Lucky at Love (Some guys just never give up) by Cynthia Hamilton – Review by Jennifer Gordon

Lucky at Love: Some Guys Just Never Give Up...Lucky at Love: Some Guys Just Never Give Up… by Cynthia Hamilton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a wonderfully written novel with great main characters in the form of mule breeder Jake Sorenson and journalist Allison Tyler-Wilcox. Allison and Jake first meet at Jake’s sisters wedding and when Allison learns that he has been married and divorced seven times she can not believe it when he says that he considers himself to be ‘lucky at love’. Allison can not understand Jake’s attitude, that although he has been divorced many times his marriages were not failures. Trying to understand Jake and his views better Allison convinces her editor into letting her visit Jake at his ranch to do an article on, “the compulsion some people have when it comes to saying “I do””. Whilst spending time with Jake she realises she has misjudged him, and due to sharing mule rides and impromptu tango dances Allison realises that Jake’s unique philosophy on life and love might actually be worth listening to. The trip leaves Allison feeling confused about her own marriage and her own ideals, let alone confused about her feelings for Jake.
I found myself fully immersed in this book due to the likeable and realistic characters, I enjoyed discovering how Allison and Jakes relationship changed and developed throughout the story. The storyline flowed along nicely and the narrative kept me happily turning the pages. Thanks to the wonderful descriptions by the author of both person and place I felt as though I was there with Jake and Allison. This novel is very character driven and Hamilton really made me care for the main characters and therefore I felt invested in the conclusion of both their story and the novel.
