The Discovery of Magic (The Intrigue of Magic Series) by L. J. Evias – Review by Kerry Baker

The Discovery of Magic (The Intrigue of Magic, #1)The Discovery of Magic by L. J. Evias
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is a great YA fantasy story that has a brilliant cast of characters. The friend group that is pulled through into a different world are a perfect mix of different personalities. They all have such unique experiences when they get there but it makes for a really interesting read.
The world building starts off slow, but it definitely doesn’t finish that way. You soon find yourself pulled into the story and wanting to discover even more about it. As the first book in a new series, this is a really great start and I am looking forward to seeing what else the series has to offer.

The Discovery of Magic (The Intrigue of Magic, #1)The Discovery of Magic by L. J. Evias
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The book starts out rather slow but don’t worry that will change. We first meet Alice and her friends and get a peek into their lives. Alice is trying to win an archery competition and scholarship. She hopes that her parents won’t want to make her move if she wins. An innocent afternoon at the park changes everything for them. The friends are transported through a portal to Parsa. What follows is a great adventure full of action, drama, danger, and magic. This book is a wonderful start to this series. Even though it starts slow the action and drama help to keep the story building throughout the book. Can’t wait to see where this series will take us next.

Wow! I almost passed this up and I am certainly glad I didn’t! I got so sucked into this story that I forgot the friend group was in a whole different world that wasn’t their own. The whole time I kept wondering why they were not more frantic to find Eliot or demand answers. That would terrify me to have my younger sibling lost. This world they are thrust into, Parsa, is so fantastical, with mages and magic, and the uniting of the north and south kingdoms. It is interesting to see how each person, Alice, Emily, Jordan and Jamie are all basically spit out through a portal into different parts of the kingdom, and are treated differently and have different experiences than the others, all the while trying to figure out a way to get back each other. Yasmin seems like a wonderful royal, she is a good friend to Alice but, it seems like her uncle, The Royal Mage, has her loyalty and has brainwashed her but, something seems off about him. Prince Darien also seems to be hiding something from everyone. I am saddened by Yasmin and Darien’s loss, by the way Javed seems to be treated and frustrated that they keep begging Alice to stay in their world with them, like why would she stay? She has a whole family and life back home. I really look forward to what comes next!

The Discovery of Magic (The Intrigue of Magic, #1)The Discovery of Magic by L. J. Evias
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was the first book I had picked up by this author, and it was a magically pleasant surprise! It’s an exhilarating dive into a world brimming with enchantment and intrigue. My favorite character throughout the story is Alice, an archer with a fierce desire for autonomy. The pacing of the narrative is commendable! It’s fast-paced yet allows for moments of reflection that deepen Alice’s character. It picks up as Alice and her friends cross into an ancient realm full of magic and danger. The author excels at world-building, painting vivid imagery that pulls you into the experience. Every character is well-developed, each with their own motivations and secrets that add depth to the narrative. The author’s knack for expertly crafting relatable dialogue and moments of levity balances the darker elements of the plot.

This is a marvelously promising start to The Intrigue of Magic series! It captivates with its blend of relatable characters, powerful enchantments, and relentless action. Fans of YA Fantasy will undoubtedly find themselves swept away in Alice’s adventure and eagerly awaiting the next installment. If you’re ready for a journey filled with mystery and magic, this book is a must-read!

This was a hefty book at over 500 pages long. It felt a little daunting before I started. The plot had me super interested though. VERY quickly after I started reading, I was hooked. I read this book much faster than I thought. I just couldn’t put it down. There is SO much in this book. So much detail, magic, drama, and the characters are wonderfully written. It is quite intense at times, but in such a good way. Despite being fantasy and including magic, it feels very real. You are transported into the characters world. What more can you ask for from a book, but to escape into it? I can’t wait to read future books in this series.

Great story. Very descriptive with interesting characters. The world building was fantastic. There was a lot of character growth. The interactions between the characters were good and described their thoughts and feelings really well. Great book for fantasy lovers who don’t want or like the graphic smutty stuff. I am looking forward to more books in the series.

The Discovery of Magic (The Intrigue of Magic Series) by L. J. Evias. This is a rather lengthy young adult fantasy read. Its over 500 pages so be prepared for a long read. It’s the story of young Alice who is a great archer and she is trying to convince her parents to let her compete for a scholarship that is highly sought after. While competing Alice and her friends somehow enter another portal and all kinds of strange things begin to happen. The story is full of challenges, mazes, mysteries, magic, mages, friendships, trust issues and more as Alice and her friends try to find their way back home. Alice is very much the teenage girl that is moody, wild and doesn’t think before she acts which can be problematic in lots of situations. Alice has to determine who she can really trust and if her friends are really her friends. When and if they find their way back home will they still be friends? Read this amazing young adult fantasy to find out!

The Discovery of Magic (The Intrigue of Magic, #1)The Discovery of Magic by L. J. Evias
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Discovery of Magic by L.J. Evias is such a wonderful Teen/YA Adult to start of the book series “The Intrigue of Magic”. The book begins a bit slow for me personally, but I do think that a teen would be more appreciative of the beginning as it shows a lot of the mind of a teenager and them just going through each day. Alice and her friends one day are having a picnic when they stumble upon a portal in a cave, which takes them to a different world named Parsas. The book mainly follows the friends as they are trying to figure out this new world and also are trying to get back home. Alice and her friends are seperated from each other, each thrown in this new world in different locations. Each of them is quickly emerged into the war of the North and South, but Alice is thrown into the feeding frenzy of royal court and starts to be weary of her new “allies”.

The author did a wonderful job with world building and character development, my only issue is the speed of the book sometimes felt a little slow and some character interactions felt forced. But otherwise was a wonderful book, and start to a new series. I am intrigued to see where the author takes this series from here.

Wow I can’t believe I have never read anything by Evias before! This book was absolutely amazing! Following Alice and friends while they navigate different parts of Parsa evoked almost a nostalgic feeling of being a teenager again! As someone who used to be in the archery club at my highschool it made me really happy that Alice was an archer. Evias is an author to for sure look out for! With wonderful characters and a solid fast paced plot The Discovery Of Magic pulls you into a world you don’t ever want to leave! I cannot wait for the second book!

The Discovery of Magic (The Intrigue of Magic, #1)The Discovery of Magic by L. J. Evias
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Discovery of Magic by L. J. Evias is book one in The Intrigue of Magic series. Alice is a fantastic archer and she competes for a scholarship in hopes that it is enough to convince her parents to remain stationary and not move her away from her friends. While the book begins a bit slow, it gives the reader the opportunity to observe going through the normal motions of being a teenager with Alice and her friends before things take a drastic and unexpected turn for all of them. Entering into a realm of magic and political war in Parsa, the story is written so that we can experience the adventure with many of the characters. While moving around from different characters doesn’t always work well in every story, I really loved getting to experience the adventure in different perspectives and felt it worked perfectly here. I thought the writing was really wonderful. Descriptive enough without going overboard. The characters were well-developed and very interesting and engaging. If you enjoy a good YA with a little bit of everything to offer- a touch of romance, drama, magic, adventure, danger- you may really enjoy delving into this fantasy world! Definitely excited to see where the next book leads to!

The Discovery of Magic (The Intrigue of Magic, #1)The Discovery of Magic by L. J. Evias
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3 – 3.5 stars

The Discovery of Magic is an intriguing read and L.J. has craftily woven plots amongst plots as the adventure of new worlds, magic, mayhem and friendship ride out in this epic fantasy.
The story starts out strong but there are a few ebbs and flows along the way that slow things down at times, but it does sort itself out and was still an interesting read.
The Discovery of Magic is told in multiple POV of the engaging characters, and it is those friendships/relationships that make the story. It is a journey where there is magic and many things for them to learn and explore as they travel through portals, worlds and people. But there are also lies, secrets, and conniving and menacing characters that they must deal with along the way.
Things were left unanswered in the end, so we have to wait for the next book to see how things pan out.

The Discovery of Magic (The Intrigue of Magic, #1)The Discovery of Magic by L. J. Evias
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

L. J. Evias is a first time author for me, but after reading The Discovery of Magic, it certainly won’t be the last. The Discovery of Magic is the first book in the Intrigue of Magic Series. This Young Adult Fantasy book is lengthy, 545 pages, but has so much included; drama, mystery, danger, friendship, “normal” teenage angst, and of course, magic! The world building is amazing; I could feel the tension and confusion as Alice and her friends navigate the magical world of Parsa, see the desert sands of South Parsa, and experience the opulence of the palace in North Parsa. The characters in this book are all well-constructed, realistic (even the magical characters), and believable. While Alice, Jamie, Jordan, Emily, Yasmin, and Darien are the main characters, there are many other engaging individuals who make the story complete. Told from different point of views, The Discovery of Magic has plenty of twists and turns that connect to one another in an oddly satisfying way. I cannot wait for the next book in the Intrigue of Magic Series.

The Discovery of Magic (The Intrigue of Magic, #1)The Discovery of Magic by L. J. Evias
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Discovery of Magic is the first book in the The Intrigue of Magic series. This new fantasy series delves into the world of Alice and her friends. She has convinced her parents to let her compete for a highly prized scholarship. In doing so, Alice and her friends discover a new realm after going through a portal. Will Alice and her friends get through their adventurous ordeal?
The story builds characters, the story, and the world well. Once I got into the book, I wanted to know what would happen to the characters. The POV changes to tell what happens with each main character once separated. It took me a bit to nail down each storyline, but it made the book enjoyable with so many different aspects to consider. I was left wanting more.
I look forward to reading the next book to see what happens next.

The Discovery of Magic is the first book in The Intrigue of Magic by L.J. Evias. It is a fantastic YA fantasy full of action, adventure, mystery, politics, agendas, magic, drama, danger, fate, mages, quirky characters, tension, intriguing developments, friendship, challenges, emotion, and travelling to different realms.
And it comes with a MAP!!! I love when a story comes with a map so I can ‘see’ where places are- it really helps visualise everything so much more clearly. So, I was excited when I saw the map at the beginning of the book, and knew right away that I would enjoy the adventure- and I did! This might be my first read by L.J. Evias- but this book ensured that it won’t be the last.
Alice faces the prospect of losing all her friends with her parent’s desire to move the family to a place she has never even heard of. She is a talented archer, and puts all her hopes on winning a contest that comes with a scholarship, which will allow her to remain with her circle of friends. But little does she know that her world will be turned upside down when she and her friends discover a portal which transports them to a different realm. Now let the adventure begin!
I can’t wait to continue the series. Bring on Book #2!!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, L.J. Evias!
