Well this was an unexpected and emotional story. I went into this book expecting a fun and entertaining story (which we got) but I didn’t expect to be emotionally invested in the characters, specifically Liz, and her journey. I thought thr author navigated you through it brilliantly and it made me connect with the book even more. This is still a pretty new author to me but stories like this definitely make me want to read more. This was well written and fun and I enjoyed going along for the ride.

This book was a quick read for me. It was hard for me to stay connected with to it. I had a hard time connecting to the characters. I thought some of the plot topics were good. I would read more by this author.

Well this is part of a series, and in my search for something new as well as a new author I missed the series part. But it all worked out well as this story can be a standalone. However I found there is so much more to this series. Gabby is strong and independent with many secrets. Her father wants her in the governor’s office and married to the next governor of Texas. Richard Wright is her boyfriend and while he is on the road to becoming said governor, there are a few things the citizens of Texas do not know. But that for you to discover as you read this story. In my opinion the story is well written and easy to follow. The characters are not only believable but loveable as well. I enjoyed this page turner and often found myself behind on things I needed to do, like sleep. So worth staying up all night. Many avenues are touched in this story, and you find yourself wanting more. More you will find in the books before this one. As for me I am headed back to the beginning where this series started. The characters in this book are likely all people that people can imagine from within their own lives. You get a glimpse of what they all think of one another as well as why they are the way they are. Mostly widows or dealing with major changes in their lives in other ways.
As they do in real life, the questions and complaints arising around them are colored by their own experiences, and otherwise minor incidents are causing a lot of discontent in Oaken Hills.
I really expected something totally different and more suspenseful, but it was a short, interesting read even though the murder had taken place far in the past. Good description and world building, each character has a bit of their own arc and there is a bit of new relationship before all is said and done. Fun, quick read.

Murder in a Gated Community by Laura Koerber was hilarious. As a caregiver, I can feel a connection to how these elderly characters react to one another and I have experienced similar encounters (without violence) in my day-to-day life. This book had me intrigued right from the opening paragraph, I couldn’t wait to read about the outcome between these fantastic characters. They all just had the best dynamics, I didn’t want the short novel to end. The environment is so realistic, I felt attached to these characters like my own clients whom I have the privilege to care for on a regular basis. The stories I got to follow along with in this tale, were just so heartwarming, and the hilarity of how such small acts can cause such dramatic reactions, was one of my favorite parts. I look forward to reading more of Laura Koerber’s works because this was such a refreshing, enjoyment for me to read. @Brandy Rymer 08/2023

I do not consider myself a person who cries easily or who cries over fiction. But let me tell you, this book had me in tears from the beginning. I don’t know if it is the combination of wonderful writing and missing my momma or what but WOW. This book definitely had me pulled in from the start. I LOVE that Liz’s grandmother had a sordid past and what a past it was. Liz is definitely selfish and wants everything to revolve around her and this time things aren’t about her, she is fulfilling the wishes of her deceased grandmother and yes Liz is a bit of a brat about it at times. I love that her Bestie and new Boyfriend have put her in her place a time or two. I really enjoyed this book and read it from start to finish in one sitting.

This is an interesting story full of peculiar characters and their lives. Each of the characters has a story to tell. As we see the way their lives intertwine, we also get to see the problems with the HOA of the community. From garden spots to barking dogs this story has many things that will grab your attention. I enjoyed seeing the characters interact and all the problems with the HOA. It was fun to see the different personalities and how they deal with all that goes on in the community. I enjoyed getting to meet the characters living in this community and getting a glimpse into their lives.

When Liz’s grandmother dies, Liz sets off to spread her ashes at the Florida home. Along the way, Liz learns about another side of her grandmother through the tenet at the house. Liz also learns about herself. Opinion This book took me on an emotional roller coaster. My father in law recently died and it certainly brought back some amount of grief. I really was consumed by this book, more so than I have been in any book recently. With shorter chapters, the book seemed to fly by (even though it was quite long.) I did not want to put the book down for any of the mundane tasks like taking the kid to his XC practice. I was fortunate to have read this book while on vacation and fear that if I would have read it while working that I would have gone to work quite tired. The romance was cute. At first, I was a bit creeped out by how much he knew her but by the end it was endearing.

Liz’s Road Trip is a sweet romance that deals with love, grief, learning about the past, and friendship. Liz has lost her grandmother and learns she did not know as much as she once thought she knew about her. Liz travels to her grandmother’s home and meets Mark. He has been writing her grandmother’s story and fills Liz in on the past she didn’t know about. The story has lots of emotions while at the same time being relatable. I enjoyed the characters and story. Also, I enjoyed the relationship that builds between Liz and Mark. Liz has a lot that she has to deal with emotionally while also taking in all the changes her life is experiencing. This is a great story if you need an emotional but heartwarming read. I look forward to reading more by this author soon.

I’m always excited when this author has a new book out, and I was definitely not disappointed by this latest novel. The storyline focuses on Liz Evans who has set out on a cross-country road trip, along with her grandmother’s cat, to carry out the final wishes of her grandmother. Along the way Liz learns that the grandmother that she knew, who was always collecting coupons was actually a very wealthy women, and a Hollywood icon who had many international lovers. Having been raised by Betsy, Liz is shocked by her discoveries, and even more so when she meets biographer, Mark Watts, who is living in her grandmother’s Palm Beach home, which she also knew nothing about. Mark is then able to tell Liz about her grandmother’s past, becoming a confidant in the process. As their friendship turns into something more and their relationship develops, the Liz who likes her solitude realises that she might just need a house in Palm Beach, a man and her grandmother’s crazy cat to be happy! I thoroughly enjoyed this heartwarming romance which had me hooked from page one. I loved the characters and the chemistry between Liz and Mark really came across in the narrative. An enjoyable and engaging read.

Drama. My oh my where to begin. I love mystery and suspense books and this book seemed to fit into that, but it was so much more. This is the first book I have read by Laura Koerber, and I will certainly be looking into more of her work after this little treat. While this book wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be it was a fun little read for a rainy Sunday. Told from several perspectives of the Oaken Acres community we get a well-rounded look at life in the quiet little gated retirement community in Washington state. Instantly I was drawn not only to Jane and Leslie but in some ways truly felt an understanding towards Hazel. Yes, I know things are tense where Hazel is concerned especially when it comes to the garden that she found. That said also have an understanding to how Theresa feels, though I initially strongly disliked her when first starting the book. So many interesting characters and so many different stories and substories that make it easy to envision and feel like you’re there with a bag of popcorn watching the chaos play out. Will Hazel be able to keep her garden plot and the secrets it hides? Can Jane succeed in helping Andrea’s dog not be so lonely? While the world the author places her story is fiction it is reality all over the world. The “gated communities” look appealing, but they are no different than any other neighborhood. With drama, arguing, vengeful dreams played out in our heads, and broken hearts over lonely pets locked alone in garages for days. Not only could I picture this community existing in my own small mountain town, but I could see the characters’ traits in my neighbors. If you like a little mystery, some suspense, a lot of drama and some humor sprinkled in while watching friendships form to get through the pains of being alone this is the book for you. Now I’m off to take a stroll through the rest of this talented author’s work.

I thought the book was going to be a Cozy Mystery, it’s not, you find out who the murderer is instantly. That’s not a bad thing, I really enjoyed the book. I wish things with Hazel would have ended differently, I feel it would have been funny if she was taken to jail. Anyone in a nosey HOA would have loved seeing that. At first I didn’t care for Jane and Leslie but I’m glad to see their friendship, along with Andrea, grow.

Murder in a Gated Community was alright but not great. There were a lot of characters and I didn’t get invested in any of them. I was hoping for a bit more suspense, but instead felt it was just a bunch of busybodies… The murder was not very exciting to me, and I felt like there should have been more depth into Hazel. Or really any of the characters. I didn’t feel they were very developed or complex enough to make me care about any of them. The writing style was very unique. With the meeting notes and letters to the board. Unlike anything I’ve read.

While a fairly short, quick novella, Murder in a Gated Community is quite entertaining. The title, however, is slightly misleading. Many of the residents in the gated community of Oaken Acres are older, retired individuals. The community is quiet, less than kid friendly, and filled with nosey neighbors. While ideal for some, I found the idea of being so close to neighbors a little unpleasant. The HOA has lots of rules and regulations to follow as well. It seems as if many of the community members have no problems following these rules and regulations. But, just as in life, there is always a few willing to stretch and bend the rules. Overall, Laura Koerber delivers oddly realistic, believable characters and the differing points of view along the way make this story one of a kind!

I didn’t really know what to expect from this fairly short novella, as the blurb was a little vague, however I was hooked from page one. I thought it was going to be a typical cozy mystery, but the fairly lighthearted storyline about the residents of an upscale gated community, Oaken Acres, has a quirky and unique plot. The characters are all well defined and I felt like I knew them all by the end of the story, the majority of the narrative is centred on the community garden and it’s politics. The descriptive narrative brought both the setting of Oaken Acres and its residents vividly to life, and I felt immersed in their world, of dog barking, gardening plot disputes, drones and golfers. This darkly funny story definitely kept me turning the pages, the meetings from the BOD meetings in particular providing some laugh out loud moments. The list of characters at the beginning was very useful, and I enjoyed the authors writing style, whilst the unpredictable plot kept me guessing as to the outcome of the story. A quick read which had me captivated throughout.

I liked the concept of the road trip to discovery behind the book, especially as the discovery wasn’t just limited to Liz. I loved the way we learnt more about Liz’s grandmother as the story progressed, it added a more engaging element to the mystery surrounding her.
I liked the characters (Mark especially), they were well-written and relatable. Liz was another good character; she was understandably going through a difficult time and was dealing with it as best she could despite all the secrets that were gradually coming to light. There were times she was a little frustrating, but this was a minor issue compared to the rest of the book.
This was an entertaining and at times surprising read, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

First off, let me say that I have never read a Bernadette Marie book and not love it. However, this one exceeded each and every one of my expectations. Liz Evans is quite possibly the best character she has written so far and I just loved the plot of this one. I love that Liz is challenged to live a life with no regrets. I love the whole premise of this book. I love that her grandmother had a whole secret life that she didn’t know about. This is just such a wonderful story. I cannot recommend reading this book enough. Heck, I cannot recommend reading any of Bernadette Marie’s Books enough! But this is the one that I would not miss! It is so well written with such endearing characters!

This book was one that I just simply could not put down! From the note from the author on the first page I knew this would be an extremely entertaining book. There were silly moments and moments that made me upset in this book and the author took the time to be able to produce a book in this manner! LIz’s Road Trip was a fun, unpredictable, and thought-provoking read. Having just lost my grandparents in the past two years, it was a refreshing and cathartic read for me. I connected with the main character, LIz, and laughed along with her along the way, because even when life gets you down, laughter can be the best medicine.
I really appreciated the depthness of the characters and the characters aren’t static but grow from the beginning to end. The story between Mark and Liz grows and unfolds slowly, but liked the format of the book (made it more mysterious) and Liz tries to discover another side of her grandma she never knew.

I’ll start off by saying that I was not aware that this was a book deep in a series when I picked it up. This can be read as a stand alone but for me, I’m going to go back and read the previous books to understand more of the back story.
This book is full of emotion…some that came to me a bit unexpected. There is also, as with any book with a political figure, lots of lies, secrets, grief and more. I appreciated that this was a clean romance novel with a sweet story of two people who are broken and needing each other.
I look forward to reading the previous books in this series and “catching up” on the characters!

Love, Only Better is the first book in the Bold Journeys Series. It is a beautifully written story of one woman’s journey to self-discovery and sexual empowerment. The story centers around the character of Rebecca who has just been dumped by her boyfriend. He refers to her as an “ice queen” and this is his reason for breaking up with her. Rebecca is devastated but saw the breakup coming. Her roommate is less than helpful and tells her it is for the best because she never liked him anyways. Rebecca has nobody to talk to about her “sexual problem” because the subject is taboo. Rebecca feels as though she cannot do anything right and as though her world is falling apart around her, so she decides to go on a journey to become a better person. This journey is a bit different than the typical eating healthier, going to the gym, working out, becoming a better person journey that most women would go through after a bad breakup. Rebecca decides to try to discuss the matter with her doctor and ultimately ends up becoming part of a research study. Through the study she learns a lot about herself, her sexuality, and gains self-confidence. Enough confidence that she decides to go after what she wants, one of which is the yummy relative of one of her neighbors. Through Rebecca’s journey she runs into some snags, hits some bumps in the road, but overall learns to be confident, strong, brave, and empowered. As her confidence and sexual empowerment improve Rebecca learns how sex and love combine to have a healthy, happy, vibrant relationship. Huge kudos to the author for her bravery in discussing the taboo subject of women’s sexuality. Looking forward to reading the next book in this series!

Liz’s Road Trip is a beautifully written, wholesome, feel-good story about one woman’s journey after the loss of a loved one. The story centers around the character of Liz who has just lost her grandmother to cancer. When Liz goes through her grandmother’s phone, she discovers contact information for individuals she does not know. Information for financial advisors and messages from guys calling her grandmother “doll” peek Liz’s interest and has Liz questioning who her grandmother was. When one of her grandmother’s contacts calls persistently Liz finally answer. She is shocked to discover this stranger named Mark knows who she is and seems to have a lot of personal information on her. Then he drops the bomb that he is living in her grandmother’s house in Florida. This cannot be true, and this guy must be pulling a scam because her grandma did not own a home in Florida. As Mark and Liz talk it is discovered that Mark is a biographer who is writing about her grandma’s glamourous past as a Hollywood star who had a zest for life. Liz is surprised to learn about her grandma’s past and her secret life. Liz only knows her grandma as the sweet, loving person she grew up with. With her curiosity piqued Liz sets off on a road trip with her grandma’s cat to fulfill her grandma’s final wishes and to hopefully get answers. Through her journey Liz makes discoveries about herself, makes a friend in Mark, gains a confidante, and learns to live and love life. This was a heartfelt and uplifting story of Liz’s journey as she navigated through grief and loss of her grandma by learning more about her grandma’s past. I highly recommend this book!

Liz’s Road Trip by Bernadette Marie is a fun, sweet, and touching contemporary romance with just enough drama to make things interesting. Meet Rebeca, a Jewishlatin woman full of intelligence and dreams. Oh but her only but great defect is to not have confidence in herself. Not at work and less with her partners. Her romantic affairs had had a negative in her steem and looking back at each experience makes her realize that maybe she needs help getting her head in place.
Just when she begins her journey to self discovery a cute and easy going guy gets in the picture. Kyle moved across the hall in order to be with his aunt, she is older and the company helps her. Both try to understand each other and the needs that come from the development of a relationship, oh but sometimes trouble will make this harder.
This story is full of self awareness and is a way to understand the place most of us live a daily battle, our heads, what they may need and how to address their issues.

I would have to say Liz’s Road Trip was one of the best books I have read this year. Liz stole my heart in this novel. Being raised by my grandma, I could relate to her in so many ways. I couldn’t imagine how she felt learning all the secrets her gram’s held onto all of those years. The characters in this novel were lovable, relatable, and down to earth. And Cosmo, well who wouldn’t have a soft spot for Cosmo. Bernadette Marie whisked me away on this one from the very beginning. I was able to read it in two days, picking it up to read every opportunity I had. This novel was moderately paced and kept me wanting more the entire time. The descriptive scenes had me feeling as if I was on this road trip of a journey right alongside Liz. This was my first time reading a novel written by Bernadette Marie and I will not hesitate in the future to pick up another. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a quick pick me up type of read, you won’t regret the decision to do so.

This was such a fun book, not something you would necessarily expect from the title, but I greatly enjoyed it. I thought the author did a great job of creating multi-dimensional characters and the very deliberate way she brought them all together was fantastic. Clearly Barney the dog was hands down my favorite character, but I loved the friendship that blossomed between the characters. She did a great job of building the suspense about the murder and how it happened. I loved the interludes that had the HOA notes and correspondence as it really helped paint a picture of the HOA and the member in it. It was a very amusing book with a lot of heart in it. I absolutely recommend people give it a whirl!

Liz’s Road Trip by Bernadette Marie is a delightful contemporary romance story. One quirky young woman. One cat. Secrets from the past. A road trip. A romance. The characters are engaging and well developed with flaws and with their own distinct personalities. Whilst Liz did annoy me a few times I did enjoy the story. This story has everything that makes it a sweet read that is full of grief and sorrow, passion and some humour, hope and love, steam and some wit. This story is also full of secrets and fears, reflection and healing. This compelling story is full of twists, turns and a few loops. It is so easy to get lost in this tale and before you know it you have come to the end. It is also told in dual POV which is my favourite way to tell a story. Liz’s Road Trip reveals secrets of a woman simply known as Grandma to her. It appears there was a lot more to Grandma than she ever knew. A life that she never knew about. Revealing her grandma’s past is helped along by a stranger. As she peels back the layers of her grandma’s life, she learns how to truly live. As always, I look forward to more from Bernadette.
