This story is the prequel to The Woman America Loves a Latte but can really be read after wards as well. This story is more about Veloura’s parents which in turn gives us more insight into how she becomes the way she is. I would have preferred to read this one first.

The character of Veloura is a very young child throughout most of this story. She faces terrible neglect from her parents due to their lack of communication with each other and their own selfishness. Their actions make understanding Vee so much easier. I can see why at age 20 in the next book she still seemed a little dippy.

Vee’s parents, Marla and Paul are an interesting set of people. Marla’s “problems” could easily be labeled as drug addiction, but that is only the beginning of her problems. While the dad, Paul seems to want a perfect family with no effort from himself.

Tierney-Bedord creates these characters that we can relate to, even hate a little, but ones we can understand. We may even know people like this in real life.

Reading Tierney-Bedord’s books always makes me want to read the next one so there’s no doubt that I will be looking forward to the next one!
