This book was a breath of fresh air. I remember reading the Nancy Drew mysteries growing up, and the shenanigans that Buccaneers get into remind me so much of those books. I think everyone needs a book like this in their library, whether they are young readers just starting out, or older readers who are looking for something to inspire nostalgia. If you are ready to get invested in a story with lovable characters, neat illustrations, and plenty of twists and turns, then crack open this adventurous tale!

This short YA novel is an entertaining read – a breath of fresh air in the midst of so many heavy dystopian ones. Most books written about 1940’s America seem to focus on the idyllic suburban life, but this is set on the small island of St. Frederick, off the coast of New York, as the world is still recovering from the ravages of WWII. The self-titled “Buccaneers” are a group of school-aged friends who fancy themselves being sleuths, especially as they investigate the theft of the fundraiser money intended for donation to homeless children in NYC. But it seems that there may be more going on than just stolen money, especially as increasingly frightening events occur while the child detectives continue to work their case.
The story and characters are a fun blending of Nancy Drew and the Boxcar Children. Everyone has their own unique talents and quirks, and the investigation is full of twists and red-herrings, but in the end all things work out in an easy, lighthearted way. Again, a refreshing change of pace among the heavier novels on the market lately.

The Buccaneers of St. Frederick Island by Linda Maria Frank is book aimed at the younger age group but in my opinion this can be enjoyed by anyone in any age group. This is a short story that once I started reading I couldn’t stop. This is about a group of eighth graders who raised money to buy stuff for a homeless shelter in NYC, but there money goes missing so they as a group set out to find who stole there money. Then there club house burns down. Find out what happens next in this must read. This was a new to me author but I definitely can’t wait to read more from her.

As soon as I started reading this, I was sent back to my own childhood of reading the famous five books and other Enid Blyton books, and straight into all the warmth and comfort of the nostalgia those books always conjure. I think this nostalgia is why I found myself loving this book so much, it had the easy simplicity and ridiculous fun that was always present in those novels and it was what I loved so much about them.
As always there is a mystery that needs to be solved; money that should have gone on toys for those less fortunate has grown legs and wandered off and Sprocket and Co are the only ones that have enough about them to solve the mystery and get the moolah back where it belongs. Obviously, things never remain as simple as all that, and the deeper they delve into the mystery, the more dangerous it becomes for them.
Honestly, this is a great book for young children to read, with adventure and intrigue and great characters that come alive on the page, with a whole heck of a lot of moxie (word felt appropriate here for some reason). I would also recommend it to anyone that loved the famous five as a child and wants to revisit those nights reading it under the cover with a torch unless of course, that was just me then in that case I am sorry to have bothered you.

The Buccaneers of St. Frederick Island by Linda Maria Frank is an adventure! A group of crime-stopping eighth graders want to get to the bottom of a mysterious occurrence at St. BeSillius’ Catholic School and will stop at nothing until the truth is revealed. Set in 1947, this story contains characters who are lively and colorful. When their friends are targeted, the Buccaneers, including the narrator Lily (code name Sprocket), become entangled with thieves who have stolen their hard-earned fundraising money. Any child will love to go along with the Buccaneers as they set things right and save the day. This book is a quick read and recommended for ages 9-18, but can be enjoyed at any age, and by anyone who appreciates a good pirate tale. I definitely recommend this book to readers.

The Buccaneers of St. Frederick Island by Linda Maria Frank is possibly best described as an American Secret Seven. Set in the late 1940s, it follows a group of young teenagers who enjoy solving mysteries and are relentless in their pursuit of the truth. It has everything you’d expect – code names, clever ways of conveying information and some pretty cool hiding places (there’s even a cave!).
There’s a lively cast of child characters, as well as supporting adults. Some of the adults are understanding of the children’s need to keep secrets and see a case through, whilst others try to stop them. I particularly liked Sibby, who lives in a shack near the Buccaneers’ original club house and looks out for them.
This is an engaging and enjoyable read. I would recommend it to children who enjoy solving mysteries and reading adventure books such as those by Enid Blyton and Arthur Ransome. For me, it’s a five-star read!

This book definitely took me back in time to my childhood, reminiscent of the Nancy Drew books I devoured one after the other as a young girl. The buccaneers of St Fredericks Island is about a young group of aspiring detectives who raise money for a group of children in NYC. The money is stolen and their clubhouse is burned down. These young, brave kiddos set out to solve these mysteries and find out if they are connected. Little do they know they will uncover a deeper threat to the people of the Island. The illustrations were a nice added touch to the story. I’d say the book is aimed at younger children in the 8-12 category or so but I found myself becoming invested in these characters and enjoying the story as it went on. The characters were fun and the tale intriguing. Overall this was a very pleasant, easy read. I look forward to letting my children enjoy this lovely mystery as well.

I have once again discovered a new author. I have to admit that although the book is short it is
full of drama and intrigue. I was very surprised at just how much was packed into this book. I don’t usually go for this genre but I thought I would take a chance and was not disappointed.

The author does a great job of bringing the characters to life and the adventure that pursues really grabs the reader and holds you till the end. I could not put this book down. I liked how the story was in first person narrated by the main character. I also like how the author brings in small back story to keep the reader in the know and story line flowing. I will definitely read more from this author.

The Buccaneers is an exciting mystery suitable for readers of all ages. This book, set in the post-WWII era on a small island, delivers a cast of young teens who have formed a club to watch over their island, and hunt for clues to get answers to their questions. The story centres around the island’s latest mystery, which becomes more tangled and complex as the kids share information, hunt down clues, and dare to explore shadowy caves in pursuit of their villain. It is reminiscent of the Scooby Doo gang as they head toward “unmasking” the dastardly troublemakers.
I found the story to be fast-paced and very plot-driven. Much happens in these 89 pages, and keeping up with the events was sometimes challenging. I wish there had been more introduction to various plot points; I often found myself confused in the twisting action. More description of the physical island and background on the various relationships would have been valuable, and made this easier to follow for me. All in all though, it was a good story with lots of action, and I would recommend it to other lovers of Young Adult whodunnit-type books.

This book was a quick and entertaining read. There are a lot of fun witty moments in this story. These kids all want to be detectives and they are determined to find out who stole the money they worked hard to raise so they could donate to charity. Their club house burns down which is a small set back for them but they are very tenacious kids. They do get some help from a few adults on the island as well. Even though this is a quick read it is rich in detail. This book took me on a sweet adventure with mystery that is good for all ages. I recommend this book.

This is full of emotions, adventure, coming of age undertones and more! We get to follow along as a group of children set out to right the wrong they were done when money they raised for a good cause has gone missing. They put together their own sleuthing club to investigate and the adventure takes off from there. I shared this with my kids over a few evenings before bed, at 84 pages it really is a short fun shareable read for bedtime. I look forward to seeing what else is available from Linda Maria Frank!

This is a kids story reminiscent of the famous five with the same scenario of a group of eighth graders investigating a mystery, but this is set on St Fredericks Island in 1947 and the kids are the Buccaneers, so named after the famous pirate Jon Buccleigh who lived there in the past. The mystery they want to solve is who has stolen their collection money for homeless kids in NYC which they worked so hard to raise after it was stolen from the Vestry.

Sprocket is the leader of the group and so she is trying to write a secret note under the watchful eye of one of the nuns who run the school, just as she is working out how to hide it and the fact she hasn’t done anything of what she was meant to be doing, the fire alarm sounds for a drill and the evidence remains hidden for now. Later on, when Sprocket gets home, things take a turn for the worse when she finds out that their meeting place, a shack on the beach, has been burned down in the middle of the day, fortunately nobody was hurt, but a message needs to be passed through their secret system to tell the other Buccaneers the news, she wants to go and see it, so her mum goes with her and Frank (another buccaneer) joins her there. Someone else is there as well, a friend of theirs who lives in another of the beach shacks, it turns out he has been doing a bit of investigating himself and has found something, but needs to do some further questioning to find out what it’s relevance is.

On the way back fo Sprocket’s house, talk turns to the local newspaper and the articles both currently in it and plans for articles in the future, but as soon as they get there, something is wrong, it looked like someone had broken in, so when Frank is chased out of the house, it is a surprise to them all. As they lock up the house, talk turns to a Native American woman who has started to write a column about her healing arts, it turns out that she has had a threatening letter since starting the column and is a little worries, it turns out her daughter is in the same year as the Buccaneers, but not in the same class as Sprocket.

With this extra layer of intrigue added onto the stolen money and burned down beach hut, the Buccaneers agree to meet in an old cave to discuss what they need to do next and how they are going to do it, however, as they continue the investigation, they have no idea how dangerous it is about to become or how many people are actually involved, especially when the native american’s lady’s daughter disappears. Will the Buccaneers be able to solve the mystery and find out where the missing money and girl are, never mind who was behind burning down the beach hut, or are they in over their heads?

This is a mystery full of intrigue, danger and investigative espionage and even though it is a book for kids, adults will enjoy it as well.

Working together they have to stop the strange men who come to blackmail Janet to get her mom to sell black market medicines.
