This book is a breath of fresh air. It gives you new perspectives on things and shows you how to enjoy the simple things. It teaches you how to stop and smell the roses and enjoy the beauty around you. The main character is going on a trip by herself and she doesn’t really know why but just knows she needs to go. While there she is introduced to all kinds of unique characters and is reminded to be content in every season.

She doesn’t exactly know why she chose this place other than she wanted to be surprised by an experience. It just called to her. While there she meets up with three guides who help her in different ways. The guides are spirits that have been looking over this piece of land since before it was inhabited by people. This was a fairly interesting book about one’s quest to discover and possibly reinvent themselves. I found the story unique in how the past and present are interwoven and an enjoyable read.

I’ve picked up books by this author before, so I knew when I picked it up that I was in for a wonderful read. Despite its brevity, this is a story rich in discovery and insight as the author blurs the line between fantasy and reality. We journey with Molly as she seeks a retreat from the mundane but isn’t quite sure why. What unfolds is a tapestry of magical realism where spirits, art, and the desert landscape intertwine to explore themes of love, grief, and personal discovery.
This book invites readers to ponder how the past influences our present, and how sometimes stepping away from our familiar lives can lead to profound realizations. The author masterfully crafts a narrative filled with whimsy and depth. I don’t want to give too much away because I would be robbing you of a phenomenal read! I was captivated throughout by this magical realism novella. The main character Molly, a lady in her early fifties, is such a likeable and relatable character that I felt instantly invested in her journey. Wanting a new experience Molly decides to take a well earned vacation to the tiny town of Holy Land in New Mexico. Her time away turns out to be both “surprising” and “interesting” as she goes on a journey of self-discovery. The intriguing storyline is a mix of the real and the magical as Molly encounters petroglyphs, rattlesnakes and vultures, alongside spirits and ghosts. The setting was brought vividly to life through the descriptive narrative which made me feel immersed in the story. This was an enjoyable and inspiring read and one which I recommend reading!

The Holey Land by Laura Koerber. This is such a fun book. Its quite different than anything I’ve ever read. Its the story of Molly who has decided to take a solo trip to New Mexico. She’s not really sure she is going there but she just knows she has to. Molly is middle aged and in my mind she is going thru the middle age crazies. She wants to discover what is out there in this big old world. She ends up in The Holey Land, New Mexico and she meets up with three different guides who help her in different ways. There is magic, intrigue, mystery and self help all thrown in with real native philosophies. I loved that Molly was looking to reinvent herself and that she was brave enough to go out on a limb and try some new stuff even if it seems different and weird to her. This is a fun book about being middle age and trying to recreate yourself.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this story, but I am so glad I decided to pick it up. It’s a slightly quicker read, but the author does an amazing job of bringing to life this magical, funny, quirky tale. We have Molly, our protagonist who has decided to take a solo trip to a small town in Mexico for reasons even she can’t explain. As she pursues her journey of self-discovery, she meets 3 spirits who watch over the town and the people in it. The more she learns from them, the more she learns about herself. The author creates a world that starts as ordinary, but upon further inspection is filled with magic. Molly continues to find the magic and what she truly is looking for. This was a fantastic read and the author writes in a way that you really feel like you are right there in the story.

This is an interesting read. The author weaves storylines together in much the same way that natives use finger-weaving. The past, the ancient past, and the present collide in this pleasant nod to native culture. Supernatural creatures interact with people in the southwest desert region of America. This is a must-read.

This novel has captivating characters that pull you into magical realism, and they have fantastic tales to tell. Even though the tribe is fictional, the author did a fantastic job blending supernatural and fantasy. This story makes the everyday and mundane seems magical and filled with possibilities. The Holey Land by Laura Koerber is, as I expected, another original story with plenty of thought-provoking content. Ms. Koerber weaves magical realism with deft fingers, bringing complete believability to her work. This could be just another mid-life crisis story- but Ms. Koerber and her FMC Molly take us on much more of a journey of self-discovery- finding far more than she (Molly) expected- resulting in another well-woven tale with plenty of mysteriousness, magical realism, discovery/self-discovery, spirit guardians, drama, quirky characters, and emotion. This is another unique and thought provoking read by this author. It is captivating with characters that draw you in and that have fantastic tales to tell. What I really love about this authors work is that there is no fear of mixing reality and fantasy. Making the everyday and mundane seems magical and filled with possibilities. And this story is no different. Molly is middle aged woman who decides to go on a holiday by herself. She feels she needs to go on a journey to discover herself but she doesn’t know why? So she now finds herself in Holey land. She can’t explain why, did she choose the place or did something about the place call to her? We also meet Al, Nate and Anna. These are 3 guides that watch over Holey land and everyone who resides and visits there. They have been part of Holey Island even since it came into existence although their names have changed over the years. Nate helps people to live, Anna helps people die and Al well he is a law unto himself and does whatever he likes. Just don’t annoy him. Through the story Molly meets all these characters as they help her on her journey to discover what it is she is really looking for. This story is a really captivating read. This author never fails to create stories that are thought provoking and magical. I always feel transported when I read stories by this author.

The Holy Land is a cleverly written charming and fun tale full of unique and quirky characters some like spirit guides and guardians both seen and not seen that have been around since the start of time. OMG AL is just hysterical. A place where time seems to stand still and the past and present intwine. There is a mystery, a peace, a sense of belonging and most of all discoveries. Molly isn’t herself and not sure why and taking a holiday by herself and not with hubby is not something she usually does. What she needs can only be found in the Holy Land she just doesn’t know it yet. Did she pick the place, or did it pick her? You only have to look, really look to see what is there and what she discovers is exactly what she needs. Now I know that is all cryptic, but I don’t want to spoil things for you. You will need to read it to find out. Laura is known for her unconventional tales and The Holy Land is just that, but it is so much more, it is an intriguing read and full of mystery and magical realism. It may be a short story, but it is packed full. Journey along with Molly as she discovers some wonders in the world.

This book is another interesting and unique story from an author who really isn’t scared of pushing boundaries and writing something different. I really enjoyed this book and watching how it all unfolded. Everything felt interconnected and yet I always felt like the author could have taken it in a new direction at any time. The characters were all brilliant. Each fit with the story in their own way and added so much to what was going on. This is the kind of book I would love to rave about, but equally don’t want to spoil anything at all. I would recommend everyone read this and be prepared to be sucked in.
