My rating: 5 of 5 stars

So to start real quick: I haven’t read a YA novel in quite sometime but DAMN YALL. This was a GOOD one and made me remember why I LOVE YA novels. Kella is an awesome character that shows a lot of layers to herself (instead of being a “typical teenager”). She’s protective of Huck (let’s be honest- he’s my favorite), brave, and honestly hilarious. I can definitely see people becoming very immersed (and maybe a little frightened) with this book because of the pandemic we are all in! I just really enjoyed it and was really surprised to learn that there are books previous to this one. (Because I didn’t feel lost or anything!) but I’m happy that there are previous ones because now I have more to read while I wait for the sequel! I love apocalyptic stories and this was a great one- check it out y’all!

What a story to read in the current climate. A book like this has never quite hit so close to home and I have to say it made for a much more interesting read. This book is aimed at the YA audience but the author has done a fantastic job of creating a story that resonates with all ages. I had no trouble at all connecting with the story and the characters. I really became invested in their story. This is the kind of book that you have to read in one sitting because you umhuatbhave to know what happens. I thought this was well written and so exciting to read. I would highly recommend this book.

Decisions and Possibilities (Notebook Mysteries #2)Decisions and Possibilities by Kimberly Mullins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Somehow I started on book two so I will need to go back and read the first to learn more about Emma and some of the events that are talked about throughout book two! Even not reading the first book, I have been able to easily follow the story and the characters. Emma is a teen detective who graduated from business school and has been working with local companies to find women jobs. She also solves crimes that arise and that are brought to her. I love Emma and the group of friends and family that she is surrounded by. I liked the idea of growing up in a boarding house and like getting to know the characters that were part of the day to day. The crimes don’t seem ridiculous for a teen and even though some are dangerous, Emma always walks though the steps so she knows how to get to the bottom of them. The story is set in the 1800’s, but it doesn’t feel out of date even though Emma rides her bike everywhere which is also a fun element. What I loved most about the book was how the author portrayed this young girl as so strong, independent, and capable of anything she put her mind to – a great way to show a strong young woman protagonist!

I absolutely loved this book! From the moment that I read the synopsis, I knew that I had to read this. A post-apocalyptic story that fits too well into our covid-ridden world. There were many similarities between the people and events in this book to our current pandemic — other than the hyenas/zombies attacking the main characters! I really enjoyed the characters and hope to read more about Kella, Huck, Jumper, and Finch in the next book!

Simply Amazing. This book is a fantastic read about the possible end of the world. It is not the run of the mill apocalypse story with Hollywood zombies. It is a fresh view on how a sudden pandemic can turn humans into “zombies” or as the book calls them “Hyenas”, which are mutated humans with lethal bite as opposed to rotting walking dead bodies. Kella along with her little brother Huck and cousin Jumper are carrying vital CDC information along the Appalachian trail. Technology is down leaving them to travel the journey to hopefully save the world. Through the story you get a sense of each character and their relationship with the other characters. They are relatable and so easy to connect with that you don’t want to put the book down. I for sure did not want to stop reading once I started this book. I cannot wait to continue on reading this series.

This book was amazing. Kella was super relatable. So, was her relationship with Huck because we all strive to love our siblings and try to keep them safe. This book was so well written for the style of book that it is. I have never been into books about apocalypses, but this one seemed super interesting and I fell in love with it after the first page. I couldn’t put it down.

This book was phenomenal! Kella and Huck have such an amazing sibling relationship, and tying that in with their relationship with Jumper is truly heartwarming, the way they take care of each other. All of the references to Lord of the Rings also kept me smiling, with the way they communicated with each other building relationships in the midst of the turmoil the was the ETM. I cant wait to see how Gazer, Huck, and Kella band together to get out of this new conflict. Honestly, the way this story was written was truly a masterpiece and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

Apocalypse Thoughts (The Pox Series Book 5) by Kendra Griffin – Review by Allyson Ware

I absolutely LOVE dystopian novels. They are probably my favorite type of book. When I got my hands on this one, I could not put it down. This novel goes above and beyond the typical dystopian world. Considering everything we, as society, have been through during the pandemic, it is highly relatable. Which, if you think about it, is incredibly scary to think about.

These characters are very easy to love. Each one found a place in my heart instantly. Everyone except Slingshot. You will find out soon enough why I cannot place her in the same category as the others. The storyline and characters are addicting, just like watching your favorite TV show. I guarantee you will be fascinated by this, just as I was.

Apocalypse Thoughts: A Story for the Possible End Times (The Pox Series) by Kendra Griffin is a cleverly woven young adult dystopian post-apocalyptic fun adventure story. This has so much going on in it- but in a great way. From action, danger, and endeavouring to survive a world-ending pandemic, to self-discovery, humour, and facing the odds- this story swept me up and had me engrossed right from the beginning.
Kella is a great character- she may only be seventeen- but she has the presence of someone much older. She was really easy to like, and I quickly became invested in her and the outcome of the story.
I didn’t realise coming into this book that it is the fifth book in the series, but thankfully I never felt lost, or like I was missing anything vitally important by not having read the previous books first. But having said that, my curiosity has definitely been sparked and I will absolutely be going back to explore the other instalments asap- I’m excited by what I might find there.
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Kendra Griffin!

This is the first book in this series and a first story written by this author for me. I was quite surprised by how enjoyable I found it to be. I especially found it relatable reading certain parts since we have been living in a world surviving COVID. Considering this is a “story for the possible end times” I had some feelings of déjà vu. I think that the author did a wonderful job describing this dystopian environment. The characters are so relatable and lovable. Even the adversaries in this book had me rooting them on. And that’s not something I do quite often. I read this book in a day because I didn’t want to put it down. Seriously, I was biting my nails during certain scenes and chapters. I highly recommend this book not just for young adults but for adults to read as well. Please pick up this book. It may save your life one day.

I liked this novel. I enjoy post apocalyptic novels and zombie novels so this novel checked both of these marks. I like these kind of novels because they offer a look at how quickly civilization and people fall apart when something catastrophic happens. The author created a really interesting story and I couldn’t stop reading it until the end. The author introduced a bit of a curve ball at the end and I cannot wait to see where this curve goes in the next book.

This is a great adventure story for young adults. The author does an amazing job of describe the world that is now taken over by a virus that is turning humans into cannibals.
Now she is on a trail with special data about the virus which they need to deliver. With some other survivers she starts her journey away from danger, however danger is always on step behind them.

Our main character Kella is a young girl going into womanhood so as well as dealing with the end of the world she also has to deal with self doubt and worries that come from maturing into a woman. Kella’s character is relatable for most young women who at one time or another will have experienced the same feelings.
This is a great young adult adventure which will keep a reader hooked from the first page. You are taken on an adventure where Kella doesn’t know who she can trust or what she needs to do. All she knows is she needs to get the information she has to CDC however will the cost of this mean risking her life? Will she be able to protect her brother? Or will they both get sick of their bossy cousin who is trying to rule them?

Loved this book! This read is for young and old and totally up my dystopian alley. With everything going on right now in real life with COVID, this story reminds me of our current times. My favorite character is Huck with being a bookworm like myself. I also loved how strong Kella was and protective to make sure her brother, Huck, stays safe and also along for the ride is her cousin Jumper while trying to outrun the “hyenas”. This book is truly a fun read and I highly recommend!

Wow! This book was great! It drew so many parallels to the time we are living in right now. It scared me to think that this could be a possible future we could be looking at. Kalla is a 17, just about to turn 18 year old girl who is trapped in a nightmare. The Apocalypse is happening. She and her brother Huckleberry and her cousin Jumper have survived the initial sweep of the disease that is ravaging the earth, gotten vaccinated only to continue on the run from cannibalistic humans they call hyenas. Kella keeps a running log book as they go, of her thoughts and feelings.

Jumper and Kella have been tasked by her uncle to deliver vital information to the CDC in regards to the pandemic. They must hike the Appalachian Trail, avoid the hyenas and avoid other groups who may or may not try to take the few supplies they have. Along the way they do find people who are willing to help.

This book had so many ups and downs, twists and turns. You will not be disappointed for a second! Bring on book 2.

A world altering five-star read. This is my first by this author and the first in the Pox series, but I am excited for more. This is a young adult, but Kella is so much more mature than I expected her to be, her attitude to the world falling apart is great. The whole story is so much more than you expect, it really made me stop and think, I had started it in the evening and had to stop as I needed sleep, then I had to work, and all day at work I was thinking of this story. What was going to happen next, and what was really going on. I really loved this story and it makes you realise just how bad it could get, and makes every day a little easier.

s a YA book, I found this to be fascinating! For an end of times, virus ridden world, full of hyenas; it grabbed my emotions, caught my attention, and I fell for Huck. Huck had to be my favorite character. Now, I’m a grandmother but I have a son and grandson unique like Huck. I found his personality so very relatable. I’m a bookworm too. We could be going for a walk. Oh, a break, I’ll read.lol. The book has such a realistic view, not sappy like some other books. It was worth reading. Whether you are 16 or 56, you ought give this a shot, especially with today’s world. It’s kind of refreshing. Hey, their world is out of coffee. *shudder* I would give it more than a 5 star if I could. LOVED IT.

An endearing YA novel about the End of Times (Maybe) and finding love and humour along the way. Kella is stuck trying to outrun the “hyenas” with her anxious cousin Jumper and her little brother Huck, who has autism. Trying to protect and defend Huck, and put up with Jumper’s over-enthusiastic rules has her worn out, let alone hiking miles per day with the threat of cannibals attacking 24/7. Her sardonic wit and familial loyalty make her a loveable character to follow through the ETM. A captivating plot, plus colourful characters met along the way, make this a fun read.

This book made a impact on what my thoughts are on the world what it is right now, what it was, and certainly what it could be. This book is one we all need to read, where ever we are in life, it really brings on something so enlightening, it really hits your soul, hard. It’s one I shall defiantly be reflecting on.

This book really brought on realization of life with how things are now with Covid times and such. We can not take thing for granted. Clean Water? Food sources from our grocery stores? What if that was all gone and we had to use our own survival skills to just basically get by in this everchanging world.

I loved this book, it brought on the skills of our own humanity, the need and want to rely on one another. The creatures in the book I really identified with Covid and the dark times of the world. This book was full of suspense, and a thrill to get to survival. I read and constantly was wondering if Kella and her gang would make where they were heading towards. The book was full of characters, that you rooted for, darkness of the world and creatures, and a true impact to think about the world and things!

This is a must read for sure, and shall not be passed up. That is my recommendation to you. I found it literally an eye opener, and a joy and inspiration in itself to read. I really enjoyed it, and will be looking up this wonderful author of their other works! I highly recommend this book and enlightening author!

Kella is just trying to live to see another day – even if the day looks more like a horror movie than your typical teen’s life. On a mission to get data to the CDC is one thing, but hiking along the Appalachian Train is a whole other ball game in the end times. If being a teen wasn’t hard enough, Kella’s juggling being moderator in her group as well as trying to stay positive about their chances at reaching their destination while also avoiding ‘Hyenas’ – very dangerous, very sick, people who have a pension for homicide. I really loved reading this story because of the characters and Kella’s hilarious notes! When reading books about the apocalypse, you expect it to be dark and gloomy and full of horror, but this book had more of a comical feel that kept my attention and made the story so enjoyable!

Kella is a normal everyday girl who loves her family and will literally do anything for them. You get a realistic view into what it would be like in an apocalypse with all the dirty, stinky, dangerous, fearful and sometimes humorous moments. We watch as Kella grows as a person and learns surprising things about herself yet never gives up. I promise you will fall in love with her and the rest of the fellowship as they try and reach their destination. It’s a great read and I’m excited for the next book!

Obviously one starts a book with the hopes of it being a good read. Entertaining. A story to escape into, ya know? But then there are books like these that meet those expectations and then go above and beyond what you had hoped for. It’s been a while since I’ve picked up a YA book, and not often I stray from my comfort bubble of romance. But this book? Phenomenal. The adventure I just went on, the emotions and laughs. These characters were written brilliantly.  Kella was relatable and a character I wish I could know for real! 10/10 recommend this book.

Wow!! What a time to read a story like this one, one about trying to survive a pandemic, albeit ours doesn’t involve zombies (thank goodness). This obviously hit close to home as we are currently in the middle of our very own pandemic, and for that reason at times it felt hard to read because it was just so real and I could relate to Kella and her internal dialogue.

I love how this author managed to hook me in right from the beginning, the characters are super intriguing and relatable which was an added bonus. I also feel like she portrayed a young woman’s thoughts really well, plus all of the detail made it really easy to follow along and picture everything playing out in my mind.

This was my first book by this author but it won’t be my last, I look forward to reading more from this author asap!!

A YA dystopian tale about a pandemic like we are currently facing but add in a bit of the Walking Dead and the like. The story is told by our protagonist and has action and suspense, with a dash of sassiness, frustrations and is thought provoking. This action adventure tells the story of YA’s learning to navigate not only this strange new world but also becoming an adult whilst trying to meet their goal and hopefully help mankind. It is full of the pitfalls that YA face, like self-doubt, self-consciousness, etc. whilst trying to dodge cannibals and hyenas, add in some humour to lighten the load to this apocalyptic world.
I am sure YA’s will find this relatable and enjoy the adventure.

This is a young adult story that I enjoyed. This is a well written story where the author’s use of details brought the story to life on each page. It has characters that made the story fun and entertaining to read. I enjoyed how the characters are connectable and kept the story engaging. This is a faster paced story that is full of creatures and maybe even some romance. I enjoyed the growth of the plot as well as the growth of the characters throughout the story. With no cell phones and a mutation spreading, Kella is determined to protect what is hers. What happens with her and her journey, you will have to read this book to find out. This is not normally a book that I would read but I am happy that I picked it up. It is worth the read for sure. I highly recommend this book.

Apocalypse Thoughts (The Pox Series Book 5) by Kendra Griffin
Genre – Young Adult, Dystopian, Action-Adventure
Seventeen-year-old Kella O’Malley is living through the apocalypse.
Maybe.
She’s definitely running from feral cannibals.
When a pandemic begins mutating humans into killers during her spring break in Georgia, Kella joins with a group of teens and twenty-somethings to carry precious CDC data north on the Appalachian Trail. With no cell phones and no clue how far the mutation spreads, their only hope is to stay ahead of the “Hyenas” and hike faster than the world can end.
If Buffy the Vampire Slayer had to save the world without superpowers, it would look a lot like this. But even while suffering from epic caffeine withdrawal, Kella is determined to protect her younger brother, keep from being eaten alive, and maybe even fall in love before the world definitely ends.
“The end times are not what you were expecting,” Kella writes in the shelter logbook along the way. “Be prepared for a lot of stomach growling. And a serious lack of condiments.”
“Also, take note: Cities overrun by feral human cannibals do not make for great spring break destinations. But on the bright side, it’s very unlikely now that boredom is what will kill you.”
“Falling in love is terrifying. It ranks somewhere between murder hornets and being eaten alive by Hyenas.”
