This was such a great book! I couldn’t put it down. Kella and Huck were so relatable. I felt like we were lifelong friends. I loved all the sarcasm throughout the book, a few times I laughed out loud. I really enjoyed all the details that made me feel like I was there with them and seeing everything. The underlying message of you are stronger than you believe is something important for everyone to learn and understand. I definitely recommend this book! You won’t be disappointed!

WOW!! This book captured my attention from the moment that I started reading it until the moment that I finished it. I could not put it down, I had to know what was happening! My favorite part of this book was getting to know the characters throughout their journey from the first moment that we met them, from the final page. If you enjoy reading books that depict what people go through when there is an apocalypse, then this is the book for you!! I cannot wait to read more books written by this author!

This was my first time reading Kendra Griffin, but was well-rewarded with this witty, humorous, sometimes terrifying book full of twists and turns. I was unaware that this was a part of a bigger series, but Apocalypse Thoughts reads almost like a stand-alone. The plot definitely hit a little differently as I was reading it while quarantined with COVID. Kella, the female protagonist, writes and sketches her thoughts while on their journey north from Atlanta. Her thoughts are funny and realistic and reflect her inner-most thoughts. Apocalypse Thoughts is intended for a young adult audience and I enjoyed the fact there was no swearing and no overly sexual content.

As with a ton of the other readers, I found reading this novel with what we are dealing with in the real world added an amazing way of thinking allowing me to really dive deep into Kella, Jumper, and Huck’s adventure.
I adored the way we are experiencing this through Kella, getting to relate to all her sassy thoughts and internal struggles as a seventeen year old going through the ETM. No longer worried about regular teenage thoughts and trying to navigate the world as it’s fine through major changes.
Overall, I enjoyed this refreshing take on apocalyptic times, certainly unlike anything I’ve read before. I will be going back to read the prologue and look forward to more of Kella to come. Thoroughly enjoyed this authors ability to grab me and pull me in through her writing style and incredible character and world building. Highly recommend!

This book was funny, heart wrenching, hopeful, and so much more. I loved listening on Kella’s thoughts. This was exactly how people thought a worldwide plaque would be like and I’m so thankful we are not at this point. This book was so wonderfully written and thought provoking. I was honestly hesitant to read it based on the description but am so incredibly happy I did. I found my heart racing many times throughout the book and reading with crossed fingers. I hope there is more to come within this series as I have to know what is going to happen next!

I really enjoyed reading and experiencing Kella and Huck’s sibling love for each other. Huck is so much like me in his own world up high above the rest. The details and story line were so mind catching that once you start you gotta finish it. The only thing is it keeps you wanting to read more!!! I can’t wait for the next!!! What’s next?! Kella O’Malley is seventeen and along with a couple of others, is trailing across the Appalachian Trail, not because it is spring break and she fancies a hike from Georgia towards the north, it is because she is being chased by cannibals. While she was visiting family, she inadvertently ends up surviving an apocalypse, one which has created a mutation which turns humans into shrieking “Hyena’s” and Kella is carrying the only copy of some data from the CDC which could help them all to survive.
As they try to outrun the Hyena’s and trying to fend off blisters, hunger and exhaustion, as well as caffeine withdrawal and a lack of condiments, they face other challenges but Kella is trying to keep everyone’s spirits up by looking after them the only way she knows how and all the while, she is finding her own way to cope by reading the trail logbooks she finds along the way, but as well as reading them, she also writes her thoughts in them, her apocalypse thoughts.
There is more danger than nature while they hike, however, they also come across others and join up with them and make a larger group made up of teens and twenty somethings who are going in the same direction, even if not with the same goals, however, the idea of safety in numbers is not always true. As the trail continues and danger lurks around every corner, Kella decides to set some goals, to keep her family alive, survive long enough to complete their mission and maybe fall in love, but what if that is just as terrifying as murder hornets, the apocalypse, or even Hyena’s? Maybe not Hyena’s but it could still be scary, but so is the YA novel, it keeps you on your toes throughout as you try and work out what will happen next, it is unpredictable, funny and horrifying all at the same time, but it will hook you in and you will not want to put it down.

This was an exciting and action packed page turner YA novel, which had me hooked from start to finish. Set during an apocalypse, the author does a wonderful job of world building, and makes living during an apocalypse come to life. The vivid setting made me feel immersed in the story and I felt engaged with the unique characters, especially with the main heroine of the story, Kella O’Malley. She is seventeen and is a likeable and relatable young lady who brings the story together. Along with her brother, Kella has joined a group of young people to take precious CDC data north along the Appalachian Trail.
A pandemic has made humans mutate into feral cannibals, and no one knows what caused this or how fast the mutation spreads. Therefore the survivors must hike as fast as they can and stay ahead of the “Hyenas”. All this and it was supposed to be Kella’s spring break. Kella, who suffers from severe caffeine withdrawal, from a shortage of coffee, writes in her shelter logbook, and her entries although dark are lighthearted and witty. The storyline is intriguing and original and the plot kept me happily turning the pages. An enjoyable YA novel which I recommend to adults as well.

An edge of your seat adventure with a whole lot of heart! Explore the ETM, the End Times, Maybe! This YA dystopian novel follows seventeen year old Kella O,Malley, her brother Huck, and their friends as they traverse the Appalachian trail, armed with CDC data that could be the world’s only hope against the “hyenas”. Mutated humans, caused by a pandemic that’s been quickly spreading, turning them into vicious cannibals. OMG! This book had me up all night drinking plenty of coffee! (sorry Kella). I absolutely loved it! Kella is such a beautifully written character, I was rooting for her from page one. The sibling relationship between her and Huck is so genuine it made me think of my siblings and I. This is truly a YA book that everyone will love for its humor, sarcasm, wit, and relatable characters that you can’t help but fall in love with!

Apocalypse Thoughts (The Pox Series Book 5) by Kendra Griffin. This is a great young adult read. Its the 5th book in the series which I didn’t realize so it can be read as a standalone. The story revolves around a 17 year old girl named Kella who has taken to the Appalachian Trail to find a cure for the POX virus that has turned tons of people into cannibals and mutating everyday. Kella is determined to take care of her brother and keep him safe. Her brother Huck and her cousin Jumper travel along trying to fight for their lives and find a cure along the way. Kella has the best outlook on things which I think helps everyone along. She’s funny and tries to keep everyone uplifted. Will Kella, Huck and Jumper get the cure to where it needs to be before everyone is swallowed up by this virus? Read Apocalypse Thoughts to find out!

There is soo much to say about this book! Its a truly gripping tale that takes you on the best emotional roller coaster ride you didn’t expect to go on. I felt such a bond with many of the characters in this book, and felt may self-reflective moments about how this could be me or someone I love living this story. I can say I was rooting for everyone in this story to make it.
The main character and narrator is a brave, loyal, independent, coming of age girl named Kella. She tells her story with honesty, optimism, clarity, anxiousness, fear, and of course bits of anger. The Apocalypse is now and Kella just wants to survive and take care of her brother Huck. With Huck and her cousin Jumper they begin a trek to along the Appalachian Trails armed with vital information that could change everything. As they fight to survive they come across many people who want what they have and are out to get them, or who have been infected with this virus and are trying to infect them. This journey brings in many characters that become new friends/allies in this deteriorating world, and then others who are that wolf in sheep’s clothing. What will become of Kella? Will her and her companions make it through to the end, or is all lost?

I often struggle with YA books and the fact that they either villianize adults in general or make the kids not kid like, or not smart enough to handle scary scenarios. (But who doesn’t like a good dystopian style book?) This book is so well written, shows the strength kids, their perception and wittiness, how capable and intelligent they are – while still keeping them relatable and realistic. Kella is truly a good, likable character and such a great narrator. I really enjoyed this book and will definitely read it again. I’m watching this author, her writing is so well done I couldn’t put this book down.

This was a new to me author and series, and I didn’t even realize this going into it that it was the fifth book in the series. It didn’t at all inhibit me from enjoying the book at all and only really has me want to go back and enjoy the others in the series now. I thought this book was quite poignant given the world is going through COVID-19 right now, so it just hit close to home several times while reading. Our world is kind of falling apart around us and we have a main character who is also experiencing this and taking matters into her own hands and kicking butt. I loved the comedic relief at times that made me feel as if the world was less hopeless for her as well. I look forward to seeing what the other books have for me and what other books may be to come.

This book was very unique. I find a lot of “zombie” books are all the same but this one was so different. You follow 3 family members travelling through the apocalypse towards North in hope to bring a cure to the CDC. Kella, the main character, is writing her own little survival journal which gives the book a refreshing escape from reality.
Kella’s younger brother sees things differently than other people which causes a lot of others to be annoyed by him. It seems he is autistic, although the author never comes out and says it. Its nice to see someone “different” incorporated into a story. He sees the world as one big video game.
I fell in love with Kella first thing, she’s intelligent, witty, sarcastic. A typical 17 year old.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a different take on a zombie story.

Reading Apocalypse Thoughts during our current Covid pandemic hit really close to all the feelings. I had to take breaks just to ponder over certain aspects that we are currently facing in today’s world. Yes, there are bigger themes such as cannibal humans due to the virus, but the way the POX virus mutated, went through stages, changed people and how society and government reacted is so fitting for our current time. The story itself centers on Kendra, Huck, and Jumper, who along the way meet new companions on their quest to save humanity from the virus. We are taken along the Appalachian Trail and their fight to survive. All the characters are amazing and written well. The author makes you feel connected to them all and want them to survive whatever difficulties their mission takes them on. Highly recommend and now I’m going to anxiously await the next installment as we were left with a sense of unknowing.

So to start real quick: I haven’t read a YA novel in quite sometime but DAMN YALL. This was a GOOD one and made me remember why I LOVE YA novels. Kella is an awesome character that shows a lot of layers to herself (instead of being a “typical teenager”). She’s protective of Huck (let’s be honest- he’s my favorite), brave, and honestly hilarious. I can definitely see people becoming very immersed (and maybe a little frightened) with this book because of the pandemic we are all in! I just really enjoyed it and was really surprised to learn that there are books previous to this one. (Because I didn’t feel lost or anything!) but I’m happy that there are previous ones because now I have more to read while I wait for the sequel! I love apocalyptic stories and this was a great one- check it out y’all!

What a story to read in the current climate. A book like this has never quite hit so close to home and I have to say it made for a much more interesting read. This book is aimed at the YA audience but the author has done a fantastic job of creating a story that resonates with all ages. I had no trouble at all connecting with the story and the characters. I really became invested in their story. This is the kind of book that you have to read in one sitting because you umhuatbhave to know what happens. I thought this was well written and so exciting to read. I would highly recommend this book.

I absolutely loved this book! From the moment that I read the synopsis, I knew that I had to read this. A post-apocalyptic story that fits too well into our covid-ridden world. There were many similarities between the people and events in this book to our current pandemic — other than the hyenas/zombies attacking the main characters! I really enjoyed the characters and hope to read more about Kella, Huck, Jumper, and Finch in the next book!

Simply Amazing. This book is a fantastic read about the possible end of the world. It is not the run of the mill apocalypse story with Hollywood zombies. It is a fresh view on how a sudden pandemic can turn humans into “zombies” or as the book calls them “Hyenas”, which are mutated humans with lethal bite as opposed to rotting walking dead bodies. Kella along with her little brother Huck and cousin Jumper are carrying vital CDC information along the Appalachian trail. Technology is down leaving them to travel the journey to hopefully save the world. Through the story you get a sense of each character and their relationship with the other characters. They are relatable and so easy to connect with that you don’t want to put the book down. I for sure did not want to stop reading once I started this book. I cannot wait to continue on reading this series.

This book was amazing. Kella was super relatable. So, was her relationship with Huck because we all strive to love our siblings and try to keep them safe. This book was phenomenal! Kella and Huck have such an amazing sibling relationship, and tying that in with their relationship with Jumper is truly heartwarming, the way they take care of each other. All of the references to Lord of the Rings also kept me smiling, with the way they communicated with each other building relationships in the midst of the turmoil the was the ETM. I cant wait to see how Gazer, Huck, and Kella band together to get out of this new conflict. Honestly, the way this story was written was truly a masterpiece and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

I absolutely LOVE dystopian novels. They are probably my favorite type of book. When I got my hands on this one, I could not put it down. This novel goes above and beyond the typical dystopian world. Considering everything we, as society, have been through during the pandemic, it is highly relatable. Which, if you think about it, is incredibly scary to think about.
These characters are very easy to love. Each one found a place in my heart instantly. Everyone except Slingshot. You will find out soon enough why I cannot place her in the same category as the others. The storyline and characters are addicting, just like watching your favorite TV show. I guarantee you will be fascinated by this, just as I was.

Apocalypse Thoughts: A Story for the Possible End Times (The Pox Series) by Kendra Griffin is a cleverly woven young adult dystopian post-apocalyptic fun adventure story. This has so much going on in it- but in a great way. From action, danger, and endeavouring to survive a world-ending pandemic, to self-discovery, humour, and facing the odds- this story swept me up and had me engrossed right from the beginning. Kella is a great character- she may only be seventeen- but she has the presence of someone much older. She was really easy to like, and I quickly became invested in her and the outcome of the story. I didn’t realise coming into this book that it is the fifth book in the series, but thankfully I never felt lost, or like I was missing anything vitally important by not having read the previous books first. But having said that, my curiosity has definitely been sparked and I will absolutely be going back to explore the other instalments asap- I’m excited by what I might find there. Happy Reading!

This is the first book in this series and a first story written by this author for me. I was quite surprised by how enjoyable I found it to be. I especially found it relatable reading certain parts since we have been living in a world surviving COVID. Considering this is a “story for the possible end times” I had some feelings of déjà vu. I think that the author did a wonderful job describing this dystopian environment. The characters are so relatable and lovable. Even the adversaries in this book had me rooting them on. And that’s not something I do quite often. I read this book in a day because I didn’t want to put it down. Seriously, I was biting my nails during certain scenes and chapters. I highly recommend this book not just for young adults but for adults to read as well. Please pick up this book. It may save your life one day.

I liked this novel. I enjoy post apocalyptic novels and zombie novels so this novel checked both of these marks. I like these kind of novels because they offer a look at how quickly civilization and people fall apart when something catastrophic happens. The author created a really interesting story and I couldn’t stop reading it until the end. The author introduced a bit of a curve ball at the end and I cannot wait to see where this curve goes in the next book.

This is a great adventure story for young adults. The author does an amazing job of describe the world that is now taken over by a virus that is turning humans into cannibals. Now she is on a trail with special data about the virus which they need to deliver. With some other survivers she starts her journey away from danger, however danger is always on step behind them.
Our main character Kella is a young girl going into womanhood so as well as dealing with the end of the world she also has to deal with self doubt and worries that come from maturing into a woman. Kella’s character is relatable for most young women who at one time or another will have experienced the same feelings. This is a great young adult adventure which will keep a reader hooked from the first page. You are taken on an adventure where Kella doesn’t know who she can trust or what she needs to do. All she knows is she needs to get the information she has to CDC however will the cost of this mean risking her life? Will she be able to protect her brother? Or will they both get sick of their bossy cousin who is trying to rule them?

Loved this book! This read is for young and old and totally up my dystopian alley. With everything going on right now in real life with COVID, this story reminds me of our current times. My favorite character is Huck with being a bookworm like myself. I also loved how strong Kella was and protective to make sure her brother, Huck, stays safe and also along for the ride is her cousin Jumper while trying to outrun the “hyenas”. This book is truly a fun read and I highly recommend!

Wow! This book was great! It drew so many parallels to the time we are living in right now. It scared me to think that this could be a possible future we could be looking at. Kalla is a 17, just about to turn 18 year old girl who is trapped in a nightmare. The Apocalypse is happening. She and her brother Huckleberry and her cousin Jumper have survived the initial sweep of the disease that is ravaging the earth, gotten vaccinated only to continue on the run from cannibalistic humans they call hyenas. Kella keeps a running log book as they go, of her thoughts and feelings.
Jumper and Kella have been tasked by her uncle to deliver vital information to the CDC in regards to the pandemic. They must hike the Appalachian Trail, avoid the hyenas and avoid other groups who may or may not try to take the few supplies they have. Along the way they do find people who are willing to help.
This book had so many ups and downs, twists and turns. You will not be disappointed for a second! Bring on book 2.
