How would you feel if you finally met someone to trust and to be your friend, who took up for you against all the bullies that picked on you for your clothes and lifestyle, only for them to disappear a couple of years later? This is what our main character, Mina, experiences when Wes, her best friend and protector, stops showing up to school. Years pass and a lot changes for both Mina and Wes. Mina finally feels like she has her life on track when, guess who shows up at her prestigious school?

Wesley and Mina both face a lot of ups and downs as they go through life and try to reconnect. I love the heartfelt connection between these two wonderfully written characters! They both grow tremendously as they experience both highs and lows, while always having each other’s backs. This is a wonderful YA tale that I’m so glad I picked up and I can’t wait to read more by these authors as they have an easy-flowing writing style that pulls me right into the story and the lives of the characters.

“‘You’re a unicorn,’ I breathed, as I took her face in my hands. ‘Rare and magnificient. And I’d set the world on fire just to get a taste of that magic.'”

Mina is tired of all the bullies. She can’t help her looks or her wardrobe, not to mention that she’s fortunate to have had a meal today. Life is rough in this small town where she is called all sorts of names. She’s never really had a friend until 5th grade and that’s when she met the “new kid” Wes.

He came in and sat down next to her. She tried to warn him away but he wasn’t having it. He was more into her than anyone else and she couldn’t understand it, even after he told her that he lived in New Haven.

Both kids dealt with their share of tragedy but they dealt with it together. That is, until the day that Wes just up and left with not so much as a goodbye. Mina was devastated and thought life would end for her. In a way, her life as she knew it did end and nothing would ever be the same again.

This is an angsty teenage romance novel of lost first loves. There are times it was a little much for this mom raising teenagers but overall I really did enjoy this story. The challenges that Mina and Wes are pretty real life for many people, at least the first part of life. My favorite part of this book is the mention of my current hometown. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a book that mentions it. The locations mentioned within are fictional but it was still pretty cool to see it mentioned.

What a sweet high school romance story! Sometimes we find the love of our life when we are young and then we lose them for a while. In this story we find Mina and Wes who reconnect after time has passed. Each has changed and gone through different things, but they never lost the spark within them for each other. My favorite part is that Wes can see the real Mina through her facade and brings her back. This is a great read for a young adult.

A Forever Kind of Thing is a YA novel by Carrie Thomas and Melinda Harris. Mina and Wes are two kids at a prestigious high school from two very different backgrounds. It’s been a long time since I’ve been in high school but reading this story brought it all back. The authors do a great job of taking you along for the ride of the ups and downs that these two experience. Despite going through a lot, these two have each other and it is a beautiful, well-written relationship that we have the pleasure of witnessing. I loved Mina and Wes together. I was especially surprised at how much I enjoyed the character of Wes. This is a very good read for YA fans.

I really related to this book. My stepmother had my brother when I was 17. And everyone always assumed he was my baby when he wasn’t. Claire really steps up in this book when her mom can’t handle it. She ends up being her brothers primary caregiver.

Wonderful tale of strength and resilience! Claire has the power and strength of giants.

Claire’s life was turned upside down when her mother announced she was pregnant after a one-night stand. As Claire’s mother’s depression increased during the pregnancy and deepened after Harry was born, Claire took an ever increasing parental role for Harry and her mother.

As Claire’s senior year of high school begins, things are only getting worse. Add a new guy that eyes for Claire despite her efforts to turn those eyes to her best friend. Claire’s uncle is threatening to take Harry. Claire has to make some hard decisions about what she wants for her life and the future.

Unorthodox solutions to Claire’s problems present themselves. Claire decides that these choices are the only way to save her family which means that Harry isn’t going anywhere. As Claire is two steps from following through on her unorthodox solutions, another way presents itself. Although this new way is hard for Claire to swallow, she determines it is the better option.

Claire found the inner strength to protect the family she wanted, even if it meant that she went to extreme measures to get it. I don’t want to reveal too much but the way Claire was able to repair the relationship with her mom was beautiful. Sure, it will still require work to get back to the way it was but any steps forward are good.

Worth the read. Take the time to get to know Claire and Harry.

I am a sucker for YA Romance books. This was a good read! I enjoyed that it really is such a “possible” story. Kids in high school are mean, but eventually everyone grows up, goes their separate ways, but we do have people that never leave our minds and hearts. So many emotions felt throughout! Foster homes, high school, bullies, and the wrong side of the tracks.

Mina and Wes, the two protagonists, have different backgrounds but grow and mature together at a prestigious high school. Like most teenagers, you either want to slap them or love on them throughout the story.

One thing I liked about the book was the problems Mina and Wes encounter, for the most part, typical of teenagers. with the exception of Wes being in foster care. I liked this because it is more relatable to both adult readers and teens alike.

One thing I didn’t like about the novel was the middle kind of dragged on- the book had a strong beginning, weak middle, and decent end. I would definitely try to read more books by either author.

A Forever Kind of Thing by Carrie Thomas & Melinda Harris is a YA, NA romance tale. This is the first book that I have read by either of these authors and I wasn’t sure it was something that I wanted to read. It took me a bit to get into the story. High school stories do that, but I wanted to give this story a go.
Being from the wrong side of the tracks she was the target of bullies, intimidation, cruelty that many find themselves in at school. Now she is the one others envy but behind it all is a broken girl with hidden secrets. That is until he walks back into the picture.
There is sadness, betrayal, pain, hurt, angst, tension, heartbreak, heartache, hope, shame and a whole other rollercoaster of emotions that our MC goes through in this story.
It was hard not to feel for our MC and the tumultuous life that she endured. Kids can and are cruel at times. There were times that I just wanted to hug her and later on there were times when I wanted to smack some sense into her.
If you love a rocky road to love YA/NA story, then you will like A Forever Kind of Thing.

Nyman had me hooked from the very first chapter! I flew through this book trying to figure out what was going to happen with this adorable little guy, Harry. Taking on the challenge of not only trying to raise a child, but also become her own mother’s guardian while also trying to make it through the final year of school to make sure that her brother is safe and loved is the most pure form of love. I was shocked when I finally got to learn a little more about Harry’s father: it was such a surprising twist!

This story took me by surprise a bit. This story will truly have you on a wide spectrum of emotions while the main character Claire deals with some heavy stuff. But Claire is an amazing main character and I instantly felt the connection she brought to the storyline. This is my first time reading this author and I definitely wasn’t disappointed. This author knows how to get you so draw into a story that the real world disappears. I felt every emotion written into this story so easily. It’s well written with great characters. Five stars all the way and highly recommended.

As annoying as it can be to be mistaken for his Mom and to have to give up the summer before her senior year, Claire loves Harry and will protect their bond at all costs. Her mom is just not acting like she should and hasn’t ever since she had Harry. But it could be mostly because her brother Pat, is evil.
Hoping that the new guy in school, Chad and her best friend, Mads, don’t make her pick between them Claire is really trying to find her way and help her family. She has enough going on and really needs good supportive friends.

This book is definitely a “hold your attention, page turner” as you become invested in Claire’s story. You can’t help but become one of her cheerleaders through all the things being thrown her direction.

This touched on so many emotions and you could feel them coming through the pages. I can’t wait to check out what else this author has to offer us. This book took me by surprise in the best way. This is the first time I have read a book by this author and I am not disappointed.

Claire is going into her Senior year of high school, but is struggling because her home life is not ideal. Her mom gave birth a few months ago and has been struggling since before giving birth. It got worse after birth. Claire stepped up and has been the adult in the house.

Her plans for college though are falling out of reach when she finds out her mom has spent her college fund on her baby brother’s daycare. Little does Claire know the twists that are about to unfold when her mom is suddenly put in the hospital for some treatment.

Claire meets a fellow Senior, Chad, just as school is starting back and he becomes her lifeline. ALong with her longtime friend Madison. He gives Claire a proposition that will help her and her mom out but will she take it?

I read this book in a day. I just could not put it down. I could see this as a movie. I’m sure we all know someone that basically has lived a similar story to this.

I love Claire. Her strength and loyalty throughout everything is nothing if not awe inspiring this story was so well told. I felt what Claire was feeling and going through. The author captured the raw emotions enough to help the reader truly feel what Claire was feeling. I cannot recommend this book enough! I absolutely can’t wait to read more from this author.

I really enjoyed this YA book. Claire goes from excelling in high school with big plans for her future to stepping up and being the primary caregiver for her baby brother while her mom continues to seek deeper into depression. She is strong and values her family, and she keeps them together no matter who and what she has to step up to. The pacing and character development were excellent throughout the book; my only complaint was that I felt like it just ended with out any closure. I do look forward to reading more by this talented author.

Reading this book and getting to know Pyper reminded me of my own thought process when I was in high school. The irony of it made me laugh so much. Pyper has a go-getter attitude when it comes to taking action but her activism efforts towards canceling prom has been declined. She also has a great relationship with her mother in which she shares everything going on in her life with her. It’s really nice to see a positive and healthy mother and teenage daughter relationship. Her mother appears to be Pyper’s voice of reason when it comes to her thought process and decisions with her current life standings. As the story proceeds, Pyper discovers that we may not know the right and wrong of everything going on in our lives and starts coming to terms with that aspect. Great concept for many teens to learn that it’s okay not knowing everything.

Absolutely fantastic story of family, love and the steps that people take to keep their family together. A can’t put down read that has you want to reach out to Claire and just give her a hug. This girl has taken on the world and nothing will ever be the same for her. Claire a soon to be senior in HS has taken on the greatest responsibility anyone can have baby Harry. In this can’t put down story of love and family Claire will go to the ends of the earth to keep baby Harry safe but at what cost.

I felt like I went back to high school. However this time I didn’t hate it. Sage Advice is a cute story about you guessed it high schoolers. I love the advice column aspect of the story. Though I was able to figure some out, it still gave a different life to the book. Frankly just as oblivious as the main character exhibits throughout I didn’t realize that tidbit from the title. But it is glaringly obvious now.
Pyper is a high school senior, who had her heart shattered, and that incident revolved around prom. So what does she do? She swears off men, but at the same time lets everyone believe she’s in a relationship. She also tries to get prom canceled. Like I said, try. She learns some valuable lessons throughout this book. Some minor others may be a little more important. It’s the growth that she exhibits as she learns these lessons that really makes her character blossom.
Will she ever confront and/or let her ex-boyfriend go?
Will she open her eyes to not miss opportunities to be happy, that are right in front of her?
Those questions and so many more to get the answers too. There’s so many characters that Impact Pyper in different ways, which actually reminded me of the people I surrounded myself with at that age. They were friends for sure, but they all served a different purpose in your life if they knew it or not.
If you want something different, check out this young adult novel. Transport yourself back to a time when things didn’t matter as much as they do now. Teens, this book is definitely for you!

This is a wonderful story. A high school senior sacrifices her summer and her senior year. Her single mother is suffering a severe depression following an unplanned pregnancy. The heroine experiences judgment from all sides, as people assume she is a young teen mother. There is an evil, conniving, relative who wants to buy the baby brother. There are college applications to complete, and high school heartbreak to avoid. The heroine must make serious and complex decisions for herself, her baby brother, and even her parents as the story unfolds.

Pyper Lewis is a young lady on a mission, a mission to cancel (in her opinion) the worst event on the social and educational calendar, an event which is a tradition for every school leaver to attend and one which has a hold on her memories which she cannot shake. PROM!!! Pyper thought she was not alone in hating this celebration of coming of age, however, when she requests that the school council cancels it, everyone votes against it, including the boys, but it gets even worse when she finds out that she has to now organise it instead!

At least she has her best friends she can turn to for help cheering herself up and it just so happens that one of them is having a dilemma all of her own and this is something that Pyper cannot resist, giving advice and helping those around her. This is when her determination to succeed eclipses everything else and despite that four-letter event looming in the future, she decides to make the rest of the senior year up to it the best one ever for herself and her friends and nothing can stop her once she has made her mind up.

As the year passes and the dreaded prom moves closer, Pyper’s best laid plans to avoid prom at all costs start to unravel bit by bit, but can she overcome her fear and the memories this event invokes in her, or will she miss out on what could be a great time with her friends? This is a fun coming of age story which deals with strong emotions in a fun and playful way, while also not minimising the impact that these emotions have on the person, it is witty and a must read for anyone who is a fan of imperfect teens and the mayhem they cause.

Complicated Choices by Risa Nyman is an intense and powerfully told story. While the typical high school senior is worrying about high school troubles, Claire Jackson has to worry about taking care of her baby brother. It was heartbreaking to watch this young girl give up her life to care for a baby that wasn’t even hers. Claire is such a well-written character. She is loyal and the strength she shows as a teen is inspiring. The story is rich and complicated. The choices that Claire is presented with are complex and there are plenty of twists and turns. If you want a book that will draw you in, I highly recommend this one.

Imagine having the weight of the world on your shoulders your senior year of high school. Responsibilities include keeping grades up, picking the right college, cleaning house, taking care of your baby brother, and taking care of your mother. That’s Claire’s situtation and she wasn’t given a lot of choices as she entered into what should have been the best year of her life.

Claire’s parents divorced a few years back and her mom went on a business trip earlier in the year. A few weeks after she returned home, she found out she was pregnant. She refused to tell Claire who the dad was and even left that spot empty on Harry’s birth certificate. Everything changed when she got pregnant and Claire had to start picking up the pieces.

Claire’s friends come to her aid but they have limited resources, especially when Uncle Pat starts to stick his nose into everything. Claire will stop at nothing to keep her little brother and mom together with her. Her senior year is nothing like she expected but she is also learning valuable lessons along the way.

This book was a challenging read for me. Maybe it’s because I had to grow up fast and have “adult” responsibilites at a young age. Claire’s story really resonated with me though. I found myself becoming angry at all the people around her who were letting her deal with all of this alone when some of them could have stepped up and helped her. Claire became so much stronger through this experience and learned to love, forgive, and plan a future that she wanted, not what others expected of her.

This was a wonderful read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve read a few books by this author now and she’s got such a great writing style – her stories really engage me the whole way through.

This is a young adult romance story and it definitely transported me back to that time in my life – I think I’m certain I wouldn’t like to go through it again. I found the characters really engaging and a lot of young readers would definitely be able to relate to some of the things the main character, Pyper, is going through. There were some great secondary characters in the story too.

This is definitely a great YA romance read and I would recommend it to readers of all ages.

This is my first novel by this author and I have to say, I’m impressed. This would be an adorable hallmark movie. It’s a very good palate cleanser.
