The Prisoner of the Dead: Zombie Thriller Dystopia (Dead World Book 1)The Prisoner of the Dead: Zombie Thriller Dystopia by Megan Mackie
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is about a dystopian sci-fi story.

When civilization crumbled millennia ago, it appeared that mankind was doomed but then the undead somehow came back to life. The plague arose, again and again, the zombies flourished, and they were reborn. Into this horrifying apocalypse stepped Baron, a lone wolf who appeared out of nowhere on the last remains of humanity. Baron is imprisoned by an even stranger lady, the child of immortals who may have the secret to stopping the deadly cycle once and for all when his sharp survival instincts lead him to kill a strange man. But only if this odd duo can make it through the next epidemic.

I loved this story. I loved every page of it. Every chapter was exciting. This is my first book by this author. I can’t wait to read more from this author and to continue this series.

Dystopian adventure with a cliffhanger
This story draws you in, spins you around and leaves you hanging. Brilliant writing and world building. Zombie virus with a twist and an unlikely MC in Baron. He is a very complex character with a mysterious background and who is thrust into a viscous cycle of survival with immortals. I really enjoyed this book. Interested in seeing where this series goes.

This is an interesting take on a zombie apocalypse! I’m all for dystopian reads! I was not a fan of Thalia in the beginning but she does grow on you. Baron has a good heart and you just want to help him as much as possible. When they have to work together things get tense and interesting. Be prepared about halfway through the story you will want to keep reading as things really start to pick up. Definitely looking forward to book 2!

The Prisoner of the Dead: Zombie Thriller Dystopia (Dead World Book 1)The Prisoner of the Dead: Zombie Thriller Dystopia by Megan Mackie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Baron, a wildman who is used to a fight or flight life, enters a town one day because his bike needed repairs. While in town, he notices a zombie and his survival instincts kick in. In doing so it triggers a domino effect and a strange man steps in to fight with Baron. Baron ends up killing the man whose name was Mickey.

Once Baron comes to, he realizes that he is being held prisoner by the woman that was with the man he had murdered. The town fell with very few survivors from the zombie plague. Turns out the woman, named Thalia, was an immortal immune to the zombie plague. She was part of a group called the ARK that was basically like a zombie resistance group. Mickey had been her protector and Baron was now to take up the role.

Baron used to being a loner has a hard time trusting Thalia meanwhile she doesn’t trust the murderer. Thalia is stubborn and gets into a lot of trouble bringing Baron down with her.

This book was really interesting to read. The author took the classic zombie apocalypse genre and gave it their own unique spin of things. I could not put it down. I loved the characters and watching them grow into their own. I can’t wait to read the next instalment!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have read this author before and could not wait to see what she has brought us with a new series. I was not disappointed. This is a dystopian zombie book unlike any I have read before. The zombies themselves are different. I won’t say any more other than there is much more to them. But what really makes this book are the characters. Baron is wonderful as a main character. He is not someone you would normally think of as a main character, but he pulls it off wonderfully. Then there is Thailia. She is complicated. You’re not sure if you like her or not, but you understand. It is interesting to learn more and more about her as the book goes on.

This is all set in a world of survival in a time when everything as we know it has collapsed. They are making the best of it as they can, while some really are striving to make the world a better place for the future. Question is, are they doing it the right way?

What would you do if you woke up one day and the undead had come to life? That’s right folks, ZOMBIES!

This incredible book follows Baron as he tries to survive this new world without dying or becoming part of the undead. From the beginning, he finds himself in one heck of a predicament. While driving through a small little town, he notices a beautiful woman as he searches for a repair shop for his bike. He soon learns that this woman is part of a small traveling caravan of scientists. She wears a thick gold collar around her neck which means she is an Atheling and is immortal. One of the locals helps Baron understand what this really means. For starters, she cannot die, yet she keeps a silver collared man, known as a Gin close by to help protect her should she ever need the extra help. Soon Baron finds himself in the middle of a town brawl and unfortunately he inadvertently kills this woman’s Gin. As penance, the Atheling captures and imprisons Baron immediately after the fight, forcing him to don a silver collar and become her new Gin. She expects him to immediately abide by her wishes while helping her and her team live through another day. Can they save the world from the infestation of zombies and stay on track with the ARK’s beliefs and overall goals?

I really enjoyed how the author put her fresh and unique spin on the zombie apocalypse virus story. It keeps you intrigued from start to finish.

I found the book to be very well written which allowed this to be a quick paced read that I thoroughly enjoyed. This book was entertaining and filled with a lot of twists and turns. I loved the characters, the world the author created and a plot that could easily become a huge success.

I’m curious to see what the author has in store for the Ark and this storyline in the near future.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

A Fulfilling five-star read. This is number one in the Dead world book series, and I am so excited to hear more from the world. The world building is great, and so much deeper and more complex than you expect from a zombie story, there was a true storyline as well and I am so excited to see where this great author will take us next. Baron will keep you hooked, he and the other characters all tell you a sublime story. There is action and drama a plenty in this story, each page just adds to the drama and hooks you harder. I cant wait for the rest of the series.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An enjoyable and engaging dystopian, sci-fi, story which kept me hooked from start to finish. The novel is set in an apocalyptic world filled with zombies, following a devastating plague, and where civilisation and humanity ended years ago. However, some have managed to survive and adapt to this new world, and one of those is skilled survivalist and wild man Baron. When his instincts lead him to killing a strange man, Baron finds himself imprisoned by a stranger women, Thalia. Thalia is a child of immortals, and she may hold the answers to ending the vicious cycle, as long as they can work together and survive the next outbreak. The setting and characters are brought vividly to life by the descriptive narrative, which made me feel immersed in the storyline. The characters are all intriguing in their own right, and Baron and Thalia are particularly great characters and I like the dynamic between them. This is not my usual genre, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it, and I look forward to book two.

The Prisoner of the Dead is the first book in the Dead World series by the ever talented Megan Mackie. I never bother reading the blurb to any of Ms. Mackie‘s books before rushing to one-click myself a copy, because I already know that whatever it is I will LOVE it. And this book was no exception- hello zombie apocalypse among dystopian themes- with action, thrills, mystery, dramatic developments, immortals, fantastic worldbuilding, survival, plague outbreak, zombies vs humans, and so much more I can’t possibly list it all here without spoiling the story for you.
As expected from Ms. Mackie she didn’t just write another ‘zombie’ story- she has cleverly given the zombie apocalypse trope a good shake up by adding her own original spin to it- and thereby breathing fresh ‘life’ into the genre (pun intended 😊). I shouldn’t be surprised- but she really does amaze me each and every time she releases a new story- as she always manages to weave in the unexpected, keeping me glued to the pages full of anticipation at what is or might happen.
A completely engrossing start to an exciting new series…. I really can’t wait to see where we go from here!
Highly recommended!
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Megan Mackie!

An apocolypse caused by a virus, pockets of virus and zombie outbreaks, a hero and heroine, outrageously beautiful world building, and characters you can’t wait to explore more and follow make for such a good book!

Baron is a lonely man – simple man on the surface, but his complexities keep him alive in an apocolyptic world where he just wants to find more people. In village after village, he finds destruction and death, or zombies he is trying to flee. He ends up following his instincts after meeting a man and killing him – and then he meets Talia. Is she the answer to ending the virus? The dynamic between them is wonderful and kept me from putting the book down. I can’t wait to learn more about them in the rest of the series!

Okay! I now have a new favorite series. First off it’s not a usual end of the world book. These zombies are different. The world is different. Learning about the “Dogs” past was magnificent. Seeing the world through each of the main character’s eyes was even better. I’m on the fence with the ARKS beliefs and system. Furthermore if The ENDING WAS SO FRUSTRATING BUT IN A GOOD WAY! All I can say is that Thalia is a lot like her father. And I feel for Baron. I cannot not wait for the next installment. Just when I think a romance is brewing here comes life (the author) taking it away. Propter hominus I guess.

I love reading dystopian/apocalyptic stories, especially if it involves zombies! Despite this love, a lot of zombie books/movies/shows are quite similar. What I liked about this book was that the author included a few unique twists that made it unlike other zombie books that I have read recently. One of the main characters, Baron, has a fascinating role in the background of the story and as things are revealed about his life, it builds suspense and clues about the virus that is creating havoc in the world. Throw in some immortals, magic, and action to create this interesting world that I had difficulty putting down once I started.

Now, I am not into books about zombies but I do love dystopian novels so figured I would give this one a try. The author does a fantastic job building this dystopian world that makes you feel as though you are a part of it. The characters are intricate, mysterious and sometimes annoying just like the people we meet in everyday life.

We start out meeting Baron who seems to be from nowhere but is a survivalist in the midst of a viral outbreak that not only kills its host but brings them back to life as the undead. When he needs a fix on his bike he rolls into this seemingly idyllic town that is not like anywhere he has been. First off, this town has no zombies that he can see and the people are interacting, happy in their everyday lives. While his bike is getting fixed he meets an undead and is ceremoniously attacked by the townspeople where he ends up killing a man. This man happens to be attached to a very attractive female who is immortal and now Baron finds himself at her mercy having to take the place of her companion and protector. This starts a whirlwind adventure for Baron as he works with Talia to find an end to this viral outbreak as well as learn more about his past. However, this virus seems to erupt in cycles and with so many trials the duo must survive before they can figure out how Talia might be the cure to what is infecting the human race. This book was full of twists, turns, and action that makes you fall in love with the characters while also despising their flaws. I will definitely keep my eye out for any upcoming books in this series and read through them to see what comes next!

A good zombie post-apocalyptic novel with lots of action and fighting. Baron, our hero, is hard to get to know and has a serious lack of social skills and graces. When he is thrust into the hands of the Athelings as their unfortunate prisoner, he’s going to need to learn to communicate and work as a team in short order, if all of them hope to get out alive. The supernatural elements worked well, and were skillfully written. I liked that the book moved at a fast clip, with lots of interesting plot points. A good read for sci-fi and zombie lovers.

This is not my first book by this author but it is one of my favorites by her yet. This is the first book in this series and what a start it is. I can’t wait to see what this author has for us next in this series. I enjoyed being pulled into the story by the creative, unique characters. The author’s use of details made the characters not only pop but also made them come to life on each page. This is a faster paced story that has twists and turns that kept me turning pages fast. A story that is full of action plus a man from no place kills, and an immortal child that could be the key to the whole thing. Megan gives us an interesting apocalyptic dystopian world tale where the characters are in the midst of a virus outbreak causing zombies to run rampant. They are in a never-ending cycle that just keeps on going as the virus keeps on returning and along with it the undead keep rising.
Baron is a survivalist and has been through hell and back and he is no stranger to killing. When he finds an immortal, she may just be the key to ending it all.
Overall, the book was entertaining, and Megan’s world building is interesting. There is lots of action, thrills and mayhem and surprises.

This book was a sweet change from your usual end-of-the-world zombie tales. Baron is just trying to survive a zombie apocalypse and finds himself prisoner to Thalia. Once you start you just can’t put it down. Baron is just trying to lay low but once he finds trouble all hell breaks loose. The characters are fantastic. Baron is rebellious, yet he’s just trying to survive. Thalia is a bit badass, yet just trying to save her people. The supporting characters cracked me up. They just all meshed together. The plot all came together. I found it to be refreshing. As I said, a nice change from the usual zombie plots, thank you! I would give more than a 5 if I could. Now, from one reader to the other, get out there and buy this book. You’ll love it.
