House in the Woods by Jessica Aiken-Hall – Review by Beth McKitrick

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

So this book was a little outside of my wheelhouse. I’m generally a fantasy/sci fi nerd, however I thought the description sounded pretty interesting and I liked the writing style, so I decided to go out on a limb, so to speak. I don’t regret it. This was a quick, enjoyable book that was very easy to read. I did find the “suspense” aspect a bit frustrating, but that says more about me than the book, as there’s a reason I don’t read many suspense/thrillers. I would definitely say this is a bit of a “fluffy” book, in that none of the characters are super deep, nor is the writing as a whole. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just depends on what you’re looking for. Some parts were a bit obvious/predictable from the beginning, but since the main character doesn’t see it, you spend the whole book screaming “you’re looking at wrong person, dummy!!” (Did I mention suspense isn’t really my thing?) However, there were still some twists that surprised me and kept it interesting. Overall, it’s a book that I would recommend, especially if you like this type of story, and you’re looking for something quick and easy-to-read.
