License to Bite: A Paranormal Romantic Comedy (New Orleans Nocturnes Book 1) by Carrie Pulkinen – Review by Gail Guerrero
Five Stars
Five stars because I laughed so hard while reading this story. The author really knew what she was doing when she put this together. The main female lead is so ornery and feisty it’s no wonder they want to stake her. I find the fact that they have to get a license to bite hilarious. I just couldn’t get enough. The male lead did upset me a little. Like you turn me because you think I’m you lost love. Nah that’ not how this works. Love me for me not just cause I remind you of someone. The author did a great job giving us something classic with a spin. I am looking forward to see what all the author has to offer. You don’t find many authors who make you go though ups and downs.

YA (young adult) genre is an up and coming genre Martin Ferguson has become one of my favorite authors of this genre. He takes history and brings it to the future. His storyline gives hope that the readers may enjoy reading about one historical artifact will make them seek out more about that artifact. In this book, the past has caught up to the present, but what will Adam and his friends do to stay alive? Will they have to fight the past to get out of the present situation? I highly recommend this book for a great read.

Safe Harbor is the fifth book in the Logan McKenna Mystery book series. Being this is book five in the series, I highly recommend reading books one through four so you will enjoy the character’s growth in the series. The characters are fully developed and have a personality that made me feel as if I was apart of their world. The storyline is intriguing. In this book, we find that Logan is on vacation enjoying everything, but it all comes to a head when she finds herself in the murder investigation. What will Logan have to do to get through this chapter in her life? Will things come out that she has kept hidden? I highly recommend this book to see how Logan handles this mystery,

Karma’s Karnival by Aubrey Wynne is one of the books in the Soul’s Day Boxset. Let me tell you that all the books in this Halloween Anthology are amazing but the best one for me is Karma’s Karnival. I had to read this book in the middle of the day because I was a little scared of what was going to be coming around every corner. When you go to Karnival’s custom sideshow, you will always get a prize. It may not be the one you are thinking of but there is a winner. This sideshow is dark and you can see in your mind’s eye everything because of Aubrey Wynne’s descriptive writing. I highly recommend this story. The other books in this anthology are good too. The authors have come together with eye-opening horror and paranormal storylines in everyone. If you are looking for a spooky read I recommend all of these books.

This book was just what I needed, I love reading Christmas romances and Nicole Flockton did not disappoint. Don’t worry, even if you do not like sports romances, you will still enjoy this book. The writing style alongside the characters will keep you wanting more. From the banter between Maggie and Trey to the Christmas theme, you will not regret reading this book!

Bonds That Beckon by Kelli Kimble is the first book in the Daughters of Anubis series. This is a young adult paranormal story with a strong premise. I enjoyed the overall story on this book and could clearly see what the author was trying to achieve. I did at times struggle with the characters a little, I didn’t always fully connect with them. However their journey combined with the story made for a great read the whole way through. This is the first book that I have read by this author and while I felt there were a coupon of bits that could have just done with a bit more work I definitely enjoyed reading it. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

This fifth book in the Logan McKenna Mystery series from Valerie Davisson, is one you don’t want to miss. I mention it is the fifth because I think it would be easier to enjoy this series if you read it from the beginning and in order a little bit. I was so excited to see that we were getting another novel from Logan that I scooped this one up without even reading the synopsis. As I expected Logan finds herself in the middle of chaos and danger as she is thrust into the middle of two murders. This is another fast paced and well described novel that makes you feel as if you are there in the thick of the mystery and suspense as you read about Logan and her adventures to find Safe Harbor. I can’t wait to see what we will get next from Davisson!

This is the third in the Relic Hunters series from Martin Ferguson, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat just as much as the ones prior. I really enjoy these novels even though they are geared towards young adults, but honestly it’s just a bonus because the content is something I can share with my teenage daughter and I don’t have to worry about it. I love the way Ferguson can pull you in with his historical fiction. It is a perfect combination of fact and fiction that you are never bored and it is a breeze to read. This time the Relic Hunters find themselves on a mission after a German U boat is discovered in Scotland, weird right? They soon find out they are not the only ones on the case and danger factors rise. I was completely sucked in to this book and I just couldn’t put it down. I ended up reading it well into the night because I had to know what was going to happen to the team. I was not disappointed one bit in the sleep I missed out on. I look forward to seeing what the team will encounter next!

I wasn’t exactly sure what I had gotten myself into when I picked up The Mummy of Monte Cristo by J Trevor Robinson. I have never read his work prior to this and the premise was definitely strong and pulled me right in. I personally adore ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’, so I was highly intrigued to see what he would do with this classic fav of mine. I must say I had high expectations going into it that it would be something I would ultimately enjoy. This book plays out fairly slow. I will start with that because it stuck in the back of my mind as I read most of the book. I was constantly waiting for that extra bit of magic I wanted for lack of better description. It just felt like it took forever to get to the good stuff lol. This however didn’t ruin my overall enjoyment of the book and its premise. I won’t divulge much more than you get in the synopsis because that would ruin the twist he has given Monte Cristo. I can tell you there is something for everyone in this between the nod to classical literature, mummies, magic, monsters and zombies, and even some adventurous points. I think all the aspects are what kept me enthralled as I felt it drug on. I am eager to see what else we have or will get from Robinson!

I loved this collection of paranormal and horror stories. There is a collection of 19 stories by a variety of authors which means you can read stories by authors you don’t know and may find a new favourite.
One of my new favourites is Aubrey Wynne. Her story was really captivating. Its about a couple who die in an accident. The wife is set to go to heaven, however her husband is set to go to hell for his deeds in life. With the help of his wife he is in purgatory and needs to redeem himself. Can he make up for his deeds in life? With the help of his wife can he redeem himself or is it too little too late.
So this one is my favorite of all the Logan McKenna books. The story is great and full of action and suspense. The chapter are short so it’s easy to say….just one more chapter then I’ll shut out the light. But guess what? Doesn’t happen. The characters have really developed over time and have finally reached their potential. I liked how Logan got swept into this investigation and didn’t place herself there.
I found I was sucked into this story. It has a full cast of characters that lead me on a wonderful chase. Who did it? Who is involved with whom? There are exes, Chinese thugs, FBI, musicians, sea boat captains and more! I don’t want to forget Logan, Ben and her daughters family all on a vacation to Oregon when the unspeakable happens.
Overall as I mentioned this is my favorite of the series. The writing flowed better and the story left out the unimportant/fluff and inserted action, drama and suspense that kept me interested and turning pages.

Safe Harbor A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 5 By Valerie Davisson ☆☆☆☆☆ This is a fully intense mystery. You will get to follow Logan as she works on solving a crime. Sit down and get ready!
Logan McKenna is so ready for vacation with her family. The first in a longtime and headed to the Oregon coast. Logan and Ben take their children on many mini trips, the ocean, the aquarium, a fishing trip on a chartered boat, and ending with a concert with musicians from China. We all know this will be two unexpected deaths. Logan is found to be in the middle of a crime and spends the rest of her vacation proving her innocence.
Valerie Davisson has written this Crime story. A true rollercoaster ride of solving this murder. All of your feels will be out in the open. I love reading and following Logan, as she investigates her innocence in this murder. Bringing justice to the guilty. Some of the characters will break your heart, others will make you so mad. Brothers are sometimes caught in trouble and their own family is thrown into their mistakes. Please don’t throw your tablet! You will need it to finish this story. I can’t wait for book 6.

Jae Dawson is a new author for me and being my first read I couldn’t wait to dive into it. This book was brilliant from the very beginning, it was entertaining, fun and had a brilliant romance, between two epic characters. These two characters really brought the story to life and made this storyline even more captivating. This authors writing style flowed effortlessly throughout and had great pace and really made you believe you were there alongside the characters. I loved watching these characters grow and watch their connection develop which made it even harder to put this read down, as I was rooting for them throughout. This is a brilliant romance read that shouldn’t be missed, I highly recommend this book, and look forward to reading more from this author.

Five Stars
This is story that will have you ready to buy all of the authors books. The author gives you so much intense emotion with every page. The depth in which the characters play their roles is amazing. Do you keep the secret or give it all up for love? This was a very suspenseful story. I was shaking my head and omg-ing the whole time. India Kells writes a very compelling story. You will find yourself ready to throw the whole phone and yelling at the characters like they can hear you. I read this in one sitting and ready for more. Orla is a great character. Her development through the story was really good. From start to finish I was with her.

A Merry Texan Christmas (Prentice Brothers of Sweet Ridge Book 3) by Nicole Flockton. This story was just what I needed this year. In fact this series has quickly become one of my top favorites. Trey and Maggie May have just made their way to my favorites but don’t tell the others because each have been amazing to read about. But these two just captured a piece of my heart. They immediately pulled me into their world and I had so much fun getting lost with them for a while. They are so easy to connect with and I loved the chemistry they shared. Every character brings something unique to the storyline and I just simply couldn’t put this story down. Another fantastic addition to this series. Five stars all the way and highly recommended!

Bonds That Beckon (Daughters of Anubis Book 1) by Kelli Kimble is a YA paranormal story. It is the story of a young woman who just wants to be accepted in the small mindedness of the people in the town she is in. She is more than she seems and finds someone who can help her. But she also finds her true mate whilst trying to figure it all out. The premise is great, and I liked the characters, but I felt the relationship between the main characters could have been explored more and it felt a little unreal. I also found Iris to be a little naive when it came to trusting others. The story is aimed at YA’s so they may feel a little differently to me when they read it. Give it a go.

No Rest for the Wicked (Life Is Hell Book 1) by Naomi Valkyrie is a paranormal romance story. Naomi’s story telling gets better with each book she writes. Her narrative is on point and her characters are delightful. It’s a fast-paced story that doesn’t lack for anything to make it a good strong story. With danger and Demons, shifters and drama, witches and fallen angels and more what could you ask for. Watching Naomi grow as, an author is a pleasure.

Safe Harbor: A Logan McKenna Mystery Book 5 (The Logan McKenna Series) by Valerie Davisson. This one might be my favorite as of right now. I recommend reading this entire series and I found it better to do so in order. The author has created a story world I love getting lost in. Sometimes with a series that goes for a while it can slow down a bit but I don’t feel that’s the case with these books. Each one pulled me in and kept me guessing and this one was no different in that aspect. The storyline kept me turning the pages as fast as possible to see what would happen next. I just never know what to expect other than an amazing story. It’s well written and paced nicely never feeling rushed or lacking anything. Four stars and highly recommended!

The secondary characters were completely awesome…I loved the dialogue between all of them and I absolutely could not wait for each story, I loved all of the main characters in this series and I loved the story in the background that kept building, I really want more in this series and can’t help wondering if there just maybe some future stories there??? This series has just about everything a paranormal reader could want Witches, Vampires, Werewolves, Dragons and just some awesome storylines, awesome writing, and each book you just don’t want to put down.

“Decrepit humans rescue desperate canines, cats and the occasional rat in this collection of shaggy but piercing short stories.”
Listed by Kirkus Review as one of the best books of 2015, this collection of short stories and a novella explores the complexity of relationships between people and animals in an impoverished rural community where the connections people have with animals are sometimes their only connection to life.
According to Kirkus Review:
“Kearney’s prose is elegant and unfussy, with threads of humor and lyricism. She has an excellent eye for settings and ear for dialogue, and she treats her characters, and their relationships with their pets, with a cleareyed, unsentimental sensitivity and psychological depth. Through their struggles, she shows readers a search for meaning through the humblest acts of caretaking and companionship.
A superb collection of stories about the most elemental of bonds.”
Laura Koerber is an artist who lives with her husband and two dogs on an island in Puget Sound. She is retired from teaching and currently works part time as a care provider. She writes stories drawn from her experiences as an in-home care provider and a dog rescuer in the impoverished rural southwestern corner of Washington state. “I began writing almost as a compulsion,” she said. “I met people and animals and got into situations that just demanded to be described in story form.” Most of her stories concern the lives of people like her clients who live on the margins of society. “I get stories by standing in line at the Food Bank,” she said. Other stories come from dog rescue experiences. “I’m interested in the lives of people who feel like they don’t matter to anyone.”

A Merry Texan Christmas (The Prentice Brothers of Sweet Ridge Book 3) by Nicole Flockton was such a cute read! I love a great Christmas read, it brought Hallmark vibes. Dead Magic: Finn O’ Malley is one of the oldest living vampires. He knows he must stay away from Violet but he can’t. They have a connection so strong that he can feel her as she’s getting tortured. He’ll stop at nothing to find her.

This anthology was a “fun” departure from the usual anthologies I find to read. Very well put together, the collection was cohesive and well publicized for the spookier time of year. If you enjoy paranormal, spooky reading, you will enjoy this volume. All of the authors contributed something I found interesting – and I found some authors that I hadn’t read before. I will admit that Wynne was an immediate pull for me as I’ve read several other works from her library. It was nice to see her step outside the genre I typically find her writing. Overall just a great story from Wynne and collection from the group.
I love Flockton’s books and was so glad to find this holiday edition to feast on. It had just the right mixture of romance, drama, sass – it was just fantastic. I immediately invested in the storyline and dove head first into another Prentice brothers adventure very willingly. A quick delightful read that readied my heart for the holiday season!

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this series and Safe Harbor lived up to my expectations. Davisson continues to do a great job weaving together a compelling story with the right about of suspense, drama, and some fantastic characters to invest in. From start to finish a really great read for all crime lovers.

The Mummy of Monte Cristo by J Trevor Robinson is a classic horror story and is a remake done well. The author has created what feels like one of those timeless classics and is such a great story. The book is well written and you really connect with the main character. It is so easy to understand why he acts the way he does. The story itself is a deep and complex story that is an experience overall for the reader. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I enjoyed the way he put everything together and created such a vivid story. This was a brilliant book and one I thoroughly enjoyed.
