Grave Digger Academy IV (Grave Digger Academy Series) by C.A. King. This is the next fun installment in the Grave Digger Academy and it picks up the summer before school is about to start. The old headmistress has left and the new one is Ulva Everbleed. The building is half finished because the Crones shut down construction. The only way you can go back to school is if you received a letter. Makayla is excited to get a letter but when she sees her friends they ignore her. There are lots of changes this year, new headmistress, new teachers and new students. She doesn’t know who she can trust. Everything seems to be weird and unpredictable. Some people have disappeared and some are acting strange. Makayla is being watched at everything she does and she can’t have her helpers this year. This book is full of death, witches, paranormal, magic and mystery. Another great installment but I do recommend you read them in order.

This was a really intriguing and interesting read. I have read books by this author previously so thought I would give this one a go. The main character in the story, Andrea, is a ghost. It was actually a really thought provoking story and for Andrea it was about her looking back on her journey along with Coyote. The author really brings this characters story to life with her wonderful and engaging writing style. Her descriptive language was great as I was taken along with Andrea as she remembered her memories and brought them to life again.
A really interesting read and one I would recommend.

‘Life isn’t a moral vacuum and life is not meaningless.’ She peered down her nose at Andrea and added, ‘it’s okay if some
things are a mystery.’

Encounters with Old Coyote was a very well written short read that had far too many “oh, that’s good” quotes for me to count. We follow our main character after death, a plot that I can’t recall ever really reading in the past in this capacity anyway.
The characters are enjoyable with a lot of insight and depth. I loved listening to each story within the story, especially those like her brother vomiting, the casual “huh, why did I just say that” type of story.

If you’re looking for a short, unique and thought provoking read, Laura Koerber created it here.

Grave Digger Academy IV was my favorite of the series, so far. I literally did not put it down, reading it in one sitting. Makayla is back at Grave Digger Academy, but everything is different this year. There is a new headmistress, and a lot of the students didn’t return, or perhaps weren’t invited back, or maybe disappeared….everyone has a different theory. There is so much going on and the plot thickened a lot in this one. Relationships were built with others strengthened and some severed. It wasn’t quite as much of a cliff hanger ending, but left a lot open. I cannot wait for the next book. I need to know where this is heading and ends. Because the things that happened in this book, I did not expect.

This is the 3rd book in the Grave Digger Academy series. It is a must read for fans of paranormal fantasy fiction. I think out of the three books, this is the most creative and fans will appreciate it. There’s lots of adventure, fun and a touch of romance.

This series follows Makayla on her adventure within the academy after learning of her rare ability to see and communicate with the dead. The mysterious and secret school for people with her abilities turns out to be a great fit allowing her to learn more about her power plus uncover the mysterious realm called the afterlife.

This book presents Makayla and her friends with their biggest challenge to date. They are forced to fight a sinister plot to disrupt the balance between the living and the dead. There is a lot of growth throughout the series and especially in this challenging chapter.

I hope you enjoy stories that include humor, emotions, action, and suspense because this one is overflowing with it all!

I think everyone will be satisfied with the outcome of this story. It is so well written and has a good balance of characters, plot & incredible dialogue. I highly recommend.

I was very excited to continue the Grave Digger Academy series by C. A. King! The third installment did not disappoint. Many of the same characters return, but things are very different at the Academy with many students and faculty leaving. This book started out a little slower but I believe all of the information learned will be beneficial in the long run. We are introduced to more helpers and find out Makayla may be much more than she seems. The Crones have Makayla and the Academy in their sites and seem determined to bring both down. But, with many of her old friends missing this year, Makayla finds her own strengths and magic within her isolation. The same great world building is used and I’ve become so invested in the characters. I cannot wait for the fourth book!

This is the 3rd book in the Grave Digger Academy series. I really recommend reading these books in order so you get the complete picture and complete understanding for the character.
This author is one I am always excited to pick up as I am never disappointed and am always taken on a paranormal adventure that I’ll never forget.

Makayla is returning back to Grave Digger Academy for her 3rd year. But just like the previous years it isn’t going to be easy for Makayla. When she arrives at the academy with her brothers who change their schools to protect her she automatically knows something is wrong.
After all the hype around the Academy Makayla expected the school to be busy so why was it so quiet?
When she notices that some of her friends and teachers haven’t returned she knows she needs to find out what is going on. But can she succeed in getting to the truth without the aid of her helpers? And how dangerous will things become for her when she tries to uncover the truth.
With people questioning whether she is on the side of good or evil she is in a race against time to find the missing people while also keeping herself safe.
Will she be able to survive the 3rd year at Grave Digger Academy?

This is a YA paranormal adventure which is full of twists and turns. It is a fast paced story with great character development. I can’t wait to see what else the author had in store for us with this series.

The third book in the series and I have been waiting to find out what has happened with Makayla, and once again the author has not let us down.
The story continues to evolve and is a little grittier and darker than the previous 2 but the plot and characters continue to evolve.
The Academy itself has had a turn around and is now where everyone wants to go but there has been a hold on transfers, and all who wanted to transfer out were allocated placements at other academies. So on return Makayla finds things very different. Rules are sharper and even the head mistress is being held under strong views from the Crones.
Can Makayla work within the new tough rules and make her way towards her destiny.
Another amazingly written book.
