Holmes continues this series in the way in which I expect – beautiful detailed history that comes to life in every page. If you are a fan of expertly written history, particularly ancient Egyptian lore, Holmes’s series is an immediate must read. Each story stands well on its own but for full enjoyment of character development I would recommend reading in series order. Another stellar work.

Lake of Flowers (The Lord Hani Mysteries, book 5) by N.L. Holmes. This is the 5th book in the Lord Hani series and its soo good. This is not my usual genre but I have fallen in love with this set of books. Its the continuing story of Lord Hani who has been thrown into a hole other set of drama that has nothing to do with him but regardless he’s in the middle of it. Hani has been asked to help the King with a problem and it drags his family including his daughter into the mess. Hani is trying to solve the problem and keep his daughter safe! This mystery all has to do with the Prince and his identity which involves government and radicals trying to take over. N.L. Holmes writes with such talent that you feel like you are there in the place she is describing and you are in the middle of Lord Hani’s mess. Will Lord Hani find out the mystery surrounding the Prince and will he keep his daughter and her friend safe? Read Lake of Flowers to find out! I can’t wait for Book #6!

Lake of Flowers is the fifth book in The Lord Hani Mysteries by N.L Holmes. As with the other books in this series, this is a mystery set in ancient Egypt- a story full of historical details that give it a rich and vibrant feel with plenty intrigue, drama, hidden agendas, politics, secrets, danger, duty, family, interesting characters, and more.
I have followed the series right from the beginning and have developed quite a soft spot for Hani, our MC in the series. He is a great character and I enjoy following him on his ‘adventures’. But this story isn’t about to let him ease up any- as there is a theft to investigate which leads to sinister agendas. Hani’s loyalty, duty, ideals, and diplomatic skills will be tested as he becomes caught in a battle between two warring forces. What transpires makes for a really great read.
As expected- this story once again showcases the authors passion for history- and especially this time period- her in-depth knowledge and familiarity with the historical aspects of the era really does enrich the whole story/series.
Looking forward to seeing what Hani gets up to next…
Happy Reading!!

Thank you, N.L Holmes!

This is a wonderful dive into Ancient Egypt, and all of the wonderful colours, sights, sounds, and possible intrigues. There are lots of characters and motives going on here, with interesting subplots that add depth to the story. It is rich with imagery of food, scenery, and costume; it is easy to picture yourself amongst the orchards or lush palaces. I have to admit that this was the only book I’ve read in the series, and so I found some of the character and governmental names to be challenging to recall and keep straight. However, there is a glossary of names and terms at the beginning which helped to reference things. All in all, this is a very well written work, that fans of Ancient Egypt will devour.

Lake of Flowers by N.L. Holmes is the fifth book in the Lord Hani Mystery series. This is a fantastic series that is so rich with detail that you can’t help but be drawn in. This book only adds to that. I would strongly recommend reading this series in order as it follows the same character throughout.
With this book we are taken on yet another intriguing journey with Lord Hani as he tries to figure our another mystery. It is always so easy to fall back in with this character, almost like you have never left him in the first place.
As with the rest of the series it is great that the authors obvious passion for history comes through. I think it adds to the whole experience. This is a great addition to the series and I am looking forward to whatever is next.

Lake of Flowers (The Lord Hani Mysteries #5) by N.L Holmes

This is another fantastic read by N.L Holmes. The Lord Hani Mysteries is a series I highly recommend. Each book keeps getting better and better.

Hani is once again put in the middle of something that doesn’t involve him. The Queen needs his help, but then he’s put in a dangerous spot. His daughter is also put in the middle of the same mess. The quote I chose Hani is: “I don’t know. There’ll almost certainly be an uprising as soon as the king dies. That may be the moment this whole bizarre experiment falls apart. I can’t imagine there are many real believers. Most people, like our Aha, are committed only to please the king and advance their careers.”

Highly recommended for Historical Mystery lovers.

Wow, what an excellent read! This was my first read from Holmes, but it will not be my last as I have to gobble up the rest of the books in this series. Despite this being my introduction to Lord Hani and the suspense surrounding his family, it was an easy read that kept me turning pages at all hours of the night. I appreciate how detailed the characters and setting were laid out, I could really visualize everything that happened in the story. Holmes background in archaeology played a huge role in the setting, politics, and character development. I definitely learned a thing or two throughout this book despite it being fiction. If you want something that will keep you in suspense and wanting more, I highly recommend this novel!

This is the fifth book in this series which I have enjoyed from the first book. I highly suggest that you read the previous books as they are just as great as this one. This is an author that I have enjoyed from the first book I picked up. The author’s use of details give their story a realistic feel and I am pulled into the story from the beginning. This book is no different. This is a well written story that has characters that bring the story to life. They are relatable and truly give the story life. This is a story about thefts that are happening in the King’s house. As the story goes on Hani finds himself caught in the middle of secrets and more. He is such a great character that I just enjoy him and what he brings to the story. This was a great afternoon story that I highly recommend.

Anytime I have an N.L. Holmes book to read I am a happy camper. Lake of Flowers (The Lord Hani Mysteries, book 5) is one more excellent read in the series. I find that I am so in love with Lord Hani’s family. I never know what’s going to happen next. He and his family live in a dangerous time. Always on guard, always taking care around the royalty they live under. Amusingly enough I find many parallels between our culture and society today and Lord Hani’s. If you love a good mystery, this is your book. If you love history, ancient history, again this is the book for you. I tried very hard this time to take my time and savor this story. I did very well until I got to the last quarter of the book and I just lost all control. Ms. Holmes has a very descriptive writing style and I love to read it. It’s not just the story, it’s the way she strings the words together. A delight to read. My top author for the year so far.

Book 5, Lake of Flowers is the last book in the series in The Lord Hani Mysteries by N.L. Holmes is set in Ancient Egypt where NL’s passion lies. This series is not just a story they are also a lesson in history. Lord Hani is once again thrust into the thick of things that always sets himself and family into trouble and worry as he sets about to discover who is behind this latest mystery. Only this time it may all prove too much and possibly divide loyalties. I have said before and it is just as true with this book and that is that NL paints a vivid narrative, and her writing invites you into the journey and brings the characters to life.

The North Wind Descends (The Lord Hani Mysteries Book 4) by N.L. Holmes – Review by Anantha Rusum

The North Wind DescendsThe North Wind Descends by N.L. Holmes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I came back to this series after a gap, I had read the first one, The lightning horse but did not read books 2 and 3. So I was a little apprehensive when I picked this book. I had the background of the characters but over the span of four books, they have all changed, aged and characters have been introduced.
The book starts off with a murder mystery which the Egyptian diplomat Hani has to solve and this time around, a specific request from the queen has to be honored.
The plot is complex, and there are lots of twists and turns. There is a murderer on loose and Hani’s family is in jeopardy. His daughter also gets involved and Hani finds himself tangled in a complex puzzle which becomes increasingly difficult to solve.
This book blends historic fiction and mystery beautifully. It is a very fast read, and it keeps the readers on their toes on what is coming next. Overall, a very compelling and an enjoyable read.

Each book includes plenty of historical background that keeps you filled in on their environment. The author does a good job setting the family background and dianamentics. This book can be read as a stand alone or as I recommend in order.

I love it when an author can transport you to another country and not only give you a mystery to solve but give you a real sense of being in that country, and environment. At the same time reading how two plots are woven into one story keeps the reader enthralled in the book, Lord Hani and his assistant has to solve the mystery of the tomb-robberies and the plague that threatens all of the people. The North Wind Descends (The Lord Hani Mysteries Book 4) by N.L. Holmes, is another excellent book. I can’t say enough good things about N.L.Holmes and her excellent ancient history novels. Besides her artistic use of the English language to evoke signs and sounds that take the reader to ancient Egypt, I love the way her characters sound like any normal family you know. Not only is the Lord Hani hot on the trail of a new mystery, but this mystery is also wrapped in family love. This is quite a contrast to the villain in the story. Time is never wasted with an N.L.Holmes book.

The rich tapestry that N.L.Holmes weaves in her wonderful Lord Hani mysteries will keep you turning page after page. Set in ancient Egypt, it is a historical fiction lovers dream. The mystery of the tomb robbers is not the only plot in this tale, but it seems quite ironic that a plague is also a part of this story, in view of our own current events. Lord Hani’s love for his family and his countrymen is a big win for me. I love how Holmes accurate descriptions make this story come alive and I love the historical notes she includes. The Scepter of Flint is my favorite Lord Hani mystery so far. I enjoyed the dual issue of both a high profile tomb robbery and the political ramifications of investigating foreign diplomats as potential suspects. I’m also a huge fan of the time period, set during the reign of the immortally glamorous queen Nefertiti and her notoriously unpopular husband, Akhenaten. This is one of the most interesting historical points in Ancient Egypt, and you get to explore both the events of the time and N.L. Holmes’ layered plot and fun characters.

This is the fourth book in The Lord Hani Mysteries Series. Holmes has done it again. She knows how to capture a reader’s attention. I can’t wait for more of her work.

Lord Hani is conflicted. He wants to protect his family, but he also has a job to do. Things aren’t easy for him and he doesn’t know what to make of it. The King’s attention and the Queen’s new task is taking a lot out of him.

Hani goes to find what is going on when he learns that he may have to do something when he doesn’t want to. The quote I chose for Hani is: ‘All these good people are here to wish me well. They’re probably happier than I am about this.’

Highly recommended for Historical Crime lovers.

This is the 4th book in the Lord Hani  Mysteries series. I really can’t praise these books enough. They are full of Ancient Egyptian history and mystery which are my two favourite things. The authors knowledge of the time period is very good and they really give you a sense of what life would be like in the times of Ancient Egypt.

Lord Hani is back and when he is honoured by the king he wonders why? All through the kings reign Lord Hani has been a thorn in the kings side so why now is he being honoured. Things aren’t what they seem of that Hani is sure.

Add to this a task he is asked to complete with means getting his daughter involved in court politics and Hani struggles to protect her and keep her out of things.

Why did the king give him this honour? Can he protect his daughter and stop the court politics from involving her or is it too late to protect her anymore.

The North Wind DescendsThe North Wind Descends by N.L. Holmes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The North Wind Descends is the fourth book in N.L. Holmes’ fascinating Lord Hani Mysteries series. Like the previous books, it is an enticing mystery with a vivid historical setting in Ancient Egypt. Holmes draws on a strong academic background to build a setting that is full of detail and accuracy of everyday and court life.
The main duo, Hani and Maya, are something of an Egyptian Sherlock Holmes and John Watson (Holmes’ nom de plume leaves readers in no doubt of this influence!). Maya, Hani’s son-in-law, is more than happy to assist the newly decorated Master of the King’s Stable, as he is always excited to go home and tell the stories of their adventures.
As the series has progressed, Hani’s children are getting older and more established, and so add more layers to the story. Hani’s son Pa-kiki, who is working as a scribe, joins his father on his parts of his adventure. Hani’s daughter Neferet’s work as a healer has given her access to, and opinions about, the royal family which may well get her into danger.
My favourite thing about this series is how real the world feels. Holmes gives us plenty of details, such as what food is eaten and even what smells there are, without drawing away from the pacing of the story. The book really transports readers to a different time and place.
For me, this is a five-star read. I’d recommend it to mystery fans wanting something a bit different, as well as anyone who needs a change of scenery without leaving their homes!

This book sent me on a roller coaster ride. I felt compelled to keep reading. The story kept my attention from the first sentence until the last word. The main character Hani is a great detective who is trying to figure out who is robbing the tombs. He is also having a slight problem with the witnesses ending up dead. Can Hani figure out who is behind the robberies and murders? I highly recommend this book and the whole series.

The North Wind Descends is a delightful dive into ancient Egypt. If you enjoy historical settings and submerging yourself into ancient cultures, this book keeps you pleasantly engaged. The story follows Lord Hani on a diplomatic mission that unravels as he tackles a murder mystery, deceitful ploys and political intrigue.

My only nitpick would be the pacing. The narrative could have been trimmed down to focus more on the plot. I adore historical fiction, but sometimes even I felt bogged down by the ancient names and terminology. Otherwise, the characters really shone through and I was invested in Lord Hani’s adventure. You don’t have to worry about reading the series out of order either because this was my first Lord Hani mystery and it wasn’t a problem that it was the fourth book. Overall, The North Wind Descends is a pleasant read and a fun escape into the past.

‘The North Wind Descends’ is book four in, ‘The Lord Hani Mysteries’ series and having read the previous books in the series I was looking forward to this novel and was definitely not disappointed. It can be read as a standalone story, however I feel that the reader will enjoy the novels more if they are read in order. Set in ancient Egypt, around 1340 BCE, Lord Hani, an Egyptian Diplomat and his assistant Maya have another crime mystery to solve. Hani is confused when the king starts honouring him but he must not let that get in the way of discovering the identity of a man who was responsible for killing a foreign ambassador right under the roof of the Egyptian commissioner in Kumidi. As well as being a diplomat Hani is also a loving family man and so he is concerned when the queen of the new coregent gives him a special task which may involve Hani’s nineteen year old daughter as he does not want her caught up in court politics. Hani therefore must see justice done but in away that protects his family.

The authors knowledge and research shines through in her writing and I found the list of characters at the beginning of the book very helpful as there are a lot of characters to keep up with. The Glossary of Places, Terms, and Gods, is also a useful addition at the beginning of the book and one which I referred back to at times. The author really brings ancient Egypt to life with her wonderfully descriptive narrative and world building and this really helps set the scene for this novel. Hani makes a great main character as he is well defined and is both relatable and likeable and he really brings the plot together. The storyline flows well and the plot is fast paced and full of action, drama and mystery which had me gripped from start to finish. The twists and turns kept me guessing and I enjoyed figuring out the mystery element of the book alongside Lord Hani. I look forward to future books in this enjoyable and engaging series.

This is the 3rd book in the Lord Hani Mysteries series. I love these books as it contains my two favourite subjects. Ancient Egypt and mystery.  When I first started the series I thought it would be hard to follow with all the ancient names and God’s but the way they are written makes them easy to follow and most of the characters are in all 3 books so I recommend reading them from the beginning.

In this book we are back with Lord Hani who has been given a new assignment. There has been some tomb robberies but who is responsible for them? With the new prince taking over and changes to everyone’s way of life Hani doesn’t know who to trust. Could it be that the new Prince is actually behind the robberies? Lord Hani has a impossible task to get to the bottom of this mystery.
