I thought this was a really fun YA paranormal series beginning novel! I am definitely excited to read the rest of the stories and see how the series turns out. I thought the characters were a lot of fun and Makayla was a great heroine with a bit of an edge to her. She isn’t above breaking some rules and having fun, but she isn’t a mean girl and tries to be inclusive. The story sets up a couple of different mysteries that I am excited to hopefully see play out in the rest of the series. The book is a lighthearted read and covers an entire school year, so at times some of the timeline did feel a bit quick, but still easily followed. There was quite a bit of humor in a book about witches and Grave Diggers which made it all the more enjoyable to read. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

Ashes by MK Harkins is a modern-day retelling of the Cinderella fairy tale. Ashley is an outsider that gets bullied by her peers at school and is disliked by her stepmother. Harry is the “bad-boy” pop star attending her high school while he cleans up his act. They find that they have an instant connection when she hides hum from fans but it remains to be seen if they’ll be able to stay together. This is a pretty good read. I like the relationship between Ashley and Harry. The book has nice twists to keep it interesting. There is a good amount of character development, especially for Harry. This is a very good retelling of Cinderella. If you enjoy modern-day fairy tales, you will enjoy this book.

This was a good book with a great story! It was very fast paced, which I loved, except it seemed like with the fast pacing some things were rushed that could have been explained more thoroughly and taken some extra time to devote to. It’s like the timing was skipping around all over the place. I loved the story and premise, the storyline and plot, it just didn’t feel all that well executed to me. I was entertained though, and I would read thr next installment of this series.

This was an absolute fun and enjoyable read. It was lighthearted and I love the small humor in the book. I LOVED the extra mystery revolving around Makayla’s family and the old myth about being the seventh born. Makayla is a super spunky good but also a rebel teenager. The last thing she wanted was to be a grave digger, but was it the best thing that happened to her? The only thing I did not like was that at some points time was accelerated without any description of how much time actually had passed. This book is like Harry Potter with conjunction of the paranormal. The way C.A. King introduced all of the characters was marvelous, I really enjoyed how she introduced the villain in the story in combo with Makayla’s background. An amazing paranormal witch academy story that you will fall in love with and hate to be done with!

This book sucked me in from the very first chapter. It is a brilliant modern day Cinderella Story. Ashley and Harry make such a great couple. This book had me laughing out loud one minute and wanting to throw my phone at the wall the next. This is the first book I have listened by this author. I’m looking forward to listening to the rest of the books in this series.

This is also the first time I have listened to a book narrated by Michelle Shure. I really enjoyed her voice. It made the story flow and brought the characters to life.

This is a series that I have read out of order but found thoroughly enjoyable anyway. Adding the first book of the series on to what I have read was always something I was going to do, and I am really glad I did. I had a great feel for the characters anyway but it was nice to finally get that full, overall development. There were definitely a few details in this book that I had missed out on.
As with the others this book is well written with a great, steady pace to it. I became invested in both the characters and the story and enjoyed that tale the author had created. This is a great series overall that is definitely worth a read.

I enjoyed reading this young adult story. This is not my first book by this author but it is one of my favorites yet. One of the things I enjoy most about this author is her ability to pull me into her stories from the start. Her characters are connectable and bring the story to life on each page. This story is no different. This is a well written story that will make you question fairytale magic. Does it have a place in life or is it just that a fairytale? This is a fast paced story that I had a hard time putting down. It is an engaging story where the character’s growth is great. They have great chemistry and are supportive of each other throughout. This is a great story that I truly enjoyed and look forward to seeing what is next for this author. I highly recommend this book.

This was an excellent reading experience! And yes, it truly was an experience, learning about djinn and Ifrit along with Bax. Seeing his prejudice as he walked his path, and his growth as he realized his mistakes. This story kept me engrossed from beginning to end. I truly adore fantasy stories, and I’m a sucker for a young adult read. This was such an excellently written glimpse into getting wishes granted and the perils of not being careful what you wish for. It brought to mind a lyric by Daughtry, “Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.” If you like modern takes on fantastical and mythological themes, this is definitely a fabulous choice!

This is an enjoyable and engaging YA cozy mystery, and a great first book in a new series. In this story we are introduced to the heroine of the series, Emma, who is working at her family’s bakery but dreaming of adventure. Set in Chicago 1881, and the city is recovering from the Great Fire of 71, and the author does a wonderful job of bringing both the setting and the era vividly to life, through her descriptive narrative. Emma takes the opportunity of working with the boys on the delivery wagons, in her quest for a more exciting life.
Emma has always been very observant and dreams of being a detective. Her observations lead her to investigate cases ranging from robbery to murder. However, her first case becomes more complicated when her family seem to be involved, and family secrets are revealed. Emma has to use all her skills, including her self defence and knife skills, in order to protect both herself and her family. This is a very entertaining, page turner of a novel, which I thoroughly recommend. Emma is a great main character, who is likeable and relatable, and I look forward to going on many more cases with her during this series.

Notebook Mysteries ~ Emma (Notebook Mysteries Book 1) by Kimberly Mullins. I have loved this series so much. The writing is so good that I feel like I’m truly there. This is Emma’s story and she is a remarkable lady. This is set in 1881 in Chicago after the great fires and Emma is in tune with things that she helps solve several crimes that have happened. Emma and her father are extremely forward thinking for their time. He even hires “specialists” to help Emma learn and that was unheard of in the time. Losing her mom in the fires has changed them all but it has only made Emma stronger and more independent. They are also trying to continue to run her mom’s bakery keeping them all super busy but the desires of Emma’s heart is far greater than her mom’s bakery. Trying to keep safe and still solve the crimes that she loves to do she dresses in a disguise to fool people. Will she be able to continue solving crimes or will she become a victim herself. Read this fun book about history and you will feel like you were actually there.

I have mentioned in reviews before that I shy away from main characters in their teens because I find them immature and whiny… I suppose that’s a sign of a well written character as immaturity is part of our teen years but there is often something off putting about it. ANYWAY, MK Harkins is an author I’ve read and loved in the past so I decided to take a chance. Ashes was a fun, easy to read, modern day spin on Cinderella. I thought the characters were actually really well written with supporting characters being just as charming as the main. I feel like this author did a great job proving to me that all YA fiction is not the same and retelling a classic tell can be unique and enjoyable. I really enjoyed feeling as though I knew about and cared for the characters and I felt like I was there right in the halls or high school with the vivid imagery.
I would definitely recommend giving this book a chance for a fun escape from your day to day and I look forward to reading more.

So I’m a huge fan of twists or retellings of different stories and on of my favorites is different takes on Cinderella so I was definitely excited for this one. And boy was I so right to hop right in. Ashley and Harry were characters that had me completely captured and forgetting I was in a story world. This author just knows how to keep readers so sucked in. I definitely can’t wait to see where the author takes readers next. It’s well written and paced nicely never feeling rushed or lacking anything. It’s a fun read that will keep you entertained for hours. Five big stars and highly recommended!

So, let me first say that I am very familiar with this author as I have read several of her books. This was a first for me to read of an illustrated book by her. It was fantastic! I thought she was able to keep my attention with her wonderfully written story and amazing characters. I personally could visualize everything I was reading without having the illustrations. However, the illustrations were so good that it was an added plus to see them amazing art. I am not a fan of mythology books typically. However, I do love reading about the Spanish culture. The way that she included both into this story made me interested in the mythology that was being explained. It may have me delving into more mythology in the future.

This isn’t a book I would normally pick up, but I am extremely glad I did. I expected this to be geared more towards children but was pleasantly surprised to have enjoyed it so much!

When Azreya is born, her family believes she is cursed by the demon Tepeyollotl. They enlist the help of a shaman, Nukpana, who allows her to live with him as he teaches her how to control the beast within. Everything is not always as it seems and Azreya uses her gifts to reveal the truth. She finds that she needs to leave to help save her people, living life on her own accord and trying to convince others to trust her. Will she be able to tame the emotional beast inside of her or will she turn into the demon everyone claims her to be?

The characters and world-building throughout are just amazing. I was blown away by how much I enjoyed this book. The illustrations are wonderful and add even more depth to the story. I really loved this glimpse into Aztec culture and mythology.

I really enjoyed this story. The author does an amazing job of bringing Aztec mythology to life and the attention to detail really brought the whole story to life. The author’s descriptions about the Aztecs way of life and beliefs was very interesting to read. The beautiful drawings that were also included in this story just added to the creative feel and experience.

Azreya is a young girl who is considered cursed by one of the God’s. To help her she is sent at the age of 3 to stay with a sharman who is going to teach her how to calm the beast inside her.
Things go well until a visitor arrives that causes Azreya to flee her safe haven.
However when she returns to her family they don’t want to take her in for fear of what this “cursed” person could do.
While Azreya is having visions of the future she sees that her people are in great danger from an enemy. Can she make her people listen to her and protect themselves or will they ignore her warnings and have to face the consequences.

This is a story of pain and betrayal when you realise the person you thought you could trust turns out to be someone you can’t trust at all. It’s also a story of courage as Azreya fights to stand by her visions and what she has seen to protect her people and save them from disaster.

What a wonderfully original retelling of Cinderella. I found the story to be relevant to today’s world. Ashley is a strong and brave young woman. She has a battle ahead and she takes no guff. I found the interactions with the characters, such as the M & M’s, Veronica, Laura, and Harry James were so relatable. The plot twist of solving the poisoning and attempted murders was a great twist. The narration was good. I did feel it could have used a bit more variation of voices. A fun audio read for any age.

Azreya is a young girl born with a mark on her hand and a demon inside her. Her parents are convinced that she needs to be turned over to their priest, Nukpana, by age of three to protect them from her. They turn her over and expect to see her again, however, that is not what happens. Once they turn her over, Nukpana takes over her training and her life. As she grows, she begins to realize that he is just using her to increase his standing in the community. When Nukpana decides to only share part of Azreya’s vision concerning the Spanish and the Aztecs, she realizes that she must take matters into her own hands and runs away. But at the young age of 13, how will she convince others to take her seriously? Who can she trust? Will she be able to bring the Aztecs together in order to stand against the Spanish in time?

First of all, I really like this author! The characters are well written, and the story was like a movie playing in my head. I enjoyed learning about the Aztec culture and gods while reading about a girl that just wants to be loved. She’s thrown into a life she didn’t choose and is doing her best to keep the balance between an angry beast inside of her and the real-world struggles that surround her. She does find that balance and it was fascinating to read how she does.

Its the story of Azreya a Aztec Princess who has been put into the custody of a shaman, Nukpana who is supposed to help her learn how to use her powers and to tame the beast inside of her. The only problem is Nukpana is not her friend and can not be trusted. It is thought that Azreya is cursed and that is the reason she has the beast inside her. If that demon inside her somehow takes over she will die. So learning how to contain it is crucial. Azreya’s one goal is to help her people so learning to control herself is imperative. I love this author and her writing is so descriptive that you feel as if you are there. Such a good young adult paranormal read!

This is an historical mystery series featuring plucky teenager Emma whom we follow as she investigates various crimes and mysteries, here, and throughout the series. She has a knack for solving crime and this is the book that starts it all.
With adventure, drama, danger, secrets, corruption, and more- made for an intriguing read.

This was a cute read! This is a (sometimes morbid) re-telling of the classic story Cinderella. It’s set in a modern time, with a teenage pop star instead of a prince. This is definitely a YA book, you can tell mot only in the content but also in writing style. I enjoyed reading this book as it was different than other reimagined stories I’ve read in the past. This is the first time I’ve read this author before and I’m excited to read more stories from her in the future.

I love mythology books and this one does not disappoint. Azreya is a curious, yet intelligent child that is Cursed by the Tepeyollotli at birth. Her parents, with the guidance of a shaman named Nukpana decided to leave her with the Shaka so he can help her beat the demon within her.
Although Nukpana teaches Azreya everything she knows, he is no friend to her and she ends up on her own with the knowledge that the Spanish are going to invade her land and if she doesn’t get all of the Aztecs to fight as one her people and her culture will be destroyed.

Ashley is in her senior year at Redmond High School. Her father passed away a year prior leaving her to live with her step mother and two step sisters. Her father left her a trust fund to go away to college but with one stipulation, she must graduate on time. Ashley’s step mother, Veronica, will stop at nothing to get that money for herself. She puts Ashley to work in the family funeral home and only gives her the bare minimum time to complete anything else outside of work.

Harry James, a famous pop star, has gotten into a lot of trouble. His sentence included finishing high school with no more trouble and out of the spotlight. Redmond High School has a really good basketball team so that is the school he decides to serve his sentence out.

Cue the meet cute in the funeral home no less. Instantly there are sparks but the universe seems against them being together.

Everyone loves an old fashioned fairy tale, especially the classics. This book is a modern take on Cinderella and I loved it. Cinderella was one of my favorites when I was a child but this book made it more relatable.

Ashley and Harry are so different from each other yet so similar at the same time. Ashley is hardened by the loss of her father, she no longer believes in love and has so many walls up that she seems indifferent to everything. She is sassy, honest and will say what’s on her mind even if it will get her into trouble.

Harry is a charismatic guy who has trouble disappointing people. He will go out of his way to make everyone else happy, even at the expense of his own happiness. Being thrust into the spotlight at a young age made him lose himself and he has become a shell of what he once wanted to be.

Wow, what a great and fascinating story!! It was a nice change of pace for me and a wonderful surprise of a story as I sat and was totally engrossed in this world of mythology and fantasy and followed along with Azreya and her journey.

Azreya’s journey starts when she is little…..originally thought to be “cursed”. Her family invests into a shaman to help, Nukpana. As Nukpana helps Azreya understand her gifts, she also has to learn to tame her inner beast. Not all what it seems to Azreya, as she wants to protect her Aztec people and also is deceived by those around her.

Wonderful story and captured me right from the beginning. I also loved the beginning glossary of the Aztec words (so I know what they mean) and the illustrations as it gave me a sense of the characters in the story. Well Done and Highly Recommended!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 5 Stars!

When I read the blurb about this story, I was kinda interested and thought I would take a chance on something a little different for me. Well, call me hooked. The story is fabulous. I love the way the threads of the classic are woven into the modern. It is not a simple retelling, it is more of reinvention of the fairytale genre.

Ashley Jones is still lost in the grief of her father’s recent death when her step-mother moves her to Washington State for an investment opportunity. Ash starts working for the family funeral home. This makes high school super fun (note the sarcasm). Ash is isolated until Laura moves to town.

Harry James is a pop star. Harry and his best friend accidentally burned down their high school chem lab. As part of Harry’s probation, he must attend and graduate from a normal high school. Guess whose school he attends. From the moment Harry first meets Ash, he knows she is different. She doesn’t care about his superstar status. He can be himself, the real him, with her. As their friendship develops, obstacles and people try to prevent them from being together. It looks like disaster for Ash and Harry.

Like the magic in this modern reinvention, any reader will be put under the spell of this author and her fantastically woven tapestry. Awesome series!!

This is a modern-day telling of Cinderella. There have been dozens and dozens of Cinderella themed books over the years. I can’t say I’ve ever come across one where the girl that is comparable to Cinderella works in a funeral home doing makeup. The singer/dancer for Prince Charming has been done.

Ashley is an outcast at her high-school….mainly for one reason. That reason? She works in a funeral home giving makeovers to the newly departed. Harry is the Prince of Pop with the bad boy image to go with it. He’s sent back to high-school as part of his probation. His crime? Setting a school chemistry lab on fire. At least he has his best friend, George Sparks, there to keep him out of trouble…. or can he?

Ashley is a relatable character. She isn’t flat and monotonous. She has character, attitude which comes out more than once and a great personality.

Ashes is a great modern day retelling of Cinderella. Ashley doesn’t believe in love. She pushes people away before Ashley can be rejected. This story still has the evil stepmother and stepsisters from the original Cinderella. This time, they are more diabolical by using baked goods to kill people. Thankfully, Ashley meets Harry, her prince charming. I love that their relationship survives all of the obstacles that are thrown their way. Also enjoyed the fact that Ashley’s friend Laura was actually a fairy that helped her find love. Ashes is great for anyone who loves fairytales and romance books.

From Brick & Darkness is the exciting debut novel from J.L. Sullivan. It is a wonderfully woven YA urban fantasy with mystery, magic, action, adventure, suspense, puzzles, manipulation, agendas, angst, drama, folklore, friendship, and more.
A yearning for a better life, an unusual ring, a sinister djinn, and plenty of danger- Dax is about to discover that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
An engrossing and fun read. Looking forward to seeing what Mr. Sullivan does next.

Ashes (Modern-Day Fairy Tale Series Book 1)

This a modern day Cinderella with a much darker vibe and I enjoyed every moment of it.

Ashley lives with her step mother and step sisters who do everything possible to make Ashley as miserable as humanely possible plus a little more for good measure. But the suffering doesn’t end there, she has to deal with it at school as well.

Harry isn’t perfect, he doesn’t stand up for himself or his happiness.  He meets Ashley and all of that changed for him.

You would think the story would go as expected but I think that would have made a pretty predictable story and this was anything but.

I can’t wait for the next book to be released,  I need to know what happens next for Ashley and Harry but also need to read how George finds his happiness.
